Definitions
- This disclosure relates to a heat exchanger having a heat transfer tube and an air conditioner equipped with a heat exchanger.
- a heat exchanger has been disclosed that includes a plurality of heat transfer tubes arranged in two rows, a pair of inlet/outlet headers to which one ends of the heat transfer tubes are connected and through which refrigerant circulating in a refrigerant circuit flows in and out, and a row transfer header to which the other ends of the heat transfer tubes are connected and which transfers refrigerant from the heat transfer tubes in one row to the heat transfer tubes in the other row (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
- the cross-sectional area of the inlet and outlet headers must be secured to prevent excessive pressure loss within them.
- the dimensions of row-to-row headers in the direction in which they adjoin are adjusted depending on the distance between the heat transfer tubes in one row and the heat transfer tubes in the other row. Therefore, depending on the shape of the inlet and outlet headers, the row-to-row headers may need to be larger, increasing material costs. In this case, the row-to-row headers only contribute to a small degree to heat exchange, reducing the cost-effectiveness of the heat exchanger.
- This disclosure has been made to solve the above-mentioned problems, and aims to provide a heat exchanger and an air conditioner equipped with a heat exchanger that improves cost performance while ensuring sufficient cross-sectional area for the inlet and outlet headers.
- the heat exchanger disclosed herein comprises a plurality of heat transfer tubes whose tube axes extend in a first direction, a first inlet/outlet header into which one ends of a plurality of heat transfer tubes arranged in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction and constituting a first row are inserted, a second inlet/outlet header into which one ends of a plurality of heat transfer tubes arranged in the second direction and constituting a second row different from the first row are inserted, and a connection portion through which refrigerant flows between the heat transfer tubes that make up the first row and the heat transfer tubes that make up the second row, and at least one of the first inlet/outlet header and the second inlet/outlet header has a dimension in the first direction that is larger than its dimension in a third direction perpendicular to the first and second directions.
- the air conditioner according to the present disclosure includes the above-described heat exchanger, a compressor, an expansion section, and a heat exchanger different from the above-described heat exchanger.
- the heat exchanger disclosed herein can improve cost performance while ensuring sufficient cross-sectional area for the inlet and outlet headers.

- Figure 2 is a plan view showing the heat exchanger 7 according to embodiment 1.
- Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view showing the heat exchanger 7 according to embodiment 1.
- Figure 3 corresponds to a cross-sectional view of the heat exchanger 7 shown in Figure 2 taken along the A-A section.

- the second inlet/outlet header 17 is located on the downwind side.
- the heat transfer tubes 13 are heat tubes with one or more flow paths formed therein through which the refrigerant flows, and are, for example, flat tubes.
- the heat exchanger 7 is provided with multiple heat transfer tubes 13.
- the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 are arranged so that their tube axes extend in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction).
- the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 are also lined up in the X-axis direction to form rows.
- the heat exchanger 7 has a first row 31 and a second row 32 different from the first row 31, and the first row 31 and the second row 32 are lined up in the Z-axis direction.
- the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31 and the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 are arranged side by side in the horizontal direction.
- the fins 14, which are corrugated fins, facilitate heat exchange between the refrigerant flowing inside the heat transfer tubes 13 and the air.
- the heat exchanger 7 has multiple fins 14. Each fin 14 is disposed between four adjacent heat transfer tubes 13 in the X-axis direction. Each fin 14 is disposed across the first row 31 and the second row 32. That is, each fin 14 contacts two heat transfer tubes 13 on one side and two adjacent heat transfer tubes 13 on the other side. The center of the fin 14 in the Z-axis direction, i.e., the portion between the first row 31 and the second row 32, does not contact the heat transfer tubes 13. Instead of being configured to span the first row 31 and the second row 32, each fin 14 may be disposed between two adjacent heat transfer tubes 13 in the X-axis direction corresponding to the first row 31 and the second row 32.
- the row transfer header 15 is disposed opposite the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17, and is a header into which the upper ends of the heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the first row 31 and the second row 32 are inserted.
- the row transfer header 15 distributes the refrigerant that has merged from the heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the first row 31 to the heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the second row 32.
- the row transfer header 15 distributes the refrigerant that has merged from the heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the second row 32 to the heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the first row 31.
