Abstract

The present invention is related with a pen inspection and sorting mechanism. The subject pen inspection and sorting mechanism comprises a control unit which has a round conveyor line including a pen inspection and sorting section and connecting the inspection and sorting sections to each other. In one aspect, the invention is related with a control unit to be used in a pen inspection and sorting mechanism and in another aspect the invention is related with a pen inspection and sorting method.

Description

PEN INSPECTION AND SORTING MECHANISM
Technical Field of the Invention
The present invention is related with a pen inspection and sorting mechanism and enables the automated inspection of the pens following the raw pen manufacturing and to sort out the pens which do not comply with the preferred criteria. The subject pen inspection and sorting mechanism comprises a control unit which has a round conveyor line including a pen inspection and sorting section and connecting the inspection and sorting sections to each other. In one aspect, the invention is related with a control unit to be used in a pen inspection and sorting mechanism and in another aspect the invention is related with a pen inspection and sorting method.
Background of the Invention
One of the most significant steps in raw pen manufacturing is the conduction of the quality control on the manufactured raw pens before cutting or dying processes and the elimination of the pens with certain defects from the ongoing steps of the manufacturing process. In the prior art, such control of the manufactured raw pens in decks was performed by the naked eye. This method, based on manpower both takes a long time and based on the exhaustion or lack of attention on the part of the workers, the defective products were added into the next steps and all the process was interrupted. When the pens, which cannot meet the quality criteria, go through all the process steps, the probability of delivering faulty product to the consumers increased.
Together with the developing technology, more automized methods, which use limited manpower, became more preferable for the inspection of the raw pen manufacturing. In this respect, the cameras connected to a computer unit are preferably used for measuring the pen quality, instead of the human eye. However, development of a mechanism specific to the product is required in order to operate these cameras in a more productive, accurate and well- directed manner, and also to use such cameras for inspection of the mass productions such as pens. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism of this invention is provided in order to meet such requirement. Brief Description of the Figures

The present invention describes a pen inspection and sorting mechanism, wherein said mechanism comprises: a. an inlet conveyor (2) which conveys the pens received from the manufacturing line to the control unit (2), b. a control unit (1) which comprises a round conveyor line (3) on which the pens are carried, a power unit (4) to which the round conveyor line (3) is connected, an inspection section (5) and a sorting section (6) linked by the round conveyor line (3) to each other, c. a programmable logic controller (PLC) to which the control unit (1) is connected, d. a computer unit in which the data received from the control unit (1) are assessed, and which is assigned for transmission of the instructions to the programmable logic controller (PLC), e. an outlet conveyor (7) to which the pens conforming with the criteria are sent from the control unit (1), f. at least one outlet pipe (8-11) to which the pens not conforming with the criteria are sent from the control unit (1), and at least one outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the end of the said outlet pipe (8-11).
In the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention, the inspection section (5) comprises at least one camera (16-21) which views the round conveyor line (3) from at least one side.
In a configuration of the invention, the inspection section (5) comprises at least one pair of cameras (16-17 or 18-19 or 20-21) which views the round conveyor line (3) from one side and from the opposite side. In another configuration of the invention, the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention comprises three pairs of camera (16-17, 18-19, 20-21) which view the round conveyor line (3) of the the inspection section (5) from the right and left side.
The pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention comprises pen carrying receptacles (23) on the conveyor line (3) to accomodate each pen. The power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention may be an electric engine.
In a configuration of the invention, the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention is a servomotor.
In the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention, there is at least one air nozzle which corresponds to the pen carrying receptacles (23) on the round conveyor line (3) of the sorting section (6) and which opens to at least one outlet pipe (8-11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.
Accordingly, in a configuration of the invention, the sorting section (6) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention comprises 4 air nozzles which opens to 4 outlet pipes (8-11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.
In another configuration of the invention, the control unit (1) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism is located inside a receptacle which is closed to be light-proof.
In another configuration of the invention, in the pen inspection and sorting mechanism, the links (22) located on the the round conveyor line (3) are made of castermid. f. at least one air nozzle opening which corresponds to the pen carrying receptacles (23) on the round conveyor line (3) and which opens to at least one outlet pipe (8-11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.
Accordingly, in a configuration of the invention, the links (22) in the round conveyor line (3) of the control unit (11) of the invention are made of castermid.
In another configuration of the invention, the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) in the control unit (11) of the invention is a servomotor.
