Description

Illuminated display and a method for production thereof
Field of Invention
The invention relates to an illuminated display, such as an advertising illuminated display, a traffic sign or the like and to the process for the production of an illuminated display.
Prior art
Illuminated displays are known from prior art, which have a housing made of a cast perimeter frame made of plastic, which is closed by a front and rear covers. Such a solution is known from patent application US5964051A1. A disadvantage of the known solution lies in that it is necessary to make a separate mould for each dimension and shape of the display, which greatly increases the production cost of the display. Such a solution is particularly unsuitable for small-scale production.
Said disadvantage is partly overcome by a solution known from patent application US4267657A. The application discloses an illuminated display, the circumference of which consists of separate, interconnected sides. The sides are cut to the desired length and interconnected, thus achieving flexibility in terms of dimensional requirements without the need for specially designed tools for different dimensions. A disadvantage of the solution is the large number of components, which results in a longer assembly time of the display. A further disadvantage is the large number of joints between the components and thus potentially poorer sealing of the display housing. Another disadvantage is that the components must be manufactured in relatively narrow tolerances. Technical problem
The technical problem is how to provide an illuminated display with few components, which will be well sealed to the exterior and whose production will be cost-effective and will allow for flexibility in terms of design and dimensions.
Solution to the technical problem
The relative expressions such as below, above etc. are defined with respect to the illuminated display when in use.
The technical problem is solved by an illuminated display comprising a frame of the illuminated display, a first and a second panel of the illuminated display, each closing the frame of the illuminated display from a respective side, and at least one light source arranged in the interior of the illuminated display, wherein the frame of the illuminated display is formed of an extruded profile strip which is at least in sections bent so as to form a closed shape, the ends of the profile strip being interconnected, wherein the profile strip has a flat base when viewed in the longitudinal direction, at the first end of which, at the outmost edge, a first protrusion extends substantially perpendicular to the base, and a second protrusion extends at a distance from said first protrusion, wherein the first panel of the illuminated display is fixedly arranged in a way to rest against the first protrusion from the interior of the frame of the illuminated display, and the space between the first panel of the illuminated display or the first protrusion of the profile strip on one side and the second protrusion of the profile strip on the other side is filled with a sealing material, and wherein the second panel is formed as a removable cover. The technical problem is further solved by an illuminated display comprising a frame of the illuminated display, a first and a second panel of the illuminated display, each closing the frame of the illuminated display from a respective side, and at least one light source arranged in the interior of the illuminated display, wherein the frame of the illuminated display is formed of two extruded profile strips which are at least in sections bent so as to jointly form a closed shape, the ends of both profile strips being interconnected, wherein the profile strips have a flat base when viewed in the longitudinal direction, at the first end of which, at the outmost edge, a first protrusion extends substantially perpendicular to the base, and a second protrusion extends at a distance from said first protrusion, wherein the first panel of the illuminated display is fixedly arranged in a way to rest against the first protrusion from the interior of the frame of the illuminated display, and the space between the first panel of the illuminated display or the first protrusion of the profile strip on one side and the second protrusion of the profile strip on the other side is filled with a sealing material, and wherein the second panel is formed as a removable cover.
Preferably, the pieces of the bent profile strips are mirror- symmetrical, so that they each form essentially one half of the closed shape.
A disadvantage of this embodiment is a larger number of components, while the advantage is the easier handling of the pieces of profile strips in subsequent production processes, such as painting and in transport and storage, especially when it comes to larger dimensions.
A method for production of an illuminated display comprising the steps of: providing a) an extruded profile strip, or b) two extruded profile strips, wherein each profile strip has, when viewed in the longitudinal direction, a flat base, at the first end of which, at the outmost edge, a first protrusion extends substantially perpendicular to the base, and a second protrusion extends at a distance from said first protrusion, bending, at least in sections a) of the profile strip such that the profile strip forms a closed shape or b) two profile strips such that the assembled profile strip jointly form a closed shape, arranging the first panel of the illuminated display into the bent profile strip or into a pair of profile strips so that it is arranged between the first and second protrusions of the profile strip, interconnecting the ends of the profile strip or a pair of profile strips, filling the space between the first panel of the illuminated display or the first protrusion of the profile strip on one side and the second protrusion of the profile strip on the other side, while simultaneously pressing the front panel of the illuminated display against the first protrusion of the profile strip, mounting the second panel of the illuminated display in a detachable manner.
An advantage of the illuminated display according to the invention over known displays is in the smaller number of components and good sealing of the housing. The method of production of the illuminated display according to the invention allows for cost-effective production and flexibility in terms of design and dimensions adapted to market requirements.

The invention is described in more detail in the following.
The technical problem is solved by an illuminated display 1 comprising a frame 2 of the illuminated display, a first 3 and a second 4 panel of the illuminated display, each closing the frame 2 of the illuminated display from a respective side, and at least one light source arranged in the interior of the illuminated display, wherein the frame of the illuminated display is formed of an extruded profile strip 5 which is at least in sections bent so as to form a closed shape, the ends of the profile strip being interconnected, wherein the profile strip has a flat base 5a when viewed in the longitudinal direction, at the first end of which, at the outmost edge, a first protrusion 5b extends substantially perpendicular to the base, and a second protrusion 5c extends at a distance from said first protrusion, wherein the first panel 3 of the illuminated display is fixedly arranged in a way to rest against the first protrusion 5b from the interior of the frame of the illuminated display, and the space between the first panel 3 of the illuminated display or the first protrusion 5b of the profile strip on one side and the second protrusion 5c of the profile strip on the other side is filled with a sealing material 13, and wherein the second panel 4 is formed as a removable cover.
