Abstract

Suggested is the use of at least one 1,2-alkane diol as an anti-foaming agent in cosmetic compositions.

Description

USE OF 1,2-ALKANE DIOLS
FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] The present invention refers to the area of cosmetics and to the use of 1,2-alkane diols as an anti-foaming agent. Further it refers to cosmetic compositions comprising 1,2-alkane diols and their specific applications.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Cosmetic compositions often contain substances, which, for example when applied to the skin, have a strong foaming effect. The foaming in general occurs during the spreading of the cosmetic composition on the skin or hair. This may of course be beneficial in some applications, such as for example in shower gels or shampoos. However, in applications such as, for example, in a cream, lotion or aqueous solution, foaming behavior is not desirable.
[0003] There a known substances, for example silicones + ethanol, which can reduce the foaming behavior of cosmetic compositions during distribution on the skin. However, the application of silicones in cosmetics is still under considerable debate. Silicones in general replace high-quality vegetable oils, making them a cost-effective alternative for the industry. However, another critical issue is the environmental impact of silicones. As synthetic products, they are difficult to break down in nature. With cosmetics, however, tons of silicones are flushed into the sewage and thus into the environment.
[0004] Another issue is that especially in natural formulas, silicones are not allowed to use, because of their synthetic origin. Since years, the cosmetic industry is looking for other substances, which can act as anti-foaming agents and replace silicones in cosmetic compositions.
[0005] Therefore it was an object of the present invention to provide an anti-foaming agent, which can be used in natural formulas and which can replace silicones in cosmetic compositions.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0006] A first object of the present invention refers to the use of at least one 1,2-alkane diol as an anti-foaming agent in cosmetic compositions.
[0007] The inventors have surprisingly found that 1,2-alkane diols show a great anti-foaming effect when used in cosmetic compositions. In a preferred embodiment according to the invention, the at least one 1,2-alkane diol has a chain length of from 5 to 12 carbon atoms.
1.2-alkanediols according to the present invention encompass particularly 1,2-pentanediol,
1.2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, 1,2-decanediol, 1,2-dodecanediol and their mixtures. In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention, the 1,2-alkane diol is selected from 1,2-pentanediol glycol or 1,2-hexanediol.
[0008] According to the invention, an "anti-foaming agent", as previously explained above, is a substance which can reduce the foaming behavior of cosmetic compositions during distribution on the skin. The terms "foaming" and "soaping" can be used synonymously in the context of the invention.
[0009] In one embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 % per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition. In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.2 to 8% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition. In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0,5 to 5% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
[0010] In one embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition is selected from the group consisting of an emulsion, a mousse, a spray or a lotion. In an especially preferred embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition is a sunscreen lotion or color cosmetics. Color cosmetics in the sense of the present invention is to be understood as cosmetic with some color pigments, for example face make-up, as foundation, blushers, illuminators, face bronzing lotions, creams and powders, loose and pressed powders, mineral powders; Eye make-up, as eye shadows, eyeliners, eyebrow pencils, kohl and mascara, mineral powders; Lip make-up, as lipstick, lip glosses, lip pencils, lip plumpers, pots and palettes; Nail make-up, as nail varnishes and polishes, hardeners and strengtheners, base and top coat.
[0011 ] In a further embodiment the formulation of this invention is an aqueous solution e.g. a toner, facial water, body freshener or an eau de toilette/eau de parfume with low or no content of ethanol. In these formulation types solubilizers are used for incorporating/presolving lipophilic ingredients to achieve a clear solution. The solubilizers lead to a foaming behavior during application if no or low contents (0-5%) of ethanol are included due to ethanol acts as foaming inhibitor. Therefore it's a challenge to formulate low foaming formulations without or low content of ethanol. The addition of 1,2 alkanediols, especially 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol can reduce or avoid the foaming behaviour.
[0012] COSMETIC COMPOSITION
[0013] Another object of the present invention encompasses a cosmetic composition, comprising
(a) at least one 1,2-alkane diol;
(b) inorganics;
(c) water; and optionally
(d) emulsifier; (e) essential oils; and
(f) thickener,
wherein the cosmetic composition is free of silicones (polysiloxane).
[0014] In one embodiment according to the invention, the cosmetic composition is an aqueous solution. In another embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition is an emulsion.
[0015] In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition comprises
(a) at least one 1,2-alkane diol;
(b) inorganics;
(c) water;
(d) emulsifier; and optionally
(e) essential oils; and
(f) thickener,
wherein the cosmetic composition is free of silicones (polysiloxane).

