Definitions
- the present invention relates to an insect control product, to a method for producing the insect control product, to a method for controlling flying insects, and to a use of the insect control product to control flying insects.
- Pyrethrins refers to a group of closely related esters extracted from the Pyrethrum flower (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium). These compounds are effective pesticides. Pyrethroids are any of several synthetic compounds chemically related to pyrethrin, having insecticidal activity. For example, permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid useful for killing adult mosquitoes.
- Pyrethroids tend to have a relatively low degree of toxicity to humans and animals and hence are desirable to use for pest control.
- Aerosol formulations containing pyrethroids have the added desirability of effectively delivering small amounts of active ingredient due to the dispersion of the active ingredient and penetrating nature of an aerosol spray.
- One way of releasing active ingredients continuously or semi-continuously during a certain period of time is by providing a composition in a container attached to an emanation device, as described in patent application WO 2013/144596 A1.
- an emanation device requires electric energy and it can be a problem in, for example, rural areas.
- Another way of releasing active ingredients is in the form of coils or sticks being formed from a combustible material which is shaped into a circular helix or rod, respectively. Included in the combustible material are one or more active ingredients.
- mosquito coils and sticks comprise a coil or a substrate, respectively, impregnated with an active ingredient.
- the substrate is a material which can be ignited and will slowly burn.
- the active ingredients are emanated into the atmosphere by virtue of their volatility to repel and/or knock-down mosquitoes.
- such coils and sticks will provide an effective level of the active ingredient in the atmosphere for an appropriate period of time.
- a coil is placed on a stand and burns over a period of two or more hours.
- Sticks are placed vertically in a holder which may be as simple as a bowl of sand. It is recognised that, while the use of volatile pyrethroids results in bite inhibition and possibly even temporary knockdown, the effect is not long lasting. This is mentioned in WO 2005/051078.
- the insect control product should be able to provide protection for example, during 4 hours after it has been ignited, meaning that it should provide protection during the whole night.
- This product repels and/or knocks-down insects, as soon as it is ignited, during its burning time and after it is not burning anymore.
- the protection it provides is of for example, at least 4 hours.
