  • the invention is directed to a no-sew fabric tape comprising a plurality of permanent glue compartments.
  • the invention is further directed to a no-sew fabric tape comprising both permanent adhesive compartmentsas well as a non-permanent glue layer applied to at least one external surface of the fabric tape, thereby allowing a two-step method comprising a basting step, relying on the non-permanent glue and a permanent step relying on the permanent glue.
  • the invention is directed in addition to do-it-yourself kits comprising a no-sew fabric tape comprising a plurality of permanent glue compartments.
  • Fabrics may be joined by non-sewing methods, such as ties, buttons, snaps, tape and glue. While various fabric glues, including fabric glue tapes are known, they mostly require ironing and generally, do not durably join the pieces of fabric and therefore, especially under laundering, the pieces of fabric tend to separate from one another. For example, certain fusible webs are known to be used in the field as a pre-sewing basting method for attaching any two pieces of material together, e.g., forming a hem or a seem, wherein, at a later stage, the two pieces of fabric are sewm together using conventional methods. Thus, the product known today are not appropriate for many do-it-yourself (DIY) projects, especially if the final product is to be durable under, e.g., laundry.

Description

NO-SEW FABRIC TAPE COMPRISING A PLURALITY OF PERMANENT
GLUE COMPARTMENTS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention is directed to a no-sew fabric tape comprising a plurality of permanent glue compartments. The invention is further directed to a no-sew fabric tape comprising both permanent adhesive compartmentsas well as a non-permanent glue layer applied to at least one external surface of the fabric tape, thereby allowing a two-step method comprising a basting step, relying on the non-permanent glue and a permanent step relying on the permanent glue. The invention is directed in addition to do-it-yourself kits comprising a no-sew fabric tape comprising a plurality of permanent glue compartments.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Many uses of fabric require the joining of two or more pieces of fabric to one another. The conventional methods include sewing; however, non- sewing methods for joining at least two pieces of fabric together, which are more appropriate for those who do not have the required sewing skills, are known as well.
[0003] Fabrics may be joined by non-sewing methods, such as ties, buttons, snaps, tape and glue.
[0004] Therefore, there is a need for a fabric tape that will provide both simple means for joining fabrics and further, will provide a durable joinder of the fabrics.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
[0036] As used herein, the term“about” is defined as ±10% of the specifically disclosed value.
[0037] As used herein, the terms“glue” and“adhesive” are interchangeable, unless specifically mentioned otherwise, or unless would have been understood otherwise by a person skilled in the art.
[0038] As used herein, the term“fabric” is defined to include any type of woven or non- woven fabric, as well as any type of sheet or strip of material prepared from any appropriate polymeric material, fibers and the like. Specifically, although the terms “fabric” and“fabric tape” are used herein, it is noted that any type of woven or non woven fabric is included in the invention, as well as any type of sheet, strip of material or the like, prepared from any material, such as woven fabric, non-woven fabric, polymeric sheets, strips of various polymeric materials, fibers and the like.
[0039] As used herein, term such as“two pieces of fabric”,“two or more pieces of fabric” and the like, are considered to include also a single piece of fabric that is folded over, such that two portions of the same piece of fabric are adhered to one another and are included in the scope of the“two pieces of fabric” and the like related to herein. For example, a hem may be prepared according to this invention, wherein the folded over fabric which constitutes the hem is considered herein to be“two pieces of fabric”, which are adhered to one another to form the hem.
[0040] Embodiments of the invention are directed to a fabric tape comprising a plurality of permanent glue compartments, wherein the compartments are sealed until a time when they become unsealed by external force. The permanent glue is such that when coming on contact with two or more pieces of fabric, it will hold the pieces of fabric together permanently, and will be durable under harsh conditions, such as machine washing and the like.
[0041] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape may be decorated on one external surface, e.g., it may include a patterned/decorated textile fabric on an external surface thereof, such that the fabric tape may be applied to one piece of fabric and adhered thereto, as detailed herein, thereby decorating that fabric at any desired location by placing the decorated fabric tape where desired. According to some embodiments, the fabric tape, possibly decorated/patterned, may be used to adhere two or more pieces of fabric, wherein the pieces of fabric do not necessarily overlap. According to such embodiments, the fabric tape may lay on top of pieces of fabric that are adjacent to one another, wherein the fabric tape is placed at least along the seem between the pieces of fabric and is used to adhere the pieces of fabric to one another as detailed herein. The fabric tape according to such embodiments lies above the pieces of fabric it is connecting to one another, rather than between them and may be used as a decoration for the prepared article.
