L’actionnement en rotation du mamelon génère un mouvement relatif de translation entre l'extrémité filetée du rayon et l’écrou qui est fixe par rapport à la jante, ce qui pennet donc d’ajuster la tension dans le rayon. L’autre extrémité du rayon, quant à elle, comprend une tête d'ancrage insérée dans un trou au niveau du corps de moyeu. Ces fixations mécaniquement réversibles à la fois au niveau de la jante et du coips de moyeu permettent de remplacer individuellement un rayon qui aurait été endommagé tout en conservant la jante, le corps de moyeu ou encore les autres rayons de la roue.
