Definitions
- the present invention relates to a glove, in particular a glove having a waterproof layer that makes it useful for washing and dishing applications and/or other applications in which waterproof properties are vital.
- Waterproof gloves are requested in many applications, such as any handling of liquids that may affect the skin, washing, dishing or in connection with activities such as sports, in which it is requested that the skin of a person is prevented from direct contact with a liquid, which is normally water.
- Gloves having a single waterproof layer are known, as well as gloves having an inner layer in combination with an outer layer that is waterproof.
- the waterproof layer may comprise a polymer or rubber and the inner layer may comprise a textile.
- Common materials are latex, PVC, silicone and nitrile rubber.
- the waterproof layer comprises rubber or nitrile
- the waterproof layer material may in itself also be allergenic.
- the inner layer may adopt the sweat from the skin, but there will still be a problem of the skin being subjected to humidity. In particular, persons having a skin sensitive to eczema will still suffer from the humidity in such a glove.
- a typical inner layer material may comprise cotton.
- the object of the invention is achieved by means of a glove, comprising at least three layers comprising a first layer consisting of a hydrophobic material having a high wicking ability, a second layer comprising a hydrophilic material having high absorption ability, and a third layer consisting of a material which is waterproof.
- the first layer is the innermost of said layers
- the second layer forms an intermediate layer between the first layer and the third layer
- the third layer forms an outermost layer of said three layers, when the glove is in an operational position (i.e. not turned inside out). Sweat from the skin will be transported through the first layer and absorbed by the second layer, thereby to a high degree preventing direct contact between the skin and the sweat.
- the third layer is also steam proof.
- the second layer may consist of a mixture of said hydrophilic material and said hydrophobic material, or solely consist of the hydrophilic material.
- Wicking is referred to as the ability of a fibre to transport moisture along its surface structure.
- said first layer consists of polyester, PET, polypropylene, PP, wool, or a combination thereof.
- the first layer consists of polypropylene, PP.
- PP polypropylene
- the first layer comprises fibres.
- the first layer comprises synthetic fibres.
- synthetic fibres may be provided with a predetermined cross-sectional shape that will promote their wicking ability.
- said first layer comprises fibres having a trilobal cross-sectional surface. A fibre having trilobal cross-section will have a higher wicking ability than a corresponding fibre (same material and dimension) having a circular cross-section.
- said second layer comprises wool, a textile made of wood/cellulose, or a combination thereof.
- the wool is a wool treated to be able to withstand washing at 40 C without shrinking. Wool has the advantage of having a great absorption capacity.
- the wool fibre is provided with a film thereon of a material having lower content of lanoline than the wool fibre, in order to further reduce skin irritation.
- wool is wool EXP.
- the second layer comprises wool fibres having a protective layer thereon preventing lanolin in the wool from being exposed on the surface of the fibre.
- the first layer comprises a knitted structure.
- a knitted structure is generally porous and stretchable, and more stretchable than a woven structure.
- the first layer is a stocking stitch layer.
- the second layer comprises a knitted structure.
- the first and second layer are knitted with a gauge which is larger than 10.
- the gauge is referred to as the number of knitting needles per inch, when knitting with a knit maching. A higher gauge will result in better wicking ability and absorption for a predetermined combined thickness for the first and second layers.
- the first layer and the second layer are formed by means of Swiss wevenit or by means of plaited stocking stitch.
- plaited stocking stitch resulted in improved wicking ability of the first layer as well as better absorption of the second layer.
- the first and second layers are joined by means of the plated stocking stitch or the Swiss wevenit.
- Stocking stitch is a classic knitting pattern where you alternate knit stitches in the first row and purl stitches in the return row. It creates a very smooth and stretchy surface on the right side and that's the reason why it is favored in very fine stockings. According to embodiments of the present invention, the right side forms the second layer and the wrong side forms first layer. In tests performed by the applicant, it has been observed that structures of stocking stitch has better wicking ability than knitted structures according the single piquet principle, the double piquet principle and the honeycomb principle.
- Plaited stocking stitch comprises knitting the tricot on the right side, while the plaiting is introduced on the wrong side of the product.
- the two sides are homogenous and separate from each other, forming the first layer and the second layer of the glove according to the present invention.
- the plaited wrong side will form the side of the first layer, which is turned away from the second layer, and thus in contact with the skin of a user.
- Swiss wevenit is referred to as a knitting made of four stitching systems, wherein stitching systems one and three knits the second (moisture-absorbing) layer, and stitching systems two and four knits the first (wicking) layer.
- One side of the thus knitted fabric will, as a result of the use of Swiss wevenit, consist of only the wicking material (thereby forming the first layer), while the other side consists of a mixture of the moisture-absorbing material and the wicking material (thereby forming the second layer).
- the third layer consists of a polymer or rubber.
- the fabric formed by the first and second layers may be provided as an inner glove arranged inside an outer glove formed by the third layer, and removably arranged with regard to the latter, such that it may be removed and washed separately.
- said fabric may be permanently attached to the outer glove.
- Fig. 1 is a cross-section showing layers of a glove according to the invention.
- Fig. 2 shows the principle of stocking stitch,
- Fig. 3 shows the principle of plaited stocking stitch
- Fig, 4 is a figure showing the four knitting principles of Swiss Wevenit, DETAILED DESCRIPTION

- the second layer 3 consists of wool (Wool EXP) having a protective layer on the fibres preventing lanolin in the wool from being exposed on the surface of the wool fibre.
- a second alternative embodiment differs from the embodiment mentioned above in that the second layer 3 consists of cotton.
- the above-mentioned embodiments may have a first layer consisting of polyester.
- Fig. 2 shows the principle of stocking stitch.
- Stocking stitch is a classic knitting pattern where you alternate knit stitches in the first row and purl stitches in the return row. It creates a very smooth and stretchy surface on the right side and that's the reason why it is favored in very fine stockings.
- a stocking stitch product 5 may also referred to as tricot.
- the two sides (or "faces") of the fabric are usually designated as the right side (the side that faces outwards, towards the viewer and away from the wearer's body) and the wrong side (the side that faces inwards, away from the viewer and towards the wearer's body). In embodiments in which stocking stitch is applied, the right side forms the second layer 3 and the wrong side forms first layer 1.
- Fig. 3 shows the principle of plaited stocking stitch 6.
- Plaited stocking stitch comprises knitting the tricot on the right side, while plaiting is introduced on the wrong side of the product.
- the two sides are homogenous and separate from each other, forming the first layer and the second layer of the glove according to the present invention.
- the plaited wrong side will form the side of the first layer that is turned away from the second layer, and thus in contact with the skin of a user.
- Fig. 4 shows the principle of Swiss wevenit.
- Swiss wevenit is referred to as a knitting made of four stitching systems 7, 8, 9, 10, wherein stitching systems one 7 and three 9 knits the second (moisture-absorbing) layer, and stitching systems two 8 and four 10 knits the first (wicking) layer.