[0042] According to some embodiments, the decorated textile tape includes a blocking layer, which blocks the permanent glue from reaching the decorated external surface of the fabric tape.
[0043] In this respect it is noted that wherever, throughout this application, the adherence of two or more pieces of fabric is described, the invention also includes the adhering of a decorated fabric tape to one or more pieces of fabric, such that all relevant elements detailed herein are defined to include both adhering two (or more) pieces of fabric, as well as adhering a decorated fabric tape to one or more pieces of fabric, possibly both adhereing pieces of fabric and decorating them, even where only one of those options is mentioned.
[0044] According to some embodiments, the compartments are unsealed by the application of external pressure on the fabric tape, e.g., pressing by hand or implement, including any type of blunt object, such as a rolling pin or a ruler. According to some embodiments, the compartments randomly rupture at any region or point. According to some embodiments, the compartments are prepared such that each compartment includes at least one weak point or region that is ruptured upon the application of external pressure. According to some embodiments, the compartments are prepared such that each compartment includes at least one seam, zip-lock-like element, or the like, which is opened upon the application of external pressure on the fabric tape.
[0045] According to some embodiments, the permanent adhesive compartments are positioned on the fabric tape in a pattern that allows fabrics to remain flexible, pliable and to maintain at least part of their elasticity, even after adhered to the fabric tape and even along the adherence region, i.e., the particular region in which the fabric tape is adhered to the fabric(s).
[0046] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape further includes a non-permanent glue, which is applied on at least one external surface of the fabric tape. For example, the non-permanent glue may be applied to one side of the fabric tape, which may come into contact with at least one piece of fabric. According to some embodiments, the non permanent glue is applied to at least two external surfaces of the fabric tape. For example, the non-permanent glue may be applied to both sides of the fabric tape, which may come into contact with at least two pieces of fabric. According to some embodiments, the non permanent glue is applied only to certain regions of at least one external surface of the fabric tape, not to the entire surface. According to other embodiments, the non-permanent glue is applied essentially to at least one entire external surface of the fabric tape. By “external” it meant that the non-permanent glue is found on top of the fabric and/or the permanent glue compartments, or at least portions thereof.
[0047] The non-permanent glue allows the user to place and replace the fabric tape until the location thereof is optimal, wherein it is held in place by the non-permanent glue until the permanent adhesive compartmentsare unsealed, as detailed herein. Thus, the non permanent glue element may add a basting-like step to the method of adhering the fabric tape to any type or fabric and/or joining any two or more pieces of fabric, wherein the basting step precedes the step of unsealing the permanent glue compartments.
[0048] The simple application of the fabric tape of the invention, as well as the possibility of“basting” and“re-basting” using the non-permanent glue, allows any user, including non-professional users, to apply the invention for their needs and desires. Therefore, home “do-it-yourself’ (DIY) projects, even those perfomed by children and non professional adults, may benefit from the fabric tape disclosed herein. Accordingly, the fabric tape of the invention may be sold separately for any DIY use and further, it may included in any DIY kit requiring the adhesion of two or more pieces of fabric and/or the decoration of fabric with decorated fabric tape, as detailed herein.
[0049] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape further comprises a cover layer, which may cover any regions to which the non-permanent glue is applied. Before being applied to the fabric, the cover layer is removed, thereby exposing the non-permanent glue, which may, non-permanently adhere the fabric tape to the fabric. Since the adhesion is non-permanent, the position of the fabric tape on the fabric may be changed. [0050] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape further comprises a protection layer. The protection layer may be a padded layer that covers the plurality of permanent glue compartments, such that the protection layer prevents the undesired rupture or opening of the compartments due to possible external forces. According to some embodiments, the protection layer is removed from the fabric tape before the application of the fabric tape to the fabric. According to some embodiments, the protection layer is removed from the fabric tape after the application of the tape to at least one piece of fabric, but before it is desired to permanently adhere the pieces of fabric together by rupturing the permanent glue compartments.
[0051] According to some embodiments, a single element is provided to be both the cover layer and the protective layer. According to some embodiments, the fabric tape may be provided in a role and therefore, may not require a cover layer, a protective layer or either one of those layers.
