Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for interactive learning. The users of interactive learning can access the content available on the server and can study a topic based on the list provided by the server. Based on their study, the user can prepare snap-note captured through camera unit (103), voice-note by using microphone (104) or a combination of both which he/she shares on the server for analysis. During analysis, the notes can be checked against a predefined level of study. Further, if required a mentor or server can send the recommended notes to the weaker students to identify their mistakes. The mentor can also send voice recording or snapshot of the notes providing remarks/appreciation to the students for motivating them and for developing healthy competition.

Description

“METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR LEARNING, MONITORING AND
MANAGING THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS”
FIELD OF THE INVENTION:
[0001] The present invention relates to online education system. More particularly, the present invention relates to a device and method for interactive learning.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION:
[0002] Traditional classroom learning is well established and, in many cases, a very effective means of providing education. But unfortunately, such a system of education has not been effective in providing education when it comes to students residing in remote locations. It is well known that in remote locations a student has to travel long distances to attend classes. This is a big reason that many parents either do not send their children to school at all or the child gets discouraged or drops out from school at a young age. Further, if the students want to gain higher education, they have to move to cities where such education is available. Also, classroom based education requires physical infrastructure to be built. It is also difficult to pay attention towards individual performance when it comes to classroom based education system. The individual student’s performance is sometimes overlooked until it is often too late to take corrective measures. Further, a student may not be able to attend a class because of illness etc. and may not be able to cope up with his peers. It may be difficult for a teacher/instructor to repeat what is already taught to every student who has missed the class.
[0003] To remedy these problems, education system has shown tremendous advancement recently. Online learning systems provide a great flexibility to the students for learning any topic of interest from any place. Further, online courses are also available which can be opted by any student and after completion of the course one can earn a certificate or score card as well. However, studying online only provides one way of communication where students get enrolled to a particular course, complete the assignments and get the score or certificate. Currently available e-learning systems do not provide any monitoring of student’s study. Also, it does not provide information whether the student is able to imbibe the subjects which he is currently learning. Further, the currently available systems do not provide any corrective measures in case when the student has learnt the concept incorrectly. Also, there is no such existing e- learning mechanism which can monitor a student and assess his performance simultaneously without waiting for the actual examination.
[0004] Thus, there exists a need for a system which can overcome the challenges and the problems faced by the traditional as well as existing e-learning systems.
OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION:
[0005] An object of the present invention is to aggregate the subject matter for learning of the students and simultaneously monitoring their study duration and knowledge imbibed.
[0006] Another object, of the present invention is to allow the enrolled students to create notes for the subject matter studied and share the knowledge with a peer group or submit the notes to the instructor for evaluation.
[0007] Another object, of the present invention is to allow the students to choose mentors for respective subjects from the network of mentors to keep track of how well they are learning.
[0008] Yet another object, of the present invention is provide the corrective measures to students after evaluation of notes.
[0009] Still another object, of the present invention is to allow creation and propagation of learning content in multiple languages (English, world languages and regional languages) as well as formats that support expression of mathematical equations, graphs, statistics, flow charts etc.
[00010] Yet another object, of the present invention is to recall and remind the previously learned topic in such a manner that the memory of the user/learner can retain the content of the topic for a longer time period.

For example, the content may be best notes available prepared by the peer group or study group. After receiving the content from different sources, the server may collect the content related to same topic in a database 303 of a processing unit 302. The processing unit may comprise a processor 304 which works in conjunction with the database 303 for uploading the content. The same content may be uploaded to a cloud network and from this, the content can be shared with anyone easily.
[00073] Figure 4 discloses the connectivity between the instructor/mentor and the students/users. The instructor or mentor may upload the content related to the topics over a network which can be accessed by the students enrolled in that particular course. The student and instructor may communicate with each other through the server in a communication network. There may be many services available through the network for facilitating effective communication between the instructor/mentor and the students/users such as chat, blog, e-mail, forum etc.
