Definitions
- the present invention relates to a catalyst for producing biojet fuel to obtain biojet fuel by reforming biomass-derived bio-oil, and a method for producing biojet fuel using the catalyst for producing biojet fuel.
- biofuels are attracting attention as an alternative to fossil fuels that can achieve carbon neutrality from the perspective of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
- the carbon dioxide released during the combustion of biofuels comes from carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere during the growth process of biomass. Therefore, even when using biofuels, it is possible to achieve carbon neutrality, which is the concept that the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during production and biological activity is the same as the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed.
- Biofuels that can achieve carbon neutrality include bioethanol fuel, biodiesel fuel, and biojet fuel, which have been gaining in popularity in recent years.
- the popularity of biojet fuel has lagged behind that of bioethanol fuel and biodiesel fuel due to strict product standards, among other factors.
- the global aviation industry consumes approximately 1.5 to 1.7 billion barrels (equivalent to 238 to 270 Mm3 ) of regular jet fuel annually, and there is an urgent need to develop high-quality biojet fuel to replace regular jet fuel.
- biojet fuel has been produced from biomass resources by subjecting biomass-derived feedstock oil to hydrodeoxygenation treatment to produce hydrocarbons, which are then isomerized and cracked to produce C7-16 isomerized hydrocarbons that can be used as biojet fuel.
- Patent Document 1 describes a method for producing such biojet fuel, which includes: a) treating a renewable feedstock in a first reaction zone by catalytic hydrogenation and deoxygenation under reaction conditions in the presence of hydrogen to obtain a product stream from the first reaction zone containing hydrogen, water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and a hydrocarbon fraction containing diesel fuel boiling range paraffins and aviation fuel boiling range paraffins; b) selectively separating from the product stream from the first reaction zone in a high temperature, high pressure hydrogen stripper a gas stream containing at least a portion of the hydrogen, water, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide from a remainder stream containing at least paraffins; c) separating the remainder stream into a gas stream containing at least the paraffins;
- a method for producing diesel fuel boiling range products and aviation fuel boiling range products from a renewable feedstock comprising: introducing the branched paraffin-rich stream and the gas stream into a second reaction zone for contact with an isomerization/selective hydrocracking catalyst
- Patent Document 2 discloses a method for producing hydrocarbons, including a first step in which biologically derived oil and hydrogen gas are subjected to conditions sufficient for hydrodeoxygenation in the presence of a hydrodeoxygenation catalyst to produce n-paraffins, and a second step in which the n-paraffins and hydrogen gas are subjected to conditions sufficient for isomerization in the presence of an isomerization catalyst to produce isoparaffins and a separated fraction, and under the atmospheric pressure obtained from the second step to reisomerization, the fraction boiling at 200°C or higher is recycled, and isomerization is performed in the presence of an isomerization catalyst.
- Patent document 3 discloses a method for converting triacylglyceride-containing oil to crude oil precursors and/or distillate hydrocarbon fuels, comprising reacting a mixture of triacylglyceride-containing oil, water, and diatomic hydrogen at a temperature in the range of about 250° C. to about 560° C. and a pressure of greater than about 75 bar to convert at least a portion of the triacylglycerides, recovering a reaction effluent containing water and one or more of isoolefins, isoparaffins, cycloolefins, cycloparaffins, and aromatics; and hydrotreating the reaction effluent to form a hydrotreated effluent.
- Patent Documents 1 and 2 involve two steps: a hydrodeoxygenation process and an isomerization cracking process, which results in problems such as high energy consumption and high costs for producing biojet fuel.
- Patent Document 3 involves hydrothermal treatment of fats and oils under high pressure, such as a pressure of more than about 75 bar, followed by a hydrogenation reaction. This requires facilities that can withstand high pressure and a large amount of hydrogen, resulting in problems such as high energy consumption and high costs for producing biojet fuel.
- Patent Documents 1 and 2 generate by-products such as carbon monoxide and short carbon chain hydrocarbons, which react with hydrogen, resulting in large amounts of hydrogen consumption and high costs.
- the inventors of the present application focused on multifunctional catalysts and came up with the present invention, which is a catalyst that can carry out a biojet fuel production method under low hydrogen pressure with low hydrogen consumption by reacting hydrodeoxygenation, hydroisomerization, and hydrocracking in a single step, and a method for producing biojet fuel using the catalyst.
- the present invention aims to provide a catalyst for producing biojet fuel that can be used in a method for producing biojet fuel that is highly energy-efficient and can easily produce high-quality biojet fuel, and a method for producing biojet fuel using the catalyst.
- the present invention provides a catalyst for producing biojet fuel, which is used in a method for producing biojet fuel by reforming oil derived from biomass containing triacylglycerol, and is characterized in that the catalyst is made by supporting a solid base catalyst on a solid acid catalyst, in which zeolite is used as the solid acid catalyst, an oxide of a Group 2 metal is used as the solid base catalyst, and a precious metal is further supported.
