It is noted that some of the steps of using the towing device may be performed in an order different than the order described hereinabove.

  • Other suitable modifications in the order of steps may also be possible when connecting the towing device to the towed platform/vehicle and to the towing vehicle.
  • the second arm 2 may be rotated towards the first arm 1 until it lies adjacent to a first side of the first arm 1.
  • the third arm 3 may be rotated towards the first arm 1 until it lies adjacent to a second side the first arm 1.
  • the second side of the first arm is disposed opposite to the first side of the first arm.
  • the folding of the arms 2 and 3 results in the folded device being shorter and more compact than in a non- folded state (such as, for example, the non-folded state illustrated in FIG. 1) and facilitates the storage of the folded device.
  • the tensioning devices 7 and 8 may be detached from the first arm 1, the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 as disclosed hereinabove and may also be stored together with the folded towing device 10.
  • the towing device 10 may be folded as detailed hereinabove without detaching the tensioning devices and stored in the folded state with the tensioning devices 7 and 8 still attached thereto.
  • foldable towing devices of the present application may be quite compact and easy to store in a relatively small space, without compromising the rigidity and performance of the towing devices when they are assembled and tensioned during towing.
  • the tensioning devices 7 and 8 are not limited to the mechanical ratchet type tensioning devices illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, and any other suitable type of device capable of tensioning a chain or a cable and/or capable of applying forces pulling the second arm 2 and/or the third arm 3 of the towing device 10 towards the first arm 1 of the towing device 10, may be used in the towing devices of the present application.
  • the tensioning devices 7 and 8 may be electromechanical cable tensioning devices, or electrical-hydraulic cable tensioning devices, which may be operated by direct current drawn from the battery of the towing car or towing vehicle, or pneumatic tensioning devices, or hydraulic tensioning devices.

  • the angle between the longitudinal axis of the first arm and the longitudinal axis of the second arm may be continuously varied in the range of 0-180 degrees and the angle between the longitudinal axis of the first arm and the longitudinal axis of the third arm may also be continuously varied in the range of 0-180 degrees.
  • those angles may even be varied over a larger range (up to an additional 20-30 degrees, depending, among others, on the distance between the axis of rotation of the second arm and the axis of rotation of the third arm, the dimensions of first arm, the length of the second and third arms and other dimensions of parts of the towing device.
  • the arms of the towing device may be hollow arms to reduce the weight of the towing device, this is not obligatory and in some embodiments of the towing devices, one or more of the arms may be a solid arm that is not hollow.
  • FIG. 8 is a schematic isometric view illustrating a solid arm of a towing device, in accordance with some embodiments of the towing devices of the present application.
  • the arm 42 is a solid but made from a solid material (such as for example aluminum, steel and the like) and has two hollow passages 49A and 49B formed therein.

