Description

TAMPER INDICATING CLOSING DEVICE
Field of the invention
The present invention relates to a tamper indicating closing device for packagings, such as bottles and containers.
Background
Closing devices for packagings / containers (hereinafter for the sake of understanding and convenience, packaging is referred to as container, but it is within the scope to include other packagings, which are not known as containers) are well known. It is also known to provide such closing devices with a seal that must be broken to open the device for the first time. A broken seal indicates that the device has been opened at least one time. Such closing devices normally have a closing cap rotatably mounted on a base part and securely engaged thereto.
International patent publication WO2015028959 A1 discloses an embodiment where the cap comprises grooves/depressions on top of the inner part and a projecting part from the underside of the outer part's top which fits into the recess, where the projecting part is designed to be guided along the groove when the outer part is rotated, and further to the end of the groove. The purpose of the mechanism is to provide an axial shift between the inner part and the top of the outer part, and thereby provide an indication of whether the cap has been opened.
Similarly, DE29600635U U1 comprises a set with barbs/ratchets 12 which together with the sealing disk's 2 cam 15 contribute in preventing that the cap 1 can be rotated back to an initial position, but these ratchets/barbs 12 are provided on the underside if the cap 1 itself and can been seen to be ratchets 12 for the cam 15 of the sealing disk. The ratchets/barbs are therefore not provided in any recess/groove in an inner part of a stopper, and it does not describe any outer part comprising a pin/peg running past the barbs/ratchets, such as in present invention. International publication WO2006099854 discloses a comparatively simpler construction, however according to this teaching there is a coupling device which fixes the inner part and the outer part with regard to one another in a defined angular position after the container is opened for the first time. There are two differently fashioned visible surfaces on the inner part, which are opposite to a viewing opening, on the outer part. After breaking opening of the seal, one must perceive this angular position between the outer unit and the inner unit visually and/or tacitely on the visible surfaces in the viewing opening. Hence, the above document also does not teach a clear indication of tampering/breaking opening of seal, after the closing device locks the two parts subsequent to a first opening/ tampering.
Objects of the invention
An object of the present invention may be to provide a tamper indicating closing device for a packaging/container, which ensures that a specifically identifiable area is visible after breaking open of the seal and after the closing device has again subsequently closed the packagings/container, thereby indicating that seal has been actually broken.
Another object of the invention may be to provide a tamper-indicating closing device, which indicates if a first opening has occurred, irrespective of the presence of a seal that can be broken. It may be another object of the present invention to provide a tamper indicating closing device for a packaging/container, which has a simple construction.
It may be a further object of the present invention to provide tamper indicating closing device for a packaging/container, which is less costly.
How the other objects and other associated objects are fulfilled, will be clear from the description hereinafter. Summary of the invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tamper indicating closing device, configured to close and open a product opening. The closing device comprises a base part comprising the product opening inside a sleeve portion, and a closing cap configured to close the product opening when rotated onto the sleeve portion in a closing rotational direction, as the sleeve portion and the closing cap are configured to enter into a threaded engagement. The tamper indicating closing device further comprises an indication ring that is arranged on an external face of the sleeve portion and that comprises a ring indicator configured to indicate the rotational position of the indication ring with respect to the base part. Moreover, the indication ring is configured to rotate from an initial position into an end position along with a rotational movement of the closing cap during a first opening movement of the closing cap. The indication ring and/or the sleeve portion comprise an indication ring retaining means configured to retain the indication ring from rotating back in a closing rotational direction when in the end position. Moreover, the indication ring and/or the sleeve portion comprise a halting means configured to halt the indication ring from rotating in an opening rotational direction when in the end position.