From another perspective, the invention is related with a pen inspection and sorting method. Said method includes the following steps: a. transmission of the raw pens received from the production to a round conveyor line (3) via an inlet conveyor (2),
b. capturing the views of the pens from both sides by the cameras (16-21) monitoring the round conveyor line (3),
c. transmission of the received images to a computer unit which is conncted to the control unit (1),
d. after the evaluation of the images by the computer unit in accordance with the criteria determined by the use, sending an instruction to the control unit (1) via a programmable logic controller (PLC),
e. In case the pen complies with the determined criteria, i. sending the pen from the round conveyor line (3) to an outlet conveyor (7) by means of an instruction,
f. In case the pen does not comply with the determined criteria,
ii. by means of an instruction, sending the pen, which does not conform to the criteria, to said outlet pipe (8-11) or to an outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the pipe, by means of the air blown through the outlet pipe (8-11) opening to said link by the air nozzle which corresponds to the pen carrying receptacles (23) accommodating the pen on the round conveyor line (3),
wherein, by means of the sent instruction, the pen is directed to a certain outlet pipe (8-11) and to an outlet receptacle (12-15) which opens to the related pipe.
In a configuration of the invention, the links (22) on the round conveyor line (3) used in the pen inspection and sorting method of the invention, are made of castermid. In another configuration of the invention, the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) is a servomotor.
Detailed Description of the Invention
The present invention describes a pen inspection and sorting mechanism. In the known pen control systems, the pens are moved on the flat conveyors supported by the chains or elastic bands. However, the pens are manufactured in high amounts and therefore the production has to run in a certain speed. While speed is required in manufacturing, at the same time, carrying the pens in a stationary manner and with a stable speed is required. Whereas the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention aims to detect the defects by capturing the images of the pens from the right and left sides and to sort out the defective pens. Therefore, the conveyor to be used in the mechanism of the invention, should both move fast and carry the pen in a stationary position in order to enable the camera to capture the image of the pen.
However, an elongation occurs in time as a result of conveying the mass productions such as pens in the flat conveyors of the prior art which are supported by chains or elastic bands. In such case, the image of the pen followed on the line with a camera cannot be successfully captured, false results are obtained in the inspection stage and even the efficiency of the mechanism is lost because of the fact that the defective pens continue to the manufacturing process.
In order to avoid this problem, a round conveyor line (3) is used in the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention, in order to provide that the pens are always carried on the same level and in a certain speed particularly in the section where the images of the pens are captured. In the round conveyor line (3) of the invention, the problem of elongation observed in the conveyors which are supported by chains or elastic bands, is not seen and it becomes possible to view the products with a limited surface area, such as pens, by the cameras. Otherwise, the elongation of the conveyor would cause the pens to be replaced while passing in front of the camera during the carrying operation and the obtained values would have deviations.
Another aspect of the invention is that in the pen inspection and sorting mechanism, there are links (22) in which each pen is accommodated in the round conveyor line (3) available in the control unit (1). By means of these links, the pens remain still while being carried on the line and the edges of the pens with a limited surface area can be captured properly while passing from the camera to enable a healthy evaluation.
In a configuration of the invention, the links (22) placed on the round conveyor line (3) are preferably made of castermid. Castermid is not a material with disadvantages such as replacement or elongation and therefore it is another element of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention which enables to carry the pens in the preferred stationary manner.
In another configuration of the invention, there are pen carrying receptacles (23) in which the pens are accommodated on the round conveyor line (3). Since the subject carrying receptacles (23) are designed in a round wheel shape, they can fit to the different profiles such as angular, triangle, jumbo.
The round conveyor line (3) used in the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention is connected to a power unit (4). This power unit is preferably an electric engine and is particularly a servomotor. The servomotors are particularly preferred since their rotation speeds can be adjusted and they enable to rotate in a stable speed by means of the rotation angles determined by the pulses they receive in specific time intervals. The round conveyor line (3) used in the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention can be monitored by the cameras (16-21) from both sides as the right and the left side. Each pair of cameras comprised of a right and left camera (16-17; 18-19; 20-21) can be assigned with inspecting a certain criteria. Accordingly, in a configuration of the invention, the first pair of cameras (16-17) monitoring the round conveyor line (3) can control the enamel quality. The enamel quality is related with the parameters such as the existence of the enamel and whether it is broken or disconnected.
In another configuration of the invention, the second pair of camera (18-19) monitoring the round conveyor line (3) may check the parameters related with the availability of the fractions, cracks or cutoff in the slat surrounding the enamel in raw pens.
In another configuration of the invention, the third camera pair (20-21) monitoring the round conveyor line (3) may check the parameters related with the adjacent enamel, the color control, the blade burns and the color alterations on the surface of the pen.
