Sanitizer compositions reduce the risk, exposure and spread of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. The sanitizer composition is configured to sanitize hands and food products such as vegetables, fruit and meat. Most conventional sanitizers are alcohol-based compositions, which after a prolonged usage tend to dry the skin surface resulting in the appearance of flakes and cracks in the skin. Further, conventional sanitizers for food products form a residue on the food product, which if not washed properly can stay on the food product thereby leading to undesirable health issues.
The present disclosure provides a sanitizer composition which may comprise: a. 5 mass% to 50 mass% of an electrolyzed water consisting of: · a free residual chlorine in an amount in the range of 50 ppm to 500 ppm; and

In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the sanitizer composition comprises: a. 10 mass% to 40 mass% of electrolyzed water consisting of:
• a free residual chlorine in an amount in the range of 100 ppm to 400 ppm; and
• sodium chloride in an amount in the range of 600 ppm to 6000 ppm; b. 0 mass% to 10 mass% of at least one additive; and c. q.s. water; wherein the mass % of the components is with respect to the total mass of the sanitizer composition.
In accordance with the present disclosure, the free residual chlorine is sourced from sodium hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid present in electrolyzed water. The sodium hypochlorite is present in an amount in the range of 45 ppm to 500 ppm and the hypochlorous acid is present in an amount in the range of 3 ppm to 40 ppm.
The sanitizer composition may have a pH in the range of 8 to 8.5. In an exemplary embodiment, the pH of the sanitizer composition is 8.3. The pH in the range of 8 to 8.5 makes the sanitizer composition suitable for sanitizing hands and does not cause irritation to the skin and also makes the sanitizer composition safe for use on food products.
The additive is selected from a stabilizer, a thickener, a defoamer, perfumes, a color and a combination thereof. The stabilizer can be selected from the group consisting of sodium hydroxide, diphosphonic acid and its derivatives, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA), phenacetin, p- Hydroxybenzoic acid methyl ester and a combination thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the stabilizer is sodium hydroxide.
The derivative of diphosphonic acid can be selected from diphosphonic (1-hydroxyethylene) disodium acid and 1-Hydroxyethylene- 1,1 -diphosphonic acid. The thickener can be selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid copolymers, methacrylic acid copolymers, vinyl polymers, polycarboxylic acids, polyimines, polyamides, polyethers, carboxymethylcelluloses, cellulose ethers, xanthans, guar flour, locust bean gum, Carbopol Ultrez 10 (a cross-linked acrylic acid polymer), carboxyvinyl polymer or hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose and a combination thereof.

The perfume can be selected from the group consisting of esters, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, and an essential oil extracted from lemon, pine, green apple, citrus, eucalyptus, lavender and neem. The color can be selected from an organic color and a biodegradable color. In an embodiment, the color is selected from the group consisting of aniline dyes and acridine dyes.
Both aniline and acridine dyes are bacteriostatic in high dilution but have low bactericidal action. Aniline dyes are more active against Gram positive bacteria than Gram negative bacteria whereas acridine dyes are more active against Gram positive bacteria than Gram negative bacteria, and available in gentian violet and brilliant green color.
The aniline dye can be selected from the group consisting of crystal violet, brilliant green and malachite green colours.
The acridine dye can be selected from the group consisting of acriflavine, euflavine, proflavine and aminacrine. Colour can be added to the sanitizer composition to enhance user experience. The colours are selected such that they do not affect the efficacy of the electrolyzed water.
Other additives such as stain removers, viscosity enhancers, and rheology modifiers can be further added to the sanitizer composition to improve the properties of the sanitizer composition. The sanitizer composition of the present disclosure can be in a form selected from hand sanitizer, hand rub and skin care formulation.
In an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, the sanitizer composition comprises 40 mass% of the electrolyzed water consisting of 400 ppm of the free residual chlorine and 5400 ppm of sodium chloride; and 60 mass % of tap water, wherein the mass % of the components is with respect to the total mass of the sanitizer composition. The free residual chlorine is sourced from sodium hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid present in the electrolyzed water in an amount of 390 ppm and 30 ppm respectively.
In another exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, the sanitizer composition comprises 10 mass% of the electrolyzed water consisting of 100 ppm of the free residual chlorine and 1350 ppm of sodium chloride; and 90 mass % of tap water, wherein the mass % of the components is with respect to the total mass of the sanitizer composition. The free residual chlorine is sourced from sodium hypochlorite and hypochlorous acid present in the electrolyzed water in an amount of 49 ppm and 4 ppm respectively.
The electrolyzed water can be obtained by electrolyzing a brine solution.
The electrolyzed water can be produced by a process of electrolyzing brine having a controlled concentration and dilution, which ensures elimination of production of highly reactive and toxic by-products.
The conventional sanitizers tend to leave behind certain toxic residues on the skin such as methanol, propanol, benzene, acetaldehyde, and the like. However, the sanitizer composition of the present disclosure does not leave behind any toxic residues on the skin.
Chlorinated water is highly efficient as disinfectant where bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microbes are killed. Since, the amount of concentration of the residual chlorine in the electrolyzed water can be controlled during the process of electrolysis itself, the chemical constitution of the sanitizer composition, of the present disclosure, can be varied as per the application.
The foregoing description of the embodiments has been provided for purposes of illustration and not intended to limit the scope of the present disclosure. Individual components of a particular embodiment are generally not limited to that particular embodiment, but, are interchangeable. Such variations are not to be regarded as a departure from the present disclosure, and all such modifications are considered to be within the scope of the present disclosure.
The present disclosure is further described in light of the following experiments which are set forth for illustration purpose only and not to be construed for limiting the scope of the disclosure.