Preferred embodiments and other possible features of the first aspect of the invention will appear from the appended dependent claims.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a tamper indicating closing device for a packaging comprising an outer member rotatably secured to an inner member to form, with a seal, a sealed and assembled single unit. The outer member has at least one securing element located at its inner surface, which, after breaking of the seal can securely engage with at least one receiving section of the inner member, located at its top portion or outer walls, in a manner such that, the two members get locked as a single unit with an opening at the top of the outer member, permanently located atop an easily identifiable area, at the top of the inner member. The securing element is a pin and the receiving section is a recess/depression. In the event of the outer member being rotated in the opening direction for the first time, the pin moves freely in the recess/depression so as to arrive at its end position for turning the inner member to break the seal and simultaneously, locks the two members as a single unit, so that the opening continues to remain atop the easily identifiable area permanently. The recess/depression has clearly defined bottom and side walls and is provided with barb(s)/ratchets along its side walls and/or bottom walls, thereby preventing the pin from retracting back in the recess/depression, from its end position (b) inside the recess/depression.
Preferably, the identifiable top portion of the inner member has a colour, different from its rest of the top portion.
The outer walls of the inner member can be provided with at least one layer of grooves which fits into complementary rings along the inner walls of the outer member, thereby locking the outer member with the inner member as a single unit.
Other possible features in association with the second aspect of the invention will appear from the dependent claims. Brief description of the drawings

Detailed description of example embodiments
Fig. 1 illustrates a tamper-indicating closing device 100 according to the first aspect of the invention in an exploded view. The closing device 100 comprises three main parts, a base part 101 , a closing cap 103, and an indication ring 105. In the present example, the base part 101 comprises a base plate 107. The base plate may in a typical embodiment be attached to the upper face of a packaging, such as a juice container (not shown). Extending vertically up from the base plate 107 is a sleeve portion 109. The sleeve portion 109 encircles a product opening 1 1 1 , through which a product inside the packaging may leave the packaging. Thus, for instance, when being used on a juice container, the juice may be poured out of the container through the product opening 1 1 1 .
As is common within these types of closing devices, the closing cap 103 is configured to close the product opening 1 1 1 by being threaded onto the sleeve portion 109 of the base part 101 . By lowering the closing cap 103 onto the sleeve portion 109 and rotating the closing cap 103 in a closing rotating direction, threads 1 13 arranged on the sleeve portion 109 will engage with the closing cap 103, and ultimately provide a closing connection between the two parts.
The sleeve portion 109 is in the present example embodiment vertically separated into a threaded section 1 15 and an indication ring control section 1 17. The threaded section 1 15 is provided with said threads 1 13 and is arranged vertically above the indication ring control section 1 17.
The indication ring control section 1 17 is configured be located inside the indication ring 105. I.e. the indication ring 105 is configured to encircle the indication ring control section 1 17 of the sleeve portion 109. The indication ring 105 has a ring indicator 1 19 arranged on its outer, radially facing surface. The indication ring 105 is configured to be rotated along with the closing cap 103 in the opening rotating direction, thereby changing the position of the ring indicator 1 19. This will be explained in the following.
On a radially inwardly facing face of the indication ring 105, there is a retaining element 121 , which in the present embodiment is in the form of a protrusion. When in an initial rotational position, which is the position of the indication ring 105 when the closing device 100 has never been opened, the protrusion 121 is located at an initial position 123 on the indication ring control section 1 17.
When the protrusion 121 is in the initial position 123, meaning that the closing device 100 never has been opened, the closing cap 103 is arranged in a closing state on the base part 103.
When the closing device 100 is opened for the very first time, the indication ring 105 is rotated an angular distance along with the closing cap 103. To make this occur, a releasable connection is provided between the indication ring 105 and the closing cap 103. Such a releasable connection may be provided in different ways. For instance, one may design the two parts in such way that there is a sufficient friction between them, so that when the closing cap is rotated in the opening direction, the indication ring will follow. Alternatively (or in addition), one may use a glue or adhesive, or one may provide a weld between them that is configured to snap / break after having fulfilled its purpose.
The indication ring control section 1 17 of the sleeve portion 109 is provided with an indication ring retaining means 125. The indication ring retaining means 125 is configured to allow the indication ring 105 to rotate along the opening rotational direction, but to retain the indication ring 105 from rotating along the closing rotational direction. Hence, when the closing device 100 is opened for the very first time, the indication ring 105 will rotate along with the closing cap 103 for some angular distance. When this takes place, the protrusion 121 is moved past the indication ring retaining means 125.