- the catalyst for producing biojet fuel of the present invention can further support tin.
- Platinum can be used as the precious metal supported on the catalyst for producing biojet fuel of the present invention.
- the zeolite which is the solid acid catalyst of the present invention for producing biojet fuel, can be a ZSM-5 type zeolite or a SAPO-11 type zeolite.
- the Group 2 metal oxide used in the catalyst for producing biojet fuel of the present invention can be one or more selected from magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, and barium oxide.
- the biomass-derived oil that is reformed by the catalyst for producing biojet fuel of the present invention can be coconut oil.
- C7-16 isomerized hydrocarbons which are suitable for use as biojet fuel, from oil derived from biomass containing free fatty acids and triacylglycerol.
- FIG. 1 is an explanatory diagram showing a performance test facility for a catalyst for producing a biojet fuel according to the present invention.
- the catalyst for producing biojet fuel in this example is a catalyst for producing biojet fuel in which zeolite, a solid acid catalyst, is supported with a Group 2 metal oxide, which is a solid base catalyst, and further supported with a precious metal.
- the catalyst for producing biojet fuel can also be made to support tin.
- the noble metals that can be supported include gold, platinum, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, palladium, and rhenium, with platinum being preferred.
- Zeolites that can be used as solid acid catalysts include, for example, mordenite, ⁇ zeolite, ZSM-based zeolite, A-type zeolite, X-type zeolite, and Y-type zeolite, with ZSM-5-type zeolite and SAPO-11-type zeolite being preferred.
- the Group 2 metal oxide used as the fixed base catalyst is not particularly limited, but it is preferable to use one or more selected from magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, rubidium oxide, and barium oxide.
- the catalyst is manufactured by dissolving a solid base catalyst precursor in distilled water, impregnating a solid acid catalyst with this, drying it, forming it into pellets, and calcining it to obtain the catalyst.
- a salt of a precious metal is dissolved in distilled water, and in some cases, a tin salt is added, impregnated, and then dried and calcined to obtain the catalyst.
- the manufacturing method of the catalyst is not limited to this method, and it may be manufactured by other methods.
- the oil derived from biomass containing triacylglycerol that is modified by the catalyst for producing biomass jet fuel according to the present invention is not particularly limited, but for a stable supply of oil and easy production, the seeds of plants that contain a lot of fats and oils are preferably used as biomass.
- biomass For example, bintaro, bengowan, porong, jatropha, coconut, palm fruit, date fruit, etc. are suitable.
- coconut is more preferably used because its endosperm contains a large amount of oil.
- the method for producing oil from biomass and it can be produced by oil extraction, heat treatment, etc.
- the reforming of biomass-derived oil is carried out using a reforming treatment device having a reactor, a heating means, and a gas injection means capable of injecting hydrogen gas. It is preferable to use a continuous production device as the reforming treatment device, which can continuously supply the raw material biomass-derived oil and extract the products such as oil and gas after the reforming treatment.
- a pretreatment is performed by hydrogenating and reducing a catalyst for producing biomass jet fuel.
- the method of hydrogenating and reducing is not particularly limited, but it is preferable to perform it at 400°C for about 3 hours under a hydrogen flow rate of 100 ml/min.
- the biomass-derived oil and the catalyst are placed in a reactor of a reforming treatment device, and hydrogen gas is injected at a reaction temperature of 200°C to 450°C to perform a reforming treatment of the biomass-derived oil in which hydrodeoxygenation reaction, hydroisomerization, and hydrocracking are reacted in one step.
- the hydrogen pressure is preferably low, about 0.5 to 3 MPa, and the hydrogen supply amount is performed with a volume ratio of hydrogen to biomass-derived oil of about 100:1 to 1200:1.
- the biojet fuel catalyst of this example described above allows hydrodeoxygenation, hydroisomerization, and hydrocracking to occur in a single step, making it possible to use a biojet fuel production method that uses low hydrogen pressure and consumes less hydrogen compared to conventional biojet fuel production methods.

- the liquid products reformed with the catalyst of Example 5 had slightly lower yields of hydrocarbons ( C7 - C16 ) for biojet fuel and hydrocarbon isomerization rates than the liquid products reformed with the catalysts of Examples 2 to 4, but the feed conversion rate was high, similar to the cases of Examples 2 to 4.
- the use of the catalyst of Example 5 allows hydrodeoxygenation, hydroisomerization, and hydrocracking to occur in a single step, indicating that a method for producing biojet fuel can be suitably performed under extremely low hydrogen pressure and with low hydrogen consumption compared to conventional methods for producing biojet fuel.
