Description

電解セルスタック装置及び電解セルスタック集合体
 本発明は、電解セルスタック装置及び電解セルスタック集合体に関するものである。
 従来、所定方向に積層された複数の電解セルを備える電解セルスタック装置が知られている。
 特許文献1では、一本の原料ガス流路から全ての電解セルそれぞれに原料ガスを分配する手法が開示されている。

 しかしながら、特許文献1に記載の手法では、各電解セルにおいて温度分布が生じ、セラミック材料で構成される電解セルが破損しやすい。具体的には、原料ガスに含まれる原料の濃度は、原料ガスの流通方向における上流側に比べて下流側において顕著に低くなるため、反応が有利な上流側に電流が集中し、温度が高くなりやすい。その結果、電解セルのうち上流側部分より下流側部分の温度が低くなりやすい。
 一方で、効率向上の観点から原料ガスの利用率を高くする必要があるため、大過剰の原料ガスを投入するという方法は非実用的であり、各電解セルにおける温度分布を抑制することは困難であった。
 本発明の課題は、各電解セルにおける温度分布を抑制可能な電解セルスタック装置及び電解セルスタック集合体を提供することにある。
 本発明の第1の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上流側セル及び下流側セルを含む複数の電解セルが積層された電解セルスタック装置である。第1の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置において、前記上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの少なくとも一部は、前記下流側セルを通過する。
 本発明の第2の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上記第1の側面に係り、積層方向に隣り合う前記複数の電解セルすべてが上流下流の関係にあり、前記上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの全部が、前記下流側セルを通過する。
 本発明の第3の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上記第1又は2の側面に係り、前記上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれは、水素極、酸素極及び電解質を有し、前記原料ガスは、HOを含む。
 本発明の第4の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上記第1乃至第3いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記電解質の厚さは、前記下流側セルの前記電解質の厚さより厚い。
 本発明の第5の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上記第1乃至第4いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記水素極は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の酸化物系材料を含み、前記下流側セルの前記水素極は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の金属系材料を含む。
 本発明の第6の側面に係る電解セルスタック装置は、上記第1乃至第5いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記水素極を平面視したときの面積は、前記下流側セルの前記水素極を平面視したときの面積より小さい。
 本発明の第7の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、複数の上流側セルが積層された第1電解セルスタック装置と、複数の下流側セルが積層された第2電解セルスタック装置とを備える。前記第1電解セルスタック装置を通過した原料ガスの少なくとも一部は、前記第2電解セルスタック装置を通過する。
 本発明の第8の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、上記第1の側面に係り、前記第1電解セルスタック装置を通過した原料ガスの全部が、前記第2電解セルスタック装置を通過する。
 本発明の第9の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、上記第7の側面に係り、前記上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれは、水素極、酸素極及び電解質を有し、前記原料ガスは、HOを含む。
 本発明の第10の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、上記第7乃至第9いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記電解質の厚さは、前記下流側セルの前記電解質の厚さより厚い。
