Definitions
- the invention relates to a medical device that may be used to improve blood circulation, reduce hand shaking caused by essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease or another illness or numbness caused by rheumatoid or neurological disorders.
- the device is meant to improve the quality of life in patients with circulatory disorders.
- Patent application No. US20100174217A1 describes the point vibration therapy device used to alleviate symptoms caused by sensory dysfunction, neuropathy, attention deficit disorder or other diseases.
- the device consists of a vibration source system, a power management system, a housing and a user interface system, which allows adapting frequency and duration of vibrations generated by the vibration source system according to the user needs.
- the device does not have pre-defined vibration characteristics that could be repeated in order to reduce symptoms of hand shaking and numbness or improve blood circulation.
- the shape of the housing is other than that which allows more vibrations to be generated to a hand of the user; the device has to be fastened to the body. There is no option to regulate vibration characteristics autonomously, thus increasing the effectiveness of therapy.
- the function of diagnostics is not supported either.
- Another device - Intellinetix Therapy Gloves (USA, Brownmed ) - is intended for targeted vibration therapy.
- This device comprises small motors vibrating at a high frequency and embedded in a glove connected to an electric source system (www.brownmed.com).
- the device is described as patent US9775769 B2, A641H23/02, as of 03 October 2017.
- the device consists of a compressing glove with small vibrating motors embedded in the material of the glove.
- the motors produce the therapeutic effect of vibrations directly to joints of fingers.
- the effect of vibrations on fingers is produced along with orthotic pressure. However, the effect of vibrations produced this way is much lower and affects only those places where vibrating motors are embedded.
- the device is meant both for compression and vibration therapy in arthritis-affected hands at the same time.
- the device is designed so that the effect of vibrations on the hand is performed via vibrating motors installed at the joints of the hand. Electric signals are sent from the source system. In this way, the effect of vibrations manifests only in a small targeted area, i.e. where a vibrating motor is embedded, which is rather ineffective. Besides, the device is difficult to pull on a hand in case of numbness caused by rheumatoid arthritis.
- the device uses high-range frequencies (usually higher than 30 Hz), thus making a relatively low effect to the human tissue.
- the aim of the present invention is to improve blood circulation and to reduce hand shaking caused by essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease or another disorder as well as numbness caused by rheumatoid or neurological disorder, thus enhancing effectiveness of therapy and life quality in patients with blood circulation disorders.
- the vibration therapy device comprising the housing, the vibration source system, the control system, the power management system, the user interface system and the switch, has its control system embedded in the housing of the device; this control system comprises the interconnected vibration characteristics tracking system with converters and the controller with an additional component of modules attached, which has a diagnostics module, a communication module and an additional units’ module, connected all together or selectively; besides, the controller is on the other side connected to the power management system and the vibration source system that is further connected to the tracking system of produced vibration characteristics.
- the switch which is mounted on the outer part of the housing and connected to the control system and the user interface system, is a button and/or a digital screen and/or a touch- or turn-sensitive element and/or an inert sensor.
- the vibration characteristics tracking system has at least one converter (e.g. to convert the frequency of generated vibrations to electric signals); meanwhile, the vibration source system has an electric motor and/or eccentric mass and/or electromagnet and/or a piezo element and/or a permanent magnet, connected to the vibration characteristics tracking system.
- the vibration source system has an electric motor and/or eccentric mass and/or electromagnet and/or a piezo element and/or a permanent magnet, connected to the vibration characteristics tracking system.
- the housing of the device may be spherical, rectangular, cylindrical or another irregular shape. It may also have additional elevations/indentations formed on the housing and/or covers, belts or other specific shape elements attached.
- the diagnostics module has a unit assessing the patient’s physical condition (e.g. heaviness of hand shaking, progress of therapy) and a self-diagnostics unit (e.g. amperemeter, temperature monitor).
- a unit assessing the patient’s physical condition e.g. heaviness of hand shaking, progress of therapy
- a self-diagnostics unit e.g. amperemeter, temperature monitor
- the communication module has an information exchange unit, e.g. Bluetooth transmitter that connected to external devices such as a cell phone or a tablet PC.
- an information exchange unit e.g. Bluetooth transmitter that connected to external devices such as a cell phone or a tablet PC.
- the additional units’ module has a heating and/or cooling therapy and/or vibration and/or light therapy unit. Besides, the additional units’ module has an identifier connected to the controller (e.g. fingerprint) as well as an interactive physiotherapy performance guide (e.g. light, sound, vibration).
- a heating and/or cooling therapy and/or vibration and/or light therapy unit has an identifier connected to the controller (e.g. fingerprint) as well as an interactive physiotherapy performance guide (e.g. light, sound, vibration).
- Fig. 1 illustrates the component scheme of the vibration therapy device.
- Fig. 2 illustrates the general view of the vibration therapy device.
- Fig. 3 illustrates how the vibration therapy device is to be used.
- Fig. 4 illustrates possible realization of the vibration therapy device cover.
- the vibration therapy device consists of housing 1, vibration source system 2, control system 3, power management system 4, user interface system 5 and tum- on/turn-off/wake-up switch 6, where the control system 3 has the vibration characteristics tracking system 7 with converters and the controller 8 with the additional component of modules 9 attached, consisting of the diagnostics unit 10, the Communication module 11 and the additional units’ module 12.
