Description

배터리 셀 에이징 장치 및 이를 이용하는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법
본 발명은 배터리 셀 에이징 장치 및 이를 이용하는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 출원은 2024년 7월 1일에 출원된, 한국 출원 번호 제10-2024-0086439호 및 2025년 2월 18일에 출원된, 한국 출원 번호 제10-2025-0020979호의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 출원은 여기에 전체로서 참조된다.
이차 전지는 일차 전지와 달리 복수 번의 충방전이 가능하다. 이차 전지는 핸드셋, 노트북, 무선 청소기 등의 다양한 무선 기기의 에너지원으로 광범위하게 사용되고 있다. 최근, 에너지 밀도 개선 및 규모의 경제로 인해 이차 전지의 단위 용량당 제조 비용이 획기적으로 감소하고, BEV(battery electric vehicle)의 항속길이가 연료 차량과 동등한 수준으로 증가함에 따라, 이차 전지의 주요 쓰임새는 모바일 기기에서 모빌리티로 이동하고 있다.
이차 전지는 전극 공정, 조립 공정 및 활성화 공정을 통해 제조된다. 전극 공정에서, 양극, 음극 및 분리막을 포함하는 전극 어셈블리가 제공될 수 있다. 조립 공정에서, 전극 어셈블리 및 전해액은 케이스에 내장될 수 있다. 활성화 공정에서, 조립된 배터리 셀은 충전, 방전 및 에이징 단계들을 거칠 수 있다. 활성화 공정에 의해 배터리 셀은 전기 에너지에 의해 활성화되고 안정될 수 있다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상된 배터리 셀을 제공할 수 있는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치를 제공하고자 하는 것이다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상이 해결하고자 하는 과제는 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상된 배터리 셀을 제공할 수 있는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법을 제공하고자 하는 것이다.
상술한 과제를 해결하기 위한 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치가 제공된다. 배터리 셀 에이징 장치는 전극 단자가 삽입되기 위한 개구를 포함하는 플라스틱 커버; 및 상기 플라스틱 커버 내의 수분 공급층을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 수분 공급층 상의 산화 방지층을 더 포함할 수 있다.
상기 산화 방지층은 전이 금속을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 전극 단자는 전극에 연결되고, 상기 전극은 제1 금속을 포함하고, 상기 산화 방지층은 제2 금속을 포함하고, 상기 제2 금속은 상기 제1 금속보다 표준 환원 전위가 낮을 수 있다.
상기 수분 공급층은 상기 산화 방지층과 상기 플라스틱 커버 사이에 개재될 수 있다.

상술한 과제를 해결하기 위한 본 발명의 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 배터리 셀 에이징 방법이 제공된다. 배터리 셀 에이징 방법은, 전극 어셈블리 및 전극 단자를 포함하는 배터리 셀을 조립하는 단계; 상기 배터리 셀에 전해액을 주입하는 단계; 상기 배터리 셀을 충전 또는 방전하는 단계; 및 상기 배터리 셀을 에이징하는 단계를 포함하고, 상기 프리 에이징 단계에서, 상기 배터리 셀의 상기 전극 단자는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치에 의해 커버되고, 상기 배터리 셀 에이징 장치는 상기 전극 단자가 삽입되기 위한 개구를 포함하는 플라스틱 커버 및 상기 플라스틱 커버 내의 수분 공급층을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기 배터리 셀 에이징 장치는 상기 수분 공급층 상의 산화 방지층을 더 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 산화 방지층 및 수분 공급층을 포함하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치가 제공될 수 있다. 산화 방지층은 배터리 셀의 전극보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하며, 수분 공급층은 산화 방지층에 수분을 공급해 산화 방지층의 산화를 촉진시킨다. 이에 의해, 프리 에이징 단계에서 전극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 이에 의해, 배터리 셀의 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상될 수 있다.
