Definitions
- Fire hoses are hoses typically used by fire fighters and are usually capable of withstanding higher than normal temperatures, such as those temperatures that might be encountered while fighting a fire.
- Two general categories of fire hoses are supply hoses and attack hoses.
- Supply hoses generally provide an initial connection to a water source or source of other fluid, such as a pump, hydrant, tank, or other source of water or fluid.
- Attack hoses generally provide a conduit from the initial connection to a position at which the water or other fluid is delivered, such as to fight a fire.
- One type of known attack hose is a generally fabric-covered, flexible hose.
- This hose typically ranges in normal inside diameter from 1.5 to 3 inches (38 to 76 mm) and is generally designed to operate at pressures up to about 400 psi (2,760 kPa).
- the standard length of this type of hose is 50 feet (15.24 m).
- NFPA National Fire Protection Association
- the attack fire hose 100 has an inner hose portion 101 that includes a rubber liner 102, a backing layer 104, and an inner jacket 106.
- the rubber liner 102 may be made of Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) rubber.
- the backing layer 104 may be made of another rubber material.
- the inner jacket 106 may be made of polyester.
- An outer jacket 108 surrounds the inner hose portion 101.
- the outer jacket 108 may also be made of polyester.
- PPE Personal Protective Equipment
- Standard turnout gear for fire fighters typically has three layers of fabric: a bottom layer, typically made of Kevlar® and nylon, that is a thermal barrier for the wearer; a middle layer that is a moisture barrier that breathes; and a top layer that is made of a non-burning PolyBenzImidazole (PBI) stable fiber and Kevlar.
- PBI PolyBenzImidazole
- PBI stable fiber is an organic fiber that provides thermal stability for a wide range of high temperature applications. Generally, PBI fiber will not burn in air, it does not melt or drip and it will retain its strength and flexibility after exposure to flame. As used herein, "will not burn” material is intended to include any material that is classified as does not burn, such as a material rated "0" in the US Government Hazardous Materials Identification System, a material rated "V-0" under UL Flammability rating UL 94, or a material similarly rated under another generally recognized standard.
- This relates more particularly to an attack fire hose capable of withstanding higher temperatures than a conventional attack hose.
- An attack fire hose includes an inner hose an outer shell assembly disposed about the inner hose.
- the inner hose has a liner for the conduction of fluid, an inner backing layer surrounding the liner, and a flexible inner jacket surrounding the backing layer.
- the outer shell assembly has a thermal barrier, an outer backing layer surrounding the thermal barrier, and an outer jacket surrounding the outer backing layer.
- the liner may be leak-proof.
- the liner may be made of EPDM rubber.
- the inner backing layer may be made of rubber.
- the inner jacket may be made of polyester.
- the thermal barrier may function as a heat shield for the inner hose.
- the thermal barrier may be made of a non-woven material.
- the non-woven material may be a spun-lace.
- the spun-lace may include Kevlar® or Nomex®.
- the outer backing layer may include an adhesive backing.
- the outer backing layer may be made of rubber.
- the outer jacket is made of a non-burning material.
- the non-burning material may include Kevlar® or PBI.
- the attack fire hose may further include a moisture barrier provided between one of the inner hose and the thermal barrier, the thermal barrier and the outer backing layer, and the outer backing layer and the outer jacket.
- the attack fire hose may further include a latex outer layer disposed about the outer jacket.
- the attack fire hose may further include calcium stearate powder disposed between at least one of the inner hose and the thermal barrier, and the thermal barrier and the outer backing layer.
- a method for making a hose including the steps of (a) providing an inner hose assembly including a liner surrounded by an inner backing layer and an inner jacket;
- a hose is provided that has a heat resistant barrier to protect ta polyester inner jacket surrounding an EPDM rubber liner.
- FIG. 1 is a layered schematic diagram of a known attack fire hose.
