Description

- FIELD OF THE INVENTION TooToo
This invention relates to compositions for the preparation of surfaces, particularly tennis court surfaces.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The conventional all-weather tennis court surface is prepared with a copolymer dispersion which includes asbestos as a filler.
However, legislation has been passed which outlaws the use of asbestos and it has been necessary to search for a substitute for asbestos as a filler in such compositions.
The few companies that manufacture dispersions for tennis courts do not supply the fillers or other material that are required to be blended into the compositions.
It is also clear that manufacturers have little motivation to spend money on research into suitable fillers since the demand is relatively small and are unaware of the proportions which are used and the techniques employed in their application on tennis courts because the tennis court contractors have kept their use of fillers as secrets.
After substantial research, a suitable substitute for asbestos has been found and it is an object of the present invention to provide compositions for the preparation of tennis court and other surfaces which include a perfectly safe and efficient filler.
THE INVENTION
According to the invention a composition for the preparation of a surface includes a dispersion of a suitable synthetic copolymer with a suitable calcium silicate product as a filler.
HE
* In a preferred form of the invention the filler is bentonite, which acts as a thickener to maintain all of the material in the dispersion in suspension; and the fine particles of "bentonite disperse between the larger particles of sand, thereby filling the voids and increasing the compressive strength of the dispersion when it has dried.
Bentonite is a perfectly safe product as evidenced by its use in cosmetics, household cleaners, paints and coatings.
Wollastonite may also be used, preferably with bentonite. It also acts as a filler and thickener. Since its particles are disc-shaped, smaller than sand particles and larger than bentonite particles, they therefore provide great compressive strength to the mixture.
Certain fibres are added to the dispersions such as a powdered natural cellulose (cotton) fibre which acts as a filler, thickener and binding and reinforcing agent. They serve to bond and reduce the aggregation of the fine aggregates while reducing plastic shrinkage by lending greater hydration to the mixture. This ensures that the rate at which the mixture bleeds and evaporates is slowed down. Monofilament polypropylene fibres may also be used, which also reduce plastic shrinkage and also improve resistance to frost, to impact and abrasion and also improves water and chemical penetration resistance.
The dispersions of the invention with the filler and other additives provides a safe, durable and environmentally friendly coating for tennis courts and other surfaces having the following advantages over prior art dispersions:
Contains no asbestos
Can be used on concrete and bitumen based floors
Resistance to frost, water and chemical penetration, impact. Abrasion, and cracking.
The surface has been shown to last longer with less maintenance costs, than the asbestos compositions.
A typical composition is provided in the following table
SRY
ITEM VOLUME PERCENTAGE RANGE
SBR based synthetic | 6kg 5-25 co-polymer
Wollastonite 3.75kg .05 —- 10 of solids volume
Arbocell (Trade Mark) 600g .05 of liquid volume
Fibrin (Trade Mark) 0.006 — 1.5
The colour of choice (based on availability of pigments), is derived from a mixing chrome oxide pigment with the above mixture at the rate of 7,5 kg of pigment : 109 kg of slurry. The depth of the colour required can be manipulated by adjusting the quantity of pigment.
The surface can also be coloured by the used of the following mixture: 180 litres of water 7,5 litres of SBR based synthetic co-polymer (Duralatex by ABE or similar) 1,8 kg of Arbocell BC 200
Pigment as required.
