Description

AN ELASTOMERIC FITTED SHEET AND METHOD THEREOF
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field bed linen, particularly fitted sheet for mattress, or covering sheet assembly. More particularly, it relates to a bedding assembly on a bed with the fitted sheet for the mattress cover which can fit different length, width and depth of the mattress. It also provides a fitted sheet constructed with the elastomeric top panel and side skirts and method thereof.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Various types of bedding materials are used in making bedding for aesthetics, comfort and sleep including sheets, bed skirts, duvet, pillow case, etc. However, the mattress used in home vary in size (i.e., length, width and depth) depends on the manufacturer, depth of the mattress required by the user. Different dimensions of the mattress are available depends on the required comfort level.
Fitted sheets are designed in the convex shape to fit the mattress exactly and hold it in a tightly secured position with the mattress. The fitted sheet has the box shape which consists of top panel which extends over length and width of the mattress, side skirts extends over the depth of the mattress which covers the entire mattress. Edges of the fitted sheet are formed where the top panel and side skirts meet each other. Corners of the fitted sheet are formed where the two side panels meet one another and rest exactly on the corners of the mattress.
To secure the fitted sheet in its position, an elastic material is stitched around the opening of the fitted sheet which will partly wrap around the bottom portion of mattress. If the fitted sheet is too loose, it does not fit the mattress and less likely to hold the mattress firmly. If the fitted sheet is too tight, it holds the mattress very firmly but, the insertion of the fitted sheet in the mattress will be very difficult.
The depth of the fitted sheet is another functional aspect which should meet with depth of the mattress which varies widely from 8 to 20 inches depends on various factors. If the fitted sheet is designed to fit the mattress with lesser depth, it is not possible to use with the higher mattress depth. If the fitted sheet is designed for the higher depth, the same sheet may hold the mattress with lesser depth in such cases the sheet will be superfluous. Control over the excess of length of material becomes too intricate process, since frequent pulling out of the excess fabric may result. In the prior art, a fitted sheet consists of a top panel which forms the top sheet of the mattress, side skirts extends over the depth of the mattress. The fitted sheet forms edges where top panel and side skirt meets each other. Corners of the fitted sheet is cut and stitched where two adjacent side skirts meets each other, thereby it forms as corner which coincides exactly over the corners of the mattress. The free end of the side skirts goes to the bottom of the mattress which is stitched with the elastic band that holds the fitted sheet in its place securely with the mattress. Thereby the fitted sheet forms like a box to hold the mattress tightly and leaves the significant portion of the bottom of the mattress mostly open. The fitted sheet has two long side skirts and two short side skirts which form long side edges and short side edges where the top panel meets the side skirts respectively. The junction point is the point at which the top panel, two adjacent side panels and corner meets each other.
A fitted sheet comprises a top panel, side panel and corner of the fitted sheet, where the side panels are cut and stitched to suit the bed to form a box shape. In general, the top and side panel is produced from inelastic or less elastic material namely, cotton, polyester, viscose, lyocell or its blends, If the size of the bed varies even slightly also, it may create distortion in the fit of the fitted sheet at edges and corners due to the inelasticity of the material.
Hence, the design of the fitted sheet should support the size of the mattress exactly even after repeated washing of the sheet. In most of the cases, the elastic band was provided at the edges of the fitted sheet (or) elastic band was used only at the edges of the fitted sheet (or) partially in the side walls of the fitted sheet (or) throughout the side walls at frequent intervals to hold the fitted sheet with the mattress when the depth of mattress is varied.
The elastic band at frequent interval is useful when the depth of mattress varies from manufacturer and depends on the comfort level to just hold the fitted sheet along variable depth. But the fit of the fitted sheet for the mattress may not be achieved perfectly. For higher depth of mattress, the fitted sheet would be too tight and for lower depth of the mattress the fitted sheet would be loosely fitted in top and sides of the mattress too.
The patent CA2597856 described about the separate / independent elastomeric component attached to the covering component i.e., flat sheet or blanket for providing extra space for the persons who has length of the leg bigger than the size of the bed or to keep the person warm. The present invention specifically describes about the incorporation of elastomeric component in the fitted sheet (which is mentioned as the second component in the referred patent) to improve the snug fit of the fitted sheet to the bed and not the covering component i.e., flat sheet or blanket.