 本発明の第11の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、上記第7乃至第10いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記水素極は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の酸化物系材料を含み、前記下流側セルの前記水素極は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の金属系材料を含む。
 本発明の第12の側面に係る電解セルスタック集合体は、上記第7乃至第11いずれかの側面に係り、前記上流側セルの前記水素極を平面視したときの面積は、前記下流側セルの前記水素極を平面視したときの面積より小さい。
 本発明によれば、各電解セルにおける温度分布を抑制可能な電解セルスタック装置及び電解セルスタック集合体を提供することができる。

 (電解セルスタック装置10)
 本実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10について図面を参照しながら説明する。
 図1は、実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10の斜視図である。
 図1に示すように、x軸方向(積層方向)から平面視したときの電解セルスタック装置10の形状は矩形であるが、電解セルスタック装置10の平面形状は特に限られず、例えば、正方形、五角以上の多角形、円形、楕円形などにすることができる。
 図1に示すように、電解セルスタック装置10は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fと、第1エンドプレート12aと、第2エンドプレート12bとを備える。本明細書では、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fを電解セル11と略称する場合がある。
 第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fは、この順でx軸方向に積層されている。x軸方向は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの積層方向である。第1電解セル11aは、6つの電解セル11のうち第1エンドプレート12aに最も近い電解セルである。第6電解セル11fは、6つの電解セル11のうち第2エンドプレート12bに最も近い電解セル(すなわち、第1エンドプレート12aから最も離れた電解セル)である。積層された第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fは、第1及び第2エンドプレート12a,12bによって挟まれている。
 ここで、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fには、本発明に係る「上流側セル」及び「下流側セル」が含まれている。各電解セル11が上流側セル及び下流側セルのいずれに該当するかは、後述する原料ガスの流れ方向を基準として相対的に決定される。例えば、原料ガスの流れ方向において、第4電解セル11dは、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cの下流側に位置し、かつ、第5及び第6電解セル11e,11fの上流側に位置している。従って、第4電解セル11dは、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cに対しては「下流側セル」に相当し、第5及び第6電解セル11e,11fに対しては「上流側セル」に相当する。ただし、最上流に位置する第1電解セル11aが「下流側セル」となることはなく、最下流に位置する第6電解セル11fが「上流側セル」となることはない。
 このように、本実施形態では、積層方向(x軸方向)に隣り合うすべての電解セル11が上流下流の関係にある。すなわち、複数の電解セル11すべてにおいて、上流側セルと下流側セルが積層方向において常に隣接している。
 なお、本実施形態では、電解セルスタック装置10が第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fを備えているが、電解セル11の数は特に限られず2つ以上であればよい。
 図1に示すように、電解セルスタック装置10は、第1外面R1と、第2外面R2とを有する。第1外面R1は、x軸方向において第2外面R2の反対側に設けられる。第1外面R1は、第1エンドプレート12aの表面である。第1外面R1には、原料ガス入口13と空気入口14が形成されている。第2外面R2は、第2エンドプレート12bの表面である。第2外面R2には、原料ガス出口15と空気出口16が形成されている。
 図2は、図1のA-A断面図である。
 図2に示すように、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fそれぞれは、素子部20と、一対のインターコネクタ30と、フレーム40とを有する。