본 발명의 예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 산화 방지층 및 수분 공급층을 포함하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치를 이용하는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법이 제공될 수 있다. 이에 의해, 프리 에이징 단계에서 전극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 이에 의해, 배터리 셀의 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상될 수 있다.
본 발명의 예시적인 실시예들에서 얻을 수 있는 효과는 이상에서 언급한 효과들로 제한되지 아니하며, 언급되지 않은 다른 효과들은 이하의 설명으로부터 본 개시의 예시적인 실시예들이 속하는 기술분야에서 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게 명확하게 도출되고 이해될 수 있다. 즉, 본 개시의 예시적인 실시예들을 실시함에 따른 의도하지 않은 효과들 역시 본 개시의 예시적인 실시예들로부터 당해 기술분야의 통상의 지식을 가진 자에 의해 도출될 수 있다.

구체적으로, 배터리 셀(121)은 양극 단자(121P) 및 음극 단자(121N)를 포함할 수 있다. 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)는 배터리 셀(121)의 음극 단자(121N)를 커버할 수 있다.
이하에서, 도 2를 참조하여 배터리 셀(121)에 대해 상세히 설명하고, 도 3 내지 도 5를 참조하여 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)에 대해 상세히 설명하겠다.
도 2를 함께 참조하면, 배터리 셀(121)은 케이스(121C), 전극 어셈블리(121EA), 양극 단자(121P) 및 음극 단자(121N)를 포함할 수 있다. 배터리 셀(121)은 전해액을 더 포함할 수 있다.
예시적인 실시예들에 따르면, 배터리 셀(121)은 원통형 배터리 셀, 각형 배터리 셀 및 파우치 형 배터리 셀 중 하나를 포함할 수 있다. 원통형 배터리 셀의 전극 어셈블리는 원통형 금속 캔에 내장된다. 각형 배터리 셀의 전극 어셈블리는 각형 금속 캔에 내장된다. 파우치 형 배터리 셀의 전극 어셈블리는 알루미늄 라미네이트 시트를 포함하는 파우치 케이스에 내장된다. 이하에서는, 배터리 셀(121)이 파우치 형 배터리 셀을 포함하는 예시에 기초하여 본 발명의 기술적 사상이 설명되나, 당업계의 통상의 기술자는 여기에 설명된 바에 기초하여, 배터리 셀(121)이 원통형 배터리 셀 및 각형 배터리 셀 중 하나를 포함하는 예시에 용이하게 도달할 수 있을 것이다.
전극 어셈블리(121EA)는 양극, 음극, 및 양극과 음극 사이에 개재된 분리막을 포함할 수 있다. 전극 어셈블리(121EA)는 젤리-롤 타입 및 스택 타입 중 어느 하나일 수 있다. 젤리 롤 타입의 전극 어셈블리(121EA)는 양극, 음극 및 그들 사이에 개재된 분리막의 권취 구조를 포함할 수 있다. 스택 타입의 전극 어셈블리(121EA)는 순차로 적층된 복수의 양극들, 복수의 음극들 및 그들 사이에 개재된 복수의 분리막들을 포함할 수 있다. 본 명세서에서, 전극은 양극 및/또는 음극을 지칭할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 전극은 음극을 지칭하거나, 양극을 지칭하거나, 또는 양극 및 음극을 아울러 지칭하는 말일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 전극은 음극을 지칭하는 것을 포함하며, 본 명세서에서 전극 및 전극 단자에 관한 기재는 음극 및 음극 단자에 대하여도 적용되는 것을 포함할 수 있다.