The patent EP2087815B1 describes the use of non-spandex and noncore spun yarns i.e., polyester based bicomponent yarn in the fitted sheet. The limitation of the stretch properties and percentage of recovery after washing and repeated use is not mentioned clearly. But the present invention uses the core spun yarn as the elastomeric yarn and the stretch percentage of the fabric is clearly defined which is 1 to 50 % and above in either one or both the direction of the fabric with the percentage of elastomeric component ranges from only 1 to 20 percent in the whole fabric.
In the patent US7240383B2, The elastomeric yarns are used only on the corner portion of the fitted sheet. The corner portion is knitted and stitched separately to incorporate it as the part of the fitted sheet. In addition to that, the segmented polyurethane component which is responsible for stretch is about 17% of the total weight of the knit segment. But the present invention differs from this patent that the entire sheet fitted sheet is produced from stretch yarns either on one side (warp or weft) or in both the sides and the elastomeric component ranges from 1 to 20 percent in the whole fabric.
In the patent US7487561B2, claim is made to fasten / connect the fitted sheet with flat sheet. An elastomeric component is woven into either flat sheet and the only objective of the elastomeric component at the foot end is to hold the flat and fitted sheet as an assembly. But in the present invention, only the fitted sheet is woven with the elastomeric component throughout the area of the fabric either in warp or weft or both in warp and weft direction and the primary objective of the elastomeric component is to give the snug fit to the fitted sheet with the mattress.
In the patent US20030154748A1, the fabric is knitted using elastomeric and non elastomeric component in the ratio of 0.01% to 10% of the elastomeric material in the fabric. The produced fabric is used to form a fitted sheet. Whereas in the present invention, the fabric is woven using warp and weft yarns which comprises of elastomeric component ranges from 1 to 20% in the total weight of the fabric.
DE2800586A1 In this patent, only warp yarns are woven with elastomeric component and weft yarns are woven from cotton yarn. The percentage of elastomeric component is not clearly mentioned. But in the present invention, either warp yarn or weft yarn or both warp and weft yarns are produced from elastomeric component. The stretch percentage of the fabric is clearly defined which is 1 to 20 % and above.
In the patent JP2016507669, production and application of stretch yarns from different material including core spun spandex yarn and their respective fabric properties are discussed in detail. But in the present invention, explains the incorporation elastomeric yarns to produce fitted sheet for bedding and to improve the snug fit is discussed.
EP3020856A1 this patent describes about the circular knitted fabric meant for apparel applications, whereas the present invention explains the incorporation of elastomeric component in woven fabric meant for fitted sheet.
This Patent US6199231B1 describes the incorporation of elastomeric component in production of knitted fabric. Whereas the present invention uses the elastomeric component is incorporated to produce the woven fabric which has 1 to 20% of the elastomeric component in the total weight of fabric and shows the stretch percentage of 1 to 20% and above.
The patent US20070707496A1 described about the separate / independent elastomeric component attached to the covering component i.e., flat sheet at the foot end and the purpose being to hold the flat sheet stable in its position during the change of sleeping position of the person. The present invention specifically describes about the incorporation of elastomeric component in the fitted sheet (which is mentioned as the second component in the referred patent) to improve the snug fit of the fitted sheet to the bed and not the covering component i.e., flat sheet.
The patent EP2937453A1 describes the incorporation of elastomeric component in the warp knitted fabric meant for any application. In present invention, elastomeric component is incorporated to produce woven fabric in which the elastomeric component can be used either in warp direction or weft direction or in both directions. The percentage of elastomeric component ranges from 1 to 20% and stretch percentage of fabric ranges from 1 to 50% and above.