Silicones, more precisely siloxanes, or more precisely, organo-substituted polysiloxanes, are linear or cyclic polymers of monomeric silicon/oxygen monomers.
The polymeric backbone is made up of alternating silicon and oxygen atoms. The silicon atoms may carry a wide variety of substituents which can be the same or different. The chemically least reactive substituents are the methyl or phenyl groups:

[0019] This group includes mined materials, various inorganic gases, liquids, or solids, some elemental substances, and inorganic oxides. Excluded are all substances which are classified as Inorganic Salts, Inorganic Acids or Inorganic Bases. In the sense of the present invention, inorganics are chemically inert under conditions of cosmetic use. Some of them are used as pigments (e.g., Titanium Dioxide, Ultramarines, and Iron Oxides), while others are fillers, abrasives and smoothing agents (e.g., Kaolin, Talc, and Silica). The gaseous materials are used as propellants (e.g., Nitrogen). The clay-type materials (e.g., Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Hectorite, and Montmorillonite) are used to increase the viscosity of aqueous suspensions. Hydrogen Peroxide is an important oxidizing agent which is used in cosmetics for hair bleaching and as a neutralizer in hair waving products, and to a lesser extent in oral care products. [0022] EMULSIFIER
[0023] According to the invention suitable emulsifiers are for example:
• products of the addition of 2 to 30 mol ethylene oxide and/or 0 to 5 mol propylene oxide onto linear Cs-22 fatty alcohols, onto C12-22 fatty acids and onto alkyl phenols containing 8 to 15 carbon atoms in the alkyl group;
• C12/18 fatty acid monoesters and diesters of addition products of 1 to 30 mol ethylene oxide onto glycerol;
• glycerol mono- and diesters and sorbitan mono- and diesters of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids containing 6 to 22 carbon atoms and ethylene oxide addition products thereof;
• addition products of 15 to 60 mol ethylene oxide onto castor oil and/or hydrogenated castor oil;
• polyol esters and, in particular, polyglycerol esters such as, for example, polyglycerol polyricinoleate, polyglycerol poly-12-hydroxystearate or polyglycerol dimerate isostearate. Mixtures of compounds from several of these classes are also suitable;
• addition products of 2 to 15 mol ethylene oxide onto castor oil and/or hydrogenated castor oil;
• partial esters based on linear, branched, unsaturated or saturated C6/22 fatty acids, ricinoleic acid and 12-hydroxystearic acid and glycerol, polyglycerol, pentaerythritol, - dipentaerythritol, sugar alcohols (for example sorbitol), alkyl glucosides (for example methyl glucoside, butyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside) and polyglucosides (for example cellulose); • mono-, di and trialkyl phosphates and mono-, di- and/or tri-PEG-alkyl phosphates and salts thereof;
• wool wax alcohols;
• polysiloxane/polyalkyl polyether copolymers and corresponding derivatives;
• mixed esters of pentaerythritol, fatty acids, citric acid and fatty alcohol and/or mixed esters of C -22 fatty acids, methyl glucose and polyols, preferably glycerol or polyglycerol,
• polyalkylene glycols and
• glycerol carbonate.
[0024] The addition products of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide onto fatty alcohols, fatty acids, alkylphenols, glycerol mono- and diesters and sorbitan mono- and diesters of fatty acids or onto castor oil are known commercially available products. They are homologue mixtures of which the average degree of alkoxylation corresponds to the ratio between the quantities of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide and substrate with which the addition reaction is carried out. Cn/is fatty acid monoesters and diesters of addition products of ethylene oxide onto glycerol are known as lipid layer enhancers for cosmetic formulations. The preferred emulsifiers are described in more detail as follows:
[0025] Partial glycerides. Typical examples of suitable partial glycerides are hydroxystearic acid monoglyceride, hydroxystearic acid diglyceride, isostearic acid monoglyceride, isostearic acid diglyceride, oleic acid monoglyceride, oleic acid diglyceride, ricinoleic acid monoglyceride, ricinoleic acid diglyceride, linoleic acid monoglyceride, linoleic acid diglyceride, linolenic acid monoglyceride, linolenic acid diglyceride, erucic acid monoglyceride, erucic acid diglyceride, tartaric acid monoglyceride, tartaric acid diglyceride, citric acid monoglyceride, citric acid diglyceride, malic acid monoglyceride, malic acid diglyceride and technical mixtures thereof which may still contain small quantities of triglyceride from the production process. Addition products of 1 to 30 and preferably 5 to 10 mol ethylene oxide onto the partial glycerides mentioned are also suitable.