[00074] Figure 5 discloses the method steps performed by the students in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. In step 501, a student may start the online learning device. In step 502, the student has to input the credentials required for authentication. The credentials may be the login id and password or any biometric scan details such as fingerprint, retina scan, face scan or any such means. In step 503, a server will check for the authentication. In case, the authentication is not successful, then the server may direct the user to step 502 where the student may be asked to either register on the online learning system or re-enter his credentials. In case his authentication is approved by the server, he will be directed to step 504. In step 504, the student may enter a topic to study. There may be a topic list already available to the student, there may be a dropdown list available to him from which the student may choose a topic to study. In another embodiment, there may be an option where a student can search for a topic that he wants to study. In step 505, if the topic is available to study, then the student will be directed to step 506, where he can start his course. The camera unit 103 installed on the student device 101 will start monitoring the student. Also, an embedded timer will also get initiated as soon as the student starts reading a topic. The student device 101 is provided with the flexibility to pause the timer and resume the timer. In step 507, student can prepare notes for the topic learnt from the online learning device 101. There are options available to the student to share his notes in the form of snapshots (i.e., snap notes) or in the form of voice notes or in the form of both combined (i.e., note-cast). In step 508, the device 101 will prompt the user to take snapshot of his notes. In an embodiment, the prompt can be present in the form of dialog box, pop-up or notification etc. Each note can be prepared by jotting down using pen and paper and taking a snapshot or by jotting down on the learning device itself. If he disagrees, then he will be directed to step 509, where the device will prompt the student for voice notes. If he still disagrees, then the device 101 will wait for some time as the student may be still in the process of preparing the notes. However, if the student agrees for snapshots then the camera unit 103 of the student device 101 will take the picture or snapshot of the notes prepared by him. Similarly, if he agrees for taking/recording the voice notes, then the microphone 104 of the student device 101 will get enabled to take/record the voice notes and send them to the processing unit 106 for recording purpose. Student may be able to generate the voice notes from the snapshot or vice-versa. After capturing the voice note or snapshot of notes (i.e snap note), in step 512, the device 101 may prompt the student for making the notes available to public. If the student agrees, then the notes will be stored in the shared note section in step 513. Otherwise, the notes will be submitted to the course instructor in step 514. Further, after submission of notes to the mentor, the device 101 may prompt the student to check for the recommended notes (i.e notes recommended by instructor). If the student agrees, then in step 516, the device 101 will direct him to the best notes available which is recommended by the course instructor. If he disagrees, then in step 517, the student may either stop the online learning device 101 or may check for other topics to study. In another embodiment, the user may share the notes on the server for analysis. The server after receiving the notes, compare the notes against best note available for the topic. In another embodiment, the server may send the notes shared by the user with a mentor for evaluation rather than user directly sending to the mentor for evaluation.