- the row transfer header 15 corresponds to a "connection portion" that allows refrigerant to circulate between the heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31 and the heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 in this disclosure.
- the first inlet/outlet header 16 is a header arranged so that its pipe axis extends horizontally (in the X-axis direction in Figure 3).

- a refrigerant pipe 4 is connected to the first inlet/outlet header 16.
- the first inlet/outlet header 16 is connected to the expansion section 9 of the heat exchanger 7 via the refrigerant pipe 4.
- the first inlet/outlet header 16 allows the refrigerant that has joined from the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the first row 31 to flow out into the refrigerant pipe 4 between the expansion section 9 and the heat exchanger 7.
- the first inlet/outlet header 16 distributes the refrigerant that has flowed in from the refrigerant pipe 4 between the expansion section 9 and the heat exchanger 7 to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the first row 31.
- the second inlet/outlet header 17 is a header arranged so that its pipe axis extends horizontally (in Figure 3, the X-axis direction), and is adjacent to the first inlet/outlet header 16 in a direction perpendicular to the vertical direction and the direction in which the pipe axis extends.
- the horizontal direction in which the header's pipe axis extends will be referred to as the header pipe axis direction (X-axis direction)
- the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction) the header adjacent direction
- first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 may be simply referred to as inlet/outlet headers.
- the lower ends of multiple heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in a second row 32 are inserted into the second inlet/outlet header 17.
- a refrigerant pipe 4 is connected to the second inlet/outlet header 17.
- the heat exchanger 7 has the second inlet/outlet header 17 connected to the flow path switching device 6 by the refrigerant pipe 4.
- the second inlet/outlet header 17 distributes the refrigerant that flows in from the refrigerant pipe 4 between the flow path switching device 6 and the heat exchanger 7 to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the second row 32.
- the second inlet/outlet header 17 allows the refrigerant that has merged from the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 arranged in the second row 32 to flow out into the refrigerant pipe 4 between the flow path switching device 6 and the heat exchanger 7.
- the heat exchanger 7 may also be configured such that the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are integrally molded, with a partition (not shown) in the center between the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 that partitions the internal space.
- the refrigerant flowing in from the refrigerant piping 4 connecting the flow path switching device 6 and the heat exchanger 7 is distributed in the second inlet/outlet header 17 to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32.
- the refrigerant flowing through the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 joins in the row transfer header 15 and is distributed to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31.
- the refrigerant flowing through the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31 joins in the first inlet/outlet header 16 and flows out into the refrigerant piping 4 that connects the expansion section 9 and the heat exchanger 7. Furthermore, when the heat exchanger 7 functions as an evaporator, the refrigerant flowing in from the refrigerant piping 4 connecting the expansion section 9 and the heat exchanger 7 is distributed in the first inlet/outlet header 16 to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31.
- the refrigerant flowing through the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31 joins at the row-to-row header 15 and is distributed to the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32.
- the refrigerant flowing through the multiple heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 joins at the second inlet/outlet header 17 and flows out into the refrigerant pipe 4 that connects the flow switching device 6 and the heat exchanger 7.
- first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 have a vertically elongated shape in which the length in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction) is longer than the length in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction).
- the vertical dimension is h [mm] and the dimension in the header adjacent direction is W [mm]
- the relationship h > W is satisfied.
- At least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 has a vertically elongated shape in which the length h in the up-down direction (Y-axis direction) is longer than the length W in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction). Therefore, when the cross-sectional area of the headers is the same, the dimension in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction) of the row-to-row header 15, which contributes less to heat exchange, can be reduced compared to when h ⁇ W. Furthermore, even when the fins 14 are arranged across the first row 31 and the second row 32, the area of the middle portion of the fin 14, which does not contact the heat transfer tubes 13 and contributes less to heat exchange, can be reduced. Therefore, according to embodiment 1, cost performance can be improved while maintaining the cross-sectional area of the inlet/outlet headers.
- the orientation in which the heat exchanger 7 is arranged is not limited to the example described above.
- the heat exchanger 7 may be arranged at an angle, for example.
- the vertical direction (Y-axis direction) is an example of the "first direction” in the present disclosure.
