Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of forming a sintered metal, and more particularly, to a method of forming a sintered metal capable of suppressing carburization and oxidation.
- Tungsten is the most resistant to heat among metal elements (atomic number: 74, melting point: 3,410 °C), high temperature and wear resistance are required, and is used in extreme situations. is becoming In particular, due to its low coefficient of thermal expansion and excellent high-temperature mechanical properties, it is currently in the spotlight as a material used in extreme environments as aircraft structural materials, military structural materials, and nuclear fusion facing materials. However, in the case of tungsten, its application is limited because it exhibits high brittle behavior at room temperature due to its high ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The DBTT temperature and room temperature brittle physical properties further deteriorate the physical properties of tungsten as it acts as a crack propagation path in the presence of fine oxides and carbides inside tungsten.
- DBTT ductile-brittle transition temperature
- tungsten At high temperatures, tungsten (W) is very easy to form carbides and oxides, and easily forms a brittle phase in the form of W 1-x C x , W 1-y O y . Therefore, in order to compensate for the above disadvantages, it is necessary to minimize contamination of impurities (C, O, etc.) that may occur during manufacturing of a tungsten material. However, it is quite difficult to precisely control such impurities in the process.
- the technical problem to be achieved by the technical idea of the present invention is to provide a method of forming a metal sintered body that is considerably simpler than the conventional manufacturing technology and can realize great energy savings in the process by using a balance between thermodynamics and kinetics.
- these tasks are exemplary, and the technical spirit of the present invention is not limited thereto.
- the third step is to prevent carbon diffusion into the metal sintered body by carburizing to prevent the formation of carbides of the first metal, the carbide of the second metal is formed in the foil and the third step may include forming an oxide of the second metal in the foil to prevent oxygen from diffusing into the metal sintered body to form an oxide of the first metal.
- the rate at which carbon diffuses in the foil may be lowered after the carbide of the second metal is formed in the third step.
- a carbide of the second metal may be formed at an interface of the foil adjacent to the metal sintered body.
- the mold may include a graphite mold, and the sintering process may include a discharge active sintering process performed in a vacuum chamber having an internal oxygen partial pressure.

- FIG. 10 is a diagram illustrating an Ellingum diagram of Mo, Ta, and W in a method of forming a sintered metal according to an experimental example of the present invention.
- a method of forming a metal sintered body includes a first step of disposing a powder made of a first metal in a mold; a second step of interposing a foil made of a second metal between the powder and the mold; and a third step of forming a metal sintered body from the powder by a sintering process; wherein the second metal has a higher carbon affinity and oxygen affinity than the first metal, and wherein the carbon diffusion coefficient in the carbide of the second metal is lower than the carbon diffusion coefficient in the second metal. do. Furthermore, the carbon diffusion coefficient in the second metal is higher than the carbon diffusion coefficient in the first metal, and the carbon diffusion coefficient in the carbide of the first metal is higher than the carbon diffusion coefficient in the carbide of the second metal. characterized by high.
- the first metal may include tungsten (W)
- the second metal may include tantalum (Ta) or molybdenum (Mo).
- the third step in the method of forming a sintered metal body according to an embodiment of the present invention is to prevent carbon diffusion into the inside of the metal sintered body by carburizing to prevent the formation of carbides of the first metal in the foil. It may include the step of forming a carbide of the metal. That is, the carbide of the second metal is formed in the foil by carburizing in the third step, so that carbon is diffused into the metal sintered body to prevent the carbide of the first metal from being formed.
- the carbide of the second metal may also be formed at an interface of the foil adjacent to the metal sintered body.
- the third step in the method for forming a metal sintered body according to an embodiment of the present invention is to prevent oxygen from diffusing into the metal sintered body to prevent the formation of an oxide of the first metal, the oxide of the second metal in the foil
- This may include the step of forming. That is, the oxide of the second metal is formed in the foil by oxidation in the third step, thereby preventing oxygen from diffusing into the sintered metal and forming the oxide of the first metal.
- the second of the third step After the carbide of the metal is formed since the carbon diffusion coefficient in the carbide of the second metal is lower than the carbon diffusion coefficient in the second metal, the second of the third step After the carbide of the metal is formed, the rate of diffusion of carbon in the foil may be lower. Further, the carbon diffusion coefficient in the carbide of the second metal is lower than the carbon diffusion coefficient in the second metal, so the rate at which carbon in the foil is diffused as more carbides of the second metal are formed in the third step may be lower.
- the mold may include a graphite mold, and the sintering process may include a discharge active sintering process performed in a vacuum chamber having an internal oxygen partial pressure.
- the carburization / oxidation that may occur from the low oxygen partial pressure of the graphite mold and the vacuum chamber is suppressed to produce a material of a metal sintered body.
- impurities C, O
- a balance relation between thermodynamics and kinetics between the tungsten material to be sintered and the metal foil for carburizing/oxidation inhibition etc) can be controlled.
- the metal suitable for use as the carburizing/oxidation inhibiting foil is preferably selected in a range similar to or higher than that of tungsten in thermodynamic stability with carbon/oxygen.
- Elements stably forming carbides and oxides may be selected from groups IVa, Va, and VIa of the periodic table, and considering that the SPS sintering temperature of tungsten is 1600 to 2000°C (1873 to 2273K), the melting point is 2500°C for stable utilization (2773K) or higher, Ta of group Va and Mo and W of group VIa were used as barriers for carburizing/oxidation inhibition.

- FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating the thermodynamic relationship for the compound forming between W, Mo, and Ta and O 2 (g). It is a drawing.
- thermodynamic stability of W and Mo with C (graphite) or O 2 (g) is in the same or similar range compared to that of C (graphite) or O 2 (g) of tungsten powder.
- thermodynamic stability of Ta with C (graphite) or O 2 (g) is more stable than that of tungsten, which is a powder material, with C (graphite) or O 2 (g). That is, it can be understood that Ta has higher carbon affinity and oxygen affinity than tungsten.
- Table 1 shows the carburizing / oxidation inhibiting foil applied to the method for forming a metal sintered body according to an experimental example of the present invention.
- the thickness of the C graphite foil is 250 ⁇ m
- the thickness of the W foil is 25 ⁇ m
- the thickness of the Mo foil is 25 ⁇ m
- the thickness of the Ta foil is 25 ⁇ m.
- FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating a sintering apparatus applied to the method for forming a metal sintered body according to Experimental Example 1 of the present invention
- FIG. 4 is a sintering apparatus applied to the method of forming a metal sintered body according to Experimental Examples 2 to 4 of the present invention.
- SPS discharge active sintering
- Experimental Example 1 is a case where there is no separate barrier for carburizing/oxidation other than C graphite foil
- Experimental Example 2 is a case where the barrier for carburizing/oxidation inhibition is used with the same material as that of a tungsten sintered body
- Experimental Example 3 is a case where there is no barrier for carburizing/oxidation inhibition.
- the inhibitory barrier has thermodynamic stability in a range similar to that of the tungsten sintered body
- Experimental Example 4 is a case where the carburizing/oxidation inhibiting barrier has a higher thermodynamic stability than the tungsten sintered body.
- C graphite foil was applied to all the experimental examples to prevent chemical bonding between the graphite mold and the tungsten material and to easily remove the material when removing it from the graphite mold.
- a discharge active sintering (SPS) process was performed.
- the diffusion of C and O is related to Fick's law, and among the factors of Fick's law, the diffusion coefficient (Diffusivity, D) increases exponentially with temperature, so the traces of internal diffusion of C or O are sintered.
- the tungsten material was manufactured by maintaining the sintering temperature at 1700 to 1900 ° C (1973 to 2173 K) at 1700 to 1900 ° C (1973 to 2173 K) for 10 minutes, respectively, and the pressure at 65 MPa to confirm this expected to appear clearly as the temperature increases, and the microstructure change was observed with SEM.
- the amount of carburization/oxidation generated from the low oxygen partial pressure in the graphite mold or vacuum chamber is very small. Therefore, it is somewhat difficult to quantify the amount of oxygen and carbon in the tungsten sintered body through the corresponding results. Therefore, in this experimental example, the microstructure of the cylindrical surface was observed to find traces of carbon and oxygen diffusion into the W sintered body, and the traces of carbon and oxygen were traced/observed.
- FIG. 5 is a schematic side view of a graphite mold for carbon/oxygen penetration and discharge active sintering (SPS) in the method for forming a metal sintered body according to an experimental example of the present invention, and a cylindrical surface as a microstructure observation area. .
- SPS carbon/oxygen penetration and discharge active sintering
- a powder made of a first metal is placed in a graphite mold, and a foil made of a second metal is interposed between the powder and the graphite mold. to start the configuration.
- SPS discharge active sintering
- the tungsten sintered body to which this technology is applied is manufactured by inhibiting diffusion/inflow into the interior by attracting carbon and oxygen by a metal foil used as a barrier. Therefore, in order to apply this technology, thermodynamic stability and kinetic balance between a metal foil to be used as a barrier and a metal powder to be sintered are very important. Through this embodiment, it can be confirmed that if the relationship between the thermodynamics and kinetics of the material used and the metal foil used as a barrier is utilized, it can be confirmed that the control of impurities is possible effectively.
