Description

PACKAGE AND BLANK
Field of invention
The invention relates to a package. The package is specifically designed to be provided with a moisture resistant inside. Such a package may e.g. be used to hold wet products, such as wet food products, such as meat, vegetables or fish. The invention also relates to a blank for forming such a package.
Technical Background
When designing a package for transport of products, it is desirous to take into account a number of different design criteria. The package should e.g. make efficient use of the material, be easy to transport to the point of use, be easy to prepare for use, and it should provide a strong package. It should be strong during handling and it should typically be capable of carrying other packages such that they may be stacked on top of each other. When designing a package for transport of wet food products, such as meat, vegetables or fish, it is often a difficulty to make the package capable of remaining mechanically stable over a sufficient time period. In packages formed of cardboard or paper based materials, the packages often lose their mechanical stability due to moisture soaking into the material whereby the cardboard or paper based material becomes softer than they are in their dry condition. Thus, it may be said that the package should adequately address a set of design criteria that the package should be efficient when it comes to material consumption, it should be easy to erect (preferably without the use of any adhesive), it should be capable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flap and it should be capable of maintaining mechanical integrity even though wet products are stored in the package.
There exist numerous attempts to address the above design criteria in connection with transport of wet products.
In EP 2 125 538 B1 , there is disclosed a fold flat carton precursor for a liquid tight carton comprises a floor, a pair of side walls and a pair of end walls with diagonal fold flaps at the corners. The diagonal fold flaps at the corners are folded into the interior of the carton. The excess length of the end walls is folded over the diagonal fold flaps into the interior of the container with the free end of the end walls abutting the floor of the carton. The different flaps are disclosed to be held in place by application of adhesive.
EP 2 275 352 B1 discloses a packing for fresh fish and similar products. It is said to maintain mechanical integrity in cold and humid conditions. The side walls are connected via attachment flaps abutting the inside of the end walls and excessive length of the end walls is folded into the interior of the package. It is also disclosed that the material includes a fibreglass mesh.
EP 3 115 310 B1 discloses a leak tight tray for transporting wet products, such as fresh fish. It is disclosed that the end panels comprise prolongations which are folded into the interior of the package such that the prolongations form triangular corner posts.
US 2,495,807 discloses a double walled box or carton for food products. The carton is said to be liquid tight and adapted for products such as sliced meat and the like. It is disclosed that the box has an inner bottom panel and an outer bottom panel hingedly connected at one side edge to the bottom edge of one of the outer side walls and having a sealing flap hingedly connected to its other side edge and lapped upon and adhesively secured to the inner side of the other outer side wall. The end panels have tucking flaps which are inserted between the inner and outer bottom wall panels. The tucking flaps are hingedly connected to the lower edges of the outer end walls by hinge scores. Slits are provided at the ends of the hinge scores forming locking tabs on the ends of the tucking flaps.
US 2006/0151584 A1 discloses a double walled box for food products. The box is formed of a blank comprising a rectangular bottom panel, a pair of side wall panel means foldably connected to sides of the bottom panel and provided with end flaps, a pair of end wall panel means each comprising a first end wall panel foldably connected to an associated end of the bottom wall panel so as to be foldable upwardly therefrom and a second end wall panel foldably connected to the first end wall panel, and foldable gusset means at each comer of the bottom panel connecting opposite ends of each side wall panel means to opposite ones of said end wall panel means. In the erected container base the two end flaps are folded against the associated first end wall panel and the second end wall panel of each end wall panel means is folded over the underlying end flaps. US 2006/0151584 A1 discloses numerous variants in which an adhesive is used to attach the first and second end wall panels to the underlying end flaps. There is also disclosed designs in which the second end wall panel is designed as a tongue. However, the designs in US 2006/0151584 A1 does not address the criterion that the package should be capable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flap.
CH219035A discloses a package similar to the package disclosed in US 2006/0151584 A1 and the package disclosed in CH219035A is
associated with the same drawback related to that it does not adequately address the design criterion that the package should be capable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flap.
It may be noted that none of the prior art documents discloses a package which adequately addresses the set of design criteria that the package should be efficient when it comes to material consumption, it should be easy to erect (preferably without the use of any adhesive), it should be capable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flap and it should be capable of maintaining mechanical integrity even though wet products are stored in the package.