- the header pipe axis direction (X-axis direction) is an example of the "second direction” in the present disclosure, and the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction) is an example of the "third direction” in the present disclosure.
- the lower end of the heat transfer tube 13 is an example of the "one end” in the present disclosure
- the upper end of the heat transfer tube 13 is an example of the "other end” in the present disclosure.
- FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view showing a heat exchanger 7A according to embodiment 2.
- embodiment 2 differs from embodiment 1 in that an inner pipe 18 is provided inside the inlet/outlet header.
- the following mainly describes the parts that differ from embodiment 1, and parts that are the same as or equivalent to those in embodiment 1 are designated by the same reference numerals and will not be described again.
- the heat exchanger 7A has heat transfer tubes 13, fins 14, row headers 15, a first inlet/outlet header 16, a second inlet/outlet header 17, and an inner pipe 18.
- At least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 has a vertically elongated shape in which the length in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction) is longer than the length in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction).
- the vertical dimension is h [mm] and the dimension in the header adjacent direction is W [mm]
- the relationship h > W is satisfied.
- An inner pipe 18 is provided inside at least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17.
- a double-pipe structure is formed by the inner pipe 18 and the inlet/outlet header in which the inner pipe 18 is provided. Note that while Figure 4 illustrates an example in which the inner pipe 18 is inserted only inside the first inlet/outlet header 16, the inner pipe 18 may also be inserted only inside the second inlet/outlet header 17. Furthermore, the inner pipe 18 may also be inserted inside both the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17.
- the inner pipe 18 is a hollow pipe arranged so that its pipe axis extends in the header pipe axial direction (X-axis direction). While Figure 4 illustrates an example in which the cross-sectional shape of the inner pipe 18 is a perfect circle, the cross-sectional shape of the inner pipe 18 may be an ellipse, semicircle, or other shape.
- the inner pipe 18 has multiple small holes 18a formed therein. The multiple small holes 18a are aligned in the header pipe axial direction (X-axis direction).
- the internal space of the inner pipe 18 communicates with the flow path of the refrigerant piping 4.
- the internal space of the inner pipe 18 communicates with the space surrounded by the outside of the inner pipe 18 and the inside of the first inlet/outlet header 16 via the multiple small holes 18a.
- the inner pipe 18 When the inner pipe 18 is inserted inside the first inlet/outlet header 16, the inner pipe 18 allows the refrigerant that flows in from the first inlet/outlet header 16 through the small holes 18a to flow out to the refrigerant piping 4 connecting the heat exchanger 7A and the expansion section 9 when the heat exchanger 7A functions as a condenser. Furthermore, when the heat exchanger 7A functions as an evaporator, the inner pipe 18 distributes the refrigerant that flows in from the refrigerant piping 4 connecting the heat exchanger 7A and the expansion section 9 to the first inlet/outlet header 16 through the small holes 18a.
- At least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 has a vertically elongated shape in which the length h in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction) is longer than the length W in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction). Therefore, according to the second embodiment, as in the first embodiment, it is possible to improve cost performance while ensuring the cross-sectional area of the inlet/outlet headers.
- an inner pipe 18 having small holes 18a is provided in at least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17.
- the small holes 18a provided in the inner pipe 18 allow the gas-liquid two-phase refrigerant that flows into the inner pipe 18 from the refrigerant piping 4 to be sprayed, making it possible to make the flow resistance ratio of each heat transfer tube 13 closer to uniform. This allows the heat exchanger 7A to improve its refrigerant distribution performance.
- the heat transfer tubes 13 are fixed in a protruding state inside the inlet/outlet headers.
- the inner pipe 18 when the inner pipe 18 is positioned inside the inlet/outlet headers, the inner pipe 18 must be positioned close to the bottom of the inlet/outlet headers so as not to interfere with the protruding portion of the heat transfer tube 13. In this case, if the distance between the lower end of the heat transfer tube 13 and the upper part of the inner pipe 18 is small, the refrigerant flow into the heat transfer tube 13 may be obstructed, resulting in poor refrigerant distribution performance.
- Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view showing a heat exchanger 7B according to embodiment 3.