- FIG. 6 is a result of SEM (BSE mode) analysis of the yellow dotted box (Cylindrical surface) region shown in FIG. 5, and FIGS. 7 and 8 are FE-EPMA quantitative analysis and mapping results in the experimental example of the present invention. will be.
- the W powder becomes W 2 C and the microstructure is realized in the form of growing attached to the W foil.
- Mo foil as a barrier
- the internal diffusion of carbon occurred more deeply than when the W foil was used as the barrier, and the thickness was almost similar to that of the case of using the C foil. From this, it can be confirmed that when Mo foil is used as a barrier, it is not effective in suppressing carburization.
- Ta foil when Ta foil is used, a subsurface due to internal diffusion of carbon is not found, and it can be confirmed that various phases are formed in the Ta foil (point 1, point 2, and point 4 in the Ta foil). In the case of using the Ta foil, it can be confirmed that the Ta foil effectively suppresses the internal diffusion of C as a barrier. It can be seen that the tantalum carbide (Ta 2 C) formed at point 4 in the Ta foil is located at the interface with W and prevents the internal diffusion of carbon from proceeding further.
- Ta 2 C tantalum carbide
- FIG. 9 is a graph illustrating solid solubility of carbon in a method of forming a metal sintered body according to an experimental example of the present invention
- FIG. 10 is Mo, Ta, A diagram illustrating W's Ellingham diagram.
- the present inventors confirmed that the diffusion coefficient of carbon in the metal is in the order Mo>Ta>W, and the diffusion coefficient of carbon in the carbide is Mo>W>Ta.
- Delta G for forming the carbide of FIG. 1 as seen above is confirmed in the order of Ta>Mo>W. That is, the affinity between Ta and C is the best (thermodynamic point of view), and after the carbide (Ta 2 C) is formed, the carbon rate in Ta 2 C is the slowest.
- the Ta foil has a fairly large carbon solid solution so that it can contain more carbon under the same sintering conditions. Therefore, Ta easily forms Ta 2 C, and it is possible to effectively prevent carbon diffusion into the W sintered body.
- Ta has a very high affinity for O in the vacuum degree 10 -5 atm shown in FIG. 10 . It can be confirmed that this aspect appears the same at all vacuum degrees above the degree of vacuum (about 10 -2 atm) during sintering. From this, it can be understood that oxides in Ta are observed, and the presence of the oxides effectively suppresses diffusion of oxygen into the tungsten material. In contrast, no oxygen-rich regions were observed in the other foils. Except for Ta, W and Mo have relatively similar oxygen affinity (O affinity). Therefore, in the case of oxygen (O), even if a barrier exists, it can be understood that diffusion into the tungsten material easily proceeds. For this reason, it can be assumed that the oxygen distribution is uniformly spread to the inside as in the results of EPMA.
- the foil used in the present invention can be selected from groups IVa, Va and VIa of the periodic table that thermodynamically form carbides and oxides well to act as a carburizing/oxidation barrier, and is a foil with higher oxygen and carbon affinity than the material being sintered. can be selected.
- the diffusion coefficient of carbon should be sufficiently small after the formation of carbides in the carburizing inhibiting foil, and that the diffusion of carbon into the sintered body can be minimized when the carbon solid solution of the carburizing inhibiting foil is sufficient.
- the tungsten material When the tungsten material is manufactured using this embodiment, the formation of fine carbides and oxides in the tungsten material is effectively suppressed, and thus it can be used in various fields such as defense weapons, propulsion engines of aircraft rockets, and nuclear fusion.
- the thermodynamic relationship is well utilized in addition to tungsten, it can be applied to sintering of various materials, so that the content of carbon and oxygen can be low.
- the method of forming a metal sintered body can effectively suppress impurities that may be introduced during the process by utilizing thermodynamic and kinetic relationships when manufacturing various materials using the discharge active sintering (SPS) process.

Description

한편, Ta의 C(graphite) 혹은 O

1 | C graphite foil |
2 | C graphite foil + W foil |
3 | C graphite foil + Mo foil |
4 | C graphite foil + Ta foil |
