Abstract
Polarization aberration compensator devices, systems and methods for their design and fabrication are described. An example polarization aberration compensator includes a substrate, and one or more sets of layers positioned on the substrate. Each of the one or more sets of layers is spatially divided into multiple sections, and each of the sections is configured to impart a different amount diattenuation or retardance compared to another one of the sections to form a spatially varying polarization correction configuration across the polarization aberration compensator. Additionally, the amount diattenuation or retardance imparted by each of the sections is customized based on polarization characteristics of a corresponding optical system to eliminate or reduce polarization aberrations over, for example, the exit pupil of the optical system.