In another configuration of the invention, there may be three pairs of cameras (16-17, 18-19, 20-21) monitoring the round conveyor line (3) and said camera pairs can be placed in the right and left sides of the round conveyor line (3) in order to examine the lateral surfaces of the ends of the pens in terms of the parameters such as enamel quality, slat quality and lateral enamel formation.
The control unit (1) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention may be placed in a dark receptacle in order to enable the cameras (16-21) to obtain better images and to prevent the probable deviations in the tests.
The pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention inspects one side and another side of the pens and seperates the pens based on the side with the determined defect. Accordingly, the pens, whose one side, for instance right side, is determined to be defective are sent to the right evaluation receptacle or to the third outlet receptacle (14), and the pens, whose one side, for instance left side, is determined to be defective are sent to the left evaluation receptacle or to the fourth outlet receptacle (15). In case a defect is determined on both sides of the pens of the invention, the pens are sent to the right and left evaluation receptacle or to the second outlet receptacle (13). 5
The level of defects determined on the pens which are sent to the right or left or to the right and left evaluation receptacles, in other words respectively to the third outlet receptacle (14) or to the fourth outlet receptacle (15) or to the second outlet receptacle (13) is relatively lower. The defects on these pens are re-evaluated by the user with naked eye and in some cases, the pens can be re-included in the manufacturing process after some manual operations. For instance, a defect determined to be merely on the limited lateral surface of the pen, can be re-included in the manufacturing process by the user since the pen will be cut or sharpened later. Separation of the pens depending on the defective surface will enable the user to always look at the same side of the pen in the evaluation outlet receptacles (13, 14, 15) during the evaluation, which prevents loss of time and implementation mistakes.
In the mechanism of the invention, in case the defect of a pen is unacceptable, the pen is sent to the reject receptacle or to the first outlet receptacle (12).
In the mechanism of the invention the parameters used for fault detection are entered into the computer unit by the user and the computer unit performs the inspection and sorting based on such parameters by means of the programmable logic controller (PLC) connected to the computer unit and by means of the cameras.
For instance, in case a defective pen is detected in the inspection section, a warning is sent to the computer unit by means of the PLC and the computer unit marks the pen carrying receptacle (23) accommodating the defective pen in the round pen unit by re- instructing the PLC. When the pen carrying receptacle signed in accordance with the defective pen surface comes in front of the related outlet pipe (8-11), the air nozzle opened to th subject outlet pipe (8-11) is operated and pushes the pen into said outlet pipe (8-11), which enables to push the pen into an outlet receptacle (12-15) relative to the defective lateral surface.
In this respect, the invention describes a pen inspection and sorting mechanism from another perspective. In this method, the raw pens received from the production are conveyed to a round conveyor line (3) by means of an inlet conveyor (2).
The cameras (16-21), monitoring the round conveyor line (3) detects the defects by capturing the images of the pens from both sides.
The received images are transmitted to a computer unit connected to the control unit (1), wherein the images of the computer unit are evaluated in accordance with the criteria determined by the user.As a result of this evaluation, the computer unit sends instructions to the control unit (1) by means of a programmable logic controller (PLC).
In case the pen conforms to the criteria determined by the user, the pen is sent to an outlet conveyor (7) from the round conveyor line (3). However, in case the pen does not conform to the determined criteria, by means of the instruction sent by the computer unit, the pen not conforming to the criteria is sent to the related outlet pipe (8-1 1) and to the related outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the pipe when the air nozzle corresponding to the link (22) accommodated on the round conveyor line (3) blows air towards the outlet pipe (8-11) opening to the subject link (22). As also described above in details, by means of the sent instruction, the pen is directed to a certain outlet pipe (8-11) and to an outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the related pipe relative to the side which does not confirm to the criteria.
In another aspect, the invention describes a control unit (1) to be used in a pen inspection and sorting mechanism. The subject control unit comprises a round conveyor line (3) which does not cause the above mentioned elongation and flection problems and which has pen carrying receptacles (23) on which each pen can be placed.
At least one pair of cameras which monitor the round conveyor line (3) from one side and from the opposite side, and preferable two and more preferable three pairs of cameras (16-17 or 18-19 or 20-21) are available. Said round conveyor line (3) is connected to a power unit (4). Said power unit is preferably an electric motor and especially a servomotor.
The control unit (1) of the invention is connected to a programmable logic controller (PLC).
The control unit (1) comprises a computer unit in which the data obtained from the cameras are evaluated and which is assigned with transmission of the instructions to said programmable logic controller (PLC).