Suitable sorbitan esters are sorbitan monoisostearate, sorbitan sesquiisostearate, sorbitan diisostearate, sorbitan triisostearate, sorbitan monooleate, sorbitan sesquioleate, sorbitan dioleate, sorbitan trioleate, sorbitan monoerucate, sorbitan sesquierucate, sorbitan dierucate, sorbitan trierucate, sorbitan monoricinoleate, sorbitan sesquiricinoleate, sorbitan diricinoleate, sorbitan triricinoleate, sorbitan monohydroxystearate, sorbitan sesquihydroxystearate, sorbitan dihydroxystearate, sorbitan trihydroxystearate, sorbitan monotartrate, sorbitan sesquitartrate, sorbitan ditartrate, sorbitan tritartrate, sorbitan monocitrate, sorbitan sesquicitrate, sorbitan dicitrate, sorbitan tricitrate, sorbitan monomaleate, sorbitan sesquimaleate, sorbitan dimaleate, sorbitan trimaleate and technical mixtures thereof. Addition products of 1 to 30 and preferably 5 to 10 mol ethylene oxide onto the sorbitan esters mentioned are also suitable.

Typical examples of suitable polyglycerol esters are Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate (Dehymuls® PGPH), Polyglycerin-3-Diisostearate (Lameform® TGI), Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate (Isolan® Gl 34), Polyglyceryl-3 Oleate, Diisostearoyl Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate (Isolan® PDI), Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate (Tego Care® 450), Polyglyceryl-3 Beeswax (Cera Beilina®), Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate (Polyglycerol Caprate T2010/90), Polyglyceryl-3 Cetyl Ether (Chimexane® NL), Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate (Cremophor® GS 32) and Polyglyceryl Polyricinoleate (Admul® WOL 1403), Polyglyceryl Dimerate Isostearate and mixtures thereof. Examples of other suitable polyolesters are the mono-, di- and triesters of trimethylol propane or pentaerythritol with lauric acid, cocofatty acid, tallow fatty acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, behenic acid and the like optionally reacted with 1 to 30 mol ethylene oxide.
[0028] Anionic emulsifiers. Typical anionic emulsifiers are aliphatic C12-22 fatty acids, such as palmitic acid, stearic acid or behenic acid for example, and C12-22 dicarboxylic acids, such as azelaic acid or sebacic acid for example.
[0029] Amphoteric emulsifiers. Other suitable emulsifiers are amphboteric or zwitterionic surfactants. [0043] The cosmetic composition according to the invention can further comprise wetting agents. Wetting agents in general have multifunctional properties which are connected to their amphiphilic molecular structure, consisting of a polar, hydrophilic and a non-polar, hydrophobic part. This structure allows the wetting agents to gravitate towards the interphase of a bi-phase system and there to lower the interfacial tension.
[0044] Suitable wetting agents are for example, glyceryl caprylate, glyceryl caprate, caprylyl glycol or sodium lauroyl lactylate.
[0045] In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol, which is part of the cosmetic composition, is selected from 1,2-pentylene glycol or 1,2- hexanediol.
[0046] In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2- alkane diol is added in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 % per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
[0047] In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention, the cosmetic composition is an emulsion or a sunscreen lotion or color cosmetics.
[0048] In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention said emulsions exhibit an average particle size, where • 10 Vol.-% show a diameter of less than 2 miti (preferably less than 0.5 pm) (DIO value),
• 50 Vol.-% show a diameter of less than 10 pm (preferably less than 5 pm) (D50 value) and
• 90 Vol.-% show a diameter of less than 15 pm (preferably less than 12 pm) (D90 value).
[0049] The particle size of emulsions can be determined using a Mastersizer Micro MAF 500 (Malvern), for example and using the principle of laser diffraction. For example, the D10 value in the sense of the present invention means that in a preferred embodiment according to the invention 10 % of the particles show a particle size less than 2 pm. The D50 value in the sense of the present invention means that in a preferred embodiment according to the invention 50 % of the particles show a particle size less than 10 pm. The D90 value in the sense of the present invention means that in a preferred embodiment according to the invention 90 % of the particles show a particle size less than 15 pm.
