Definitions
- This invention belongs to the field of the optical solutions for projecting light emitted by light sources of automotive luminous device outside said luminous devices.
- Automotive lighting market can be considered one of the most competitive ones and new lighting functions are constantly required.
- the arrangement of more than one substrate may be advisable, since a high amount of controlled light sources is needed, or because of size or geometry.
- larger substrates are usually more expensive than the equivalent combination of shorter ones.
- electrical connection and mechanical continuity of two adjacent substrates issues some problems that need to be solved.
- the present invention provides a solution for this problem by means of an automotive luminous device for a signalling and/or for a lighting function, the automotive luminous device comprising
- a two-layer printed circuit board comprising one layer at each side of the board, is an advantageous embodiment for the first and second substrate, since they are less expensive than other boards comprising a more complex architecture.
- the third substrate comprises at least four layers.
- This type of substrates are used when a powerful driver is used to control the light sources.
- the driver is configured to control the light source arrays so as to display an animated lighting pattern.
- a driver which is installed in a four-layer substrate is able to create complex patterns, such as animations, in the controlled light sources.
- Sequential animations such as a running light which runs along the length of the rear part of the vehicle with sweeping motion, is an example of pattern to which this invention may be applied.
- the light sources are intended to contribute to two different regulatory-lighting functions, such as position light and turning indicator or such as daytime running light and turning indicator.
- regulatory-light functions are especially indicated for the present invention.
- Current car manufacturers usually design automotive rear luminous functions with an idea of coast-to-coast lighting or signalling. If these luminous functions are intended to be provided with animation or complex patterns, this is only possible with a big amount of light sources and a complex control management.
- the regulatory-lighting functions are defined and regulated by national or international associations, such as, e.g., the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), which create some standards that should be met by the car manufacturers.
- UNECE United Nations Economic Commission for Europe
- the automotive luminous device further comprises
- the present invention may be used with more than two main substrates without any major problem.
- a coast-to-coast function may be a Position Light or a Daytime Running Lamp extending across the front of the vehicle.
- a position light across the rear of the vehicle Said functions are controlled by a driver, which is usually located under the corresponding lamp.
- the automotive luminous device further comprises
- An auxiliary arrangement is useful for extending the architecture to other parts of the vehicle, which are in contact with the main arrangement.
- the electric contacts are soldered. In a preferred embodiment, the electric contacts are soldered in a surface mounting process.
- SMD Surface mounted devices
- the driver is a DC/DC driver which is configured to manage a maximum current value of more than 0.5 A, and particularly comprised between 2 and 3 A.
- each substrate is a printed circuit board, and comprises more than 50 light emitting diodes.
- the light source arrays are intended to provide a way of displaying a lighting pattern.
- the car manufacturers design complex animated patterns, which require a big amount of individual light sources to be achieved.
- a high amount of LEDs is advantageous since it enables the use of complex animation patterns.
- the invention is also adapted to work with a far lower number of LEDs, such as 5 LEDs.
- the automotive luminous device further comprises a wire harness, which provides electric supply to the driver.
- a long wire harness connected to the third substrate is enough to provide electric supply to the whole set of light sources.
- electromagnetic issues are reduced by having a single point of electric arrival.
- shielding is reduced or not necessary, thus reducing the manufacturing cost and improving the security of the device.
- the automotive luminous device further comprises an optical part, configured to project the light emitted by the light source arrays to the exterior of the automotive luminous device.
- the light source arrays comprise solid-state light sources.
- solid state refers to light emitted by solid-state electroluminescence, which uses semiconductors to convert electricity into light. Compared to incandescent lighting, solid state lighting creates visible light with reduced heat generation and less energy dissipation.
- the typically small mass of a solid-state electronic lighting device provides for greater resistance to shock and vibration compared to brittle glass tubes/bulbs and long, thin filament wires. They also eliminate filament evaporation, potentially increasing the lifespan of the illumination device.
- Some examples of these types of lighting comprise semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs), organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), or polymer light-emitting diodes (PLED) as sources of illumination rather than electrical filaments, plasma or gas.
- the light source array comprises from 1 to 100 rows and/or from 1 to 100 columns.
- a matrix array is a typical example for these light modules.
- the rows may be grouped in projecting distance ranges and each column of each group represent an angle interval. This angle value depends on the resolution of the matrix arrangement, which is typically comprised between 0.01o per column and 0.5o per column. As a consequence, many light sources may be managed at the same time.
