Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to the heat treatment of beans and the like vegetable matter in : particulate form.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Certain beans, and particularly soya beans, contain undesirable substances such as the trypsin eliminator enzyme. Soya beans are generally heat treated on a hot plate or during : an extrusion process in which the pressure of the extrusion raises the temperature. In the latter case, the desired temperature of about 160 degrees for the decomposition of the enzyme 1s sometimes achieved but the temperature is not consistent with the result that some enzyme remains in the product and, where the temperature is higher than 160 degrees, decomposition of other constituents may occur.
In the heated plate treatment, the beans are unevenly heated with the result that not all of the enzyme is decomposed and the beans nearest the plate can become scorched and valuable constituents decomposed.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a consistent temperature for the heat : treatment of particulate vegetable material.
THE INVENTION
According to the invention apparatus for the heat treatment of particulate vegetable material includes a fluidised bed plenum for the material to be treated, and means to introduce heated air at a predetermined pressure and temperature into the plenum.
In a preferred form of the invention, a thermostat is provided to control the temperature.

The apparatus of the invention ensures that the material is evenly heated and at the required temperature. In the case of soya beans, the enzyme can be completely eliminated.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional side view of apparatus according to the invention.
In the drawing a reaction chamber 10 is provided for the vegetable material 12 which is supported on an inverted truncated conical gill plate 14. This plate is in communication with a plenum 16.
The plenum receives hot air via inlet 18 and gas flame bummer 20 whence it travels through pipe 24 to fan 26 and then to the plenum. The fan has twin blowers and may include temperature controlling means. The air pressure is sufficient to maintain the vegetable material in fluidised state.
The gill plate 14 has a central opening 30 with a hydraulically controlled plug 32 so that the treated material can be transferred to the conveyor 34.
The material to be treated is introduced by means of screw conveyor into the inlet 36.
Water sprays 40 are provided at the locations indicated and a vent 42 controlled by a butterfly valve communicates the chamber with the atmosphere.
The apparatus can be used for a variety of vegetable material such as soya beans, peanuts, cashew nuts, coffee beans, sunflower seeds and others.
The product may be used without further treatment for animal feed and even for some products for human consumption.

In the case of beans, for example, the inner atmosphere of the chamber must be fully saturated. This is ensured by using a thermostat as well as a dry/wet bulb controller- the dry bulb to monitor and maintain the temperature and the wet bulb for controlling the humidity. The water sprays may be used for increasing the humidity and the butterfly valve should be closed.
The cooking time, based on one ton of beans at 95 degrees Centigrade is 20 minutes and the beans are then dried for ten minutes at 110 degrees.
