Abstract

This invention relates to a security system (1) and method more particularly a security system (1) and method which makes use of a drone (2) placed on a protectable asset. The security system comprises a vehicle (3) such as a cash-in-transit vehicle (3) with a drone (2) secured to the vehicle (3) by a securing means (4) such as a docking station. An activation means for launching the drone (2) is provided in response to a launch signal or emergency situation such as a hijacking. The drone (2) has a tracking means such as a digital camera and an artificial intelligence module for identifying and tracking a target (6) such as a robber's vehicle (5) or a hijacked vehicle after it is launched to relay information relating to a target (6) to a remote point.

Description

SECURITY SYSTEM AND METHOD
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a security system and method more particularly a security system and method which makes use of a drone placed on a protectable asset.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
The hijacking or theft of truck carrying goods are a common occurrence. Once a truck is hijacked, the hijackers have very little time to hide the truck or to drive it to a remote area where it is hard to find. Part of this process may involve looking for tracking components, such as GPS or other wireless devices and then destroying and or disabling the devices.
As known in the art, drones or unmanned aerial vehicles can be used to assist with surveillance in conjunction with security systems. An article found on

describes how police can use drones to find or follow people in certain scenarios, like filming setup drug deals, following burglary suspects on the run, or tracking down a suspect mired in a swamp. Some drones are now equipped with on-board sensors that can automatically follow a moving person or a vehicle, albeit under very limited conditions (and for a short period of time).

International patent application number PCT/US2016/022205 entitled AUTOMATED DRONE SYSTEMS in the name of Nightingale Intelligent Systems (“Nightingale”) describes an automated drone security system for surveilling a location includes one or more drones with onboard sensors and an imaging device for measuring surveillance data. The surveillance data may include images, telemetry data, infrared data, or other detectable information of the location. Drones may be capable of executing one or multiple flight operations as well as storing and transmitting the surveillance data to a server assembly operable for coordinating the drone and receiving the surveillance data. A drone dock may be included for drone launching, landing, and/or storing the drones. A user computing device may be in communication with the server assembly and the drone(s), the user computing device being capable of receiving user input and displaying surveillance data from the drone. Flight operations associated with surveilling the location may be automatically and/or manually controlled by the user computing device and/or or the server assembly in connection with the location.
It is also known in the art that car manufacturer Land Rover has created a special Discovery with a roof-mounted drone which the Red Cross plans to use to transmit live footage from the drone to help respond quickly to landslides, earthquakes, floods, and avalanches as described in an article