While one indication ring retaining means 125 would suffice to prevent the reverse rotation of the indication ring 105, there are in the shown embodiment arranged three such indication ring retaining means 125. These are distributed along a portion of the perimeter of the sleeve portion 109.
The indication ring retaining means 125 has a retaining edge 125a (Fig. 2) that will abut against the protrusion 121 of the indication ring 105 if the latter is attempted to be rotated in the closing direction. Consequently, the abutment between the retaining edge 125a and the protrusion 121 stops the reverse rotation, i.e. a rotation in the closing direction, of the indication ring 105.
During the very first opening procedure, the indication ring 105 will move along with the closing cap 103 until being halted at an end position 127. At the end position 127 there is arranged a halting means 129. In the shown embodiment, the halting means 129 is in the form of an edge that protrudes out from the radially outward face of the sleeve portion 109. When reaching the end position 127, the protrusion 121 will abut the halting means 129, and thus halt the rotation of the indication ring 103.
In order to let the closing cap 103 continue its rotation in the rotational opening direction when the indication ring 105 is halted, the releasable connection between the indication ring 105 and the closing cap 103 must be weaker than the engagement between the protrusion 121 and the halting means 129.
After the first opening of the closing device, the protrusion 121 has been moved from the initial position 123 and into the end position 127, where it will remain. During this movement, the ring indicator 1 19 on the indication ring 105 has moved a corresponding angular distance.
The base part 101 comprises a non-opened condition indicator 131 and an opened condition indicator 133. These are in the shown embodiment arranged on the base plate 107. When the closing device 100 never has been opened, the ring indicator 1 19 is configured to point at the non-opened condition indicator 131 . This is the angular position of the indication ring 105 shown in Fig. 2.
When the closing device 100 has been opened for the first time, the indication ring 105 is rotated as discussed above, and the ring indicator 1 19 is hence rotated into a new position where it points at the opened condition indicator 133. Since it is not possible to rotate the indication ring 105 away from this position, the indicator 133 will remain in this position, thus indicating that the closing device has been opened at least one time.
As the skilled person will appreciate, other types of non-opened and opened indicators 131 , 133 than what is shown here are possible. For instance, single letters or even words may be arranged on the base plate or on the wall of the packaging, such as on the carton of a juice container. Furthermore, other types of ring indicators 1 19 than what is shown here are also possible, such as for instance a green-coloured portion of the ring. The indication ring control section 1 17 comprises a groove 135 that extends about the indication ring control section 1 17. As can be seen in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, the groove 135 is interrupted at the initial position 123 and the end position 127, as well as between the indication ring retaining means 125. The indication ring control section 1 17 has a main perimeter portion 137 that extends about a large portion of the indication ring control section 1 17, and along which the groove 135 is arranged. Moreover, parts of the groove 135 are also arranged in the indication ring retaining means 125.
The groove 135 is configured to engage with a circular profile 139 that is arranged on the radially inwardly facing surface of the indication ring 105. The engagement between the groove 135 and the circular profile 139 ensures that the indication ring 105 is not lifted up from its position on the indication ring control section 1 17. As can be seen in Fig. 2, the circular profile 139 is interrupted by the retaining element 121 (protrusion).
Notably, with the shown embodiment, due to the design of the indication ring retaining means 125, of which there are three in the shown embodiment, and the retaining element 121 , a clicking sound may be produced when the closing device is opened for the first time. The indication ring retaining means 125 comprises a lifting surface 125b, on which the retaining element 121 climbs when being rotated in the opening direction. When falling off the indication ring retaining means 125, at the position of the retaining edge 125a, the retaining element 121 will fall back down towards the indication ring control section 1 17, and then make a clicking sound.
One will also be able to feel this sensation in the closing cap 103 when opening it for the first time, since this rapid movement in the indication ring will be transferred to the closing cap 103 as small vibrations or the like. This may be particularly advantageous for deaf users or for blind users.
To make the closing device suitable for blind users, it is advantageous to design the ring indicator 1 19, the non-opened indicator 131 and the opened indicator 133 as structural parts, so that the user may feel the position of the ring indicator 1 19 with respect to the non-opened and opened indicators 131 , 133.