Summary of invention
It is an object of the invention to provide a package which addresses the set of design criteria that the package should be efficient when it comes to material consumption, it should be easy to erect (preferably without the use of any adhesive), it should be capable of being handled without risking unintentional withdrawal of any flap and it should be capable of maintaining mechanical integrity even though wet products are stored in the package.
This object has been achieved by a package having
a bottom formed of a bottom panel, a first end wall and a second end wall being arranged at two opposing ends of the package as seen along a longitudinal direction,
a first side wall and a second side wall being arranged at two opposing sides of the package as seen along a transverse direction,
wherein the first and second end walls each comprises an end wall panel being foldably connected to the bottom panel,
wherein the first and second side walls each comprises an inner side wall panel forming an inside of respective side wall and an outer side wall panel forming an outside of respective side wall,
wherein respective inner side wall panel
is located between the respective outer side wall panel and the bottom panel as seen along the transverse direction,
is foldably connected to respective side of the bottom panel along a respective longitudinally extending inner side fold line, and is foldably connected to respective outer side wall panel along a respective longitudinally extending outer side fold line,
wherein the outer side wall panels are each, at each longitudinal end thereof, provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel being foldable relative to the respective outer side wall panel along a respective
transversely, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, extending fold line towards an outside of respective end wall panel,
wherein respective locking panel comprises a gap portion and a locking portion such that, as the respective locking panel is folded towards the outside of respective end wall panel, a first gap having a transverse extension is formed between the gap portions facing each other, whereas the locking portions form a second gap having a second transverse extension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap,
wherein each end wall further comprises a locking tongue connected to an upper side of respective end wall panel and extending in the longitudinal direction from respective end wall panel towards a free end of respective locking tongue, the locking tongues each having an insertion portion having a transverse extension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap and being greater than the transverse extension of the second gap, wherein the package is formed from a blank, which is folded and which is held in erected state by folding the locking tongue downwards from the upper side of respective side wall panel downwardly outside the locking portions, inserting the free end of the locking tongue in the first gap between the gap portions and further folding and inserting the free end of the locking tongue between the locking portions and the outside of the respective end wall panel,
wherein, at each corner of the bottom panel, the end wall panels and the inner side wall panels are interconnected by a corner panel being foldable as overlapping triangular flaps towards an outside of the end wall panels or an outside of the inner side wall panels,
wherein the respective locking panel extends longitudinally at least partly alongside the respective corner panel and is as seen along the transverse direction positioned outside the respective corner panel,
wherein the respective locking panel is separated from the respective corner panel by a longitudinally extending cut line as seen in a flat-laid state of the package,
wherein a transition edge between the respective locking portion and the respective gap portion extends in the longitudinal direction as seen in a flat-laid state of the package,
wherein the respective gap portion has a transversal extension being such that the transition edge between the respective gap portion is positioned at a height position on the end wall between 25% and 75% of the height of the end wall as measured from inside the bottom panel, and
wherein respective locking panel being such that any overlapping flaps of the end wall panels are hidden between the outside of the end wall panels and the respective locking panel and behind the locking tongues when they are folded around the locking portions.
With such a design it is possible to provide a package having no cut edges in the interior of the package, whereby it is possible to provide a moisture resistant interior e.g. be simply coating one of the major surfaces of the blank. By providing the locking panels on the outer side wall panels and by providing them with their respective gap portion and locking portion in combination with the provision and position of the locking tongue, it is possible to lock the package in an erected state without using any adhesive. The provision of the gap portions and locking portions and the fact that the locking tongue is tucked in between the locking portions and the outside of the end wall prevents the locking tongues from simply being pulled outwardly along the longitudinal direction (which would be possible in the prior art designs). Such unintentional withdrawal otherwise typically arises when the storemen puts the package in a stack and withdraws his hands. In the inventive design any lifting of the package in the handles naturally formed by the locking tongues will actually force the locking tongues towards the locked position and since the locking tongues are folded such that they basically form a folded handle, there will be no cut edge which otherwise would have a tendency to get caught in the storemen’s gloves when the storemen puts the package in a stack and withdraws his hands. Moreover, in the inventive design there is an efficient use of material since there is no need for any outer bottom panel and since any double material thickness is provided in the side and end walls being designed to be able to carry other packages when several packages are stacked on top of each other.
