Definitions
- This patent relates to covers for storage tanks and in particular concerns a new floating cover for storage tanks in general which is provided with a heating system for the material contained in the storage tank itself.
- Prior art includes storage tanks for fluids, for example used in installations for the treatment of industrial or civil effluents or produced by animal husbandry or agricultural activities.
- Prior art also includes storage tanks for effluents in general or digestates requiring covers essentially to reduce uncontrolled emissions of gases into the atmosphere.
- the covers are, however, also used to limit the spread of odours into the surrounding environment, to isolate the contents of the tank from atmospheric precipitation, and to limit the variations in temperature of the fluids contained in the tank.
- these covers have the purpose of reducing the emission of the gases produced by the chemical and physical processes that take place inside the tank into the atmosphere.
- gases include, for example, ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
- Prior art includes floating covers comprised of a tarp suited to be essentially stretched across the exposed surface of the fluid and held there with weights to stabilize their position.
- Prior art also includes floating covers, generally comprising at least one tarp or covering element and at least one floating body positioned in the vicinity of the peripheral edge of the covering element in question.
- floating covers equipped with at least one pump designed to remove the rainwater that might otherwise accumulate on the tarp causing it to sink into the effluent are also known.
- the aforementioned floating body has a substantially tubular shape which is hollow inside and filled with air, is constrained to the peripheral edge of the covering tarp, and goes along the perimeter of the tank.
- Prior art also includes dome-shaped covers, comprising a structure formed by a plurality of radial ribs or ropes, joined at a vertex supported by a rigid upright, and a tarp covering mounted on that structure, where the edge of the tarp and the ends of the radial ribs or ropes themselves rest on the edge of the storage tank to be covered.
- the covers of this type leave a space between the exposed surface of the fluid contained in the storage tank and the tarp itself and this results in the possibility of accumulating and collecting the gases generated by the slurry contained in the tank, for example produced by digestive processes that lead to the formation of biogas.
- the biogas produced can be used as fuel in boilers to heat animal husbandry facilities, such as those intended for breeding and raising livestock, or for personnel areas.
- the biogas produced is not sufficient to heat these premises entirely.
- the object of the present patent is a new floating cover for storage tanks in general, provided with a heating system for the material contained in the storage tank.
- the main objective of the present invention is to increase or maintain the temperature of the material contained in the storage tank, primarily to maximize the production of biogas generated by the digestion of the effluent organic matter.
- Another object of the present invention is to maximize the energy efficiency of any heating system that uses the biogas produced in the storage tank.
- a further object of the present invention is to optimize energy consumption, so that the heat exchange is maximized within the material contained in the storage tank.
- Still another object of the present invention is to reduce the overall energy consumption.
- One advantage of this invention is that is able to be applied to different types of storage tanks, even those already existing, with or without an already existing heating or mixing system.
- the new cover comprises:
- said at least one covering element comprises for example at least one tarp suited to cover the exposed surface of the material contained in said storage tank.
- Said covering element may be rigid or semi-rigid and preferably has a dome shape, suited to remain at least partly raised with respect to the exposed surface of the material to be covered in order to create a buffer space to collect the gas produced.
- Said covering element is preferably thermally insulated in whole or in part, to limit the dispersion of heat from the inside of the storage tank, thus contributing to the reduction of energy consumption.
- Said floating structure preferably comprises at least one floating body or any means suitable to ensure the buoyancy of the covering element, such as at least one floating body substantially central with respect to the covering element and one or more floating bodies in intermediate or peripheral positions with respect to said covering element.
- Said heating means comprise for example a heating circuit with one or more pipes or hoses for the circulation of a heating fluid, said pipes or hoses being secured to the floating structure so as to be at least partially immersed in the material contained in the storage tank.
- Said pipes or hoses are suitably connected to at least one heating system to keep said heating fluid, hot water for example, at a suitable temperature, and with said heating system preferably installed outside the storage tank.
- said heating means may comprise one or more plate heat exchangers suited to heat the material contained in the storage tank.
- said plate heat exchangers may be at least partially immersed in the material in question.
- the new cover comprises at least a supporting frame, in turn secured to said floating structure, and where said heating means are mounted on the structure itself.
- the new cover floats above the exposed surface, varying its position as a function of the level of the upper surface of the material contained in the storage tank or container, ensuring air tightness with respect to the external environment for the accumulation of the gas produced by the material and also the immersion of said aforementioned heating means in the material itself.