[0052] Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method for adhering at least two pieces of fabric, wherein the method comprises: positioning fabric tape on top of a first piece of fabric, wherein the fabric tape comprises a plurality of permanent glue compartments; positioning a second piece of fabric on top of the fabric tape, thereby providing a fabric tape sandwiched between a region of the first and second pieces of fabric; and exerting an external force on the fabric tape sandwiched between a region of the first and second pieces of fabric, thereby releasing permanent glue from at least part or all of the plurality of permanent glue compartments, such that the first piece of fabric and the second piece of fabric are permanently adhered in at least part of the region in which the fabric tape is sandwiched between the first and second pieces of fabric.
[0053] Further embodiments of the invention are directed to a method for adhering decorated fabric tape to at least one piece of fabric, thereby decorating the fabric, wherein the method comprises: positioning the decorated fabric tape on top of a piece of fabric, wherein the decorated fabric tape comprises a plurality of permanent glue compartments; and exerting an external force on the decorated fabric tape, thereby releasing permanent glue from at least part or all of the plurality of permanent glue compartments, such that the decorated fabric tape is permanently adhered to the fabric.
[0054] According to some embodiments, the method further comprises, removing a protective layer, a cover layer or both from a first side of the fabric tape, before placing the fabric tape onto the first piece of fabric. [0055] According to some embodiments, the method further comprises removing a protective layer, a cover layer or both from a second side of the fabric tape before placing the second piece of fabric onto the fabric tape.
[0056] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape comprises a first protective layer, a first cover layer or both on a first side of the fabric tape and a second protective layer, a second cover layer or both on a second side of the fabric tape. According to some embodiments, the method further comprises removing the first protective layer, the first cover layer or both from the first side of the fabric tape before placing the fabric tape onto the first piece of fabric and removing the second protective layer, the second cover layer or both from the second side of the fabric tape before placing a second piece of fabric onto the fabric tape.
[0057] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape, e.g., in the form of a strip, may be positioned and repositioned as many times as required onto the first piece of fabric, until a desired position is obtained. According to some embodiments, the second piece of fabric may be positioned and repositioned on the fabric tape as many times as required, until a desired position is obtained. It is noted that, as detailed above, the fabric tape may include non-permanent adhesive on one or both sides of the tape such that, since it is non permanent, it does not prevent the replacement of the fabric tape on the first piece of fabric and/or the replacement of the second piece of fabric on the fabric tape. However, the non-permanent adhesive may aid in keeping the position of the two pieces of fabric and the fabric tape relative to one another under the desired position is obtained and until the permanent glue is release by external pressure from at least part of the plurality of permanent glue compartments.
[0058] According to some embodiments, the fabric tape is prepared from ultraviolet (UV) curable monomers or oligomers, such as acrylate (acrylic) monomers, urethane acrylates oligomers, polyester acrylates oligomers, aminated acrylates, epoxy acrylates (bisphenol acrylics), polyfunctional acrylics, or any combination thereof. According to some embodiments, a photoinitiator may be used to cure the monomer and/or oligomer solution.
[0059] According to some embodiments, the permanent glue comprises an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer based emulsion. According to some embodiments, the permanent glue comprises cellulose ethers, cellulose esters, natural rubber, synthetic rubber, polyethylebe, polypropylene, poly(vinyl-esters), poly(vinyl-chloride, poly(vinyl- alcohol), poly(viny-alcohol), poly(vinyl-acetals), poly(vinyl-formal), poly(vinyl- butyral), phenolic resins, acrylate polymers, methacrylate polymers, poly( vinyl-ethers), poly (vinyl pyrrolidone), polystyrene, polyamides, polyamidoamines, acrylates of a- cyanoacrylic esters, including methyl, ethyl, butyl, allyl and methoxyethyl esters, polyesters, polyurethanes, gelatin, cellulose acetate, poly(vinylidene chloride), polysulfides, or any combination thereof.
[0060] According to some embodiments, the emulsion may further comprise additives, such as benzoate ester emulsifiers, such as crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymers (carbopol), tetrasodium pyrophosphate, thickeners such as methylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, sodium polyacrylate, solvents, such as N-methyl-2- pyrrolidone, isophorone, cyclohexanone, toluene, butyl acetate, and/or plasticizers, such as dibutyl phthalate.
[0061] According to some embodiments, the non-permanent glue is a pressure sensitive adhesive. According to some embodiments, the non-permanent glue comprises acetone, isobutane, heptane isomers, propane, polydiene rubbers, styrenic block copolymers, acrylics, such as n-butyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methylacrylate, vinylacetate, tert- butyl acrylate, styrene, and/or acrylic acid, polyisobutylene and/or butyl rubber, ethylene- vinyl acetate copolymers, silicone elastomers, or any combination thereof.