[0050] Of course also other compounds which are suitable for cosmetic compositions and which are not mentioned expressly, can be part of the cosmetic composition according to the present invention.
[0051] METHOD
[0052] Another object of the present invention is a method for reducing the foaming of a cosmetic composition, wherein at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used as an anti-foaming agent.
[0053] In a preferred embodiment according to the method of the invention, the at least one 1,2-alkane diol has a chain length of from 5 to 12 carbon atoms. In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention, the 1,2-alkane diol is selected from 1,2-pentanediol or 1,2-hexanediol.
[0054] In one embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 % per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition. In a preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.2 to 8% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition. In a further preferred embodiment according to the invention the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0,5 to 5% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
[0055] In one embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition is selected from the group consisting of an emulsion, a mousse, a spray or a lotion. In an especially preferred embodiment according to the invention the cosmetic composition is a sunscreen lotion or color cosmetics.
[0056] In a preferred embodiment according to the method of the present invention, the cosmetic composition is free of silicones.

EXAMPLES
[0058] Production method of the cosmetic composition according to the invention
[0059] Pre-disperse Zinc Oxide and 1,2-pentanediol or 1,2-hexanediol in all liquid ingredients of phase A(Liquid ingredients of phase A: Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Octocrylene, Homosalate) and homogenize for 1 min by using an Ultra Turrax Stirrer (6000 rpm). Add the remaining ingredients of phase A and heat up to approx 85°C. (without Xanthan Gum). Add Xanthan Gum and homogenize for 1 min (6000rpm/min). Heat phase B up to approx. 80°C.
[0060] Add phase B to A and homogenize by using an ultra turrx stirrer for 2 min at 6000 rpm. Cool down while stirring with a vane stirrer to 40°C (50 RPM /15 min). The pH value of the finished product should be approx. 5, 8-6,0 and has to be checked.
[0061] Table 1 shows cosmetic compositions according to the invention (B and C). Composition A is placebo and D and E are for comparison.

[0062] As mentioned above, a pre-dispersion of Zinc Oxide was produced before emulsification step: Therefore the ingredients as listed by weight in Table 2 were weighed in. Each blend was homogenized for 1 min by using an ulktra turrax stirrer (6000 rpm).
[0063] Table 2 shows the ingredienst of the pre-dispersion. Composition B1 and Cl are according to the invention, composition A1 is placebo and composition D1 and El are for comparison.

[0065] lg of emulsion A-D was distributed onto the skin of the forearm in a circular motion for 30 seconds. Images were taken directly after distribution.
[0066] Fig. 1 shows on the left forearm composition B, containing 3% per weight 1,2 pentylene glycol. For comparison, the right forearm was distributed with composition A, containing no 1,2-alkane diol. It can be clearly seen that the left forearm shows less foaming effect in comparison to placebo.
[0067] Fig. 2 shows on the left forearm composition C, containing 1% per weight 1,2 hexanediol. For comparison, the right forearm was distributed with composition A, containing no 1,2-alkane diol. It can be clearly seen that the left forearm shows less foaming effect in comparison to placebo.
[0068] Fig. 3 shows on the left forearm composition D, containing 3% per weight propylene glycol. The right forearm was distributed with composition A, either containing no 1,2-alkane diol. It can be clearly seen that both forearms show a strong foaming effect.