- FIG. 2 is a layered schematic diagram of an attack hose in accordance with at least one embodiment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
- Certain conventional attack hoses were tested to determine how they performed in heat relative to turnout gear, i.e. a turnout gear heat test.
- Three conventional attack hoses were selected: Fire ConceptTM (FC 17), Fire SupremeTM (FS25), and N-DuraTM (NP25). These are all standard double jacket hoses, similar to the hose described above.
- Clothing materials for firefighters are evaluated using a method in which the cut edge of the material is vertically suspended in a Bunsen burner flame for 12 seconds. These standard double jacket hoses were subjected to the turnout gear heat test as described in NFPA 1971 (Par. 7 .1.3).
- an attack hose incorporates an outer jacket having characteristics similar to those found in turnout gear, and a heat resistant barrier to protect the inner hose.
- the attack fire hose 200 has an inner hose portion 201 that includes a liner 202, an inner backing layer 204 and an inner jacket 206.
- the liner 202 is made of rubber and may be EPDM rubber, and, in at least one example, is 1 and 3/4 inches in diameter.
- the inner backing layer 204 is made of rubber, for example a natural rubber or a silicone rubber.
- the inner jacket 206 is made of polyester, for example, forming a polyester filament jacket.
- the attack fire hose 200 has an outer-shell assembly 209 that includes a thermal barrier 210, an outer backing layer (also referred to herein as a backing heat layer or simply heat layer) 212, and an outer jacket 214.
- the thermal barrier 210 is non- woven material, such as a spun-lace.
- the thermal barrier 210 may be made of Kevlar® or Nomex® or both (products of DuPont®).
- the heat layer 212 is made of an extruded EPDM rubber. There may be a clearance provided between the heat layer 212 and the thermal barrier 210 as so desired.
- the outer jacket 214 includes a non-burning material.
- the outer jacket may be formed from PBI or Kevlar® or both.
- the outer jacket 214 and the heat layer 212 are adhered together, for example by an adhesive backing disposed between the outer jacket 214 and the hear layer 212.
- the combination of the outer jacket 214 including PBI or Kevlar® fabric, the heat layer 212 made of EPDM, and the thermal barrier 210 being placed disposed around the inner hose 201 will create a heat barrier that will protect the inner hose 201 at higher temperatures as compared to the conventional attack fire hose 100 and inner hose 101.
- a moisture barrier (not shown) is not required but may be provided between the inner hose 201 and the thermal barrier 210, the thermal barrier 210 and the heat layer 212, or the heat layer 212 and the outer jacket 214, as desired.
- the inner jacket 206 may be disposed about the remainder of the inner hose 201.
- the thermal barrier 210 protects the inner jacket.
- This thermal barrier 210 may be, for example, made of at least one of Kevlar® and Nomex® spun-lace.
- the outer jacket 214 may have stable underpinning to keep shape and improve abrasion resistance. This stable underpinning may be provided by the heat layer 212.
- the heat layer 212 may be formed of a high heat resistance material, such as EPDM rubber and/or Silicone Rubber.
- the heat layer 212 could be an extruded EPDM heat layer with an adhesive between the heat layer 212 and the outer hose jacket 214 and/or between the heat layer 212 and the thermal barrier 210.
- the outer jacket 214 holds all of the components of the attack fire hose 200 together while the heat layer 212 provides heat protection along with the added layer of thermal barrier 210.
- the thickness of the heat layer 212 can be chosen as desired.
- the heat layer 212 may be made of EPDM rubber, silicone rubber, or both.
- An optional latex outer layer (not shown) may be added to the exterior of the outer jacket 214 increase abrasion resistance.
- a Calcium stearate powder may be added between layers, such as between the inner hose 201 and the thermal barrier 210, between the thermal barrier 210 and the heat layer 212, or between any other two layers as desired to reduce binding between the layers.
- One method for making an attack fire hose in accordance with at least one embodiment includes the steps of :
