Abstract
본 발명은 복수의 전극판과 복수의 전극판 사이에 위치하는 하나 이상의 분리막을 포함하는 전극조립체, 전극조립체가 수납된 케이스, 전극판으로부터 돌출 연장되어 형성된 전극 탭 및 전극 탭과 접합되어 외부와 전기적으로 연결되는 전극 리드를 포함하는 배터리 셀로서, 전극 탭은 전극판과 연결된 제1 탭부 및 제1 탭부로부터 연장되고 전극 리드가 접합되는 제2 탭부를 포함하고, 상기 제1 탭부에는 상기 전극 탭의 응력을 감소시키기 위한 응력 완화부가 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀에 관한 것이다.
Description
본 출원은 2020년 9월28일자 한국 특허 출원 제2020-0125806호에 기초한 우선권의 이익을 주장하며, 해당 한국 특허 출원의 문헌에 개시된 모든 내용은 본 명세서의 일부로서 포함된다.
본 발명은 전극 탭에서 발생하는 응력을 감소시켜 전극 탭이 단선되는 위험을 줄일 수 있는 응력 완화부가 형성된 전극 탭을 포함하는 배터리 셀에 관한 것이다.
스마트폰, 노트북, 디지털 카메라 등 모바일 기기에 대한 기술 개발과 수요가 증가함에 따라 충방전이 가능한 이차전지에 관한 기술이 활발해지고 있다. 또한, 이차 전지는 대기오염 물질을 유발하는 화석 연료의 대체 에너지원으로, 전기 자동차(EV), 하이브리드 전기자동차(HEV), 플러그-인 하이브리드 전기자동차(P-HEV) 및 에너지 저장 디바이스(ESS) 등에 적용되고 있다.
현재 널리 사용되는 이차전지의 종류에는 리튬 이온 전지, 리튬 폴리머 전지, 니켈 카드뮴 전지, 니켈 수소 전지, 니켈 아연 전지 등이 있다.
이차전지는 전지케이스에 전극조립체가 내장되어 있는 형태이며, 전극조립체는 양극판/분리막/음극판의 적층 구조로 이루어져 있으며, 양극판 및 음극판에는 각각 전극 탭이 돌출된 구조로 형성되어 있다.
또한, 양극판 및 음극판은 각각 금속 포일의 집전체 상에 활물질이 도포되어 형성되고, 전극 탭은 금속 포일의 외측에 활물질이 도포되지 않은 영역을 일정 패턴으로 절단하여 형성하거나, 용접 등의 방법으로 금속 포일에 접합하여 형성하게 된다.
이러한 전극 탭에는 이차전지를 제조하거나 사용하는 과정에서 가해지는 내/외력에 의하여 응력이 발생하게 된다.
도 1은 종래 기술의 전극 탭을 도시한 개략도이다.
도1에 도시된 바와 같이 종래의 전극 탭(10)은 전극판(20)과 연결되고 전극판(20)으로부터 돌출 연장된 제1 탭부(11) 및 제1 탭부(11)로부터 연장되고 전극 리드와 접합되는 제2 탭부(12)로 구성된다.
종래에는 상기와 같은 전극 탭을 형성할 때 전극판과의 연결부를 직각으로 절단하여 패터닝하는 방법을 사용하였다.
따라서, 전극 탭의 응력은 전극판(20)과 전극 탭(10)의 연결부 코너(C)에 집중되고, 이에 따라 응력이 집중된 연결부에서 단선이 발생할 위험이 커지는 문제가 있다.