- the arrays may have any shape, since the shape is defined by the car manufacturer, and this invention may be embodied in a great amount of shapes. Further, the same light array there may be light sources with different colours (some amber light sources and some white light sources, for example, or some amber light sources and some red light sources). The car manufacturer and the current light regulation may recommend the use of a different option.
- the substrates are preferably rigid substrates, for instance FR4 substrates or IMS substrates, as opposed to flexible PCBs known in the art. Such substrates are less costly to produce and assemble. In particular, it is preferred that the substrate is of the FR4, FR5 or FR6 types, which are less costly than IMS.
- top surface area of a given substrate it is meant the surface area of the substrate in a plane section along a top layer of the substrate, usually a layer onto which light sources are mounted.
- the third substrate has a higher number of layers. Said higher number of layers allows for complex routing, required for supplying power to large arrays of LEDs, while keeping a low bulk. Meanwhile, in the first and second substrates, a lower number of layers is needed, so that the cost of these larger substrates is kept down.
- the substrates assembly is thus particularly well suited for use in a lighting device covering a large portion of the width of the vehicle, in particular in a coast-to-coast lighting device wherein the lighting device extends along the whole width of the vehicle, or almost the whole width.
- the lighting module further comprises an optical element, such as a light filter or a collimator, adapted to receive the light emitted by the solid-state light source and project it outside the lighting module.
- an optical element such as a light filter or a collimator
- the invention provides an automotive vehicle comprising a trunk door and comprising an automotive luminous device according to the first inventive aspect installed in the trunk door.
- FIG. 1 shows some parts of a first embodiment of a luminous device according to the invention.
- FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of a luminous device according to the invention, installed in an automotive vehicle.
- FIG. 1 shows some parts of a first embodiment of a luminous device according to the invention.
- the device comprises a first printed circuit board 1.
- This printed circuit board comprises two layers, each layer comprising an electronic circuit. This type of printed circuit boards are common in automotive manufacturing.
- the upper layer comprises a first electric contract zone 6 and the printed circuit board assembly comprises more than 100 LEDs 4.
- the device also comprises a second printed circuit board 2, similar to the first one.
- the upper layer comprises a second electric contact zone 7 and the printed circuit board comprises more than 100 LEDs 5.
- This printed circuit board is a four-layer PCB, and comprises a driver 8, which is intended to control the operation of the LEDs 4, 5. To do so, this third printed circuit board 3 is electrically connected to the first printed circuit board 1 and to the second printed circuit board 2. To establish this contact, the third printed circuit board 3 has a first pad 9 which is connected to the first electric contact zone 6 by surface mounting and a second pad 10 which is connected to the second electric contact zone 7 by surface mounting.
- the surface mounting process consists of depositing a solder paste 11 between the pads to be connected, and then applying heat to melt this solder paste 11 and create the electric contact. This is a quick and unexpensive process, and saves time and cost compared to other joints, like ribbon mounting.
- the lighting functionality is performed by three main printed circuit boards, thus adding an additional base printed circuit board 17, which comprises a plurality of LEDs, and an additional driver printed circuit board 12, which is a four-layer printed circuit board which comprises a secondary driver 13.
- This embodiment is particularly advantageous when the animation needs more than one driver, either due to a high number of involved LEDs or due to a high current value or a complex pattern.
- the arrangement of may be extended to more than two printed circuit boards, coupled two by two by some four-layer printed circuit boards comprising a driver, as seen in this .
- the device further comprises two auxiliary printed circuit boards 14, one at each side of the main arrangement shown in Figures 1 and 2.
- auxiliary printed circuit boards 14 are intended to provide the same luminous functionality as the main arrangement, but in different locations of the automotive vehicle.
- each auxiliary printed circuit board 14 there is an auxiliary driver printed circuit board 15, which comprises a secondary driver 16, which is configured to control the light sources of the auxiliary printed circuit board 14.
- This arrangement is complementary to the ones shown in Figures 1 and 2, and are useful when the light functions are to be achieved on the vehicle. However, this arrangement may perform, on its own, a regulatory-lighting function, such as turn indicator.
- FIG. 1 shows an embodiment of a luminous device 20 according to the invention, installed in an automotive vehicle 100.
- both arrangements are observed: a primary arrangement “coast-to-coast” of a tail and stop luminous functionality and a secondary arrangement, which extends in the lateral side of the vehicle. These two arrangements are combined to provide a suitable presentation of the tail functionality.
