Abstract
The invention relates to catalysts for use in the hydroprocessing of heavy oil feedstock and residues. The guard bed layer catalyst is aluminium oxide containing macropores that form a three-dimensional structure, wherein the proportion of macropores with a size in the range of from 50 nm to 15 μm constitutes at least 30% of the total specific pore volume of said catalyst. Due to improved textural properties, the proposed guard bed catalyst for use in processing heavy oil feedstock is a structured catalyst having a high capacity for metals, coke and silicon, high stability and catalytic activity, and lowered requirements with respect to the viscosity and macromolecule content of the feedstock.
