Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating a continuously variable transmission (2) for transmitting mechanical energy between an internal combustion engine (1) and a driven wheel (3) in a motor vehicle at a transmission ratio that is continuously variable between a most deceleration speed ratio "LOW" and a most accelerating speed ratio "OD". In an operating mode of the motor vehicle wherein the engine (1) is switched off while the motor vehicle is still moving by opening a clutch (8) provided between the engine (1) and the driven wheel (3), the transmission ratio of the transmission is controlled to a value closer to the said most accelerating ratio "OD" then to the said most decelerating ratio "LOW" to enable a smooth restart of the engine (1) by the closing of the clutch (8) that is not or hardly noticeable by the motor vehicle occupant(s).