Accordingly, there exists a need for a fitted sheet that can hold range of dimensions of the mattress tightly. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of bed linen. Particularly to fitted sheets for mattress. It discloses in various embodiments bedding assembly on a bed with the fitted sheet for mattress cover which can fit different length, width and depth of the mattress. More particularly, it provides an elastomeric fitted sheet constructed / woven with elastomeric component which forms throughout the fabric area. As discussed there is no single fitted sheet that can fit mattresses of variable dimensions. The invention discloses an elastomeric fitted sheet that can fit mattresses of different dimensions, length, width and depth. The fitted sheet of the present invention is configured to fit mattresses of depth range 6-20 inches. The fitted sheet is woven with elastomeric component either in one direction either warp or weft or in both warp and weft direction which can fit any length, width and depth of the mattress within the given range with perfect snug fit; The fitted sheet is constructed or woven and comprises of top panel which forms the top sheet of the mattress and side skirts which extends to the depth of the mattress.
According to the main aspect of the present invention, the elastomeric yarn is produced from core spun yarn using spandex / lycra or any other elastomeric component (or) the yarn may be a conventional ring spun yarn with the blend of elastomeric component (or) the yarn may be in the form of filament which has stretch property in its polymer. The core spun or conventional ring spun blended yarn may consist of 1 % to 20% of spandex / lycra / any other elastomeric component in it. The filament may be produced from spandex / lycra / nylon / any other polymer which consist of stretch properties.
The percentage of elastomeric component ranges from 1 to 20% and stretch percentage of fabric ranges from 1 to 50% and above.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, the fabric produced from the above said yarn consists of 50 to 500 ends per inch (number of yarns per inch in warp direction), 50 to 500 picks per inch (number of yarns per inch in weft direction), 100 to 1000 TC (total number of yarns per square inch).
The fabric produced according to the main aspect of the present invention may undergo shrinkage of 1 % to 50% in lengthwise or in width wise or in both the direction during wet processing of the fabric namely, desizing, scouring, bleaching, dyeing of the fabric, etc. Thus, the number of threads per unit length i.e., or both may increase by 2% to 100% from weaving / on loom stage to the fabric after finishing in wet processing stage. The produced fabric may have the ability to show 1% to 50% stretch during its usage at fitted sheet. The produced fabric may show 80% to 100% stretch recovery in its original form or after repeated washing.
Fig. 1 illustrates, a fitted sheet [70] shows the top panel [71] and side panel [72] and corner of the fitted sheet [16], where the side panels are cut and stitched to suit the bed to form a box shape. The component consist of elastomeric material is used to produce the entire top panel [71] and side panels [72] i.e., entire fitted sheet [70], thereby; the fitted sheet can fit to any dimension of the mattress within the given range. The elastomeric component is either woven in weft direction or warps direction or both weft and warp directions. The fitted sheet [70] forms edges [14].
Fig. 4 illustrates, shows the fitted sheet [70], top panel [71], side panel [72], long side panel [22], short side panel [24], long side edge [26], short side edge [27], corner [16], junction [20], elastic bands [42] and [44] or gripper bands [52] and [54] are shown in detail. The gripper component is different from elastic band where the frictional coefficient of gripper is higher than the frictional coefficient of elastic band, which helps to hold the fitted sheet securely in its place. A pair of elastic band [42] and [44] or gripper [52] and [54] is attached either only in the corner or with partially in top, bottom and side panels or throughout the circumference of the fitted sheet [70]. The first set of elastic band [42, 44] or gripper [52, 54] is attached to the corner where one long side panel and one short side panel meets each other or throughout the top and bottom portion of the fitted sheet [Figure 14] and partially in the side panels [Figure 8]. The first set of elastic band [42] or gripper [52] is stitched 6 to 14 inch below the junction or edges [20] and second set of elastic band or gripper component (frictional material) may be stitched 8 to 16 inch from the junction or edges and the third elastic band is secured at the free edge of the fitted sheet throughout the circumference. The elastic band is attached to the length of 1 to 20 inch in its normal state i.e., unstretched state in each side panel, and can be extended almost to the double the original length in each side panel of the fitted sheet. The height or depth of the elastic band or gripper may vary from 5 mm to 25 mm. Similar elastic band [44] or gripper [54] is placed few inches (0.5 inch to 4 inches) below the first elastic band [42] or gripper [54] i.e., at the depth of 6 to 15 inches from the junction [20] of the fitted sheet corner. In addition, an elastic band [40] is secured throughout the free edge of the fitted sheet [70], which is few more inch below the depth from the second elastic band or gripper, i.e., at the free edges of the fitted sheet.