The prior art describes using drones to survey property or flying predetermined routes or drones used in conjunction with a car to assist in search and rescue situations. It does, however, not describe using a drone in an emergency situation on movable property to relay current information relating to the movable property.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of this invention to provide a security system and method which, at least partially, alleviates some of the above-mentioned difficulties.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with this invention there is provided for a security system comprising a vehicle with drone securing means and a drone secured to the vehicle by the securing means; activation means for launching the drone in response to a launch signal; the drone having tracking means for tracking an object after it is launched.
The security system wherein the object may be another vehicle, a human or any other target. The security system wherein the drone may be an unmanned arial vehicle (“UAV”) and can be remote controlled or be autonomous to be able to continue to fly and move around on its own.
The security system wherein the drone may be battery powered, however any other means for powering the drone, such as photovoltaic cells or any other fuel-based engines may be used, the invention is not limited in this regard.
The security system wherein the vehicle may be any type of vehicle such as a cargo truck, cash-in-transit truck, motorcar, etc.
The security system wherein the launch signal may be in response to an emergency, an alarm, a remote request, a panic situation, etc.
The security system wherein the drone, whilst following the object, may relay information to a remote point.
The security system wherein the information may be location information, information derived from the object, photographs or video etc. The invention is not limited in this regard and any other desired information may be relayed. The security system wherein the information may be relayed by a wireless system such as a mobile/GSM network, radio waves or any other electromagnetic wave.
The security system wherein the tracking means may be autonomous and make use of artificial intelligence to automatically select the object to follow.
The security system wherein the drone may be weaponised with any defensive or attack weapons such as pepper spray, explosives, a gun etc.
The invention further provides for a tracking method including the steps of launching a drone from a vehicle in response to a specific occurrence, identifying a target with the drone’s target identification means, allowing the drone to follow the target.
The method further including the step of transmitting information relating to the target.
The method including the step of the target being another vehicle, a human or any other object.
The method including the step of the drone being an unmanned arial vehicle (“UAV”) which may be remote controlled or be autonomous to be able to continue to fly and move around on its own. The invention further provides for a security system comprising a drone associated with a protectable asset and at a specific occurrence the drone lifts off of the protectable asset, identifies a target and follows the target.
The security system wherein the protectable asset may be any type of vehicle such as a cargo truck, cash-in-transit truck, or any other asset such as a building, piece of land or any other support structure found on an asset.
The security system wherein the specific occurrence may include a launch signal, an emergency, an alarm, a remote request, a panic situation, etc.
The security system wherein the target may include the protectable asset, a cause for emergency or alarm, a person or third party or any other asset or vehicle. The security system wherein the drone, whilst following the target, may relay information to a remote point.
These and other features of the invention are described in more detail below.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Embodiments of the invention are described below, by way of example only, with reference to the drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a security system and method as used on a truck;
Figure 2 shows the security system and method of figure 1 after a drone is launched;
Figure 3 shows the security system and method as part of a cash-in-transit security system; and
Figure 4 shows the security system and method as part of another protectable asset such as a farm or piece of land. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
With reference to the drawings, a security system is generally depicted by reference numeral 1 .
The security system and method is used to protect a vehicle such as a truck 3 with has a drone securing means 4 attached thereto. A drone 2 is secured to the truck 3 by the securing means 4.
The drone 2 is a battery powered autonomous unmanned arial vehicle (“UAV”).
The securing means 4 used to secure the drone 2 to the vehicle 3 is a protective container which is configured to protect the drone 2 against the elements, damage and/or theft. The protective container is also configured to be a docking and charging station to ensure that the battery of the drone 2 remains charged.
In an emergency situation, such as a hijacking of the truck 3 an alarm or panic signal is triggered and the protective container will open up to allow for the drone 2 to lift off of the truck 3.
The drone 2 will then make use of artificial intelligence to identify the truck 3 as a target and then proceed to follow the target at a safe distance. The drone 2 is equipped with a communication means and whilst following the target, will communicate information to a remote point via electromagnetic signals such as a mobile network. Cameras, GPS modules, microphones etc. will ensure that as much information as possible is communicated.
Information relating to location information, information derived from the target, photographs or video etc. is relayed to insure that as much information as possible is communicated. This information is then used by the owner of the truck 3, police or other authorities to locate, and retrieve the stolen truck 3.
As shown in figure 3, where a truck 3 is destroyed or damaged and the goods inside are stolen, as common in a cash-in-transit heist, the drone 2 may identify something other than the truck 3 such as a getaway car 5 as a target 6 to follow.
The drone will then follow the getaway car 5 and relay information regarding the new target 6 and abandon the damaged or destroyed truck 3.
The invention is not limited to using the drone 2 to protect vehicles. As seen in figure 4, the drone 2 may be placed on a pedestal or some sort of support structure 7 in an open area, such as a field or camp for animals 8. Poachers and livestock thieves gain access to a fenced-off area by cutting fence 9 wires or jumping over the fence. If an alert is received that the fence 9 is cut or that a motion detector detects unusual movement in the camp 8 the drone 2 is launched. The drone 2 makes use of for instance a heat signature camera to scan the area where the perimeter was breached. If an intruder is found the drone 2 will identify the intruder as a target 6 and follow the intruder, be it a vehicle, human or animal.
In another embodiment, the drone may be weaponized to protect itself from harm, to attack a target by means of a gun/canon or to be used to shoot other objects.
The drone does not have to be autonomous and a user may at any time take control or send other commands to the drone.
The drone may also be used in animal/medical emergencies to identify, follow and shoot tranquilizer darts at injured animals. The drone can then relay location information of the tranquilized animal so that a veterinarian can assist the animal in a shorter amount of time.
There is further provided for the drone to carry a siren, light or beacon to assist in tracking it down. A reservoir with a marking substance may mark any object, area or animal which may assist in tracking.
In the case where a bush fire is detected on a remote part of a farm or field the drone, fitted with a flame thrower, may be activated to launch and fly into a dangerous area to create a backburn. In remote areas the flame thrower may be used to clear debris swept up by wind and caught on high tension cables to eliminate any problems before they may arise. In another embodiment the owner of the vehicle may also send a signal to the drone to launch if the need arises to inspect the vehicle. Fuel tankers are at risk of having the fuel stolen whilst moving, especially if the driver is part of the theft. If the owner suspects that such a situation arose, a launch signal may be sent remotely to the drone to launch and relay information such as video to the owner.
It is in envisaged that incorporating the concept described herein will form part of all future large vehicle security systems.
This should have a significant improvement on the current security systems as GPS modules which assist in tracking trucks are removable or may be destroyed easily.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the precise details as described herein.