[00075] Figure 6 discloses the method steps performed by the instructor/ mentor of course or topic in accordance with an embodiment of present invention. In step 601, the instructor may start the online learning device 102. In step 602, the instructor has to input the credentials required for authentication. The credentials may be the login id and password or any biometric scan details such as fingerprint, retina scan or any other. In step 603, a server will check for the authentication. In case, the authentication is not successful, then, he may be directed to step 602, where, the instructor may be asked to either register on the online learning system or re-enter his credentials. In case his authentication is approved by the server, he will be directed to step 604. In step 604, the instructor may check for the student list who are enrolled in that particular course. In step 605, the instructor may click on any student’s record. In step 606, he may check for the notes submitted by him. If the student has not submitted the notes for evaluation, then in step 607, the instructor may click on any other student record. However, if the notes are available for evaluation, then in step 608, the instructor may evaluate the notes prepared by the student. In step 609, the device 102 will prompt the instructor whether he is satisfied with the performance of the student? If no, then in step 610, as a corrective measure, the instructor may redirect the student towards the recommended notes section. If yes, then in step 611, the device 102 again prompts the instructor whether the performance of student can be considered for recommendation section or best note section. If no, then in step 612, the instructor may provide grade for the submitted notes. If yes, then in step 613, the system may add the notes in recommended section and direct the instructor to step 612 where the instructor can provide grades to the students. After evaluating the students, in step 615, instructor may either stop the instructor device 102 or may check for another student’s record. The same process is followed for the topics of study instead of courses. [00076] As described in figure 7 of the present disclosure, every time a user wants interactive study, a request should be sent by him to the server. In response, he will receive a list a topics for which interactive study sessions are available. In other words, the Server will ensure that the content related to the topic chosen by the user is available in the database. Based on the list provided by the server, the user may select a topic for study. In an exemplary embodiment, the user may select one or more topics for interactive study, however, at one time, he may start only one session for a particular topic. Before the start of the topic, the user can predefine a level of study for him. In other words, the user can set a level of study which he wants to achieve in a particular session. For example, if the user has selected 60% as level of study, the notes prepared by him will be analyzed for 60% of the topic only. In another embodiment, the predefined level may also signify the result of the analysis. For example, if the result of the analysis comes out to be 60% as mentioned in above example, the performance of the user is considered satisfactory, in case the level of study is selected as 60% by the student. The user can select any of the two options or both depending on his requirements. Alternatively, the predefined level can also be chosen by his mentor. In another scenario, the predefined level can be provided based on the peers who are studying the same topic. The level of study can be selected or set on the basis of weighted average of the performance of learners/users in the same age group for each topic In another scenario, the predefined level can be provided on the basis of historical data of the user. For example, the user usually achieves 80% in 2 hours of study. Then, the server may select that the predefined level for the user depending on the duration of session. There can be a number of ways available for this selection, the server may also take combination of the above for selection of predefined level as well. After setting the predefined level of study, the user may start his study and prepare notes for the topic which he/she is studying in that particular session.
[00077] While studying, the user may receive prompt from the server for preparing notes. In an embodiment, the prompt can be present in the form of dialog box, pop-up or notification etc. If the notes are prepared by using a paper and pen/pencil, then the user may take snapshot of the notes prepared by the him, that will be considered as snap notes. Alternatively, if the user wants to retain his understanding about the subject in form of voice. Then he may choose the option of voice notes and in that case, the microphone will record his voice for generation of notes. After completion of this preparation of notes, one may get an option of converting one form of notes to the other. The user may select conversion of snap-notes prepared by him to voice note or voice note prepared by him to snap-note. In another embodiments, the user can combine both snap-note and voice note to create note-cast. As the notes can provide an overview of overall progress of user in terms of how the content is learned and how much time a user has taken for studying a topic etc. The notes prepared by the user can be referred in future if required. Therefore, a user can prepare a list of keyword along with the notes. The keyword may help him to recall the content if required in future. The key word may also be sent to server for storing in the database. In another embodiment, the server may itself extract the keywords from the notes prepared by the user. After completion of this step, the notes will be submitted for analysis. For the analysis, the user can select a mentor from the list of mentors available on the server for analysis of the notes prepared by him or the server may independently analyse the notes prepared by the user based on the best ranked content or notes available for the topic. On analysis, if the user receives a report which indicate that the notes prepared by the user are not meeting the predefined level, then the user has to rework on the notes and submit the same for analysis till the time he gets the confirmation that he has reached at predefined level of study.