구체적으로, 배터리 셀(121)의 프리 에이징 공정이 진행되는 동안, 케이스(121C) 내에서 음극의 음극 집전체가 전해액에 노출되어 음극 집전체의 전위가 상승하면, 상기 음극 집전체에 포함된 금속(예를 들어, 상기 제1 금속)이 전해액에 녹아 나오는 탈리 현상 또는 덴드라이드 형성 등이 야기될 수 있다. 이때, 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따른 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)에 의하면, 상기 음극의 음극 집전체에 포함된 금속(예를 들어, 상기 제1 금속)보다 환원성이 큰 금속(예를 들어, 상기 제2 금속)을 포함하는 산화 방지층(230)이 산화되며 음극 단자(121N)로 전자를 전달할 수 있고, 이 전자는 케이스(121C) 내에서 음극 단자(121N)와 연결된 상기 음극의 음극 집전체로 전달될 수 있다. 이에 의해, 상기 음극의 산화를 방지할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 상기 음극 집전체의 산화를 방지할 수 있다. 특히, 수분 공급층(220)은 산화 방지층(230)에 수분을 공급하여 산화 방지층(230)의 산화를 촉진시킬 수 있다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따른 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)에서, 산화 방지층(230)은 배터리 셀(121)의 전극보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여, 상기 전극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 산화 방지층(230)은 배터리 셀(121)의 음극보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여, 상기 음극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 산화 방지층(230)은 배터리 셀(121)의 음극 집전체보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여, 상기 음극 집전체가 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
실시예들에서, 산화 방지층(230)은 산화하며 전극을 환원시킬 수 있는데, 수분 공급층(220)은 산화 방지층(230)에 수분을 공급하여 상기 산화 방지층(230)의 산화 및 상기 전극의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 수분 공급층(220)은 상기 음극의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 수분 공급층(220)은 상기 음극 집전체의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다.

도 6을 참조하면, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200A)는 전극 단자가 삽입되기 위한 개구(OP)를 포함하는 플라스틱 커버(210), 플라스틱 커버(210) 내에 개재되는 수분 공급층(220A) 및 산화 방지층(230A)을 포함할 수 있다.

본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따라, 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상된 배터리 셀(121)을 제공할 수 있는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200B)가 제공될 수 있다.
(제4 실시예)
도 8은 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따른 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200, 도 1 참조)를 이용한 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)을 나타낸 순서도이다. 이하에서, 도 1 내지 도 3, 및 도 8을 함께 참조하여, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)를 이용한 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)에 대해 설명하겠다.
우선, 전극 어셈블리 및 전극 단자를 포함하는 배터리 셀을 조립하는 단계(S11)가 수행될 수 있다.
구체적으로, 도 1 및 도 2에 예시된 바와 같은 배터리 셀(121)을 조립할 수 있다. 배터리 셀(121)은 전극 어셈블리(121EA) 및 전극 단자를 포함할 수 있다. 전극 단자는 예를 들어, 양극 단자(121P) 및/또는 음극 단자(121N)를 포함할 수 있다.
배터리 셀을 조립하는 단계(S11)에서, 믹싱 공정, 코팅 공정, 롤프레싱 공정, 선택적 슬리팅 공정 및 노칭 공정을 포함하는 전극 공정이 수행될 수 있다. 이어서, 케이스(121C)에 전극 어셈블리(121EA)를 내장하는 공정이 수행될 수 있다.
이어서, 전해액을 주액하는 단계(S12)가 수행될 수 있다. 전해액은 케이스(121C) 내에 주액될 수 있다.
이어서, 배터리 셀에 전해액이 함침되는 것을 대기하는 프리 에이징(pre-aging) 단계(S13)가 수행될 수 있다. 프리 에이징 공정의 키는, 전해액이 양극 및 음극 모두에 고르게 스며들도록, 전해질을 파우치 셀 내에 고르게 분산시키는 것이다. 프리 에이징 공정에 의해 리튬 이온의 이동도가 개선될 수 있다.
프리 에이징 단계(S13)는 이어지는 충전 또는 방전 단계(S14)를 진행하기 전에 양극과 음극의 전기적 연결을 완성하는 단계로서, 전해액의 함침이 충분히 이루어지지 않을 경우 전지 구동 중 덴드라이트 형성 및 용량 저하 등 이차 전지의 성능 및 신뢰성에 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 전해액의 함침성을 높이기 위하여, 프리 에이징하는 온도를 높이거나 또는 프리 에이징하는 시간을 늘리는 것 등을 고려할 수 있다.