Fig. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 illustrates the side view of the fitted sheet [70], in which one of the longer side skirt is visible with elastic bands [42] or gripper [52,54] attached at the inner side of the fitted sheet is illustrated which covers the different depth of mattress i.e., Fig. 7 and Fig. 13 depicts the fitted sheet [70] covers the mattress with very less depth (example 10 inches depth or less), in which the first set of elastic band [42] or gripper [52] is used to secure the fitted sheet firmly with the mattress in its place at all the four corners, during which successive elastic bands [44] and [40] or gripper [54] also goes below the mattress and partially covers the bottom of the mattress, thereby it is not visible in the side view. Fig. 8 and Fig. 14 illustrates the side view of fitted sheet [70] covering the mattress with slightly higher depth than the previous case, (example 12 inch depth or less) during which, the first set of elastic band [42] or gripper [52] will just partially coincide the bottom junction of the mattress and will help to hold the fitted sheet securely in its place, thereby, it is partially visible in side view. The second set of elastic band [44] or gripper [54] will help to further secure the fitted sheet by partially covering the bottom portion of the mattress, thereby, it will not be visible in side view. Similarly, Fig. 9 and Fig. 15 shows the fitted sheet where the second set elastic band [44] or gripper [54] is visible in which the fitted sheet [70] hold the mattress with the depth lesser than 16 inches. If the mattress depth increases further, the elastic band [40] sewn at the free end of the fitted sheet will help to secure the fitted sheet [70] along with the mattress tightly (Fig. 8 and Fig. 12).
Cutting method:
An embodiment of the present invention discloses a method of cutting the woven elastomeric fitted sheet fabric to construct or design the fitted sheet of the present invention. This method addresses critical problems of loss of snug fit with the existing fitted sheets disclosed either in the prior art or marketed as consumer products.
The problem associated with the existing prior art cutting method is that if the elastomeric yarn is used in the fitted sheet, the yarn tends to shrink and contract in length when it is washed with water. If the fitted sheet is cut using existing prior regular method, then the fabric in all the four corners will be held firmly and the fabric in the middle will tend to form concave shape which exposes the mattress outside and the fitted sheet does not serve its functional property.
Hence, the new method of cutting is proposed in which the drop [22 or 24] (Figure 19 and Figure 20) or both is cut in convex shape depends on the direction of elastomeric yarn used in the fabric. For example, if the elastomeric yarn is used in the length direction, then the convex shape is cut in length direction, if the elastomeric yarn is used in width wise direction, then the convex shape is cut in the width direction. If the elastomeric yarn is used in both the direction, then the convex shape will be cut in both length and width wise direction. The height of the convex shape can vary from 0.5 inch to 20 inch. For example, if the height of drop D (Figure 19 and 20) is 16 inches, then the convex cut in middle of the drop can vary from 16.5 to 36.5 inches.
The cutting method is further described in reference to Figure 19 for cutting method if the elastomeric yarn is in lengthwise direction, Figure 20 illustrating cutting method if the elastomeric width wise direction, Figure 21 illustrating cutting method if the elastomeric yarn is in warp and weft in both directions. The fitted sheet comprises of side panel, wherein the panel across the length side is (24L’ and 24L) and panel across the width side is (22’ and 22W); convex shape is cut on the side panel (24L’) such that the height of the sides (sloping edge) D is difference of (X-d) which and height of the side D is a difference of (X-d) ranges from 16.5 to 36 inches and the height of the convex varies between the range 0.5 inch and 20 inch, wherein X is the distance of the point of intersection (O) of side (14), free end of side skirt of short panel [24] extension to meet the line from the centre (O) of the convex shape with the line of extension of the skirt [12] of the long side panel or drop [22], free end [15]. In another embodiment the drop 24 is the cut in side panel on the length side, where as illustrated in Figure 20, the convex shape is cut on the side panel [22], wherein the convex is formed.