 本実施形態に係る素子部20は、平板型の固体酸化物形電解セル(SOEC)に用いられる周知の素子部である。素子部20は、水素極21と、電解質22と、酸素極23とを有する。電解質22は、水素極21と酸素極23の間に配置される。水素極21には、HOを含む原料ガスが供給される。
 原料ガスがHOのみを含む場合、水素極21は、下記(1)式に示す水電解の電気化学反応に従って、原料ガスからHを生成する。
 ・水素極21:HO+2e→H+O2-・・・(1)
 原料ガスがHOに加えてCOを含む場合、水素極21は、下記(2)、(3)、(4)式に示す共電解の電気化学反応に従って、原料ガスからH、CO及びO2-を生成する。
 ・水素極21:HO+CO+4e→CO+H+2O2-・・・(2)
 ・HOの電気化学反応:HO+2e→H+O2-・・・(3)
 ・COの電気化学反応:CO+2e→CO+O2-・・・(4)
 水素極21は、電極触媒を含んでいる。水素極21は、酸素イオン伝導性材料を含んでいてもよい。
 酸素極23には、電解質22を介して水素極21からO2-が伝達される。酸素極23は、下記(5)式の化学反応に従って、O2-からOを生成する。
 ・酸素極23:2O2-→O+4e・・・(5)
 素子部20としては、周知の電解セルに用いられる素子部を適用することができる。従って、素子部20の構成は適宜変更可能である。例えば、素子部20は、電解質22と酸素極23の間に配置される反応防止層を有していてもよい。なお、素子部20の好ましい構成については後述する。
 一対のインターコネクタ30は、素子部20を間に挟んでいる。インターコネクタ30としては、例えば、金属板を用いることができる。インターコネクタ30は、複数の第1接続部31と、複数の第2接続部32とを有する。各第1接続部31は、インターコネクタ30の一方の主面に形成されており、水素極21と電気的に接続される。各第2接続部32は、インターコネクタ30の他方の主面に形成されており、酸素極23と電気的に接続される。
 なお、本実施形態において、一対のインターコネクタ30は、隣接する2つの電解セル11によって共有されている。
 フレーム40は、電気絶縁性材料によって構成される。フレーム40は、電解セル11の周囲を取り囲む。フレーム40は、2つのインターコネクタ30の間を密封している。
 図2に示すように、素子部20の電解質22と、インターコネクタ30と、フレーム40とによって、素子部20の水素極21側に原料ガス流路P1が画定される。同様に、素子部20の電解質22と、インターコネクタ30と、フレーム40とによって、素子部20の酸素極23側に空気流路P2が画定される。
 ここで、図2に示すように、電解セルスタック装置10は、原料ガス供給路S1と、第1乃至第5接続路T1~T5と、原料ガス排出路S2とを有する。
 原料ガス供給路S1は、第1エンドプレート12aと、第1電解セル11aのインターコネクタ30及びフレーム40とに形成される。原料ガス供給路S1は、原料ガス入口13と第1電解セル11aの原料ガス流路P1とに連通する。
 第1乃至第5接続路T1~T5は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fそれぞれのインターコネクタ30及びフレーム40に形成される。x軸方向に垂直なy軸方向において、第1,第3及び第5接続路T1,T3,T5は、第2,第4及び第6接続路T2,T4,T6の反対側に設けられる。y軸方向は、各素子部20のうち電解質22の表面に沿った面方向であり、側面視における原料ガスの流通方向とおおよそ一致する。
 第1乃至第5接続路T1~T5は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fそれぞれの原料ガス流路P1どうしを交互に接続する。具体的には、第1接続路T1は、第1電解セル11aの原料ガス流路P1と、第2電解セル11bの原料ガス流路P1とに連通する。第2接続路T2は、第2電解セル11bの原料ガス流路P1と、第3電解セル11cの原料ガス流路P1とに連通する。第3及び第5接続路T3,T5は第1接続路T1と同様に構成されており、第4及び第6接続路T4,T6は第2接続路T2と同様に構成されている。
 原料ガス排出路S2は、第2エンドプレート12bと、第6電解セル11fのインターコネクタ30及びフレーム40とに形成される。原料ガス排出路S2は、第6電解セル11fの原料ガス流路P1と、原料ガス出口15とに繋がる。
 以上の通り、電解セルスタック装置10では、供給路S1と、第1乃至第5接続路T1~T5と、原料ガス排出路S2と、各電解セル11の原料ガス流路P1とによって、原料ガスの一本の流路が形成されている。従って、原料ガスは、下流側から上流側に向かって複数の電解セル11を順次通過していく。具体的には、次の通りである。原料ガス供給路S1から供給される原料ガスの全部は、第1電解セル11aの原料ガス流路P1を通過する。第1電解セル11aの原料ガス流路P1を通過した原料ガスの全部は、第1接続路T1を通って第2電解セル11bの原料ガス流路P1に供給され、第2電解セル11bの原料ガス流路P1を通過する。その後、第2電解セル11bの原料ガス流路P1を通過した原料ガスの全部は、第3乃至第6電解セル11c~11fの原料ガス流路P1を順次通過した後、原料ガス排出路S2から外部に排出される。