그러나 위와 같이 프리 에이징 온도를 높이거나 시간을 늘릴 경우, 프리 에이징 공정 중 전극의 전해액에의 노출로 야기될 수 있는 전극 전위의 상승으로 인한 전극 금속의 산화, 및 이에 의한 금속의 탈리 현상 또는 덴드라이드 형성 등의 문제가 생길 수 있다.
상기와 같은 문제점을 개선하기 위해, 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따른 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)에서는, 프리 에이징 하는 단계(S14)에서 배터리 셀(121)의 전극 단자를 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)로 커버할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 프리 에이징 하는 단계(S14)에서 배터리 셀(121)의 음극 단자(121N)를 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)로 커버할 수 있다.
도 1 내지 도 3을 참조하여 설명한 것과 같이, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)는 산화 방지층(230) 및 수분 공급층(220)을 포함할 수 있다. 산화 방지층(230)은 배터리 셀(121)의 전극보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여, 상기 전극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)는 배터리 셀(121)의 음극 단자(121N)를 커버하며, 산화 방지층(230)은 음극 단자(121N)와 연결된 음극보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여 상기 음극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 산화 방지층(230)은 음극 단자(121N)와 연결된 음극 집전체보다 환원성이 높은 금속을 포함하여 상기 음극 집전체가 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
실시예들에서, 산화 방지층(230)은 산화하며 상기 전극을 환원시킬 수 있는데, 수분 공급층(220)은 산화 방지층(230)에 수분을 공급하여 상기 산화 방지층(230)의 산화 및 상기 전극의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 수분 공급층(220)은 상기 음극의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다. 예를 들어, 수분 공급층(220)은 상기 음극 집전체의 환원을 촉진시킬 수 있다.
이에 의해, 배터리 셀(121)의 성능 및 신뢰성을 향상시킬 수 있는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)이 제공될 수 있다.
프리 에이징 단계(S13)에 이어서, 배터리 셀(121)을 충전 또는 방전하는 단계(S14)가 수행될 수 있다.
배터리 셀(121)이 충전 또는 방전되는 동안, 배터리 셀(121)은 가압 지그에 의해 가압될 수 있다. 배터리 셀의 가압에 의해 가스 트랩(gas trap) 및 리튬 플레이팅이 방지될 수 있으며, SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interphase) 막의 균일성이 제고될 수 있다. 균일한 SEI 막을 포함하는 배터리 셀(121)은 상대적으로 짧은 충전 또는 방전 시간을 가질 수 있다.
최초의 충전에 의해 음극 표면에 SEI막이 형성될 수 있다. SEI는 배터리 셀(121)의 제조 후 처음으로 충전할 때 음극재 표면에 생기는 얇은 막이다. 배터리 셀(121)을 충전하면 배터리 셀 내 리튬 이온이 음극으로 이동하게 되고, 그 과정에서 전해질에 있던 물질들이 처음으로 전기 분해될 때 생기는 화학 반응으로 음극재 표면에 SEI 막이 생성될 수 있다. SEI는 일종의 분리막일 수 있다. SEI는 배터리 충전을 위해 리튬 이온이 양극에서 음극으로 이동하는 과정에서, 전해질의 추가 분해 반응을 방지할 수 있다.
이어서, 배터리 셀(121)을 에이징 하는 단계(S15)가 수행될 수 있다.
에이징 공정에서, 충전 또는 방전된 배터리 셀(121)이 안정화되도록 배터리 셀(121)은 상온에서 소정의 시간 동안 보관될 수 있다.
도 1 내지 도 3, 및 도 8을 참조하여 설명한 본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따르면, 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)를 이용하는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)이 제공될 수 있다. 배터리 셀 에이징 장치(200)는 프리 에이징 하는 단계(S14)가 수행되는 동안 배터리 셀(121)의 음극 단자를 커버하여, 이와 연결된 배터리 셀(121)의 음극이 산화하는 것을 방지할 수 있다.
