Definitions
- the present invention relates to a high-power laser beam transmission device using an index matching fluid, and in particular, an index matching fluid having a refractive index similar to that of an optical fiber is disposed at the end of an optical fiber to minimize return loss of a high-power laser beam. It relates to a high-power laser beam transmission device using a fluid.
- a high-power laser beam transmission device that generates a high-energy laser beam is widely used in various fields, and research is being actively conducted.
- a laser beam of high energy is transmitted to an optical fiber, the optical fiber is easily damaged due to high instantaneous power.
- Optical fiber damage is mainly caused by high instantaneous power at the entrance and exit surfaces, and is a major cause of deterioration of transmission efficiency along with Fresnel reflection.
- the damage limit of silica-based optical fiber is generally known as a power density of 1 GW/cm 2 . Since the diameter of a general large-diameter optical fiber is 1 mm, when converted into units, about 10 MW becomes an average of 1 GW/cm 2 or more on the surface of the optical fiber, making it impossible to transmit, and about 0.08 J per pulse may be the limit. Even these calculations are made under the assumption that the laser beam is uniform and constructive interference of the laser beam does not occur, so in practice, a laser with much lower energy per pulse or a larger diameter fiber should be used.
- FIG. 1 is a conceptual diagram of a high-power laser beam transmission device including a conventional beam homogenizer.
- a conventional beam homogenizer that transmits a uniform laser beam to an optical fiber, constructive interference by the beam homogenizer occurs, resulting in stochastic damage even within the damage limit range. do. That is, a fine pattern is generated due to constructive interference.
- FIG 2 is an exemplary view of a cross section of an optical fiber cut.
- the cut cross section of the optical fiber is not uniform, so when a laser beam is incident or emitted in contact with air, the shape and direction of the laser beam may be distorted and reflection loss may be large.
- a uniform surface is created through polishing and coating to prevent distortion of the laser beam and minimize reflection loss, but the cost of polishing and coating the optical fiber is very high, and management is required to prevent dust or other foreign substances In the event of damage, there are problems that cannot be addressed immediately on site.
- the reflectance When light is transmitted and the medium is changed, the reflectance may change according to the difference in refractive index between the mediums.
- a laser When a laser is transmitted through an optical fiber in air, a large amount of energy is lost due to a difference in refractive index between the medium at the incident surface and the exit surface.
- the refractive index of air is 1.00 and the refractive index of silica fiber is 1.46, and the normal angle of incidence is limited, the following reflectance formula is applied.
- the reflectance is 3.6%
- the transmittance is 96.4%
- the transmission efficiency of a single optical fiber is 92.9% when applied to the incident surface and the exit surface, respectively.
- Korea Patent Registration No. 10-2162642 (Lens-integrated optical transmission optical fiber and its manufacturing method) discloses that a lens is integrally installed in a holder for fixing an optical fiber that transmits external light or the distal end of the optical fiber is twisted with each other. And, it only discloses a technology for curing the cured part in a liquid state to become a solid state.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a high-power laser beam transmission device using an index matching fluid that minimizes return loss by arranging the index matching fluid at the end of an optical fiber.
- a high-power laser beam transmission device using an index matching fluid includes an optical fiber that transmits a laser beam, and an index matching fluid disposed at both ends of the optical fiber and emitting a laser beam incident from the optical fiber. fluid).
- the index matching fluid may be a liquid having the same refractive index as the optical fiber.
- An anti-reflection coating window disposed on a side surface of the index matching fluid in a direction in which a laser beam is emitted is further included.
- a lens disposed on a side of the index matching fluid in a direction in which a laser beam is emitted is further included.
- a camera for aligning the focal position of the incident laser beam and the optical fiber is further included.
- index matching fluid having the same or similar refractive index to the optical fiber is disposed at both ends of the optical fiber to minimize return loss.
- both ends of the optical fiber do not need to be polished or treated separately, resulting in cost savings. It can be replaced right on the spot.

- the index matching fluids 100 and 100a are disposed at both ends of the optical fiber 200 so that both ends of the optical fiber come into contact with the index matching fluid without being exposed to air.
- the laser beam 300 emitted from both ends of the optical fiber 200 may pass through the index matching fluid and the anti-reflection coating window and be emitted. That is, the index matching fluids 100 and 100a may be arranged to cover the entire incident and exit surfaces of the optical fiber.
- the index matching fluid 100 may be a liquid having the same or similar refractive index as the optical fiber, and the index matching fluid 100 may be water, but is not limited thereto.
- the refractive index of the index matching fluid 100 may be in the range of 1.3 to 1.8.

- the camera 400 may photograph the incident surface of the optical fiber when replacing the optical fiber, and monitor and adjust the direction of the laser beam based on the photographed image. That is, the camera 400 may photograph the incident surface in order to align the focal position of the laser beam and the optical fiber.

- the index matching fluid 100 and the anti-reflection coating window 110 are placed in contact with each other.
- the index matching fluid and the antireflection coated window have different horizontal widths, but the same height.
- the laser beam diameter can be calculated through a direct contact between the index matching fluid 100 and the anti-reflection coating window 110 . That is, when the laser beam diameter is variable or when the amount of index matching fluid is to be minimized, the anti-reflection coating window 110 can be disposed and utilized. Considering the damage limit of the anti-reflection coating window 110, it should be arranged so that there is more than a certain distance from the optical fiber 200. Since the anti-reflective coating window 110 is closer to the optical fiber 120 than the lens, the possibility of damage to the anti-reflective coating window 110 is high, so only the anti-reflective coating window 110 is considered, and the laser beam diameter can be calculated by the following formula. .
