Description

Insect control product
The present invention relates to an insect control product, to a method for producing the insect control product, to a method for controlling flying insects, and to a use of the insect control product to control flying insects.
Background
Pyrethrins refers to a group of closely related esters extracted from the Pyrethrum flower (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium). These compounds are effective pesticides. Pyrethroids are any of several synthetic compounds chemically related to pyrethrin, having insecticidal activity. For example, permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid useful for killing adult mosquitoes.
Pyrethroids tend to have a relatively low degree of toxicity to humans and animals and hence are desirable to use for pest control.
Aerosol formulations containing pyrethroids have the added desirability of effectively delivering small amounts of active ingredient due to the dispersion of the active ingredient and penetrating nature of an aerosol spray.
However, aerosols do not allow for the continuous release of active ingredients.
One way of releasing active ingredients continuously or semi-continuously during a certain period of time is by providing a composition in a container attached to an emanation device, as described in patent application WO 2013/144596 A1. However, the operation of such an emanation device requires electric energy and it can be a problem in, for example, rural areas.
Another way of releasing active ingredients is in the form of coils or sticks being formed from a combustible material which is shaped into a circular helix or rod, respectively. Included in the combustible material are one or more active ingredients. In general, mosquito coils and sticks comprise a coil or a substrate, respectively, impregnated with an active ingredient. The substrate is a material which can be ignited and will slowly burn. As the product burns, the active ingredients are emanated into the atmosphere by virtue of their volatility to repel and/or knock-down mosquitoes. In use, such coils and sticks will provide an effective level of the active ingredient in the atmosphere for an appropriate period of time. Typically, a coil is placed on a stand and burns over a period of two or more hours. Sticks are placed vertically in a holder which may be as simple as a bowl of sand. It is recognised that, while the use of volatile pyrethroids results in bite inhibition and possibly even temporary knockdown, the effect is not long lasting. This is mentioned in WO 2005/051078.
Current coils or sticks provide protection as long as they burn and their effect is not seen immediately, which means that people need to wait, for example 30 minutes before the coils or sticks start to repel and/or knock-down insects. Therefore, there is a need of an insect control product that provides protection, i.e. repels and/or knock-down insects, preferably flying insects, as soon as they are ignited, during the burning time and after they are not burning anymore.
The insect control product should be able to provide protection for example, during 4 hours after it has been ignited, meaning that it should provide protection during the whole night.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an insect control product comprising a support and a coating. This product repels and/or knocks-down insects, as soon as it is ignited, during its burning time and after it is not burning anymore. The protection it provides is of for example, at least 4 hours.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing an insect control product.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for controlling flying insects.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a use of an insect control product to control flying insects.

Examples
Formulations
A comparative product is a coil comprising 0.1 wt.% of esbiothrin.
Formulations according to the invention were prepared by mixing all ingredients to obtain an extrudable masala having about 44.44 wt.% water, based on the total weight of the masala. A bamboo stick (i.e. a support) was subsequently coated with the masala using an extruder. The coated stick was dried in a drier at a temperature of less than 45 °C and a relative humidity of between 38 and 44 until the stick had a water content of equal or less than 15 wt.% based on the total weight of the coated stick. It will be understood that the obtained product is in the form of an incense stick. The weight of ach incense stick is between 1.8 g and 2.4 g. The general composition of an insecticide product according to the present disclosure is shown in Table 1.
Table 1. Base insecticide product
Figure imgf000014_0001
Five insecticide products were prepared considering the base insecticide product of Table 1. These insecticide products differ on the amount and type of active, and these are shown in table 2.

Performance tests Landing and probing experiments - mosquitoes The insect control products shown in Table 2 and the comparative product (coil comprising 0.1 wt.% esbiothrin) were tested in a 20m3 chamber to demonstrate their efficacy in inhibiting landing and probing of Culex mosquitoes (% Landing and probing - %LP).
In this case, the insect control product to be tested was ignited until the product began to turn into ash at the burning end. The flame was then fanned, leaving the product to smoulder. The total burning time was recorded. In addition, the %KD was measured. The %LP together with the %KD were determined after 30 minutes of having ignited the product (0 hour). This means that, for 30 minutes immediately after having ignited the product, the mosquitos were exposed to the vapours emanating from the insecticide product. At 30 minutes the %LP and %KD were determined.
After 1.5 hours of having ignited the product a new population of mosquitoes was introduced into the chamber; and the %LP and %KD were determined at 2 hours from the moment of ignition. This means that the mosquitoes were exposed to the (remaining) actives in the air for 30 minutes. New mosquitoes’ populations were introduced into the chamber after 3.5 hours of having ignited the product and the %LP and %KD were determined at 4 hours from the moment of ignition. The same was done at 5.5 hours (parameters at 6 hours) and at 7.5 hours (parameters at 8 hors). The results of these tests are shown in Table 4.
Table 4. Performance tests - Landing and probing - Kock-down
Figure imgf000015_0001
In table 4, 1.5 sticks of insect control product 5 was used in the tests. For the rest of the products only one stick or coil was used.
The results in table 4 show that insect control products according to the invention start working even during the first 30 minutes of having been ignited. This is not the case for the comparative product. Furthermore, the insect control products according to the invention remain effective against insects even after they are not burning anymore. Finally, the product of the invention has a better bio-efficacy than the comparative product.
For Insecticide product 7, the %KD and %LP were determined after 0, 10, 20, and 30 minutes of having ignited the product (0 hour). This means that, for 0, 10, 20 and 30 minutes immediately after having ignited the product, the mosquitos were exposed to the vapours emanating from the insecticide product. At 0, 10, 20, and 30 minutes the %LP and %KD were determined.
After 1.5 hours of having ignited the product a new population of mosquitoes was introduced into the chamber; and the %LP and %KD were determined at 90, 100, 110, and 120 minutes (2 hours) from the moment of ignition. This means that the mosquitoes were exposed to the (remaining) actives in the air for 0, 10, 20 and 30 minutes. The same was done at 3.5 hours, 5.5 hours and 7.5 hours. The results of these tests are shown in Table 5.
Table 5. Performance tests - Landing and probing - Kock-down after for insecticide product 7
Figure imgf000016_0001
The results in table 5 demonstrate that the insect control product according to the invention start working immediately after it has been ignited. Furthermore, the residual activity of the product is clearly shown by the %KD at 0 or 10 minutes of the mosquitoes’ population that is introduced at 1.5 hours or 3.5 hours.
Hence one or more objects of the present invention are achieved by the present which is further elucidated in the appended claims.