본 발명의 기술적 사상에 의한 실시예들에 따라, 성능 및 신뢰성이 향상된 배터리 셀(121)을 제공할 수 있는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법(S10)이 제공될 수 있다.
이상, 도면과 실시예 등을 통해 본 발명을 보다 상세히 설명하였다. 그러나, 본 명세서에 기재된 도면 또는 실시예 등에 기재된 구성은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 불과할 뿐이고 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 모두 대변하는 것은 아니므로, 본 출원시점에 있어서 이들을 대체할 수 있는 다양한 균등물과 변형예들이 있을 수 있음을 이해하여야 한다.

Claims (14)

  1. 전극 단자가 삽입되기 위한 개구를 포함하는 플라스틱 커버; 및
    상기 플라스틱 커버 내의 수분 공급층을 포함하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  2. 제1 항에 있어서,
    상기 수분 공급층 상의 산화 방지층을 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  3. 제2 항에 있어서,
    상기 산화 방지층은 전이 금속을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  4. 제3 항에 있어서,
    상기 전극 단자는 전극에 연결되고,
    상기 전극은 제1 금속을 포함하고,
    상기 산화 방지층은 제2 금속을 포함하고,
    상기 제2 금속은 상기 제1 금속보다 표준 환원 전위가 낮은 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  5. 제2 항에 있어서,
    상기 수분 공급층은 상기 산화 방지층과 상기 플라스틱 커버 사이에 개재된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  6. 제2 항에 있어서,
    상기 전극 단자는 음극에 연결된 음극 단자이고,
    상기 음극은 제1 금속을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  7. 제6 항에 있어서,
    상기 음극은 상기 제1 금속을 포함하는 음극 집전체를 포함하고,
    상기 제1 금속은 구리(Cu)를 포함하고,
    상기 산화 방지층은 마그네슘(Mg), 알루미늄(Al), 및 아연(Zn) 중 선택되는 적어도 하나를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  8. 제1 항에 있어서,
    상기 수분 공급층은 하이드로콜로이드를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  9. 제1 항에 있어서,
    상기 플라스틱 커버는 상기 개구를 정의하는 제1 면, 제2 면, 제3 면, 및 제4 면을 더 포함하고,
    상기 제1 면 및 상기 제3 면은 서로 마주보고,
    상기 제2 면 및 상기 제4 면은 서로 마주보고,
    상기 수분 공급층은 상기 제1 면 및 상기 제3 면 상에 개재되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  10. 제9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제2 면 및 상기 제4 면은 상기 수분 공급층이 개재되지 않는 적어도 일부를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  11. 제9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 면 및 상기 제3 면 상에서, 상기 수분 공급층 상의 산화 방지층을 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  12. 제9 항에 있어서,
    상기 제1 면의 면적은 상기 제2 면의 면적보다 큰 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치.
  13. 전극 어셈블리 및 전극 단자를 포함하는 배터리 셀을 조립하는 단계;
    상기 배터리 셀에 전해액을 주입하는 단계;
    상기 배터리 셀을 프리 에이징(pre-aging)하는 단계;
    상기 배터리 셀을 충전 또는 방전하는 단계; 및
    상기 배터리 셀을 에이징하는 단계를 포함하고,
    상기 프리 에이징 단계에서, 상기 배터리 셀의 상기 전극 단자는 배터리 셀 에이징 장치에 의해 커버되고,
    상기 배터리 셀 에이징 장치는 상기 전극 단자가 삽입되기 위한 개구를 포함하는 플라스틱 커버 및 상기 플라스틱 커버 내의 수분 공급층을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는, 배터리 셀 에이징 방법.
  14. 제13 항에 있어서,
    상기 배터리 셀 에이징 장치는 상기 수분 공급층 상의 산화 방지층을 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀 에이징 방법.
