- the breathing method disclosed herein involves performing specific breathing at an interval of 0.20 Hz or less in an atmosphere of a scent generated from a fragrance composition containing at least one selected from the group consisting of jasmine sambac and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, and can provide sustained stress relief.
- breathing at intervals of 0.20 Hz or less (sometimes referred to as "specific breathing") is slower than normal breathing, occurring approximately 10 times every 50 seconds. While this type of slow breathing is easy to perform, it has similar properties to breathing in yoga breathing techniques, for example, and therefore reduces the breathing rate compared to normal breathing, providing a degree of stress relief even when performed alone. However, if this specific breathing is stopped, breathing will typically return to normal, and the breathing rate will return to the normal breathing rate. As a result, the stress relief effect of performing specific breathing is no longer obtained.
- the inventors have found that when such slow specific breathing is performed in an atmosphere of an aroma (sometimes referred to as the "specific aroma") emitted from a fragrance composition containing at least one member selected from the group consisting of jasmine sambac and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, the breathing rate continues to decrease compared to the breathing rate during normal breathing even after the specific breathing has stopped, and the stress relief effect is sustained. In other words, it is believed that the combination of the specific aroma and the specific breathing contributes to sustained stress relief.
- an aroma sometimes referred to as the "specific aroma”
- a fragrance composition containing at least one member selected from the group consisting of jasmine sambac and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene
- “sustainably reducing stress” means that during and for a certain period after specific breathing, one feels that stress has been reduced, or that one's breathing rate is lower than that of normal breathing. Note that in this disclosure, “breathing techniques that sustainably reduce stress” are different from methods of surgery, treatment, or diagnosis for humans.
- the breathing method of the present disclosure is carried out in an atmosphere of a scent generated from a fragrance composition containing at least one member selected from the group consisting of jasmine sambac and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene.

- the specific breathing of (3) was not performed, the breathing in the resting state of (4) was performed for 20 minutes.
- the Kraepelin test was adopted as the stress task.
- the specific breathing was performed by the subject so that the breathing interval was 0.20 Hz or less. Specifically, the subject was asked to breathe out lightly first, then count 1, 2, 3, 4 in his head while slowly inhaling air from his nose, hold his breath once, and then count 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 in his head while slowly exhaling thinly and long from his mouth.
- ⁇ result> 1 to 3 when specific breathing is performed after a stress task is presented, the respiration rate is lower than the respiration rate during normal breathing, regardless of the presence or absence of fragrance, that is, stress is reduced.
- the presence or absence of the fragrance does not affect the reduction in respiration rate after specific breathing, and in the post-rest 1 stage, that is, within a short period of 2 to 5 minutes after the end of specific breathing, the reduced respiration rate returns to the respiration rate during normal breathing (the line with the respiration rate change rate of 1).
- Test Example 2 In Test Example 2, based on the results of the rate of change test of the confusion index shown below, the fragrance composition (B) was used to examine the stress reducing effect associated with the scent of jasmine sambac and the presence or absence of specific breathing.

Yuri MASAOKA, Sandy JACK, Christopher J. WARBURTON, and Ikuo HOMMA, "Breathing Patterns Associated with Trait Anxiety and Breathlessness in Humans", Japanese Journal of Physiology, 2004, Vol. 54, 465-470

ストレスを持続的に軽減する観点から、呼吸は、0.18Hz(50秒に9回)以下、0.16Hz(50秒に8回)以下、0.15Hz(60秒に9回)以下、0.14Hz(50秒に7回)以下、0.12Hz(50秒に6回)以下、0.10Hz(60秒に6回)以下、0.08Hz(50秒に4回)以下、又は0.06Hz(50秒に3回)以下であることが好ましい。かかる呼吸間隔の下限値としては特に制限はなく、例えば、0.01Hz(100秒に1回)以上、0.03Hz(100秒に3回)以上、又は0.05Hz(60秒に3回)以上とすることができる。