A transition edge between the respective locking portion and the respective gap portion extends in the longitudinal direction as seen in a flat- laid state of the package. This transition edge will thereby extend horizontally on the outside of the end wall.
At each corner of the bottom panel, the end wall panels and the inner side wall panels are interconnected by a corner panel being foldable as overlapping triangular flaps towards an outside of the end wall panels or an outside of the inner side wall panels. This is a convenient way of providing a package without any cut edges in the interior at the corners.
The respective locking panel extends longitudinally at least partly alongside the respective corner panel and are as seen along the transverse direction positioned outside the respective corner panel. Thereby will the locking panels become positioned outside the corner panels as the package is erected. The respective locking panel is separated from the respective corner panel by a longitudinally extending cut line as seen in a flat-laid state of the package. This allows for the corner panels to be folded independently of the locking panels. It may be noted that it is possible to choose the extension of the first gap and the width of the insertion portion such that the folded locking tongue forms a useful handle on each end of the package. It may be noted that the height position of the handle on the end wall may be chosen differently by changing the, as seen in the flat-laid state, transversal extension of the gap portion. A comparably longer transversal extension of the gap portion will result in a higher height position of the handle. The respective gap portion has a transversal extension being such that a transition edge between the respective gap portion and locking portion is positioned at a height position on the end wall between 25% and 75% of the height of the end wall as measured from the inside of the bottom panel.
The respective locking portion of the respective locking panel may have, as seen along the longitudinal direction and in a flat-laid state of the package, an extension from the respective outer side wall panel being greater than an extension of the respective gap portion of the respective locking panel.
The respective locking portion of the respective locking panel may, as seen along the transversal direction and in a flat-laid state of the package, be positioned closer to the bottom panel than the respective gap portion of the respective locking panel. Thereby will the gap portion be positioned closer to the bottom when the inner and outer side wall panels are folded relative to each other and form the respective side wall.
The respective corner panel may be provided with a fold line extending from the respective corner outwardly, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, in both the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction. This facilitates folding of the corner panels.
In an erected state of the package, the corner panels are preferably folded as overlapping triangular flaps towards the outside of the end wall panels. Thereby will the locking panels keep the triangular flaps in place and the outer and inner side wall panels may abut each other directly along the complete longitudinal length of the side wall.
The respective transition edge between the respective locking portion and the respective gap portion may, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, be positioned at a transversal distance and the longitudinal extension of respective gap portion may be such that any corner panels being folded as overlapping triangular flaps towards the outside of the end wall panels are hidden between the outside of the end wall panels and the respective locking panel at least along the respective transition edge.
The locking portions preferably form a second gap having a second transverse extension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap. By having a small gap between the locking portions there is with a certainty provided a minimum of materials overlapping each other.
The respective locking tongue may further comprise a base portion having a transversal extension being greater than the respective transversal extension of the insertion portion, the transversal extension of the respective base portion preferably being equal to a transversal width of the bottom panel. Such a base portion will form a cover over the otherwise exposed portions of the locking portions which reduces the risk of anything getting caught by any exposed cut edges of the package as it is handled.
The package is preferably formed of a blank formed of a card board or paper based material.
At least a major surface of the blank being intended to form an inside of the package is preferably provided with a water resistance improving polymer based coating.