[00078] The user device 800 may have all the essential elements or features to perform in above mentioned steps. The transceiver of the user device may send a request for interactive study and receive a list of topics in response to the request . In another embodiment, the functionality of transceiver is achieved with the help of two entities i.e by transmitter and receiver. For example, the transmitter 801 may send a request for interactive study to a server 900. A receiver 802 may receive a list of topics in response to the request sent by the user. A processor 803 may select a topic from the list of topics presented by the server 900. A memory (not shown) is used to store the content available for the topic. The user device 800 may download the content for study. A user- interface 806 along with the processor 803 may display or present a content corresponding to the topic selected. The processor 803 may select a predefined level of study that user is required to achieve during a session of the interactive study. The session can be defined as a time period of study for a particular topic. In other embodiment, the session can be treated as only the time duration which is fixed by either a user or by his mentor or server. Once the user finishes his study, the processor 803 through the server may receive a prompt for preparing the notes which is displayed on the screen of user device 800. A camera 804 and a microphone 805 are coupled to the processor 803 may help the user to prepare the notes for analysis.
[00079] Figure 9 discloses the method steps performed by the server in accordance with an embodiment of present invention. All the content which is to be used for the interactive learning or study has to be uploaded on the server. Once the request for interactive study is received by the server, the server check for the authentication process. The authentication can be done for the registered user as well as for a new user. For a new user, the server will create an account first with all the details required for authentication, whereas for a registered user, the server will check for the authentication details. The authentication details can be a login id and password, biometric scan etc. If the user is an authenticated one, the server will provide a list of topics to the user. Based on the list of topics received from the server, the use4r can select a topic of study. Further, the server also provides a timer to enable the user to choose a session of study. Also, on the basis of selected topic, the server uploads the content related to the topic on the user device. The content provided to the user can be audio-visual or any written matter which enables the user to learn the subject matter. The server may have different options for setting a level of study. In an exemplary embodiment, the level of study can be predefined by the user. In another embodiment, the level of the study can be predefined by the mentor selected by the user or mentor assigned for the topic. In one of the embodiment, the level can also be predefined based on the previous session analysis. In other words, the level of the study can be predefined based on the historical data of the user. The user can also select the duration of session and topic of study for a particular session and this information should be conveyed to the server. Once the session is commenced, the user of the interactive study can start his/her study from the content available for the selected topic. The session can be defined as a time period of study for a particular topic. In other embodiment, the session can be treated as only the time duration which is fixed by either a user or by his mentor or server. Once a predetermined period is lapsed, the server may prompt the user for preparing the notes. The predetermined period can be decided by the server or by the user or by the mentor assigned for the topic.
[00080] The server can prompt for snap-note, if the user agrees, then a camera will become ready for taking the snap-note. In the similar way, if the server prompts the user for voice note and the user agrees, then a microphone will become ready for taking the voice-note. In another embodiment, the user may select both the options and prepare a note- cast. Once the user confirms and submits that, he/she has prepared the notes and his/her notes are ready for analysis. Then, the server received the notes prepared by the user and the notes are considered for the analysis. The analysis over the notes can be done on the basis of the best notes available on the server for the same topic. The notes prepared by the user are compared with those best notes and accordingly, suggestions or feedback is provided to the user for improvement. Based on that analysis a score will be generated for the notes prepared by the user. If the score is within the range of predefined level of study, then the user is graded as meeting the satisfactory level. In case, the notes provided by the user are meeting all the criteria set for the best notes and include all the keyword listed in the content then the notes can be ranked in the best note section available on the server for the topic. However, if the notes prepared by the user is not at all fulfilling the criteria set for satisfactory level, then the best notes are shared with the user so that he/she can understand the requirement of topic and how the user can learn the topic in an efficient manner.