[0062] Reference is now made to Figure 1A, presenting an embodiment of the fabric tape of the invention. As shown in Figure 1A, fabric tape 1 comprises fabric 2, permanent adhesive compartments 10 on top of fabric 2 and filled with permanent glue 20.
[0063] Optionally, fabric tape 1 further includes non-permanent glue layer 30, non permanent glue layer 40 or both non-permanent glue layer 30 and non-permanent glue layer 40. Further optionally, cover layer 50 and/or cover layer 60 may be included on fabric tape 1, covering the optional non-permanent glue layer, such that, when application is desired, cover layer 50 and/or over layer 60 is removed and subsequently, the fabric tape is placed on the fabric. It is noted that, as detailed above, either one or both of cover layers 50 and 60 may also act as a protection layer, ensuring that the permanent glue is not released from the permanent adhesive compartmentsuntil desired. As further noted above, fabric tape 1 may include two layers, one a cover layer, such as cover layers 50 and/or 60, and one additional layer, not shown in the figure, adjacent to one or each of cover layers 50 and/or 60, as a protection layer. [0064] As shown in Figure 1B, external force may be exerted on fabric tape 1, e.g., by finger 100, thereby releasing permanent glue 20 from permanent adhesive compartments 10, e.g., by rupturing permanent glue compartments 10. The external force may be exerted on the backside of fabric tape 1, i.e., from the direction of fabric 2.
[0065] After the release of permanent glue 20 from permanent adhesive compartments 10, fabric tape 1 may be as shown in Figure 1C, wherein permanent adhesive compartments 10 are in a deflated form and permanent glue 20 is spread to the surroundings, e.g., along fabric 2, on top of permanent adhesive compartments 1, etc.
[0066] Reference is now made to figures 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F and 2G, presenting the steps of a process for preparing an embodiment of the fabric tape of the invention. As shown in Figure 2 A, strip of fabric 200 is covered with mask 201. As will be understood, mask 201 determines the size, number and distribution of the permanent glue compartments. Accoirdng to some embodiments, the mask may be prepared from any appropriate material, such as plastic films prepared from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), plyvinyl chloride (PVC) and the like, hard plastic sheets, such as sheets prepared from polycarbonate, polyamide, poly(methyl methacrylate) and the like, metals, such as aluminum or stainless steel, etc.
[0067] As shown in Figure 2B, a thin layer of composition 202 is applied, e.g., by spray, onto mask 201 and fabric 200, wherein composition 202 is deposited onto fabric 200 according to the pattern of mask 201. According to some embodiments, composition 202 is applied to form a layer having a thickness of between about 0.5-200 pm. According to some embodiments, the mask includes a pattern of holes having a diameter of between about 50-500 pm.
[0068] Composition 202 may be any composition that may be hardened in order to form the permanent glue compartments, as detailed herein. Composition 202 may be hardened using any appropriate process known in the field. According to some embodiments, composition 202 is a light-polymerizable composition, curable by, e.g., UV light visible light, infrared light (heat), and any other appropriate type of radiation. According to some embodiments, composition 202 may be hardened by any other appropriate physical or chamical process, e.g., by contact with moisture, oxygen, the addition of a hardener and the like. Although the remainder of the process is described herein regarding composition 202 as a being cured by UV, it is noted that any other appropriate composition may be used and that any other curing/hardening methods may be implemented. [0069] Once composition 202 is applied onto mask 201 and fabric 200, mask 201 is removed from fabric 200 (not shown). After the removal of mask 201, composition 202, remaining on fabric 200 in a pattern determined by mask 201, is cured, e.g., by UV light 210, as shown in Figure 2C, thereby providing regions of cured composition 202 on fabric 200.
[0070] Permanent glue is then applied onto regions of cured composition 202. Although not shown in the figures, in order to apply permanent glue onto regions of cured composition 202, mask 201, or a similar mask having essentially the same pattern, may be placed onto fabric 200, essentially exposing only the regions of cured composition 202, such that the permanent glue may be applied onto mask 201 (or equivalent) and fabric 200, e.g., by spray, wherein, after removing mask 201 (or equivalent) substantially only the regions of cured composition 202 are covered with the permanent glue. According to other embodiments, as presented in Figure 2D, permanent glue 203 may be applied dropwise particularly onto regions of cured composition 202.