- the vibration characteristics tracking system 7 has at least one converter, which, for instance, changes the frequency of generated vibrations to electric signals.
- the vibration source system 2 has an electric engine and/or eccentric mass and/or an electromagnet and/or a piezo element and/or a permanent magnet.
- the device switch 6, mounted on the outer part of the housing, may be a button and/or a digital screen and/or a touch screen and/or an inert sensor.
- the diagnostics module 10 of the device has a unit 13 assessing the patient’s functions (e.g. heaviness of hand shaking, therapy progress) as well as a self-diagnostics unit 14 (e.g. amperemeter or temperature monitor).
- the Communication module 11 has an information exchange unit 15 (e.g. Bluetooth connected to external devices 16 such as a cell phone or a tablet PC).
- the additional units’ module 12 has a heating and/or cooling and/or vibration and/or light or another therapy unit 17 as well as an identifier 18 (e.g. fingerprint reader).
- the additional units’ module 12 has an unit 19 interactive physiotherapy performance guide (e.g. light, sound, vibration).
- the housing 1 may also possess additional elevations/indentations (not illustrated in the drawings) formed on the housing as well as covers 20, belts and other specific shape units attached.
- the vibration therapy device is turned-on/off using the switch 6 in the user interface system 5.
- the switch may be a button and/or touch-sensitive screen and/or touch or turn- sensitive element and/or an inert sensor.
- the power management system 4 regulates the electric parameters of the electric circuit, manages and provides information about the battery charge process and the charge level.
- the controller 8 of the control system 3 activates and manages the vibration source system 2, which may be an electric motor with eccentric mass, electromagnet, piezo element or another element or a system able to generate mechanical vibrations. Vibration characteristics (frequency, amplitude) generated by the vibration source system 2 are pre-defined and depend on the patient’s disorder and physical condition. The characteristics are being tracked by the control system 3 via the vibration characteristics tracking system 7. This system has converters that may convert mechanical vibration characteristics parameters to electric signals for the control system 3.
- the controller 8 may be a simple voltage divider and an analogue-to-digital signal converter with an output signal coming to the controller 8 and correlating with some parameter of vibration characteristics generated by the vibration source system 2. Since the controller 8 makes use of the generated vibration characteristics tracking system 7 to obtain information about vibrations at a real time, it may respond to surrounding conditions, such as the grip power of different patient’s hands, changing orientation in space due to different hold, and avoid bias in vibration characteristics by changing the management signal that controls the vibrations source system 2. After a certain period of time, i.e. after 3-30 minutes as shown by conducted experiments, the user is informed about the end of therapy or the time spent.
- the device has a unit 13 assessing the patient’s functional condition, which is an inert sensor, a temperature sensor or another sensor giving a possibility to assess the heaviness of hand shaking, body temperature or another parameter.
- the information obtained by sensors is used to inform the user about the course of therapy and to analyse the effectiveness of therapy.
- Each user has different physiological parameters and different symptoms; therefore, pre-defined vibration characteristics may not be maximally effective for all users.
- neural networking, machine learning and other algorithms are employed; they use the above mentioned information obtained by sensors and the information obtained from users on their own assessment of therapy effectiveness via the user interface system 5 and external devices 16.
- the device also has an additionally installed self-diagnostics unit 14 - a comparator, a temperature sensor or another sensor providing a possibility to assess the strength of electric current, or the level of heating of structural parts, or to measure another parameter in order to assess the condition of the device.
- the device also has the communication module 15 - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ZigBee. They allow the device to share information with external devices 16 such as a cell phone, a tablet PC.
- the additional units’ module 12 has a therapy unit such as ultrasound, heat, light, which provides additional therapy along with vibration therapy, thus saving time and enhancing the effectiveness of the device.
- the additional units’ module 12 has an identifier 18, which allows fast identification of a person using the device, e.g. fingerprint reader.
- the additional units’ module 12 also has the interactive physiotherapy performance guide unit 19 emanating light, sound or providing information about physical therapy exercises, orientation of the device and movement in space. This unit expands the functional possibilities of the device and acts as a physical therapy guide when exercises are performed, may comment on the process and correctness of performance, may give commands.
- the housing 1 (illustrated in Fig. 4) is spherical, but the shapes are unlimited; they may be elliptical, polygonal, rectangular or simply irregular.
- the housing 1 may also have elevations/indentations located on the housing so that upon holding the device in the hand vibrations are directed to the targeted body parts, thus enhancing the effectiveness of therapy, e.g. the housing 1 may have an elevation which is in touch with a specific muscle.
- the new device with all its elements may be applicable to various physical and medical conditions of patients due to vibration characteristics produced in the device that allow more effective vibration therapy and better adjustment to a variety of patients with circulation disorders, hand shaking caused by essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease or other disorders as well as numbness caused by rheumatoid or neurological disorders, thus helping to improve life quality.
- the device has an option of sharing information with an external device, perform additional diagnostics, self-diagnostics, complex therapy, physical therapy and a guide’s function.