The interconnection of the ends of the profile strip is preferably formed on the underside of the illuminated display. This makes the connection less exposed to the effects of rainwater, as well as for aesthetic reasons.
Preferably, the pieces of the bent profile strips are mirror- symmetrical, so that they each form one half of the closed shape.
A disadvantage of this embodiment is a larger number of components, while the advantage is the easier handling of the pieces of profile strips in subsequent production processes, such as painting and in transport and storage, especially when it comes to larger dimensions.
The extruded profile strip is made of plastic or metal, especially aluminium. The first and/or second panel of the illuminated display is at least partially formed of a transparent or translucent material, such as polymethyl methacrylate (acrylic glass), polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate glycol, glass and the like.
The ends of the profile strip are interconnected by means of a connecting element 6, by gluing or welding.
The connecting element may be formed of flat sheet metal. Preferably, the connecting element has an L-shaped cross-section in order to provide for greater mechanical strength and stiffness of the joint. A further advantage of using an L-shaped connecting element is that it provides a more precise alignment of the free ends of the profile strip and thus an easier and faster connection process. The connecting element is connected to the free ends of the profile strip by at least two first screws 7. In the case of a connection to the connecting element, a gap 8 between the free ends of the profile strip can be filled with a sealing material to ensure a better sealing of the frame of the illuminated display towards the environment.
At the other end of the flat base of the profile strip, a third protrusion 5d is integrally moulded on the flat base 5a for attaching the removable second panel 4 to the frame of the illuminated display. The second plate can be fastened by means of third screws 14, a first seal 10 being arranged between the third protrusion 5d and the second panel 4.
In a second, preferred embodiment, a fourth L-shaped projection 5e is formed at the other end of the flat base 5a of the profile strip at a distance from the outmost edge, one arm of the L being arranged substantially perpendicular to the flat base 5a and the other arm protruding in direction towards the other end of the flat base from the first arm parallel to and away from the flat base. On the other arm of the fourth protrusion, a profile seal 9 made of rubber or other elastic material is arranged, against which a removable second panel of the illuminated display rests. The detachable second panel is attached to the frame of the illuminated display on at least two opposite edges. It is fastened at one edge by means of at least one pin, hinge or lock 11 with a latch, and at the other edge preferably by means of at least one lock with a latch, the latch 11a in the locked state of the lock engaging the first arm of the fourth protrusion. In this way, a good sealing of the second panel 4 is achieved and unauthorized access to the interior of the illuminated display is prevented.
The second panel 4 can be formed with a bent edge 4a to increase its stiffness.
The flat base 5a of the profile strip may be provided on the outside with first longitudinal grooves 5f. The grooves serve to facilitate the drainage of rainwater from the frame of the illuminated display, and at the same time have an aesthetic function.
The profile strip 5 may further comprise a plurality of fifth protrusions 5g extending perpendicular to the flat base 5a of the profile strip to secure the light source and any other components with second screws 12.
A sealing material 13 prevents the ingress of water and dust into the interior of the illuminated display. Silicone or other elastic sealing material may be used as the sealing material. The elasticity of the selected sealing material is especially important in the case where the frame and the first panel are made of different materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion. When the temperature changes, the frame and the first panel will expand or shrink differently, which will cause the contact surfaces to slip. Adequate elasticity of the sealant thus ensures adaptation to various deformations of said assembled parts.
The profile strip may comprise a second longitudinal groove 5h, preferably arranged in the area of the angle formed by the flat base 5a and the first protrusion 5b of the profile strip, which serves to improve the sealing of the joint of the permanently attached first panel 3 and on the frame 2. A method for production of an illuminated display comprising the steps of:
- providing a) an extruded profile strip 5, or b) two extruded profile strips, wherein each profile strip has, when viewed in the longitudinal direction, a flat base, at the first end of which, at the outmost edge, a first protrusion extends substantially perpendicular to the base, and a second protrusion extends at a distance from said first protrusion,
- bending, at least in sections a) of the profile strip such that the profile strip forms a closed shape or b) two profile strips such that the assembled profile strip jointly form a closed shape,
- arranging the first panel of the illuminated display into the bent profile strip or into a pair of profile strips so that it is arranged between the first and second protrusions of the profile strip,
- interconnecting the ends of the profile strip or a pair of profile strips,
- filling the space between the first panel of the illuminated display or the first protrusion of the profile strip on one side and the second protrusion of the profile strip on the other side, while simultaneously pressing the front panel of the illuminated display against the first protrusion of the profile strip,
- arranging the second panel of the illuminated display in a detachable manner.
The profile strip can be bent continuously along the entire length of the strip to obtain a round shape of the frame. It can be bent in at least three spots to obtain a polygonal frame shape, such as a triangular, quadrangular, hexagonal, octagonal shape. It is also possible to use a combination of both ways of bending the profile strip.
In the case of polygonal shapes of the frame 2, corners 2a of the frame have a rounded shape with a final radius of curvature. The desired radius of curvature of the corner 2a or the entire profile strip in the case of a round frame shape is achieved by bending the profile strip 5 over a cylinder or similar element of the corresponding radius. A profile strip of metal is bent only by mechanical bending, while a plastic profile strip is also heat-treated while being mechanically bent.
When placing the front panel of the illuminated display in the frame of the illuminated display, the profile strip which is already bent into a closed shape, is slightly spaced apart. However, the free ends of the profile strip are interconnected only after the front panel of the illuminated display has already been inserted into the frame.
