  • Surfactants contained within cleansing compositions play a role in retaining and removing dirt.
  • Surfactants are studied under four groups, i.e. anionic, cationic, amphoteric and nonionic. Anionic surfactants in this group cause severe irritation in the skin and eyes although they lead to intense foam formation. Therefore, surfactants that can be added to the composition of the present invention can be selected from amphoteric and nonionic surfactants. These surfactants can be used alone or in combination.
  • Amphoteric surfactants can be selected from the group that comprises cocamidopropyl betaine, cocodimethylsulfopropyl betaine and lauryl-betaine, wherein cocamidopropyl betaine within this group is preferably used in the present invention alone or in combination with other amphoteric and/or nonionic surfactants as it facilitates foaming of the cleansing composition and especially renders the foam more bulky and creamy with finer particles.
  • the amount of amphoteric surfactant is between 5-30%, preferably 10-25% by weight in the total composition.
  • Nonionic surfactants can be selected from the group that contains sodium cocoamphoacetate, lauryl glucoside, octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether, glyceryl laurate, cocamide DEA and coco-glucoside or a combination thereof.
  • Nonionic surfactant increases the cleansing capacity and stability of the generated foam when used in combination with amphoteric surfactants. Especially the combination of coco-glucoside and cocamidopropyl is effective in generating a softer and smoother foam.
  • the amount of nonionic surfactant(s] is between 1-10%, preferably 1-5% by weight in the total composition.
  • composition described in some embodiments of the invention may contain emollients in order to prevent possible harsh effects on the sensitive skin of a baby.
  • this group helps increase the viscosity of compositions described within the scope of the present invention. While only one emollient can be used, the use of emollients in combination facilitates further enhancing the softness.
  • These emollients can be selected from cetearyl isononanoate, cetearyl octanoate, decyl oleate, glyceryl oleate, isooctyl stearate, isopropyl myristate, dicaprylyl ether, myristyl lactate and dimethicone copolyol. When myristyl lactate and glyceryl oleate are used in combination, they exhibit viscosity-enhancing effects in the compositions that especially contain surfactants.
  • the invention may contain one or more preservatives in order to prevent microbial contamination that can be encountered during storage of the composition and/or to ensure physical stability.
  • This preservative is particularly important from the aspect of ensuring the absence of pathogenic organisms that can lead to eye irritation in newborns. This is because, it is possible to see harmful organism formation in the compositions of the present invention that contain plant extracts.
  • the preservative can be selected from the group that comprises potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. Preservatives can be used alone or in combination.
  • chelating agents can be used to boost the activity of the preservative. Today, the most widely used such agent is EDTA.
  • Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate can be used here, considering that EDTA has recently caused some environmental concerns. Tetrasodium glutamate diacetate can prevent the formation and accumulation of calcium and magnesium soaps as well as other substances that can lead to undesired changes in the product, especially when water hardness is high. Besides, this component, which is biocompatible, is suitable for use in the sensitive and mild composition of the invention. The amount thereof can be maximum 0,5% by weight in the total composition. pH value of the compositions of the invention are of significant importance since they are intended for use especially in babies. Controlled pH values are preferred rather than very high or very low pH values.
  • pH value of the compositions of the invention is between 5-6, and preferably 5,5. Since pH value of the hair and scalp is between 4-6, pH values of the invention are consistent with this value. Keeping the pH at a slightly acidic value is significantly important as it prevents bacteria and fungi development in the hair and scalp.
  • the present invention recommends using a pH-regulating agent in order to keep the acidity at the desired value. This agent can be selected from lactic acid or citric acid group or be a combination thereof. In the formulation of the present invention, lactic acid also has a moisturizing effect.
  • the composition may contain some perfuming components in addition to active agents. These components may be various essences, perfumes or natural plant extracts. However, the amount of perfuming agents in the composition should not be very high in case they are synthetic. High amounts of synthetic perfuming agents, i.e. various perfumes, may irritate the baby's skin. Therefore, the amount of synthetic perfuming agent should preferably be less than 1% by weight in the total composition.
  • compositions described within the scope of the present invention are suitable for topical application and can be in shampoo, cream, gel, lotion or liquid form.
  • the preferred form is the shampoo form.
  • Compositions of the present invention can provide cleansing as well as intensive care. In any case, these compositions are suitable for use in shampoo, hair conditioner, moisturizer and care compositions as well as shower gels or creams. From the aspect of the objects of this invention, shampoo is the preferred form, baby and children's shampoo is a more preferred form and newborn shampoo is the most preferred form.
  • Viscosity value of the compositions described within the scope of the invention should be kept under control in a manner similar to pH. In a preferred embodiment, the viscosity value is 4000-8000 mPas at 20°C.