- embodiment 3 differs from embodiment 1 in that the positions of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 in the up-down direction (Y-axis direction) are different.
- the following mainly describes the parts that differ from embodiment 1, and parts that are the same as or equivalent to those in embodiment 1 are denoted by the same reference numerals and will not be described again.
- the heat exchanger 7B has heat transfer tubes 13, fins 14, row headers 15, a first inlet/outlet header 16, and a second inlet/outlet header 17.
- the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 of the heat exchanger 7B are arranged at different levels. That is, the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are positioned at different levels in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction). Specifically, the lower end of the second inlet/outlet header 17 is positioned higher than the upper end of the first inlet/outlet header 16. While Figure 5 shows the first inlet/outlet header 16 positioned on the lower side and the second inlet/outlet header 17 positioned on the upper side, the positions may be reversed. That is, the first inlet/outlet header 16 may be positioned on the upper side and the second inlet/outlet header 17 may be positioned on the lower side. Furthermore, the heat transfer tubes 13 inserted in the inlet/outlet header positioned on the upper side are shorter than the heat transfer tubes 13 inserted in the inlet/outlet header positioned on the lower side.
- the end of the first inlet/outlet header 16 facing the second inlet/outlet header 17 (the right end in Figure 5) is closer to the end of the second inlet/outlet header 17 opposite the first inlet/outlet header 16 (the right end in Figure 5) than the end of the second inlet/outlet header 17 facing the first inlet/outlet header 16 (the left end in Figure 5).
- the lower end of the second inlet/outlet header 17 is located at a higher position than the upper end of the first inlet/outlet header 16.
- At least one of the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 has a vertically elongated shape in which the length h in the vertical direction (Y-axis direction) is longer than the length W in the header adjacent direction (Z-axis direction). Therefore, according to the third embodiment, as in the first embodiment, it is possible to improve cost performance while ensuring the cross-sectional area of the inlet/outlet headers.
- first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are arranged at the same height, the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 will come into contact with each other unless a distance is maintained between them in the header adjacency direction (Z-axis direction).
- first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are arranged at different levels. Therefore, the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 can be arranged so that a portion of the second inlet/outlet header 17 overlaps a portion of the first inlet/outlet header 16 when viewed from above.
- the length of the row-transfer header 15 in the header adjacency direction can be made smaller compared to when the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are arranged at the same height. Furthermore, the area of the portion of the fin 14 that is not in contact with the heat transfer tube 13 can be made smaller compared to when the first inlet/outlet header 16 and the second inlet/outlet header 17 are arranged at the same height. Therefore, according to embodiment 3, cost performance can be further improved.
- the row of heat transfer tubes 13 on the upwind side prevents air from being blown to the row of heat transfer tubes 13 on the downwind side.
- the inlet/outlet header on the downwind side may be positioned higher than the other inlet/outlet header.
- the length of the heat transfer tubes 13 inserted in the inlet/outlet header on the downwind side may be shorter than the heat transfer tubes 13 inserted in the other inlet/outlet header.
- Embodiment 4 is a cross-sectional view showing a heat exchanger 7C according to embodiment 4.
- embodiment 4 differs from embodiment 1 in that the heat transfer tubes 13 constituting the first row 31 and the heat transfer tubes 13 constituting the second row 32 are connected by hairpin tubes 19.
- the following mainly describes the differences from embodiment 1, and the same or corresponding parts as embodiment 1 are denoted by the same reference numerals and will not be described again.
- heat exchanger 7C has heat transfer tubes 13, fins 14, a first inlet/outlet header 16, a second inlet/outlet header 17, and hairpin tubes 19. Furthermore, heat exchanger 7C does not have the row-to-row header 15 described in embodiment 1.
- the heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31 and the heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 are connected by hairpin tubes 19.
- the hairpin tubes 19 are hollow tubes that have been bent in a hairpin shape (U-shape).
- the same number of hairpin tubes 19, heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the first row 31, and heat transfer tubes 13 that make up the second row 32 are provided in the heat exchanger 7.
- One end of each hairpin tube 19 is connected to the upper end of the heat transfer tube 13 that makes up the first row 31, and the other end of the hairpin tube 19 is connected to the upper end of the heat transfer tube 13 that makes up the second row 32.