 このように、本実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10では、積層方向(x軸方向)に隣り合う複数の電解セル11すべてが上流下流の関係にあり、かつ、上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの全部が下流側セルを通過するため、上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれにおいて温度分布が生じることを抑制できる。
 例えば、第1電解セル11aを通過する原料ガスには、水素極21における生成物(H、又は、H及びCO)が徐々に混入するものの、全ての電解セル11それぞれに原料ガスを分配する場合に比べて、原料ガスに対する生成物の濃度の上昇率を抑えることができる。従って、第1電解セル11aの原料ガス流路P1内における原料の濃度差を小さくできるため、第1電解セル11aの水素極21のうち上流側部分と下流側部分において平衡電位差が生じることを抑制できる。よって、第1電解セル11aの水素極21における電気化学反応をy軸方向(面方向)において均一化できるため、第1電解セル11aに温度分布が生じることを抑制できる。この効果は、第1電解セル11aに対して下流側セルに相当する第2乃至第6電解セル11b~11fのいずれにおいても得られる。
 また、上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれに原料ガスを分配するとすれば、原料ガス入口13に近い電解セルと原料ガス入口13から離れた電解セルの両方に原料ガスを均等に分配することは困難である。一方で、本実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10では、上流側セルを通過した原料ガスが下流側セルを通過するため、上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれに原料ガスを均等に供給することができる。
 以上、電解セルスタック装置10における原料ガスの流れ方について説明した。第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fそれぞれの空気流路P2を介して空気入口14から空気出口16まで流れる空気の流れ方は特に限られない。空気は、原料ガスと同じような構成のルートを通って給排されてもよいし、原料ガスとは異なる構成のルートを通って給排されてもよい。
 (素子部20の好ましい構成)
 素子部20の好ましい構成について説明する。
 [電解質22の厚さ]
 上流側セルの電解質22の厚さは、下流側セルの電解質22の厚さより厚いことが好ましい。これによって、上流側セルの電解質22の内部抵抗が、下流側セルの電解質22の内部抵抗より大きくなるため、下流側セルに比べて上流側セルの発熱量を大きくすることができる。
 ここで、上流側セル及び下流側セルの構成が同じである場合、次に説明する通り、上流側セルの温度は下流側セルの温度より低くなる。まず、上流側セル及び下流側セルは電気的に直列に接続されているため、各セルに流れる電流値は同等であり、各セルにおいて発生するジュール熱も同等である。一方で、ネルンストの式によれば、下流側セルに比べて上流側セルの平衡電位は低いため、上流側セルにおいて、ジュール発熱と反応熱がつりあう熱中性電圧に達するには多くの熱が必要とされる。従って、上流側セルは下流側セルより吸熱側で作動することになるため、上流側セルの温度は下流側セルより低くなってしまう。
 そこで、上述の通り、上流側セルの電解質22を厚くして発熱量を大きくすることによって、上流側セルと下流側セルの間の温度差を抑制することができる。その結果、上流側セルと下流側セルの膨張収縮量差を低減できるため、電解セルスタック装置10の内部に偏った応力が生じ、セラミック材料で構成される電解セルが破損することを抑制できる。
 なお、本実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10において、下流側セルより上流側セルの電解質22の厚さが厚いという関係は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの全てにおいて成立することが特に好ましい。すなわち、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの電解質の厚さが、この順で段階的に小さくなっていることが好ましい。
 ただし、下流側セルより上流側セルの電解質22の厚さが厚いという関係は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fのうち少なくとも2つの電解セル11において成立していればよい。例えば、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11c(上流側セル)の電解質22の厚さが互いに同じであり、かつ、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11f(下流側セル)の電解質22の厚さより厚くてもよい。この場合であっても、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cと第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11fとの膨張収縮量差を低減することができる。
