Description

Hand Sanitising Composition, Apparatus and Dispensing Unit
Field of the invention
The present disclosure relates to a sanitising composition, apparatus, and dispensing unit for dispensing such composition.
Background
Sanitising compositions, an in particular hand sanitisers, aim to provide a means of killing harmful pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and/or other microbes that may be spread by physical contact.
Hand sanitisers can be provided in various forms including gels, foams, sprays or the like. Sanitising compositions can typically be alcohol-based or water-based.
A problem with conventional hand sanitisers is that they are typically provided in a form which is convenient for individual use, such as small alcohol gel bottles, but ill- suited to certain environments such as large environments with numerous people like factories, offices, etc.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate and/or mitigate the limitations and/or disadvantages associated with the prior art and/or with conventional systems.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect there is provided a pressurised sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant.
The at least one biocide may comprise a quaternary amine compound, such as an N-alkyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride and/or an N-alkyl dimethyl-ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride.
The at least one biocide may comprise one or more quaternary amine compounds selected from the group consisting of N-alkyl (60% C14, 30% C16, 5% C12, 5% C18) dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 68391-01-5), N-alkyl (68% C12, 32% C14) dimethyl-ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 85409- 23-0), and/or Didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 7173-51-5).
The at least one biocide may comprise an amine oxide, such as lauryl dimethylamine oxide (CAS number 70592-80-2).
The biocidal composition may comprise the at least one biocide in an amount in the range of about 0.001 wt% - 10 wt%, e.g. about 0.005 wt% - 5 wt%, e.g. about 0.01 wt% - 1 wt%.
The biocidal composition may comprise a quaternary amine compound in an amount in the range of about 0.001 wt% - 10 wt%, e.g. about 0.005 wt% - 5 wt%, e.g. about 0.01 wt% - 1 wt%.
The biocidal composition may comprise an amine oxide compound in an amount in the range of about 0.001 wt% - 1 wt%, e.g. about 0.005 wt% - 0.5 wt%, e.g. about 0.01 wt%.
The biocidal composition may comprise a mixture of quaternary amine compounds. In an embodiment, the biocidal composition may comprise a mixture of N- alkyl (60% C14, 30% C16, 5% C12, 5% C18) dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride and N-alkyl (68% C12, 32% C14) dimethyl-ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, each in an amount of about 0.01 wt% - 1 wt%, e.g. about 0.9 wt%.
The biocidal composition may comprise a mixture of a quaternary amine compound and an amine oxide. In an embodiment, the biocidal composition may comprise a mixture of didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride in an amount of up to 0.02 wt% (e.g. between 0.001 and 0.02 wt%), and an amine oxide in an amount of up to 0.01% (e.g. between 0.001 and 0.01 wt%).
The sanitising composition, e.g., the biocidal composition, may further comprise one or more non-biocidal ingredients such as a fragrance, a skin conditioner, an emollient, a viscosity modifier, etc.
The biocidal composition may be an aqueous composition. Advantageously, this may help reduce or minimise damage, e.g. drying or irritation, to a user’s skin, e.g. hands.
The gas propellant may be comprise, may consist essentially of or may consist of an inert gas. The gas propellant may comprise, may consist essentially of or may consist of carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Typically, the gas propellant may comprise, may consist essentially of or may consist of nitrogen.
Typically, the sanitising composition is provided as a pressurised composition. Typically, the pressure of the composition may be in the range of about 100-406 psi (about 6.9 - 28 bar), e.g. about 150-350 psi (about 10.3 - 24.1 bar), typically about 200-280 psi (about 13.8 - 19.3 bar).
Typically, the composition may be provided in a container, typically a sealed container, e.g. a canister.
The biocidal composition may be a water-based composition. Advantageously, the biocidal composition may be devoid or may be free of any flammable components.
In an embodiment, the pressurised sanitising composition may consist essentially of or may consist of: an aqueous biocidal composition comprising: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant.
By such provision, advantageously, the sanitising composition may be devoid or may be free of any flammable components, and thus may be termed a non-flammable composition.
Advantageously also, the provision of an aqueous sanitising composition and/or biocidal composition may help reduce or minimise damage, e.g. drying or irritation, to a user’s skin, e.g. hands.