- the new cover is also suitably equipped with one or more means to collect the biogas produced and convey it to a plant for use, for example, to an external heating system or to the heating system used for the storage tank itself.
- Said heating system may also be suitably dedicated to the heating of one or more areas, such as rooms intended for the care and shelter of animals or for personnel.
- said biogas can be conveyed to a cogeneration plant for the generation of electricity based on renewable sources.
- the new cover also preferably comprises one or more means to mix the material contained in said storage tank, said mixing means being directly or indirectly constrained to said floating structure and/or said support frame.
- Said mixing means may comprise, for example, electric and/or hydraulic and/or pneumatic mixers which are also useful to even out the temperature of the material in the storage tank, so as to prevent the formation of layers of fluid with different densities and temperatures, and to break up any agglomerations.
- Said heating means, said frame, said floating bodies, and said mixers are made of suitable materials, according to the type of material contained in the storage tank and the type of heating fluid used.
- said materials used may be metal, such as steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminium, etc.
- said material may be plastic such as PVC, HDPE, PEX, etc.
- Figure 1 shows an application of the new cover (1) installed on a tank (V) in general, shown in cross section.
- the new cover (1) is installable on any type of tank (V) intended to contain fluids, for example organic waste from animal husbandry facilities.
- Said tank (V) is suitably made of any type of material including concrete, steel, plastic, etc., depending on the type, quantity and temperature of the material (R) it is destined to contain.
- the new cover (1) comprises in its main parts, at least one covering element (2), at least one floating structure (3) suited to support said covering element (2) and suited to float above the exposed surface (Rl) of the material (R) contained in said tank (V), at least one frame (4) secured to said floating structure (3) and suited to be at least partially immersed in the material (R) contained in said tank (V), and one or more heating means (5, 6) mounted on said frame (4) so as to be at least partly immersed in said material (R) and suited to heat said material (R).
- Said heating means (5) comprise for example a hydraulic heating circuit with one or more tubes (5) distributed on said frame (4) and immersed in said material (R), said pipes (5) being connected to at least one boiler with at least one pump to pump the heating fluid through them.
- Said heating means (6) may also comprise one or more heating plates (6) mounted on said frame (4) and immersed in said material (R).
- the new cover (1) may also comprise one or more mixing means (7), also mounted on said frame (4) and immersed in said material (R), so as to affect the majority of the volume of the material (R) itself.
- Said heating means (5, 6) are preferably placed in close proximity to said mixing means (7), so that the heat exchange takes place in the areas where the speed of the mixed material (R) is greater, thereby also optimizing the heat exchange.
- said covering element (2) has a dome shape, that is, it is suited to leave a space (24) between the exposed surface (Rl) of the material (R) and the covering element (2) itself, for the accumulation of the biogas produced inside the tank (V).
- said covering element (2) is substantially in the shape of a truncated cone or cone or pyramid, comprising a higher central part (21) and a perimeter portion (23) intended to remain in contact with the walls of the tank (VI), for example at the exposed surface (Rl).
- Said covering element (2) is preferably made of heat-insulating material in whole or in part.
- Said floating structure (3) comprises for example one or more floating bodies (31, 32, 33) constrained to the covering element (2).
- Said floating structure (3) comprises for example a central main floating body (31), constrained to said covering element (2) at the higher central part (21).
- Said at least one support frame (4) for said heating (5, 6) and mixing (7) means is preferably constrained to said main central floating body (31), and is therefore in a substantially central position with regard to the volume of material (R), thereby ensuring maximum heat exchange efficiency.
- Said floating bodies preferably also comprise one or more perimeter floating bodies (33), mounted near or at the perimeter portion (23) of the covering element (2), and/or one or more intermediate floating bodies (32), mounted in a generally intermediate position (22) with respect to said covering element (2).
- Said floating bodies (31, 32, 33) are sized and structured so as to ensure the proper flotation and positioning of said covering element (2) on said exposed surface (Rl) of the material (R), so that said covering element (2) varies its height as a function of the level of the material contained in the tank (V).
- Said new cover (1) may also comprise one or more means to collect the biogas produced inside the tank (V) and to transport the biogas in a circuit for use or accumulation, such as to the boiler for the heating circuit of said heating means (5) itself or another plant to generate electric power.