The above mentioned object has also been accomplished by the provision of a blank intended to be erected into a package, the blank having a bottom panel,
a first end wall panel and a second end wall panel being arranged at two opposing ends of the blank as seen along a longitudinal direction, each end wall panel being foldably connected to the bottom panel, a first set of side wall panels and a second set of side wall panels being arranged at two opposing sides of the blank as seen along a transverse direction,
wherein the first and second set of side wall panels each comprises an inner side wall panel configured to form an inside of a respective side wall of the package and an outer side wall panel configured to form an outside of respective side wall of the package,
wherein respective inner side wall panel
is located between the respective outer side wall panel and the bottom panel as seen along the transverse direction,
is foldably connected to respective side of the bottom panel along a respective longitudinally extending inner side fold line, and is foldably connected to respective outer side wall panel along a respective longitudinally extending outer side fold line,
wherein the outer side wall panels are each, at each longitudinal end thereof, provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel being foldable relative to the respective outer side wall panel along a respective transversely extending fold line towards an outside of respective end wall panel,
wherein respective locking panel comprises a gap portion and a locking portion such that, as the respective locking panel is folded towards the outside of respective end wall panel, a first gap having a transverse extension is formed between the gap portions facing each other, whereas the locking portions form a second gap having a second transverse extension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap,
wherein each end wall further comprises a locking tongue connected to an upper side of respective end wall panel and extending in the longitudinal direction from respective end panel towards a free end of respective locking tongue, the locking tongues each having an insertion portion having a transverse extension being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap and being greater than the transverse extension of the second gap,
wherein, at each corner of the bottom panel, the end wall panels and the inner side wall panels are interconnected by a corner panel being foldable as overlapping triangular flaps towards an outside of the end wall panels or an outside of the inner side wall panels,
wherein the respective locking panel extends longitudinally at least partly alongside the respective corner panel and is as seen along the transverse direction positioned outside the respective corner panel,
wherein the respective locking panel is separated from the respective corner panel by a longitudinally extending cut line as seen in a flat-laid state of the package,
wherein a transition edge between the respective locking portion and the respective gap portion extends in the longitudinal direction as seen in a flat-laid state of the package,
wherein the respective gap portion has a transversal extension being such that the transition edge between the respective gap portion is positioned at a height position on the end wall between 25% and 75% of the height of the end wall as measured from inside the bottom panel, and
wherein respective locking panel being such that any overlapping flaps of the end wall panels are hidden between the outside of the end wall panels and the respective locking panel and behind the locking tongues when they are folded around the locking portions.
Advantages associated with the different features and preferred embodiments have been discussed in detail in the above in relation to the package. That discussion is equally valid in relation to the blank and reference is therefor made to the above discussion. It may be noted that the various preferred embodiments or optional features are equally applicable to the blank.
The invention may also in short be said to relate to a package having a bottom, a first and a second end wall, a first and a second side wall each comprising an inner side wall panel and an outer side wall panel, wherein the outer side wall panels are each, at each longitudinal end thereof, provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel, each comprising a gap portion and a locking portion, wherein each end wall further comprises a locking tongue configured to be folded downwards from an upper side of respective side wall panel downwardly outside the locking portions, to be inserted between the gap portions and to be further folded between the locking portions and the outside of the respective end wall panel. Advantages associated with the different features and preferred embodiments have been discussed in detail in the above in relation to more extensive disclosure of a package. That discussion is equally valid in relation to the package disclosed in this paragraph and reference is therefor made to the above discussion. It may be noted that the various preferred embodiments or optional features are equally applicable to the package disclosed in this paragraph.

Detailed description of preferred embodiments
With reference to the figures, and especially figure 6 and figure 1a, there is disclosed a package 1. The package is preferably formed of a blank 1 being erected into said package 1. The package 1 has a bottom 2. The bottom 2 is formed of a bottom panel A2. The package 1 further has a first end wall E1 a second end wall E2. The end walls E1 , E2 are arranged at two opposing ends e1 , e2 of the package 1 as seen along a longitudinal direction L. The package 1 further has a first side wall S1 and a second side wall S2. The side walls S1 , S2 are arranged at two opposing sides s1 , s2 of the package 1 as seen along a transverse direction T. The transverse direction is orthogonal to the longitudinal direction L. The longitudinal direction and the transverse direction are preferably oriented such that the define a plane being parallel to a major surface of the bottom panel A2.
The first end wall E1 comprises an end wall panel AE1 being foldably connected to the bottom panel A2. The second end wall E2 comprises an end wall panel AE2 being foldably connected to the bottom panel A2.
The first side wall S1 comprises an inner side wall panel AIS1 forming an inside ST of the first side wall S1 and an outer side wall panel AOS1 forming an outside S1” of the first respective side wall S1.