Claims

1 . A security system comprising a vehicle with drone securing means and a drone secured to the vehicle by the securing means; activation means for launching the drone in response to a launch signal; the drone having tracking means for tracking an object after it is launched.
2. The security system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the object is another vehicle.
3. The security system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the object is another vehicle a human.
4. The security system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the object is another vehicle another target.
5. The security system as claimed in claim in any one of claim 1 to claim 4 wherein the drone is an unmanned arial vehicle which is remote controlled.
6. The security system as claimed in claim in any one of claim 1 to claim 4 wherein the drone is an unmanned arial vehicle which is autonomous. The security system as claimed in claim in any one of claim 1 to claim 6 wherein the drone is battery powered. The security system as claimed in claim in any one of claim 1 to claim 6 wherein the drone is powered by a photovoltaic cell. The security system as claimed in claim in any one of claim 1 to claim 6 wherein the drone is powered or a fuel-based engine. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein vehicle is any one of the following list: a cargo truck, a cash-in- transit truck, a motorcar, a motorised vehicle. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein the launch signal is in response to an emergency situation. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein drone, whilst following the object, relays information to a remote point. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein the type of information is any one or more of the following list: location information, information derived from the object, photographs or video etc.
14. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein wireless communication system.
15. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein the tracking means is autonomous and makes use of artificial intelligence to automatically select the object to follow.
16. The security system as claimed in claim in any of the preceding claims wherein the drone is weaponised.
17. A tracking method including the steps of launching a drone from a vehicle in response to a specific occurrence, identifying a target with the drone’s target identification means, allowing the drone to follow the target.
18. The tracking method of claim 17 including the step of transmitting information relating to the target.
19. The tracking method of claim 17 or claim 18 including the step of the target being another vehicle.
20. The tracking method of claim 17 or claim 18 including the step of the target being a human.
21. The tracking method of claim 17 or claim 18 including the step of the target being or an object. 22. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 21 including the step of the drone being an unmanned arial vehicle which is remote controlled.
23. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 21 including the step of the drone being an unmanned arial vehicle which is autonomous.
24. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 23 including the step of the drone being battery powered.
25. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 23 including the step of the drone being powered by a photovoltaic cell.
26. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 23 including the step of the drone being powered by a fuel-based engine.
27. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 26 including the step of the vehicle being any type of motorised vehicle.
28. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 26 including the step of the vehicle being a vehicle transporting precious cargo.
29. The tracking method of any one of claim 17 to claim 28 including the step of the drone being weaponised. The invention further provides for a security system comprising a drone associated with a protectable asset and at a specific occurrence the drone lifts off of the protectable asset, identifies a target and follows the target. The security system of claim 30 wherein the protectable asset is a vehicle. The security system of claim 30 wherein the protectable asset is an asset. The security system of claim 30 wherein the protectable asset is an immovable property. The security system of claim 30 wherein the protectable asset is a support structure found on an asset. The security system of any one of claims 30 to 34 wherein the specific occurrence is an emergency situation. The security system of any one of claims 30 to 34 wherein the specific occurrence is a remote request. The security system of any one of claims 30 to 36 wherein the target is the protectable asset. The security system of any one of claims 30 to 36 wherein the target is a cause for emergency or alarm, The security system of any one of claims 30 to 36 wherein the target is a person. The security system of any one of claims 30 to 39 wherein the drone, whilst following the target, relays information to a remote point.