[0071 ] Furthermore, the soaping effect of two emulsions were compared: A formula without 1,2-pentanediol (placebo) versus a formula containing 5% per weight of 1,2 -pentanediol. The study was done by consumer evaluation with a naive panel and the results were obtained by a statistic method.

[0074] The naive panel (50 persons) have been asked to determine a mark between 0 and 10 for each product concerning the foaming effect (0 = no foaming). 10 = strong foaming) and to conclude which formula is the most foaming.
[0075] One pressure (airless packaging) per formula was applied on the different forearms and 10 rotations have been made by the same applier. Table 4 and Fig. 5 and 6 show the results of the evaluation. "ARP" is the emulsion with 1,2-pentanediol and "OJL" is the placebo. All marks by the 50 persons have been considered and the mean was taken. It can be seen that there is a significant difference between the placebo and the formula containing 1,2- pentanediol related to the foaming effect. This means that the placebo formula is much more foaming, whereas 1,2-pentanediol shows clearly its potential as an anti-foaming agent.

[0077] There is a huge difference according to the evaluation by a naive panel between formulas with and without 1,2-alkane diols, thus an improvement can be observed for the foaming effect (less foaming of the compositions) with regard to the use of 1,2-alkane diols in cosmetic compositions, especially the use of 1,2 pentanediol and 1,2 hexane diol.
[0078] The following formulation types are aqueous based (aqueous solution) without ethanol or low content of ethanol. 1,2-pentanediol and 1,2-hexanediol act as an anti foaming agent.

Claims

1. Use of at least one 1,2-alkane diol as an anti-foaming agent in cosmetic compositions.
2. The use according to claim 1, wherein the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 % per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
3. The use according to claim 2, wherein the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.2 to 8% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
4. The use according to claim 2, wherein the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is used in an amount of from 0.5 to 5% per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
5. The use according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one 1,2- alkane diol has a chain length of from 5 to 12 carbon atoms.
6. The use according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein the at least one 1,2- alkane diol is selected from 1,2-pentanediol or 1,2-hexanediol.
7. The use according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein the cosmetic composition is selected from the group consisting of an emulsion, a cream, a mousse, a spray or a lotion or an aqueous solution.
8. The use according to claim 7, wherein the cosmetic composition is a sunscreen lotion or color cosmetics.
9. A cosmetic composition, comprising
(a) at least one 1,2-alkane diol;
(b) inorganics;
(c) water; and optionally
(d) emulsifier;
(e) essential oils; and
(f) thickener,
wherein the cosmetic composition is free of silicones.
10. The cosmetic composition according to claim 9, wherein the at least one 1,2-alkane diol is selected from 1,2-pentanediol or 1,2-hexanediol.
11. The cosmetic composition according to claim 9 and/or 10, wherein the at least one 1,2- alkane diol is added in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 % per weight, calculated on the cosmetic composition.
12. The cosmetic composition according to at least one of claims 9 to 11, being an emulsion.
13. The cosmetic composition according to at least one of claims 9 to 12, wherein the inorganics is an inorganic pigment and selected from zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
14. The cosmetic composition according to at least one of claims 9 to 13, wherein the thickener is a mandatory ingredient and is selected from the group consisting of Xanthan gum, Acacia Gum, cellulose gum, cellulose, Sclerotium gum, Algin, Microcrystalline cellulose, Carrageenan, Pectin, Carboxymethylcellulose, Gellan gum.
15. The cosmetic composition according to at least one of claims 9 to 14, wherein the emulsifier is a mandatory ingredient and is selected from potassium cetyl phosphate and hydrogenated palm glycerides.