In the following, embodiments of the second aspect of the invention will be discussed. Referring to Fig. 3a the top portion of the inner member 10 is shown. It has an easily identifiable portion 13, which may have a colour different from the rest. However, it is not always the colour, which should easily identify it as it would be clear from subsequent embodiments. Grooves 14 are present along the outer edge of the inner member 10. There is also a depression/recess 12. It has well defined sidewalls and bottom. The depression 12 has barbs/ratchets along its side and bottom walls. Referring to Fig. 3b the outer member 30 has an opening 32 at its top. The inner portion of this member 30 has rings 33, which match with the grooves 14 of the inner member 10. These features would be very clear from the bottom inner view in Fig. 3c. From Fig. 3c, it can be seen that the inner portion has a pin 31 . This fits into the depression 12 of the inner member 10. These will be elaborated a little later, while explaining the functioning.
Referring to Fig. 3d, it shows the bottom inner portion of the inner member 10. It has internal threads 1 1 , which matches with the external threads (not shown) of the package.
Fig.s 2a, 2b, 2c and 2d explain a further embodiment and the like features indicated by like numerical, are not elaborated again and those correspond to what is described in Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1d respectively. However, there are two additional features.
Referring to Fig. 4a, the identifiable top portion 13 has a ridge 16 for enhancing the process of securely locking the outer member 30 and the inner member 10. The ridge 16 supports the pin 31 while first opening of the device for breaking the seal. In all subsequent closing events, the ridge 16 is visible through the opening 32 in the top member 30, since the pin 31 locks the opening 32 atop the ridge 16.
It would be also clear, that the top portion of the inner member 10 has another ridge 17 making an angle with the first ridge 16, which comes out through the opening 32 during closing of the device and securely engages the outer member 30 with the inner member 10.
The above features would be further clear after understanding the elaborate functioning, described a little later.
Fig.s 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d explain a further embodiment and the like features indicated by like numerical, are not elaborated and those correspond to what is described in Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d respectively. However, there are few additional features.
The identifiable top portion 13 of the inner member 10 is an elevated portion 18. This comes out of the opening 32 when the two parts 10, 32 are locked. It can be pushed inside for strengthening the pin 31 during opening/closing phase.
It would be particularly clear from Fig.s 3a and 3c that instead of one pin 31 as in Fig. 3c and instead of one recess 12 as in Fig. 3a there are small pins 34 which securely engages with the complementary grooves 19 for securely locking the outer member 30 with the inner member 10.
Fig.s 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d explain a further embodiment and the like features indicated by like numerical, are not elaborated and those correspond to what is described in Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d respectively. However, there are few additional features.
Referring to Fig. 6a the outer wall of the inner member 10 is provided with barbs/ratchets 22. Referring to Fig. 6c, the inner wall of the outer member 30 is provided with a raised portion 35 that can slide past the barbs/ratchets 22 while rotating of the outer member 30 about the inner member 10 in opening direction.
Referring to Fig.s 4a, 4c and 4d, the raised portion 35, cannot slide back after the outer member 30 has reached its maximum possible opening position, due to presence of locking latches 21 , 22 suitably positioned along the outer wall of the inner unit 10.
Fig.s 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d explain a further embodiment and the like features indicated by like numerical, are not elaborated and those correspond to what is described in Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d respectively. However, there are few additional features. From Fig.s 5a, 5c and 5d, it would be clear that in this embodiment there are two layers of grooves 14, 23 on the outer walls of the inner member 10, which are complementary with and engages to rings 33, 34 on the inner walls of the outer member 30 for locking of the two members 10, 30. That apart from Fig.s 5b and 5c in particular, it would be clear that there exists elevated portions 36 along the inner walls of the outer unit 30, for gripping the outer wall of the inner unit 10.
Having described elaborately the basic structure of the device and the working interrelations of the various components now the functioning of the apparatus is described. For that purpose, all the above Fig.s are again referred, of course without detailing the structural aspects again.