The second side wall S2 comprises an inner side wall panel AIS2 forming an inside S2’ of the second side wall S2 and an outer side wall panel AOS2 forming an outside S2” of the second side wall S2.
The inner side wall panel AIS1 of the first side wall S1 is located between the outer side wall panel AOS1 and the bottom panel A2 as seen along the transverse direction T.
The inner side wall panel AIS1 of the first side wall S1 is foldably connected to the first side s1 of the bottom panel A2 along a longitudinally extending inner side fold line FLS1.
The inner side wall panel AIS1 of the first side wall S1 is foldably connected to the outer side wall panel AOS1 along a longitudinally extending outer side fold line FLOS1.
The inner side wall panel AIS2 of the second side wall S2 is located between the outer side wall panel AOS2 and the bottom panel A2 as seen along the transverse direction T.
The inner side wall panel AIS2 of the second side wall S2 is foldably connected to the second side s2 of the bottom panel A2 along a longitudinally extending inner side fold line FLS2. The inner side wall panel AIS2 of the second side wall S2 is foldably connected to the outer side wall panel AOS2 along a longitudinally extending outer side fold line FLOS2.
The outer side wall panel AOS1 is at a first longitudinal end thereof provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel L1. The locking panel L1 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS1 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1 ) extending fold line FLL1. The outer side wall panel AOS1 is at a second longitudinal end (opposite the first longitudinal end) thereof provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel L3. The locking panel L3 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS1 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1 ) extending fold line FLL3.
The outer side wall panel AOS2 is at a first longitudinal end thereof provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel L2. The locking panel L2 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS2 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1 ) extending fold line FLL2. The outer side wall panel AOS2 is at a second longitudinal end (opposite the first longitudinal end) thereof provided with a longitudinally extending locking panel L4. The locking panel L4 is foldable relative to the outer side wall panel AOS2 along a transversely (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1 ) extending fold line FLL4.
As shown in figure 1 a, each locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4 comprises a gap portion L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a and a locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b.
As shown in figure 4, as the locking panels L1 and L2 are folded towards the outside E1” of the end wall panel AE1 , a first gap G1 having a transverse extension GT1 is formed between the gap portions L1 a, L2a facing each other. As also shown in figure 4, as the locking panels L1 and L2 are folded towards the outside E1” of the end wall panel AE1 , a second gap G2 having a second transverse extension GT2 is formed between the locking portions L1 b, L2b facing each other. The transverse extension GT2 of the second gap G2 is smaller than the transverse extension GT1 of the first gap G1. As is evident from the symmetry of the blank 1 , as the locking panels L3 and L4 are folded towards the outside E2” of the end wall panel AE2, a first gap having a transverse extension is formed between the gap portions L3a, L4a facing each other. Moreover, as the locking panels L3 and L4 are folded towards the outside E2” of the end wall panel AE2, a second gap having a second transverse extension is formed between the locking portions L3b, L4b facing each other. The transverse extension of the second gap is smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap.
As shown e.g. in figure 1 , the first end wall E1 comprises a locking tongue LT1 , and the second end wall E2 comprises a locking tongue LT2.
The locking tongue LT 1 is connected to an upper side E1 u of the first end wall panel AE1 . The locking tongue LT1 extends in the longitudinal direction L (as seen in a flat-laid state of the package) from first end wall panel AE1 towards a free end LT1 e of the locking tongue LT1 . The locking tongue LT2 is connected to an upper side E2u of the second end wall panel AE2. The locking tongue LT2 extends in the longitudinal direction L (as seen in a flat- laid state of the package) from second end wall panel AE2 towards a free end LT2e of the locking tongue LT2.
The locking tongue LT1 has an insertion portion LTT having a transverse extension LT1 T being smaller than the transverse extension GT1 of the first gap G1 between the locking panels L1 and L2.
The locking tongue LT2 has an insertion portion LT2’ having a transverse extension LT2T being smaller than the transverse extension of the first gap between the locking panels L3 and L4.