[0071] Although not shown in the figure, once permanent glue 203 is applied, mask 201 (or equivalent) may be placed onto fabric 200, essentially exposing only regions of cured composition 202 covered by permanent glue 203. After placing mask 201 (or equivalent), a second layer of composition 202 may be applied, e.g., by spray, such that when mask
201 (or equivalent) is removed, the second layer of composition 202 is found essentially only on the regions of cured composition 202 covered by permanent glue 203. According to some embodiments, not shown, the second layer of composition 202 may be applied in a dropwise manner, particularly in order to essentially cover only the regions of cured composition 202 covered by permanent glue 203.
[0072] According to other embodiments, as shown in Figure 2E, mask 201 is not used and therefore, a second layer 220 of composition 202 is applied, e.g., by spray, on the entire surface of fabric 200, including both regions of cured composition 202 cover by permanent glue 203 as well as bare regions of fabric 200.
[0073] The second layer 220 of composition 202 is cured, e.g., by UV light 210, as shown in Figure 2F, regardless of the particular application region of that layer.
[0074] Optionally, as presented in Figure 2G, once the second layer 220 of composition
202 is cured, non-permanent glue 204 is applied to the surface of fabric 200, thereby providing an embodiment of the fabric tape of the invention. [0075] Reference is now made to Figure 3, presented a region of fabric tape 1000 comprising fabric 200, permanent glue compartment 110, permanent glue 120 and nonpermanent glue layer 130. As shown in Figure 3, permanent glue compartment 110 is prepared from a first layer 111 of cured composition and a second layer 112 of cured composition, such that first layer 111 and second layer 112 provide permanent glue compartment 110, filled with permanent glue 120. In the embodiment shown in Figure 3, second layer 112 stretches along the entire surface of fabric 200 and therefore, as described above and as shown in Figure 2E, second layer 112 was applied to the entire surface of fabric 200, without the implementation of a mask. In contrast, the embodiment of fabric tape 1 shown in Figures 1 A and 1C, includes a second layer of cured composition only enclosing permanent adhesive compartments 10, not all along fabric 2, therefore, as detailed above, in the embodiment shown in Figures 1A and 1C, the second layer of curable composition was applied only onto the regions of cured composition covered by permanent glue, e.g., by use of a mask or by dropwise application, as detailed above.
[0076] According to some embodiments, first layer 111 and second layer 112 may be prepared from different compositions. According to some embodiments, first layer 111 and second layer 112 have the same or different thicknesses, wherein the thickness of each layer may range from about l-2000pm.
[0077] Reference is now made to Figures 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D and 4E, presenting various embodiments of the invention, specifically regarding the dispersion, size and shape of the permanent adhesive compartments2l0l, 2102, 2103, 2104, 2105 and 2106 on fabric tape 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
[0078] The dispersion, size and shape of the permanent adhesive compartmentsmay be determined and prepared, e.g., according ot the intended use of the fabric tape, the required strength of the finalized product, depending, e.g., on the expected use and laundry thereof.
[0079] The dispersion, size and shape of the permanent adhesive compartmentsmay be determined and prepared, for example, in order for certain regions to remain more flexible after glueing. In this repect, please refer to Figure 4C, for example, presenting relatively large and dense permanent adhesive compartments2l03, at the perimeter of fabric tape 2003, while permanent adhesive compartments2l04 in the center of fabric tape 2003 are relatively small and dispersed farther from one another. Such an arrangement may contribute, for example, to the flexibility of the seam in the finalized product. [0080] Wavy configurations of permanent glue ompartments 2105 and 2106, as presented in Figures 4D and 4E may also contribute to the flexibility of the seam in the finalized product.
[0081] It is noted that the examples of sizes, distribution, shape, etc. of permanent glue comparments 2101, 2102, 2103, 2104, 2105 and 2106 are mere examples and that the fabric tape of the invention may be prepared using any possible size, distribution, shape, etc., as well as any combination between different sizes, distributions, shapes, etc. of the permanent glue compartments.
[0082] Although not all shown in the figures, permanent adhesive compartmentsmay be distributed on the top surface of the fabric, the bottom surface of the fabric, or both the top and the bottom surface of the fabric, thereby providing different embodiments of the fabric tape of the invention. Similar processes to those described above may be used to provide fabric tape comprising permanent adhesive compartmentson both surfaces of the fabric tape.
[0083] While certain features of the invention have been illustrated and described herein, many modifications, substitutions, changes, and equivalents may occur to those skilled in the art. It is, therefore, to be understood that the appended claims are intended to cover all such modifications and changes as fall within the true spirit of the invention.