The control unit of the invention comprises at least one air nozzle which corresponds to the links (22) accommodated in the round conveyor line (3) and which comprises at least one air nozzle opening to at least one outlet pipe (8-1 1) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.

Claims

1. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism, characterized in that it comprises
a. an inlet conveyor (2) which conveys the pens received from the manufacturing line to the control unit (2),
a control unit (1) which comprises a round conveyor line (3) on which the pens are carried, a power unit (4) to which the round conveyor line (3) is connected, an inspection section (5) and a sorting section (6) linked by the round conveyor line (3) to each other,
c. a programmable logic controller (PLC) to which the control unit (1) is connected, d. a computer unit in which the data received from the control unit (1) are assessed, and which is assigned for transmission of the instructions to the programmable logic controller,
an outlet conveyor (7) to which the pens conforming with the criteria are sent from the control unit (1), and
at least one outlet pipe (8-11) to which the pens not conforming with the criteria are sent from the control unit (1), and at least one outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the end of the said outlet pipe (8-11).
2. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that the inspection section (5) comprises at least one camera (16-21) which views the round conveyor line (3) from at least one side.
3. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that the inspection section (5) comprises at least one pair of cameras (16-17 or 18-19 or 20-21) which views the round conveyor line (3) from one side and from the opposite side.
4. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 3, characterized in that the inspection section (5) comprises three pairs of camera (16-17, 18-19, 20-21) which view the round conveyor line (3) of the the inspection section (5) from the right and left side.
5. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that the round conveyor line (3) comprises links (22).
6. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) is an electric engine.
7. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that the electric engine is a servomotor.
8. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises at least one air nozzle which corresponds to the pen carrying receptacles (23) on the round conveyor line (3) of the sorting section (6) and which opens to at least one outlet pipe (8-11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.
9. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to claim 8, characterized in that the sorting section (6) of the pen inspection and sorting mechanism of the invention comprises 4 air nozzles which opens to 4 outlet pipes (8-11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteria.
10. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to any of the previous claims, characterized in that the control unit (1) is located inside a receptacle which is closed to be light-proof.
11. A pen inspection and sorting mechanism according to any of the previous claims, characterized in that the links (22) located on the the round conveyor line (3) are made of castermid.
12. A control unit (1) to be used in a pen inspection and sorting mechanism, characterized in that it comprises
a. a round conveyor line (3) which has pen carrying receptacles (23) to accommodate each pen,
b. at least one pair of cameras (16-17 or 18-19 or 20-21) which views the round conveyor line (3) from one side and from the opposite side,
c. a power unit (4) which is connected to a round conveyor line (3),
d. a programmable logic controller (PLC) which is connected to the control unit (1), e. a computer unit in which the data received from the cameras are assessed and which is assigned for transmission of the instructions to said programmable logic controller (PLC), and
f. at least one air nozzle opening which corresponds to the pen carrying receptacles (23) on the round conveyor line (3) and which opens to at least one outlet pipe (8- 11) receiving the pens not conforming with the criteriai
13. A control unit (1) according to claim 12, characterized in that the links (22) in the round conveyor line (3) of the control unit (11) of the invention are made of castermid and the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) is a servomotor.
14. A pen inspection and sorting method, characterized in that it comprises the following steps: a. transmission of the raw pens received from the production to a round conveyor line (3) via an inlet conveyor (2),
b. capturing the views of the pens from both sides by the cameras (16-21) monitoring the round conveyor line (3),
c. transmission of the received images to a computer unit which is conncted to the control unit (1),
d. after the evaluation of the images by the computer unit in accordance with the criteria determined by the use, sending an instruction to the control unit (1) via a programmable logic controller (PLC),
e. in case the pen complies with the determined criteria,
i. sending the pen from the round conveyor line (3) to an outlet conveyor (7), f. in case the pen does not comply with the determined criteria,
i. by means of an instruction, sending the pen, which does not conform to the criteria, to said outlet pipe (8-11) or to an outlet receptacle (12-15) opening to the pipe, by means of the air blown through the outlet pipe (8-11) opening to said link by the air nozzle which corresponds to the link (22) accommodating the pen on the round conveyor line (3), wherein, by means of the sent instruction, the pen is directed to a certain outlet pipe (8-11) and to an outlet receptacle (12-15) which opens to the related pipe.
15. A method according to claim 14, characterized in that the links (22) on the round conveyor line (3) used in the method are made of castermid and the power unit (4) connected to the round conveyor line (3) is a servomotor.