[00081] Based on the input received by the server, the user can mark correction in the earlier prepared notes or re-prepare the notes and submit the re-prepared notes for analysis. The server will continue to prompt the user for resubmission of notes till the time the notes prepared by the user meets the predefined level. However, if after analysis of the notes 2 time, the server judges that the user is still lacking and is not able to meet the predefined level of study. In that case, the server can send the notes prepared by the user to the mentor assigned for the topic or assigned by the user to take remedial action for the student. The mentor can use his device and can clarify the doubts of the user and can provide the user different way to understand the topic. In this regard, the best note content or the other content required for the topic understand can be availed from the study group of the learners which have similar interests and have vast knowledge about the topic. The content can also be availed or arranged from a learned Society who promotes knowledge sharing etc. The server may check the availability of such groups in a predefined distance and can upload the content related to different topics whenever available. In an embodiment, the user may always send his/her notes to a mentor for evaluation. In another embodiment, the server provides a list of questions to the user after completion of notes. If the student is able to provide correct answer, then based on that analysis, the server can grade the user. The same can be implemented for the above mentioned paragraphs, that is, after preparing the notes, a list of question is provided to the user, if the answers replied by the user after analysis is meeting the predefined level of study, the user is ranked accordingly. In the similar way, if the answers are above the satisfactory level, the user notes or answers are placed in the best note section.
[00082] The user or server can identify the keywords from the notes prepared and a list of the keywords is stored in a database on the server. The keywords are stored for future reference. An advantageous feature of the present invention is to plot a graph based on the analysis. The processor will analyze the notes prepared by the user and based on the time taken for study a particular topic and the output i.e the notes prepared in that duration of study, a graph is plotted to reflect the user performance. In other words, the graph of analysis will indicate that how fast the user can learn a topic. In the similar way, another graph is prepared for indicating for how much time the user’s memory can retain the content which he has learnt earlier. To check for the retention graph, the server will use artificial intelligence or brain mapping techniques. In this technique, whenever, a user go through a different topic which he has not studied earlier and the same process of study has taken, in the last, if the keyword formed from current topic are somewhere relevant or related to any of the topic which he had studied earlier, the server may prompt the user with a question. If the user provides the correct response for the question, this indicates that the memory of user is still able to recall the topic and the related content. However, if the user has given incorrect response, then the server will provide a correct answer to the user based on his earlier notes and prompts the user for viewing the content of his notes. If the user agrees, the content of the earlier prepared notes is shown to the user. If the user disagrees, then either another question is asked, or the user can stop the prompt. Based on the response received from the user, another graph/curve is plotted which is indicative of memory retention. The server may provide the graph plotted for the analysis and the graph plotted for memory retention individually to the user or mentor. In another embodiment, the server can combine these two graphs to plot a complete graph which reflect the overall performance of the user. The same is shown in figure 11.
[00083] The server can also provide an option for correcting the notes. In an embodiment, the option for correcting the notes includes correcting the notes grammatically, appending punctuations, inserting keywords or a combination thereof. The server can also provide an option to insert the content used in the earlier prepared notes in to current notes for elaboration purpose or to bring clarity in the topic/ subject matter. [00084] Figure 10 discloses the method steps performed by the server in accordance with an embodiment of present invention. The server may comprise different components such as receiver 1001, database 1002, processor 1003 etc. There may be other components available, not shown in the figure. The receiver 1001 of the server 1000 receive a request for interactive study from a user. The database 1002 of the server is used to store the content related to each of the topic for interactive study, the notes prepared by the students, the notes which are judged as best notes by the mentors or by the person who has evaluated the notes and found these above satisfactory level. The processor 1003 presents a list of topics to the user, the content for the topics can be availed from the peer group or from a leaned society who are working over the same topic and have vast knowledge over the topic. The processor 1003 may provide the content to the server by searching the content within a predetermined distance range. The processor 1003 receives a topic selected by the user and based on the topic selected by the user, the processor 1003 uploads the content corresponding to the topic selected on the user device 800. Also, after getting the predefined level of study which a user wants to achieve, the processor 1003, monitor the user’s progress and prompting the user for preparing notes based on that level of study. Further, after submission of the notes, the processor 10003 monitor the notes and analyze the notes against the best notes present in the database 1002 or the processor 1003 may send the notes prepared by the user to a mentor assigned for the topic. The processor 1003 keep on sending a prompt to the user device till the time the user has not met the level of study predefined for him.
