Description
A BICYCLE PROVIDED WITH A DEFLECTOR FOR PROTECTING A REAR
WHEEL THEREOF
BACKGROUND
Field of the Disclosure
[0001] The present invention relates to a bicycle and, in particular, to a bicycle provided with a deflector for protecting a rear wheel thereof.
Description of the Related Art
[0002] European Patent Application Publication No. EP0978445 to Evans et al. discloses a bicycle provided with a mudguard for guarding a chain wheel from mud thrown up by the front wheel. The mudguard surrounds the forward lower quadrant of the bicycle chain wheel, whilst leaving the side face of the chain wheel uncovered. This reduces damage to the chain, chain wheel and sprockets.
[0003] United States Patent No. 4,515,386 to Tsujimura discloses a bicycle provided with a guard for guarding a chain wheel. The guard is mounted on a lower pipe and a crossbar between chain stays. The guard protects the chain wheel from bumping against rocks or undulations on the ground when the bicycle is used in the mountains.
SUMMARY
[0004] It is an object of the present invention to provide a bicycle with a deflector for protecting a rear wheel thereof.
[0005] There is accordingly provided a bicycle comprising a frame, a front wheel supported by the frame, and a rear wheel supported by the frame. The front wheel and the rear wheel are ground engaging wheels. A deflector is mounted on the frame. The deflector extends downwardly towards the ground when the front wheel and the rear wheel of the bicycle engage the ground. The deflector is positioned to deflect debris thrown by the front wheel of the bicycle towards the rear wheel of the bicycle.
[0006] The bicycle may include chain stays and the deflector may extend downwardly from the chain stays towards the ground when the front wheel and the rear wheel of the bicycle engage the ground. The deflector may be mounted on the chain stays. The bicycle may include a cross brace extending between the chain stays and the deflector may be mounted on the cross brace. The bicycle may include a seat tube and the deflector may be mounted on the seat tube. The bicycle may include a rear wheel fender and the deflector is attached to the rear wheel fender or the deflector may be unitary with the rear wheel fender.

[0020] Figure 13 is an elevation view of yet still another bicycle provided with a deflector to protect a rear wheel thereof; and
[0021] Figure 14 is a perspective view of the bicycle of Figure 13.
DESCRIPTIONS OF SPECIFIC EMBODIMENTS
[0022] Referring to the drawings, and first to Figures 1 and 2, a bicycle 10 is shown. The bicycle 10 generally comprises a frame 12 which supports a seat 14, a handlebar 16, pedals 18 and 20, a chain mechanism 22, a front wheel 24, and a rear wheel 26. The front wheel 24 and the rear wheel 26 are ground engaging wheels. The front wheel 24 is rotatably mounted to a fork 28. The rear wheel 26 is rotatably mounted to a connection point of chain
stays 30 and 32 and seat stays 34 and 36. The bicycle 10 is further provided with a deflector 38 extending from the chain stays 30 and 32. In this example, the deflector 38, as best shown in Figure 3, is mounted to a cross brace 40 for a rear wheel fender. The cross brace 40 extends between the chain stays 30 and 32. A fastener, in the form of a bolt 42, is used to mount the deflector 38 in place of a rear wheel fender.
[0023] The deflector 38 is positioned to deflect debris 44 thrown by the front wheel 24 of the bicycle 10 towards the rear wheel 26 of the bicycle 10. In particular, the deflector 38 extends downwardly from the chains stays 30 and 32 towards the ground when the front wheel 24 and the rear wheel 26 engage the ground. The deflector 38 may be employed to deflect nails, shards of glass, and other sharp debris. This may reduce damage to the rear wheel 26 of the bicycle 10 and prevent a tire of the rear wheel 26 of the bicycle 10 from being punctured. The deflector 38 is shown in greater detail in Figure 4 and, in this example, has a substantially rectangular shape with an aperture 46 for receiving the bolt 42 used to mount the deflector 38. It will be understood by a person skilled in the art that, in other examples, the deflector may be in other suitable shapes.
[0024] Referring now to Figures 5 to 7, another bicycle 50 is shown. The bicycle 50 is generally similar to the bicycle 10, shown in Figures 1 to 3, with the notable exception that the bicycle 50 is provided with a deflector 52 having clips 54 and 56. The clips 54 and 56 engage respective ones of chain stays 58 and 60 to mount the deflector 52 to the chain stays 58 and 60. The deflector 52 extends downwardly from the chains stays 58 and 60 towards the ground when a front wheel 64 and a rear wheel 66 of the bicycle 50 engage the ground. The deflector 52 is accordingly positioned to deflect debris 68 thrown by the front wheel 64 of the bicycle 50 towards the rear wheel 66 of the bicycle 50. The deflector 52 may be employed to deflect nails, shards of glass, and other sharp debris. This may reduce damage to the rear wheel 66 of the bicycle 50 and prevent a tire of the rear wheel 66 of the bicycle 50 from being punctured. The deflector 52 is shown in greater detail in Figure 8 and, in this example, has a substantially rectangular shape with the clips 54 and 56 disposed at an end thereof. It will be understood by a person skilled in the art that, in other examples, the deflector may be in other suitable shapes.
[0025] Referring now to Figures 9 to 11, another bicycle 70 is shown. The bicycle 70 is generally similar to the bicycle 10, shown in Figures 1 to 3, with the notable exception that the bicycle 70 is provided with a deflector 72 having a clip 74. The clip 74 engages a seat tube 76. The deflector 72 extends downwardly from the chains stays 78 and 80 towards the ground when a front wheel 82 and a rear wheel 84 of the bicycle 70 engage the ground. The deflector 72 is accordingly positioned to deflect debris 86 thrown by the front wheel 82 of the bicycle 70 towards the rear wheel 84 of the bicycle 70. The deflector 72 may be employed to deflect nails, shards of glass, and other sharp debris. This may reduce damage to the rear wheel 84 of the bicycle 70 and prevent a tire of the rear wheel 84 of the bicycle 70 from being punctured. The deflector 72 is shown in greater detail in Figure 12 and, in this example, has a substantially rectangular shape with the clip 74 being generally tubular and being disposed at an end of the deflector 72. It will be understood by a person skilled in the art that, in other examples, the deflector may be in other suitable shapes.
[0026] Referring now to Figures 13 and 14, another bicycle 90 is shown. The bicycle 90 is generally similar to the bicycle 10, shown in Figures 1 to 3, with the notable exception that the bicycle 90 is further provided with a rear wheel fender 92 having a deflector portion 94 which extends downwardly from the chains stays 96 and 98 towards the ground when a front wheel 100 and a rear wheel 102 of the bicycle 90 engage the ground. The deflector portion 92 is accordingly positioned to deflect debris 104 thrown by the front wheel 100 of the bicycle 90 towards the rear wheel 102 of the bicycle 90. The deflector portion 94 may be employed to deflect nails, shards of glass, and other sharp debris. This may reduce damage to the rear wheel 102 of the bicycle 90 and prevent a tire of the rear wheel 102 of the bicycle 90 from being punctured. The deflector portion 94 of the bicycle 90 may be attached to or may be unitary with the rear wheel fender 92. It will be understood by a person skilled in the art that, in other examples, the deflector may be in other suitable shapes.
[0027] It will be understood by a person skilled in the art that many of the details provided above are by way of example only, and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention which is to be determined with reference to the following claims.