본 발명은 상기와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여, 전극 탭의 일단에 응력 완화부를 형성하여 응력을 감소시킬 수 있는 전극 탭을 포함하는 배터리 셀을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
상기와 같은 목적을 달성하기 위한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 복수의 전극판과 복수의 전극판 사이에 위치하는 하나 이상의 분리막을 포함하는 전극조립체, 전극조립체가 수납된 케이스, 전극판으로부터 돌출 연장되어 형성된 전극 탭 및 전극 탭과 접합되어 외부와 전기적으로 연결되는 전극 리드를 포함하는 배터리 셀로서, 전극 탭은 전극판과 연결된 제1 탭부 및 제1 탭부로부터 연장되고, 전극 리드가 접합되는 제2 탭부를 포함하고, 상기 제1 탭부에는 전극 탭의 응력을 감소시키기 위한 응력 완화부가 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 응력 완화부가 제1 탭부와 전극판 사이의 일정한 곡률 반경(R)을 가지도록 패터닝된 연결부 코너인 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 응력 완화부가 일정한 곡률 반경(CR)을 가진 호의 형태로 커팅된 제1 탭부의 측면인 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 제1 탭부가 전극판과 제2 탭부 사이의 중앙 부분에서 폭이 최소가 되는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 응력 완화부의 곡률 반경(CR)이 전극판과 제2 탭부 사이의 길이보다 작은 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 전극판이 양극판과 음극판을 포함하고, 양극판과 음극판 각각은 전극조립체 내에 복수로 구비되어 있는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 제2 탭부가 복수의 양극판 또는 복수의 음극판 각각으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭이 적층되어 형성된 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 양극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭과 음극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭이 서로 같은 방향으로 돌출된 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 양극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭과 음극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭이 서로 마주보는 방향으로 돌출된 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀은 케이스가 파우치형 케이스인 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 배터리 모듈은 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한 본 발명에 따른 디바이스는 본 발명에 따른 배터리 모듈을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
본 발명의 배터리 셀은 전극 탭이 응력 완화부를 구비하여 전극 탭에 외력 등이 작용하더라도, 발생하는 응력을 감소시켜 단선의 위험을 줄일 수 있는 장점이 있다.

이하, 본 발명에 따른 배터리 셀에 관하여 첨부한 도면을 참조하여 설명하기로 한다.
도 2는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 배터리 셀의 단면 일부를 도시한 단면도이다.
도 2를 참조하여 본 발명의 배터리 셀을 살펴보면, 본 발명의 배터리 셀(100)은 전극조립체(110), 전극조립체(110)가 수납되는 케이스(120), 전극 탭(130) 및 전극 리드(140)를 포함한다.
먼저 전극조립체(110)는 양극판/분리막/음극판이 교대로 적층된 구조를 가지며, 전극조립체(110) 내에 양극판과 음극판이 단수로 구비되는 경우도 있으나, 배터리 셀(100)의 용량을 고려하여 복수로 구비되는 것이 바람직하다.
한편, 전극조립체(110)의 종류는 활물질이 도포된 긴 시트형의 양극판과 음극판 사이에 분리막을 개재하여 권취한 젤리-롤형, 소정 크기의 다수의 양극판과 음극판 사이에 분리막이 개재된 상태에서 순차적으로 적층한 스택형 및 적층형의 단위셀들을 분리 필름으로 권취한 스택/폴딩형으로 분류된다.
케이스(120)는 이러한 전극조립체(110)를 수납하는 외장재로 배터리 셀은 케이스(120)의 형상에 따라 전극조립체(110)가 원통형 또는 각형의 금속 캔에 내장되어 있는 원통형 배터리 셀, 전극조립체(110)가 파우치형 케이스에 내장되어 있는 파우치형 배터리 셀로 분류할 수 있다.
파우치형 케이스는 통상적으로 내부층/금속층/외부층의 라미네이트 시트 구조로 이루어져 있다. 내부층은 전극 조립체와 직접적으로 접촉하므로 절연성과 내전해액성을 가져야 하고, 또 외부와의 밀폐를 위하여 실링성 즉, 내부층끼리 열 접착된 실링 부위는 우수한 열접착 강도를 가져야 한다.
이러한 내부층의 재료로는 내화학성이 우수하면서도 실링성이 좋은 폴리프로필렌, 폴리에틸렌, 폴리에틸렌아크릴산, 폴리부틸렌 등의 폴리올레핀계 수지, 폴리우레탄수지 및 폴리이미드수지로부터 선택될 수 있으나 이에 한정하지 않으며, 인장강도, 강성, 표면경도, 내충격 강도 등의 기계적 물성과 내화학성이 뛰어난 폴리프로필렌이 가장 바람직하다.
내부층과 접하고 있는 금속층은 외부로부터 수분이나 각종 가스가 전지 내부로 침투하는 것을 방지하는 배리어층에 해당되고, 이러한 금속층의 바람직한 재료로는 가벼우면서도 성형성이 우수한 알루미늄 박막을 사용할 수 있다.
그리고 금속층의 타측면에는 외부층이 구비되며, 이러한 외부층은 전극 조립체를 보호하면서 내열성과 내화학성을 확보할 수 있도록 인장강도, 투습방지성 및 공기 투과 방지성이 우수한 내열성 폴리머를 사용할 수 있고, 일 예로 나일론 또는 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트를 사용할 수 있으나 이에 제한하지 않는다.
도 2 등에서는 배터리 셀(100)이 파우치형 케이스(120)에 내장된 파우치형 배터리 셀(100)인 것을 도시하고 있으나, 본 발명의 배터리 셀(100)은 이에 한정되지 않고 전극 탭(130)이 전극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 배터리 셀(100)이면 어떤 형태의 배터리 셀(100)에도 적용 가능하다.