In this design with a second gap G2 present, the insertion portion LTT has a transverse extension LT1T being greater than the transverse extension GT2 of the second gap G2 between the locking panels L1 and L2. Similarly, the insertion portion LT2’ has a transverse extension LT2T being greater than the transverse extension of the second gap between the locking panels L3 and L4.
It may be noted that the gaps G1 and G2 need not be the same on the two end walls E1 , E2. It is however preferred that the package 1 is
symmetrical as shown in the figures. Thus, in the preferred embodiments, the first gap G1 between the locking panels L1 and L2 is equal to the first gap between the locking panels L3 and L4 and the second gap G2 between the locking panels L1 and L2 is equal to the second gap between the locking panels L3 and L4.
As mentioned above and as shown in figures 1 a and 1 b, the package 1 is formed from a blank.
As shown in figures 2 and 3 and especially figures 4 and 5, the blank 1 is folded and is held in erected state by folding the locking tongue LT1 , LT2 downwards from the upper side E1 u, E2u of respective side wall panel downwardly outside the locking portions L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b as indicated by arrow A in figure 5 and by inserting the free end LT1e, LT2e of the locking tongue LT1 , LT2 in the first gap G1 between the gap portions L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a as indicated by arrow B and further folding and inserting the free end LT1 e, LT2e of the locking tongue LT1 , LT2 between the locking portions L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b and the outside E1”, E2” of the respective end wall panel AE1 , AE2.
With such a design it is possible to provide a package having no cut edges in the interior of the package, whereby it is possible to provide a moisture resistant interior e.g. be simply coating one of the major surfaces of the blank. It may however be noted that the design of the package 1 as discussed above is also useful for a design where there are no corner panels (of the kind that will be discussed in detail below). In fact, a package being provided with the features disclosed above could be designed such that the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 and the inner side wall panels AIS1 , AIS2 extend alongside each other at the corners C1 , C2, C3, C4 of the package 1. The provision of the locking panels L1 , L2, L3, L4 and the locking tongues LT1 , LT2 provides a locking system that may be used to hold the package 1 in an erected state. Such a package 1 may be used to pack different goods. If it desirable to pack wet products, it is e.g. possible to provide a plastic bag inside the package 1. However, the design of the package 1 is such that it is also possible to provide corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 that
interconnects the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 with the inner side wall panels AIS1 , AIS2 as will be discussed in more detail below. It may be noted that by providing the locking panels L1 , L2, L3, L4 on the outer side wall panels AOS1 , AOS2 and by providing them with their respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a and locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b in combination with the provision and position of the locking tongues LT1 , LT2, it is possible to lock the package 1 in an erected state without using any adhesive.
It may be noted that in the disclosed inventive design any lifting of the package 1 in the handles naturally formed by the locking tongues LT1 , LT2 will actually force the locking tongues LT1 , LT2 towards the locked position (along the direction indicated by arrow B in figure 5). Moreover, since the locking tongues LT1 , LT2 are folded such that they basically form a folded handle, there will be no cut edge which otherwise would have a tendency to get caught in the storemen’s gloves when the storemen puts the package in a stack and withdraws his hands.
It may be noted that it in the disclosed design the extension of the first gap G1 and the width LT1T, LT2T of the insertion portion LT1’, LT2’ are chosen such that the folded locking tongue LT1 , LT2 forms a useful handle on each end E1 , E2 of the package 1.
It may be noted that the height position of the handle on the end wall E1 , E2 may be chosen differently by changing the, as seen in the flat-laid state, transversal extension L1 aT, L2aT, L3aT, L4aT of the gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a. A comparably longer transversal extension of the gap portion will result in a higher height position of the handle. It is preferred that the respective gap portion has a transversal extension being such that a transition edge L1 abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abe between the respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a and locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b is positioned at a height position on the end wall E1 , E2 between 25% and 75% of the height of the end wall as measured from the inside of the bottom panel A2. The height position of the gaps G1 , G2 may be said to be provided by the respective locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b of the respective locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4 being, as seen along the transversal direction and in a flat-laid state of the package 1 , positioned closer to the bottom panel A2 than the respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a of the respective locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4. Thereby will the gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a be positioned closer to the bottom than the locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b when the inner and outer side wall panels AIS1 , AOS1 , AIS2, AOS2 are folded relative to each other and form the respective side wall S1 , S2.