The sanitising composition may be a hand sanitising composition, e.g. a hand rub.
According to a second aspect there is provided a kit for storing a sanitising composition, comprising: a container; and a sanitising composition provided inside the container, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant.
The sanitising composition and/or the biocidal composition may be as described in relation to the first aspect. According to a third aspect there is provided an apparatus for dispensing a sanitising composition, the apparatus comprising: a container containing a sanitising composition, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant; a dispenser connectable to the container, the dispenser being configured to dispense the sanitising composition; an actuator configured to actuate the dispenser; and a unit configured to receive and/or hold the container, the dispenser, and the actuator.
Typically, the container may be a canister.
The apparatus may be a hand sanitising apparatus and/or may be configured to dispense a/the sanitising composition to the hands of a user.
The unit may be configured to provide or hold the dispenser so as to permit dispensing of the sanitising composition to the hands of a user.
The dispenser may comprise a nozzle for dispensing the sanitising composition.
The dispenser may further comprise a trigger configured to activate dispensing of the sanitising composition.

The connection may be suitable for use at a pressure of up to about 406 psi (about 28 bar), e.g. up to about 350 psi (about 24 bar).
The container may be a conventional canister, e.g. a 22.1 L canister.
The container may be a metal container or canister.
The container may be a plastic container or canister. Advantageously, this may reduce the weight of the container compared to a metal container.
The container may be a recyclable and/or refillable container.
In an embodiment, the container may be a refillable plastic container such as a Fourtis™ container as marketed by Amtrol Alfa.
The actuator may be configured to actuate the dispenser.
The actuator may be connected to the dispenser.
The actuator may comprise or may be a mechanical actuator. The actuator may be mechanically connected to the dispenser, e.g. to a/the trigger thereof. There may be provided a mechanical connection, e.g. a cable, between the actuator and the dispenser, e.g. trigger. By such provision, movement of the actuator by a user may mechanically activate the actuator, for example by moving, e.g. pulling on, the trigger.
The actuator, e.g. mechanical actuator, may comprise or may be provided in the form of a movable element such as a handle, button, pedal or the like. Conveniently, the actuator may be a pedal, e.g., a foot pedal. Provision of a foot- activated actuator may be more hygienic as it avoids physical contact between the apparatus and a user’s hands.
The actuator may comprise or may be an electronic actuator. The actuator may be electronically connected or paired to the dispenser. The actuator may comprise or may be provided in the form of a button, electronic sensor such as motion sensor or heat sensor, or the like. Thus, activation of the actuator, e.g. via a button or sensor, may electronically actuate the dispenser, for example by dispensing a predetermined amount, e.g. volume or weight, of sanitising composition. The actuator, e.g. sensor, may be connected to the dispenser via an electronic connection, which may be wired or wireless.
The apparatus may comprise a motor coupled to the actuator and configured to operate the dispenser upon activation of the actuator.
The motor and/or actuator, e.g. electronic actuator, may be connectable to a power source. The power source may comprise a mains supply, In such instance, the actuator, e.g. electronic actuator, may be connected to a mains plug via an electric wire or cable.
The power source may comprise a portable battery, which may be connected to the actuator and/or motor. This may increase the portability of the apparatus by mitigating the need for a mains power supply.
Advantageously, the power source may comprise a renewable power source, e.g. one or more photovoltaic modules or solar panels, which may be connected to the actuator and/or motor. Typically, the renewable power source, e.g. solar panel, may be provided on an upper portion or upper side of the apparatus, e.g. on an upper portion or upper side of the unit.
The unit may have a first or forward side. The term “forward” will not be understood in a strict sense but rather may relate to a side of the apparatus configured to face a user, in use. The first or forward side may define a user interface.
The actuator, e.g. pedal, may be provided on or may extend from the first or forward side.
At least a portion of the dispenser, e.g. nozzle, may be provided on or may extend from the first or forward side. Conveniently, the dispenser nozzle may face downwards. By such provision, in use, actuation of the dispenser may cause the sanitising composition to fall by gravity on the hands of a user.
The unit may comprise a storing compartment.