또한, 전극 리드(140)는 전극 탭과 접합되어 외부와 전기적으로 연결되는 것으로, 접합의 방법은 초음파 용접, 저항 용접 또는 레이저 용접 등 공지의 다양한 용접 방법이 사용될 수 있다.
도 3은 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 응력 완화부가 형성된 전극 탭을 도시한 개략도이며, 도 4은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 응력 완화부가 형성된 전극 탭을 도시한 개략도이다.
도 3 및 도 4를 참조하여 본 발명의 전극 탭(130)에 대하여 상세하게 살펴보면, 전극 탭(130)은 전극판(150)과 연결되어 돌출 연장된 제1 탭부(131a, 131b), 제1 탭부(131a, 131b)로부터 연장되고 전극 리드(140)가 접합되는 제2 탭부(132a, 132b) 및 전극 탭(130)에 가해지는 응력을 완화시키기 위한 응력 완화부(133a, 133b)를 포함한다.
이러한 전극 탭(130)은 전극조립체(110)의 양극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 양극 탭과 음극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 음극 탭을 포함하고, 양극 탭과 음극 탭은 각각 극성별로 모아져 적층되고, 적층된 양극 탭과 음극 탭은 각각 초음파 용접, 저항 용접 또는 레이저 용접 등의 방법으로 결합될 수 있다.
여기서, 양극 탭과 음극 탭은 서로 같은 방향으로 돌출될 수도 있고, 서로 마주보는 방향으로 돌출될 수도 있다.
양극 탭과 음극 탭이 같은 방향으로 돌출되는 경우에는 양극 탭과 음극 탭의 간섭을 피할 수 있도록 위치하는 것이 필요하다.
예를 들면, 전극 탭(130)들이 돌출되는 측면의 중심을 기준으로 양극 탭이 일측으로 치우쳐 위치한다면 음극 탭은 양극 탭과 반대쪽으로 치우쳐 위치하는 것이 바람직하다.
한편, 서로 마주보는 방향으로 돌출되는 경우에는 그 위치에 크게 구에 받지 않으나, 돌출되는 측면의 중심에 위치하는 것이 일반적이다.
또한, 본 발명의 전극 탭(130)에는 전극 탭(130)에 가해지는 내/외력에 의하여 발생하는 응력을 감소시키기 위한 응력 완화부(133)가 구비되어 있다.
이러한 응력 완화부(133a)의 하나의 예로 도 3에 도시된 응력 완화부(133a)를 들 수 있다.
이는 전극 탭(130)에서 발생하는 응력에 취약한 전극판(150)과 전극 탭(130) 사이의 연결부 코너를 직각으로 패터닝하지 않고, 일정한 곡률 반경(R)을 가지도록 패터닝 함으로써 연결부 코너에 집중되는 응력을 완화시키는 역할을 하게 된다.
도 5는 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 응력 완화부가 형성된 전극 탭의 응력 완화부 곡률 반경과 응력 최대값 사이의 관계를 도시한 그래프이다.
도 5를 참조하여 이와 같은 응력 완화부(133a)를 구비한 경우에 곡률 반경(R)과 전극 탭(130)에 가해지는 응력(Stress)의 최대값과의 관계를 살펴보면, 곡률 반경이 4mm에 근접할수록 응력 최대값이 낮아지고, 4mm에서 최저가 되며, 4mm보다 커질수록 응력 최대값도 커지는 경향을 보인다.
즉, 응력 완화부(133a)의 곡률 반경(R)이 4mm인 경우가 응력이 최소가 됨을 볼 수 있다.
도 6은 본 발명의 다른 실시예에 따른 응력 완화부가 형성된 전극 탭의 응력 완화부 곡률 반경과 응력 최대값 사이의 관계를 도시한 그래프이다.
도 4 및 도 6을 참조하여 다른 형태의 응력 완화부(133b)에 대하여 살펴보면, 응력 완화부(133b)는 전극 탭(130)의 제1 탭부(131b)의 측면에 일정한 곡률 반경(CR)을 가진 호의 형태로 커팅되어 형성된다.
즉, 제1 탭부(131b)의 중앙부분에서 제1 탭부(131b)의 폭이 최소가 되도록 측면이 커팅되어 있는 형태이다.
이와 같이 제1 탭부(131b)의 측면을 사이드 컷(side-cut) 함으로써 전극판(150)과 전극 탭(130) 사이의 연결부 코너에 집중되는 응력을 분산시키는 것이 가능하다.