[00085] The processor 1003 provide a list of questions to the user once the user submits the notes prepared by him to the server 1000. Based on the response obtained, the processor may analyse whether the user is meeting the level of study defined for him or not. In case, the processor 10003 judges that the level is not up to the predefined level of study, the processor may provide best notes prepared by the other users to the user who have submitted the notes. In another embodiment, the processor 1003 may send the notes prepared by the user to the mentor for analysis or evaluation purposes. From the result of analysis, the processor may prepare a graph for user which provide an indication that how fast a user has learnt the topic. However, if the processor 10003 judges that the level of study is not same or above than the predefined level of study, then the processor 1003 may prompt the user to study the topic again and prepare the notes again for analysis. The processor keeps on prompting the user and analysis of notes until the notes prepared by user meets the predefined level of study.
[00086] Even if the user starts learning a different topic and while analyzing the notes prepared by the user for that topic, if the processor 1003 comes across a keyword which is related or relevant with the earlier prepared notes, then the processor 1003 may prompt the user by sending him a question related to the previous topic. If the user successfully provides the response, then the user can add this in to the memory retention graph/curve. Alternatively, if the user has provided incorrect response for the question, then the processor 1003 provides the correct response to the user and prompt the user for viewing the content of the notes prepared earlier with respect to the keyword. From this analysis, the processor 1003 can analyse for how much time the user’s mind can retain a data. Based on this memory retention, the processor 1003 can plot the graph for memory retention as well along with the earlier analysis. The combined graph extracted based on the analysis performed on earlier study of the topic and based on the analysis performed for memory retention is used for checking the overall performance of the user.
[00087] In analyzing the memory retention curve, the present invention uses Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning implementation. Whenever, the user creates notes which includes snap of handwritten note, voice explanation or combination of both. As stated earlier, the processorl003 can convert the snap-note in to voice note and the voice-note can also be converted to snap-note. Hence, the user has both the options available with him. The Processor 1003 will create a library of content on each topic. The library will contain a list of keywords against the topic of study. After analysis, the user is provided report including Grammar, Pronunciation, punctuation correction, Vocabulary - commonly used words of the user. In Automated mind mapping analysis, the current topic is mapped with the topics learnt with keyword matching and showing questions based on topic learned and its subtopics previously learned. If not answered, prompt the user for viewing the earlier prepared notes or tag the notes previously created to be re-exposed for revision. The processor might provide an alert or notification to the user for subsequent revision as well. Based on the alert or notification, the user can choose an option for the revision of content. In this way, the processor can help the user to improve his memory retention capacity. Further, the processor can plot a graph of memory retention and that can help in auto grading i.e in predicting the score of the user against the questions.
[00088] Further, if the processor 1003 anlayse that the user was unsuccessful in meeting the level of study in atleast 2 times, the processor 1003 may suggest the user to connect to a mentor for remedial actions. In other words, the processor 1003 may suggest mentor connect for a topic if there are more mistakes committed by a user than the average number of mistakes of his peers or person in the same study group.
[00089] In this way, the present invention provides a way for the students or users to share the notes with their classmates or in a study group and with the mentors/ instructors. By creative the notes in their own way i.e. either by way of power point presentation, word document, image form or audio/video format etc. will develop the creativity of the user. This will ultimately boost their presentation skills and further enhance their confidence level and inculcate a healthy competitive spirit to outdo their peer members.
[00090] In an embodiment of the present invention, the instructor may search the student details and contact student’s parents for sharing the assessment sheet of the student.
[00091] In another embodiment of the present invention, other users after reading the notes shared by fellow students can post the notes in a repository of notes recommended by peers. That notes will serve as a content in the database for that particular topic.
[00092] In yet another embodiment of present invention, there may be interactive learning through chats, blogs and e-mail where an instructor/ mentor can engage the students in a group for a session where the instructor/mentor may take problems of the students.