  • the solid arm 42 may include a tensioning device connector 42R which is attached to the side of the arm 42.
  • the connector 42R may include a ring 42L movably attached to the surface of the side of the arm 2 by a hollow ring retainer 42K.
  • the ring retainer 22K may be welded to the arm 42 (if the arm 2 is made from metal, or may be otherwise attached to the arm 42 by using any other suitable method of attachment (including but not limited to screws, and rivets).
  • the towing devices it may be possible to lock the arms of the towing device in a fixed position while the towing device is in a folded state by using one or more locking mechanisms.
  • Such arm locking mechanisms for securing the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 in the folded position may be useful in preventing these arms from accidentally opening during storage.
  • This locking feature may be particularly useful when the towing device is stored in a car or vehicle, as the car movements and/or acceleration and deceleration of the car may result in opening of the arms of the device.
  • FIG. 9 is a schematic top view of part of another towing device having lockable arms in accordance with some embodiments of the towing devices of the present application.
  • FIG. 10 is a schematic top view illustrating part of the towing device of FIG. 9.
  • FIG. 11 is a schematic cross sectional view of the part of the towing device of FIG. 9 taken along the line XI- XI.
  • the towing device 40 (shown in FIG. 9 without the tensioning devices 7 and 8, for the sake of clarity of illustration) is similar in construction to the device 10 of FIGS. 1- 2, except that the device 40 also includes locking mechanisms 60 and 62 for securing the second arm 2 in a folded position after folding of the second arm into the folded state and for securing the third arm 3 in a folded position after folding of the third arm 3 into the folded state, respectively.
  • the locking mechanism 62 includes two hollow passages 16B and 16C formed within the plates ID and IE of the first arm 1, respectively, and two hollow passages 17A and 17B formed in the third arm 3.
  • the locking mechanism 62 may also include a split locking pins 51.
  • the split locking pin 51 may be securely attached to the third arm 3 by a chain 53 for preventing accidental loss of the split locking pin.
  • the locking mechanism 60 includes two hollow passages 16A and 16D formed within the plates ID and IE of the first arm 1, respectively, and two hollow passages 57 A and 57B (it is noted that the hollow passages 16C, 57A and 57B are not shown in FIGS. 9-11 as they are hidden from view, however, their sizes and positioning may be inferred by referring to the corresponding hollow passages 16C, 17A and 17B as illustrated in FIG. 11).
  • the locking mechanism 60 may also include a split locking pins 52.
  • the split locking pin 52 may be securely attached to the second arm 2 by a chain 54 for preventing accidental loss of the split locking pin 52.
  • the arms 2 and 3 may be folded as disclosed in detail hereinabove for the towing device 10 (see FIG. 2).
  • the hollow passages 16B, 17A, 17B and 16C of the locking mechanism 62 become aligned along a dashed straight line 55 which enables the insertion of the split locking pin 51 through the hollow passages 16B, 17A, 17B and 16C (in a direction schematically represented by the arrow 30) to lock the third arm 3 in place preventing rotational movements thereof.
  • This locking substantially prevents any rotational movements of the third arm.
  • the second arm 2 may also be locked in place after folding by using the locking mechanism 60 in a similar manner to that described for the third arm 3 and the locking mechanism 62, hereinabove.
  • the locking mechanisms 60 and 62 have the advantage of preventing rotational movements of the arms 3 and 2 after locking is performed.
  • split locking pins 51 and 52 are implemented as captive locking pins attached to the plate ID by the chains 53 and 54, respectively, this is not obligatory and the split locking pins 51 and 52 may be used without the chains 53 and 54.
  • the locking mechanisms contemplated herein for locking the first and second arms in place after folding are by no means limited to the locking mechanisms 60 and 62 of FIGS. 9-11. Rather, many other different types of locking mechanisms may be used in some embodiments of the towing devices of the present application.
  • the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 may be held alongside the first arm 1 in the folded state by one or more spring-like U shaped securing clips (not shown) that may be captive or non-captive to the towing device.
  • one or more circular or annular closed bands made from a strong elastic material (such as for example, rubber, synthetic rubber or any other strong elastomer based material) may be used to hold the first arm 1 the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 together in the folded state.
  • a strong elastic material such as for example, rubber, synthetic rubber or any other strong elastomer based material
  • any suitable type of mechanism(s) or device(s) capable of preventing rotational movements of the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 with respect to the first arm 1 when the device is in the folded state may be used as a locking mechanism.
  • the towing device may be configured as the towing device 10, the first arm 1, the second arm 2 and the third arm 3 are hollow steel or iron arms having a square cross section, having a wall thickness of 3.2 millimeter and outer dimensions of 50X50 millimeters.
  • the length of the arms 1, 2, and 3 is 950 millimeters.
  • the plates ID and IE are welded to the second end of the first arm and each of the plates ID and 1 E is a flat rectangular steel plate having the dimensions of 190 X 80 X 10 millimeter (length X width X thickness).
  • the open passages IF, 1H, 1G and 1L are circular holes having a diameter of 13 millimeter.
  • the distance between the centers of the open passages IF and 1H is 140 millimeter and the distance between the centers of the open passages 1G and 1L is 140 millimeter.
  • the open passages 2F, 2E, 3F and 3E are circular holes having a diameter of 13 millimeter.
  • the bolts 5A and 5B are steel bolts having a length of 100 millimeter and a diameter of 12 millimeter and the nuts 5C and 5D are matching Nylock nuts with internal diameter of 12 millimeter.
  • the open passages 2J, 21, 3J and 31 are circular holes having a diameter of 16 millimeter. Two bolts having a length of 70 millimeter and a diameter of 15 millimeter with two matching Nylock nuts may be used to attach the ends 2B and 3B to the towed vehicle or towed platform.
  • the above indicated exemplary dimensions and materials are given by way of example only and some or all of the above dimensions and/or materials may be changed if necessary, depending, inter alia, on the strength and other mechanical properties of the materials use for constructing the towing device, the forces applicable by the tensioning devices to the arms of the towing device, the legal requirements for total towing device length (in the rigidized state, during towing) in the country or state in which the towing device is sold and used, and other practical and manufacturing considerations.
  • towing devices and towing kits disclosed in the present application are suitable for off-road towing as well as for on-road towing and may be used for towing a disabled or malfunctioning vehicle in need of repair by another towing vehicle.
  • the towing devices and towing kits may also be used to tow a functioning platform or vehicle on-road or off-road.
  • the towing devices disclosed in the present application may be commercially marketed in different configurations.
  • the towing device may include the assembled first, second and third arms without any tensioning devices (for example, the towing device 10 may include the first arm 1 the second arm 2 and the third arm assembled as illustrated in FIG. 2 but not including the tensioning devices 7 and 8).
  • the buyer of the towing device may then separately purchase from a different source two suitable tensioning devices (such as for example, two of the tensioning devices commercially available from Dixie Industries, TN, USA., or from Patterson Manufacturing, Pittsburg, PA, USA., as disclosed hereinabove in detail) and use them for suitably tensioning the arms and rigidizing the towing device during towing.
  • the towing device product commercially sold may be a towing kit including the three assembled arms and two tensioning devices.
  • the towing kit may include the first arm 1 the second arm 2 and the third arm assembled together as illustrated in FIG. 2 and also includes the tensioning devices 7 and 8).
  • the tensioning devices included in the towing kit may be ratchet tumbuckles, as disclosed hereinabove.
  • the tensioning devices may be any of the types of tensioning devices disclosed hereinabove, such as, for example, mechanical manually operated tensioning devices, hydraulic tensioning devices, electromechanical tensioning devices, pneumatic tensioning devices or any other suitable types of tensioning devices.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un dispositif de remorquage pliant comprenant un premier bras comportant une première extrémité pouvant être fixée de manière amovible à un véhicule de remorquage et une seconde extrémité. Le premier bras peut être relié à une première extrémité d'un premier dispositif de tension et à une première extrémité d'un second dispositif de tension. Le dispositif comprend un deuxième bras comportant une première extrémité fixée rotative et mobile à la seconde extrémité du premier bras et une seconde extrémité pouvant être fixée amovible à un premier élément d'amarrage d'une plate-forme remorquée. Le deuxième bras peut être relié à une seconde extrémité du premier dispositif de tension. Le dispositif comprend également un troisième bras ayant une première extrémité fixée rotative et mobile à la seconde extrémité du premier bras et une seconde extrémité pouvant être fixée amovible à un second élément d'amarrage de la plate-forme remorquée. Le troisième bras peut être relié à une seconde extrémité du second dispositif de tension.