The storing compartment may be configured to receive and/or store the container.
The storing compartment may be configured to face towards a second or rear side, e.g. a side opposite the first or forward side.
The storing compartment may be configured to store or hold at least part of the dispenser, e.g. a portion of the dispenser connected to the container.
Conveniently, the apparatus and/or the unit thereof may be configured to be portable. The term portable will be understood to mean that the unit or apparatus may be moved easily by a single person from one location to another location and/or may be self-contained. Advantageously, the apparatus and/or the unit may not require or contain any permanent or semi-permanent peripheral component such as electrical supply, chemical feed or the like. Thus, the apparatus may provide a convenient portable system suitable for heavy duty or intensive use. Typically, the container may be capable of delivering at least 5,000, e.g. at least 10,000, e.g. about 15,000 individual sanitising shots before the container needs to be replaced.
Features described above in respect of the first or second aspects are equally applicable to the apparatus according the third aspect, and are not repeated here merely for reasons of brevity.
According to a fourth aspect there is provided a kit of parts for providing an apparatus according to the third aspect, the kit of parts comprising: a container containing a sanitising composition, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant; a dispenser connectable to the container, the dispenser being configured to dispense the sanitising composition; an actuator configured to actuate the dispenser; and a unit configured to receive and/or hold the container, the dispenser, and the actuator.
Features described above in respect of the first, second or third aspects are equally applicable to the kit according the fourth aspect, and are not repeated here merely for reasons of brevity.
For the avoidance of doubt, any feature described in respect of any aspect of the invention may be applied to any other aspect of the invention, in any appropriate combination. For example, composition features may be applied to apparatus features and vice versa.

The present invention will now be further described in detail and with reference to the figures in which:
Figure 1 shows a canister according to a first embodiment;
Figures 2 to 6 show an apparatus according to a second embodiment; Figures 7 and 8 show an apparatus according to a third embodiment.
Detailed Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 shows a canister 10 according to a first embodiment. The canister 10 has a canister body 12, and handle 14, and a valve 16. The canister 10 is a standard 22.1 L. The canister 10 is suitable to receive a sanitising composition according to the present invention, as described in more detail in the examples below.
Figures 2 to 6 show an apparatus 20 according to another embodiment. The apparatus 20 has a canister 10 as described in relation to Figure 1. The apparatus also includes a disperser 40 in the form of a spray gun, which is configured to dispense the sanitising composition within the canister 10. The valve 16 of the canister 10 is connected to the dispenser 40 via tubing 18.
The tubing 18 is configured to allow feeding of the sanitising composition from the canister 10 to the dispenser 40, and is suitable for use at a pressure of up to about 406 psi (about 28 bar), e.g. up to about 350 psi (about 24 bar). Typically, the pressure inside the canister 10 may be approximately 250psi (17.2 bar).
The apparatus 20 includes an actuator 50 configured to actuate the dispenser 40. In this embodiment, the actuator 50 is in the form of a foot pedal 50.
The canister 10, dispenser 40, and actuator 50 are provided within unit 30.
As shown in Figure 2, the canister 10 and dispenser 40 are provided on a rear side 31 of the unit 30 which is configured to face away from a user when in use. In this embodiment, the rear side 31 is provided with a door 38 which allows the components therein to be hidden and also which may avoid tampering of a user with any such components.
As best shown in Figure 3, the dispenser 40 has a trigger 42 configured to activate dispensing of the sanitising composition. The trigger 42 is secured to a first end of a cable 52. As best shown in Figure 4, the other end of cable 52 is secured to actuator 50. In this embodiment, the actuator is a mechanical actuator in the form of a foot pedal actuator 50 which is secured to a bottom surface 34 of the unit 30. Figures 5 and 6 show a front side 32 of the unit 30 which is configured to face a user when in use. Thus unit 30 has a recess 35 configured to receive a user’s hands.
As shown in Figure 6, the recess 35 defines an upper surface 36 which has an aperture 37 configured to allow the dispenser 40 to dispense the composition through the aperture 37 upon actuation by the pedal 50. In this embodiment, the nozzle 44 of the dispenser 40 protrudes slightly through the aperture 37.