Referring to Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d, when the closing device is in sealed condition, then the opening 32 matches with an area on the top portion of the inner member 10, which is different from the easily identifiable portion 13. For the sake of understanding let us assume that this specific area 13 has a red colour. So, if the device is sealed, then the opening 32 will not match with the red portion 13. The groove 14 along the outer wall of the inner member 10, engages with the matching rings 33 along the inner wall of the outer member 30, so as to form a single assembled unit.
Referring again to Fig. 3a, ideally when the seal is in place, pin 31 should be somewhere between positions a and b in the depression 12. The sealing has to be broken by first time opening of the outer member 30, by rotating the outer member 30 in opening direction, as indicated by arrowhead in Fig. 3a.
Then, the pin 31 freely moves along the depression 12 from a to b and reaches its end point b to turn the inner member 10 and break the seal. In that event, the pin 31 is locked in the depression 12. It cannot return back to its starting point somewhere between a and b, by virtue of the barbs/ratchets 15 along the sidewalls and bottom of the depression 12. At this point, the opening 32 is locked atop the red coloured portion 13. So, even of the closing device is removed in such position as a single unit and re-installed atop the container thereafter, the opening 32 will continue to remain locked atop the red coloured portion 13, clearly indicating that the seal has been tampered. On the contrary when the container, comes from the factory in sealed condition, the closing device is a single assembled unit, but the opening 32 is not atop the red portion 13. This indicates that the seal is in place. This constitutes the crux of the present invention and is the essential principle, on which the present invention works.
It would be clear to persons skilled in the art that the other embodiments also function in the same manner and are not elaborated in detail except what is not described above.
Referring Fig.s 3a, 3b, 3c and 3d, the identifiable top portion 13 of the inner member 10 is an elevated portion 18.
These function exactly in the same manner as the pin 31 and recess 16 in Fig.s 1 a, 1 b, 1 c and 1 d during opening of seal and also during reclosing after breaking of seal to ensure that the opening 32 is locked atop the elevated portion 18 after breaking of seal and reclosing.
The configuration of the pins 34 and the grooves 19 also ensure that once the outer member 30 reaches its maximum possible opening position, the inner member 10 also gets pulled and in that event, the outer member cannot revert back to its starting position. This would be clear from Fig.s 3a and 3c in particular.
Referring to Fig.s 4a, 4b, 4c and 4d the outer wall of the inner member 10 is provided with barbs/ratchets 22. Referring to Fig. 6c, the inner wall of the outer member 30 is provided with a raised portion 35 that can slide past the barbs/ratchets 22 while rotating of the outer member 30 about the inner member 10 in opening direction. Hence, here the barbs/ratchets 22 function as the depression 12 in Fig. 3a and the raised portion 35, function as the pin 31 in Fig. 3c.
The raised portion 35 cannot slide back after the outer member 30 has reached its maximum possible opening position, due to presence of locking latches 21 , 22 suitably positioned along the outer wall of the inner unit 10. These locking latches essentially have the same function as the barbs/ratchets 15 along the walls of the depression 12 in Fig. 3a. Rest of the features and functioning are same.
Fig.s 5a, 5b, 5c and 5d, it would be clear that this embodiment functions in an identical fashion as what is described with reference to Fig.s 1 , 1 b, 1 c and 1d. However, in this embodiment there are two layers of grooves 14, 23 on the outer walls of the inner member 10, which are complementary with and securely engages to rings 33, 34 on the inner walls of the outer member 30 for locking of the two members 10, 30. The elevated portions 36 along the inner walls of the outer unit 30 ensure gripping the outer wall of the inner unit 10.
From the description with reference to the drawings, it would be clear to persons skilled in the art that all objectives of the invention have been achieved. The clear indication in the area 13, whenever visible from the opening 32, will always indicate tampering, even if the closing device is perfectly atop the container in closed condition. If the device is above the container in closed condition and such area 13 is not visible, then one can be sure that the seal is in place. This is simple and clear way of identification. The construction is also simple and consequently the cost of the closing device.
The present invention has been described with reference to some preferred embodiments and some drawings for the sake of understanding only and it should be clear to persons skilled in the art that the present invention includes all legitimate modifications within the ambit of what has been described hereinbefore and claimed in the appended claims.