 また、電解質22の厚さは特に限られず、例えば1μm以上100μm以下とすることができる。電解質22の厚さは、x軸方向に沿った電解質22の断面SEM(電子顕微鏡)画像上において、無作為に選出した5か所の厚さを算術平均することによって得られる。
 [水素極21の触媒]
 上流側セルの水素極21は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の酸化物系材料を含み、かつ、下流側セルの水素極21は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の金属系材料を含むことが好ましい。
 上記酸化物系材料としては、SrTiO系材料、(La,Sr)CrO系材料、(La,Sr)(Al,Mn)O系材料、(Ce,Mn,Fe)O、SrFeNbO、(Sr,Fe)MoO、SrTiNbO、(La,Sr)VO、及びこれらのうち2つ以上を組み合わせた混合材料を用いることができる。これらのうちSrTiO系材料及び(La,Sr)CrO系材料が酸化物系材料として特に好ましい。
 SrTiO系材料、(La,Sr)CrO系材料、及び(La,Sr)(Al,Mn)O系材料は、Aサイト及びBサイトの一方又は両方に更に他の元素を含んでいてもよい。例えば、SrTiO系材料としては、(Sr,Pr)(Ti,Fe)O、(Sr,La)TiO、(Sr,La)(Ti,Cu)O、(Sr,La)(Ti,Ni)O、(Sr,La)(Fe,Ni)O、(Sr,La)(Ni,Ti)O、(Sr,Y)TiO、(Sr,La)(Ti,Mn)O、Sr(Ti,Nb)Oなどが挙げられる。また、(La,Sr)CrO系材料としては、(La,Sr)(Cr,Mn)O系材料、(La,Sr)(Cr,Ni)NiO系材料などが挙げられる。
 上記金属系材料としては、ニッケル(Ni)、コバルト(Co)、鉄(Fe)及びこれらのうち2つ以上を組み合わせた混合材料を用いることができる。
 上記酸化物系材料は、上記金属系材料に比べて、原料ガスに混入する不純物(例えば、硫黄)に対する高い耐性を有するため、不純物に被毒しても電極活性が低下しにくい。一方、上記金属系材料は、上記酸化物系材料に比べて、電子伝導性が高く、電極活性も高いため、電気化学反応を促進できる。
 従って、上流側セルの水素極21が酸化物系材料を電極触媒として含み、かつ、下流側セルの水素極21が金属系材料を電極触媒として含んでいることによって、上流側セルにおける電極活性の低下抑制と下流側セルにおける電極活性の向上とを両立させることができる。
 また、下流側セルの水素極21が含む金属系材料は、Niであることがより好ましい。Niは酸化しやすい性質を有しているが、上流側セルにおいてHが生成されるので、Niの酸化抑制のためのHを原料ガスに予め添加しておく必要をなくしたり、或いは、原料ガスにおけるHの添加量を低減させたりすることができる。
 上流側セル及び下流側セルの水素極21は、酸素イオン伝導性材料を含んでいてもよい。酸素イオン伝導性材料としては、YSZ、CSZ、ScSZ、ガドリニウムドープセリア(GDC)、サマリウムドープセリア(SDC)、ランタンドープセリア(LDC)、ランタンガレート(LSGM)及びこれらのうち2つ以上を組み合わせた混合材料を用いることができる。上流側セルに含まれる酸素イオン伝導性材料は、下流側セルに含まれる酸素イオン伝導性材料と同じであってもよいし異なっていてもよい。
 上流側セルの水素極21は、上記酸化物系材料と、任意で酸素イオン伝導性材料とを含む成形体を焼成することによって形成できる。下流側セルの水素極21は、上記金属系材料と、任意で酸素イオン伝導性材料とを含む成形体を焼成することによって形成できる。
 なお、本実施形態では、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの中に、上記酸化物系材料を含む水素極21を有する上流側セルと、上記金属系材料を含む水素極21を有する下流側セルとが少なくとも1つずつ存在していればよい。例えば、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11c(上流側セル)の水素極21が上記酸化物系材料を含み、かつ、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11f(下流側セル)の水素極21が上記金属系材料を含んでいてもよい。
 [水素極21の面積]
 上流側セルの水素極21をx軸方向から平面視したときの面積は、下流側セルの水素極21をx軸方向から平面視したときの面積より小さいことが好ましい。これによって、上流側セルの水素極21における電流密度が、下流側セルの水素極21における電流密度より大きくなるため、下流側セルに比べて上流側セルの発熱量を大きくすることができる。