Figures 7 and 8 show an apparatus 120 according to another embodiment. The apparatus 120 is generally similar to the apparatus 20 of Figures 2 to 6, like parts being denoted by like numerals, incremented by ‘100’.
As shown in Figures 7 and 8, in this embodiment, the actuator is an electronic actuator in the form of a sensor and motor 162 which can detect a user placing their hand(s) within recess 135. The actuator 162 is provided on an upper surface 136 of the recess 135 of the unit 130.
As shown in broken line 164, the electronic actuator 162 is connected via electrical connection 164 to a power source in the form of a solar panel 160 provided on an upper surface 138 of the unit 130. As an alternative power source there is also provided a power socket 166 which is connected to the electronic actuator 162 via electrical connection 167.
Examples
Examples of sanitising compositions used in the canister 10 are described below.
Example 1
A first biocidal composition consisted of:
0.9 wt% N-alkyl (60% C14, 30% C16, 5% C12, 5% C18) dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 68391-01-5);
0.9 wt% N-alkyl (68% C12, 32% C14) dimethyl-ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 85409-23-0); and water. Example 2
A second biocidal composition consisted of: about 0.02 wt% didecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (CAS number 7173-51-5); about 0.01 wt% lauryl dimethylamine oxide (CAS number 70592-80-2); and water.
Canister 10 was filled with 12kg the composition of example 1 or example 2, and then pressured with nitrogen up to 250psi (17.2 bar).
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as described herein without departing from the scope of the present invention. The present embodiments are therefore to be considered for illustrative purposes and are not restrictive, and are not limited to the extent of that described in the embodiment.

Claims

Claims
1. A pressurised sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant.
2. A composition according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one biocide comprises a quaternary amine compound.
3. A composition according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the at least one biocide comprises an N-alkyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride and/or an N-alkyl dimethyl- ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride.
4. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the at least one biocide comprises an amine oxide.
5. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the at least one biocide is provided in an amount in the range of about 0.001 wt% - 10 wt%.
6. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the biocidal composition is an aqueous composition.
7. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the gas propellant is nitrogen or carbon dioxide.
8. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the sanitising composition is provided as a pressurised composition, wherein the pressure of the composition is in the range of about 100-406 psi (about 6.9 - 28 bar).
9. A composition according to any preceding claim, wherein the composition is provided in a sealed canister.
10. A kit for storing a sanitising composition, comprising: a container; and a sanitising composition provided inside the container, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant.
11. An apparatus for dispensing a sanitising composition, the apparatus comprising: a container containing a sanitising composition, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant; a dispenser connectable to the container, the dispenser being configured to dispense the sanitising composition; an actuator configured to actuate the dispenser; and a unit configured to receive and/or hold the container, the dispenser, and the actuator.
12. An apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the container is a canister.
13. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 12, wherein the unit is configured to provide or hold the dispenser so as to permit dispensing of the sanitising composition to the hands of a user.
14. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 13, wherein the dispenser comprises a nozzle for dispensing the sanitising composition.
15. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 14, wherein the dispenser further comprises a trigger configured to activate dispensing of the sanitising composition.
16. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 15, wherein the container is connected to the dispenser via as a tube or pipe connection.
17. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 16, wherein the actuator is a mechanical actuator.
18. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 16, wherein the actuator is an electronic actuator.
19. An apparatus according to claim 18, wherein he apparatus comprises a motor coupled to the actuator and configured to operate the dispenser upon activation of the actuator.
20. An apparatus according to claim 19, wherein the motor and/or actuator is connectable to a power source.
21. An apparatus according to claim 20, wherein the power source comprises a photovoltaic module.
22. An apparatus according to any of claims 11 to 21, wherein the unit comprises a storing compartment configured to receive and/or store the container.
23. A kit of parts for providing an apparatus according to claim 11 , the kit of parts comprising: a container containing a sanitising composition, the sanitising composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: a biocidal composition comprising, consisting essentially of or consisting of: at least one biocide; and water; and a gas propellant; a dispenser connectable to the container, the dispenser being configured to dispense the sanitising composition; an actuator configured to actuate the dispenser; and a unit configured to receive and/or hold the container, the dispenser, and the actuator.