다만, 제1 탭부(131b) 측면의 사이드 컷되는 깊이는 제1 탭부(131b)의 기계적 강도와 전류의 양이 도선의 면적에 비례한다는 점을 고려할 때, 응력 완화부(133b) 곡률 반경(CR)이 전극판과 제2 탭부(132b) 사이의 길이보다 작은 것이 바람직하다.
응력 완화부(133b)의 곡률 반경(CR)과 응력(Stress) 최대값과의 관계를 살펴보면, 곡률 반경(CR)이 1.5mm에서 2mm 사이에서 응력 최대값이 최소가 되며, 곡률 반경(CR)이 2mm 보다 커질수록 응력 최대값도 증가하는 경향을 보인다.
한편, 위에서 살펴본 두 실시예 중 제1 탭부(131b)의 측면에 일정 곡률 반경(CR)을 가진 호의 형태로 커팅한 응력 완화부(133b)를 가진 전극 탭(130)에서 응력 최대값이 더 낮은 것을 볼 수 있다.
그러나, 전극 탭(130)에 두 가지 형태의 응력 완화부(133a, 133b) 중 어떤 것을 적용할 것인지는 전극조립체 형성 공정의 여러 조건이나 적용하고자 하는 배터리 셀(100)에서 필요로 하는 조건들을 고려하여 적절히 선택 가능하다.
위에서 살펴본 바와 같이, 응력 완화부(133)를 형성함으로써 전극 탭(130)에서 발생하는 응력을 감소시킬 수 있고, 이에 따라 전극 탭(130)이 단선되는 위험을 낮출 수 있는 효과가 있다.
또한, 이러한 응력 완화부(133)를 구비한 배터리 셀(100)을 포함하여 배터리 모듈을 제조하는 것도 가능하며, 이와 같은 배터리 모듈을 각종 디바이스의 전원 공급원으로 사용할 수도 있다.
이상으로 본 발명 내용의 특정한 부분을 상세히 기술하였는 바, 당업계의 통상의 지식을 가진 자에게, 이러한 구체적 기술은 단지 바람직한 실시 양태일 뿐이며, 이에 의해 본 발명의 범위가 제한되는 것은 아니며, 본 발명의 범주 및 기술사상 범위 내에서 다양한 변경 및 수정이 가능함은 당업자에게 있어서 명백한 것이며, 이러한 변형 및 수정이 첨부된 특허청구범위에 속하는 것도 당연하다.

Claims (12)
- 복수의 전극판(150)과 상기 복수의 전극판(150) 사이에 위치하는 하나 이상의 분리막을 포함하는 전극조립체(110);상기 전극조립체(110)가 수납된 케이스(120);상기 전극판(150)으로부터 돌출 연장되어 형성된 전극 탭(130); 및상기 전극 탭(130)과 접합되어 외부와 전기적으로 연결되는 전극 리드(140);를 포함하는 배터리 셀(100)로서,상기 전극 탭(130)은 상기 전극판(150)과 연결된 제1 탭부(131) 및 상기 제1 탭부(131)로부터 연장되고, 상기 전극 리드(140)가 접합되는 제2 탭부(132)를 포함하고, 상기 제1 탭부(131)에는 상기 전극 탭(130)의 응력을 감소시키기 위한 응력 완화부(133)가 형성되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 응력 완화부(133a)는 상기 제1 탭부(131a)와 전극판(150) 사이의 일정한 곡률 반경(R)을 가지도록 패터닝된 연결부 코너인 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 응력 완화부(133b)는 일정한 곡률 반경(CR)을 가진 호의 형태로 커팅된 제1 탭부(131b)의 측면인 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
- 제3항에 있어서, 상기 제1 탭부(131b)는 상기 전극판(150)과 상기 제2 탭부(132b) 사이의 중앙 부분에서 폭이 최소가 되는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀.
- 제3항에 있어서, 상기 응력 완화부(133b)의 곡률 반경(CR)은 상기 전극판(150)과 상기 제2 탭부(132b) 사이의 길이보다 작은 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 전극판(150)은 양극판과 음극판을 포함하고, 상기 양극판과 상기 음극판 각각은 상기 전극조립체 내에 복수로 구비되어 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).

- 제7항에 있어서, 상기 양극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭(130)과 상기 음극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭(130)은 서로 같은 방향으로 돌출된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
- 제7항에 있어서, 상기 양극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭(130)과 상기 음극판으로부터 돌출 연장된 전극 탭(130)은 서로 마주보는 방향으로 돌출된 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 케이스(120)는 파우치형 케이스인 것을 특징으로 하는 배터리 셀(100).