 ここで、上述した通り、上流側セル及び下流側セルの構成が同じである場合、上流側セルの温度は下流側セルの温度より低くなる。そこで、上述の通り、上流側セルの水素極21の面積を小さくして発熱量を大きくすることによって、上流側セルと下流側セルの間の温度差を抑制することができる。その結果、上流側セルと下流側セルの膨張収縮量差を低減できるため、電解セルスタック装置10の内部に偏った応力が生じることを抑制できる。
 なお、本実施形態に係る電解セルスタック装置10において、下流側セルより上流側セルの水素極21の面積が小さいという関係は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの全てにおいて成立することが特に好ましい。すなわち、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fの水素極21の面積が、この順で段階的に大きくなっていることが好ましい。
 ただし、下流側セルより上流側セルの水素極21の面積が小さいという関係は、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fのうち少なくとも2つの電解セル11において成立していればよい。例えば、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11c(上流側セル)の水素極21の面積が互いに同じであり、かつ、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11f(下流側セル)の水素極21の面積より小さくてもよい。この場合であっても、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cと第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11fとの膨張収縮量差を低減することができる。
 (変形例)
 以上、本発明の実施形態について説明したが、本発明はこれらに限定されるものではなく、本発明の趣旨を逸脱しない限りにおいて種々の変更が可能である。
 [変形例1]
 上記実施形態では、上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの全部が下流側セルを通過することとしたが、これに限られない。上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの一部のみが下流側セルを通過してもよい。
 図3は、本変形例に係る電解セルスタック装置10a内を流れる原料ガスのルートを矢印で示した模式図である。図3に示すように、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cそれぞれに分配された原料ガスは、一旦集合された後、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11fそれぞれに改めて分配してもよい。図3の構成では、第1乃至第3電解セル11a~11cそれぞれが上流側セルに相当し、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11fそれぞれが下流側セルに相当する。この場合、例えば第1電解セル11aを通過した原料ガスの少なくとも一部は、第4乃至第6電解セル11d~11fの少なくともいずれか1つを通過する。
 [変形例2]
 上記実施形態では、1つの電解セルスタック装置10が上流側セル及び下流側セルの両方を有する場合について説明したが、本発明は、複数の電解セルスタック装置を備える電解セルスタック集合体にも適用可能である。
 図4は、電解セルスタック集合体100内を流れる原料ガスのルートを矢印で示した模式図である。図4に示すように、電解セルスタック集合体100は、第1電解セルスタック装置110と、第2電解セルスタック装置120と、接続配管130とを備える。原料ガスの流れ方向において、第1電解セルスタック装置110は、第2電解セルスタック装置120の上流側に配置される。第1電解セルスタック装置110は、積層された6つの上流側セル111を有する。上流側セル111は、上記実施形態に係る電解セル11と同様の構成を有する。第2電解セルスタック装置120は、積層された6つの下流側セル121を有する。下流側セル121は、上記実施形態に係る電解セル11と同様の構成を有する。第1電解セルスタック装置110と第2電解セルスタック装置120は、接続配管130によって接続されている。
 図4に示すように、第1電解セルスタック装置110を通過した原料ガスは、第2電解セルスタック装置120を通過する。具体的には、第1電解セルスタック装置110内の6つの上流側セル111に分配された原料ガスは、接続配管130において一旦集合された後、第2電解セルスタック装置120内の6つの下流側セル121に改めて分配されている。
 このように、本変形例に係る電解セルスタック集合体100では、第1電解セルスタック装置110を通過した原料ガスが第2電解セルスタック装置120を通過する。そのため、第1電解セルスタック装置110の各上流側セル111において半分の原料ガスを反応させた後、第2電解セルスタック装置120の各下流側セル121において残り半分の原料ガスを反応させればよい。従って、1つの電解セルスタックの各セルにおいて全部の原料ガスを反応させる必要がある場合に比べて、各上流側セル111及び各下流側セル121それぞれにおける原料ガス組成の変化度合いを半分に低減させることができる。その結果、各上流側セル111及び各下流側セル121それぞれの水素極21のうち上流側部分と下流側部分に温度分布が生じることを抑制できる。