As mentioned above, the overall design of the locking panels L1 , L2,
L3, L4 and locking tongues LT1 , LT2 allows for the package 1 to be designed with corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4. In the disclosed preferred design, at each corner C1 , C2, C3, C4 of the bottom panel A2, the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 and the inner side wall panels AIS1 , AIS2 are interconnected by a corner panel AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 being foldable as overlapping triangular flaps towards an outside E1”, E2” of the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 as shown in figure 3. Alternatively, the corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 are foldable as overlapping triangular flaps towards an outside AIS1”, AIS2” of the inner side wall panels AIS1 , AIS2, i.e. between the inner side wall panels AIS1 , AIS2 and the outer side wall panels AOS1 , AOS2.
As shown in figure 1 a, the respective locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4 may, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, extend longitudinally at least partly alongside the respective corner panel AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 and may as seen along the transverse direction be positioned outside the respective corner panel AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4. Thereby will the locking panels L1 , L2, L3, L4, as shown in figures 3 and 4, become positioned outside the corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 as the package 1 is erected.
As shown in figure 1 a, the respective locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4 may be separated from the respective corner panel AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4, preferably by a longitudinally extending cut line as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1.
As shown in figure 1 a, the respective corner panel AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 may be provided with a fold line AC1 F, AC2F, AC3F, AC4F extending from the respective corner C1 , C2, C3, C4 outwardly, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package, in both the longitudinal direction L and the transverse direction T.
As shown in figures 4, the respective transition edge L1 abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abe between the respective locking portion L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b and the respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a may, as seen in a flat-laid state of the package 1 , be positioned at a transversal distance L1 bT, L2bT, L3bT, L4bT and the longitudinal extension L1 al_, L2al_, L3al_, L4al_ of respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a may be such that the corner panels AC1 ,
AC2, AC3, AC4 being folded as overlapping triangular flaps towards the outside E1”, E2” of the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 are hidden between the outside E1”, E2” of the end wall panels AE1 , AE2 and the respective locking panel L1 , L2, L3, L4 at least along the respective transition edge L1 abe, L2abe, L3abe, L4abe. In figure 4 it is shown that the corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 are hidden behind the respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a of the locking panels L1 , L2, L3, L4. It may also be noted that the relative dimensions of the package 1 disclosed in the figures are such that the outer most corner portions (as seen in the flat-laid state) or the upper, inner most corner portions (as seen in the erected state) of the corner panels AC1 , AC2, AC3, AC4 are slightly visible in the second gap G2 between the locking portions L1 b, L2b, L3b, L4b. Flowever, these corners will, as shown in figure 5, be hidden behind the locking tongues LT1 , LT2 when they are folded around the locking portions L1 b, L2b, L3, L4b. As shown e.g. in figure 1 a, the longitudinally facing edges of the respective gap portion L1 a, L2a, L3a, L4a extends along the transversal direction T as seen in the flat laid state of the package. These edges extending along the brackets L1 aT, L2aT, L3aT, L4aT in figure 1 will, as seen in figures 4-6, extend along a vertical direction when the package is in its erected state. This reduces the risk that a user gripping the package by the handles unintentionally excerpts a force onto the gap portions L1a, L2a, L3a, L4a.
As shown in figure 1 a, the respective locking tongue LT1 , LT2 may further comprise a base portion LT 1”, LT2” having a transversal extension LT1T”, LT2T” being greater than the respective transversal extension LT1T, LT2T of the insertion portion LTT, LT2’, wherein the transversal extension LT1T”, LT2T” of the respective base portion LT 1”, LT2” is preferably equal to a transversal width W of the bottom panel A2. Such a base portion will, as shown in figure 6, form a cover over the otherwise exposed portions of the locking portions which reduces the risk of anything getting caught by any exposed cut edges of the package as it is handled.
As mentioned above, the package 1 is preferably formed of a blank 1. The blank 1 is preferably formed of a card board or paper based material. At least a major surface of the blank being intended to form an inside of the package 1 is preferably provided with a water resistance improving polymer based coating.