 なお、図4では、第1電解セルスタック装置110を通過した原料ガスの全部が第2電解セルスタック装置120を通過する形態を例示したが、これに限られない。例えば、第1電解セルスタック装置110の下流側に2つの第2電解セルスタック装置120が並列に接続されている場合には、第1電解セルスタック装置110を通過した原料ガスの一部(約半分ずつ)が2つの第2電解セルスタック装置120それぞれを通過することになる。
 上記実施形態に説明したように、電解セルスタック集合体100においても、次のように、素子部20の好ましい構成を適用することができる。
 各上流側セル111の電解質22の厚さは、各下流側セル121の電解質22の厚さより厚いことが好ましい。これによって、各上流側セル111の電解質22の内部抵抗が、各下流側セル121の電解質22の内部抵抗より大きくなるため、第1電解セルスタック装置110と第2電解セルスタック装置120の間の温度差を抑制することができる。
 各上流側セル111の水素極21は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の酸化物系材料を含み、かつ、各下流側セル121の水素極21は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の金属系材料を含むことが好ましい。これによって、第1電解セルスタック装置110における電極活性の低下抑制と、第2電解セルスタック装置120における電極活性の向上とを両立させることができる。
 各上流側セル111の水素極21をx軸方向から平面視したときの面積は、各下流側セル121の水素極21をx軸方向から平面視したときの面積より小さいことが好ましい。これによって、各上流側セル111の水素極21における電流密度が、各下流側セル121の水素極21における電流密度より大きくなるため、第1電解セルスタック装置110と第2電解セルスタック装置120の間の温度差を抑制することができる。
 [変形例3]
 上記実施形態では、第1乃至第6電解セル11a~11fそれぞれの空気流路P2に空気が供給されることとしたが、空気流路P2には積極的に空気を供給しなくてもよい。
 [変形例4]
 上記実施形態において、素子部20は、平板型の固体酸化物形電解セルに用いられる周知の素子部であることとしたが、これに限られない。
 例えば、素子部20は、いわゆるメタルサポート型の固体酸化物形電解セルに用いられる周知の素子部であってもよい。メタルサポート型の固体酸化物形電解セルは、素子部20を支持する金属支持板を備える。素子部20の水素極21は、金属支持板の第1主面上に配置される。金属支持板は、第1主面から第2主面まで連通する複数の連通孔を有する。各連通孔は、水素極21に原料ガスを供給するとともに、水素極21において生成された生成ガスを排出する。
 また、素子部20は、いわゆる縦縞型の固体酸化物形電解セルに用いられる周知の素子部であってもよい。縦縞型の固体酸化物形電解セルは、支持基板の一主面に配置された素子部と、支持基板の他主面に配置されたインターコネクタとを備える。縦縞型の固体酸化物形電解セルは、支持基板を貫通する原料ガス流路を有する。

Claims (12)

  1.  上流側セル及び下流側セルを含む複数の電解セルが積層された電解セルスタック装置であって、
     前記上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの少なくとも一部は、前記下流側セルを通過する、
    電解セルスタック装置。
  2.  積層方向に隣り合う前記複数の電解セルすべてが上流下流の関係にあり、
     前記上流側セルを通過した原料ガスの全部が、前記下流側セルを通過する、
    請求項1に記載の電解セルスタック装置。
  3.  前記上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれは、水素極、酸素極及び電解質を有し、
     前記原料ガスは、HOを含む、
    請求項1又は2に記載の電解セルスタック装置。
  4.  前記上流側セルの前記電解質の厚さは、前記下流側セルの前記電解質の厚さより厚い、
    請求項3に記載の電解セルスタック装置。
  5.  前記上流側セルの前記水素極は、電極触媒として機能する導電性の酸化物系材料を含み、

  7.  複数の上流側セルが積層された第1電解セルスタック装置と、
     複数の下流側セルが積層された第2電解セルスタック装置と、
    を備え、
     前記第1電解セルスタック装置を通過した原料ガスの少なくとも一部は、前記第2電解セルスタック装置を通過する、
    電解セルスタック集合体。
  8.  前記第1電解セルスタック装置を通過した原料ガスの全部が、前記第2電解セルスタック装置を通過する、

  9.  前記上流側セル及び下流側セルそれぞれは、水素極、酸素極及び電解質を有し、
