  • Closed coat abrasive material is understood generally and within the context of the present invention to relate to an adhesive layer, or a backing material covered in adhesive, where substantially 100% of the adhesive layer is covered in an abrasive composition such as abrasive grain.
  • Semi-open coat abrasive materials is understood generally and within the context of the present invention to have up to a 30% reduction in abrasive composition coverage on the adhesive layer compared to closed coat materials; i.e. there are gaps between abrasive grain particles or the like which form the abrasive composition.
  • Open coat abrasive materials is understood generally and within the context of the present invention to have up to a 50% reduction in abrasive composition coverage on the adhesive layer compared to closed coat materials.
  • the abrasive material of the present invention is provided with between a 1 0% - 70% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material. More preferably the abrasive material of the present invention is provided with between a 20% - 60% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material. Even more preferably the abrasive material of the present invention is provided with between a 30% - 50% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material.
  • the abrasive material of the present invention is provided with a 50%+/- 5% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material.
  • the abrasive material of the present invention is provided with a substantially 50% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material.
  • the abrasive composition can be provided on any suitable adhesive layer configured to permanently, or substantially permanently, retain the abrasive composition thereon.
  • the abrasive material is provided directly on to a substrate on which it is required, for example as discussed later with reference to a roller head which may be made of a plastics material or a metal, the adhesive layer may be applied directly to the substrate and the abrasive composition then applied thereon.

  • the roller head preferably has no cushioning layer such that there is no dampening, in use, of the pressure of the abrasive material on the layer of skin to which it is applied.
  • the adhesive and abrasive composition could be pre-mixed and then applied directly to the substrate which may or may not also be provided with a layer of adhesive thereon.
  • the abrasive material may be provided with a backing material.
  • the backing material may then have an adhesive layer applied thereto to permit adhesion of the abrasive composition.
  • the adhesive and abrasive composition could be pre-mixed and then applied directly to the backing material which may or may not also be provided with a layer of adhesive thereon.
  • the backing material may then be attached to a substrate, such as roller head, subsequently by any suitable means, such as adhesion or welding or the like.
  • the backing material may be selected from the group consisting of cloth such as cotton, polyester or rayon, PET film, fibre or rubber, and combinations thereof.
  • the adhesive layer is waterproof and, if present, it is preferred for the backing material to be formed from a waterproof material.
  • the abrasive composition is provided in the form of abrasive grains.
  • the abrasive composition is selected from the group comprising aluminum oxide, emery, garnet, silicon carbide and ceramic, and combinations thereof.
  • the abrasive composition is selected to be an aluminium oxide.
  • the abrasive composition comprises or consists of natural abrasive sea minerals, including but not limited to sand (S1O2) and crustacean shell, such as oyster shell (>95wt% CaCCb).
  • the grit size of the abrasive composition may be provided with particles having an average diameter of between 50 ⁇ - 425 ⁇ , and preferably an average diameter of between 125 ⁇ - 200 ⁇ .
  • the skin dermabrasion material of the present invention is for wet skin.
  • a skin dermabrasion device comprising a skin dermabrasion material in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention wherein the skin dermabrasion material comprises an abrasive material of at least an adhesive layer covered with an abrasive composition wherein the abrasive material is a non- closed coat abrasive material having less than 90% of the adhesive layer being covered with the abrasive composition.
  • the skin dermabrasion device of the present invention is for wet skin.
  • the abrasive material is provided on a substrate in the form of a roller head, wherein the roller head is preferably made of a plastics material or a metal or a metal alloy, but particularly preferably is made of a rigid or substantially rigid plastics material, and most preferably is made from an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene co-polymer.
  • the roller head is made from a rigid plastics material that is not porous.
  • the roller head preferably has no cushioning layer such that there is no dampening, in use, of the pressure of the abrasive material on the layer of skin to which it is applied.
  • the roller head may be in the form of a cylinder or drum.
  • the cylinder or drum can be shaped such that the abrasive surface is in the form of a convex curve such that the diameter of the cylinder or drum is greater in the middle than at either end.
  • the surface of the cylinder or drum may be in the form of a parabolic arc.
  • the length of the cylinder or drum is between 2 and 4 times greater than the diameter of the cylinder or drum. More preferably the length of the cylinder or drum is between 2 and 3 times greater than the diameter of the cylinder or drum. Most preferably, the length of the drum is 2.5 times greater than the diameter of the cylinder or drum at its widest.
  • the drum may be in the shape of a barrel and preferably has the shape of an elongated barrel.
  • the diameter at the centre of the cylinder or drum is between 1 0% and 30% larger than the diameter at the ends of the cylinder or drum. More preferably, the diameter at the centre of the cylinder or drum is between 15% and 25% larger than the diameter at the ends of the cylinder or drum. More preferably, the diameter at the centre of the cylinder or drum is between 20% and 22% larger than the diameter at the ends of the cylinder or drum.
  • the length of the cylinder or drum can be 45 - 55mm and most preferably is substantially 50mm.
  • the diameter of the cylinder or drum at its narrowest can be from 15 - 18 mm.
  • the diameter of the cylinder or drum is at its narrowest is 1 6.5mm.
  • the diameter of the cylinder or drum at its broadest can be from 18.5mm to 22mm. Most preferably the diameter of the cylinder or drum at its broadest is 20.5mm.
  • the cylinder or drum is 50mm in length, 1 6.5mm in diameter at either end and 20.5mm in diameter in the centre.
  • a skin dermabrasion apparatus comprising a handle portion, a head portion having two arms arranged to receive and hold a skin dermabrasion device as described in the second aspect of the present invention.
  • the dermabrasion apparatus is provided with control means which enable rotation of the dermabrasion device at more than one speed.
  • the apparatus is provided with means to rotate the device at two different speeds, a slower non-load speed of 1600rpm and a quicker non-load speed of 2000rpm.
  • a skin dermabrasion apparatus wherein the skin dermabrasion apparatus comprised a handle portion, a head portion having two arms arranged to receive and hold a skin dermabrasion device as described in the second aspect of the present invention, and wherein the method comprises the steps of: activating the apparatus;

  • the roller head is made of a rigid and non-porous plastics material such that no cushioning layer is present to prevent dampening, in use, of the pressure of the abrasive material 3 on a layer of skin to which it is applied.
  • the drum 2 is shaped such that the abrasive surface of the drum is in the form of a convex curve such that the diameter of the drum 2 is greater in the middle than at either end.
  • the abrasive material 3 comprises an adhesive layer covered with an abrasive composition wherein the abrasive material 3 is a non-closed coat abrasive material having less than 90% of the adhesive layer being covered with the abrasive composition, as depicted the adhesive layer is provided with a 50%+/-5% reduction in abrasive composition on the adhesive layer compared to a closed coat material.
  • the abrasive composition is provided by abrasive grains, shown here in the form of naturally derived abrasive sea minerals in the form of a combination of sand (S1O2) and crustacean shell (>95wt% CaCCb) having a grain size with an average diameter of between 125 ⁇ - 200 ⁇ .
  • the abrasive material 3 may cover up to approximately 90% of the surface of the drum 2.
  • the ends of the drum 2 are each provided with a shaft 4 which enables the drum 2 to be held in the hand held device 6 shown in Figure 2.
  • the apparatus 5 comprises the skin dermabrasion device 1 and a hand held device 6.
  • the hand held device 6 is provided with a housing in the form of a handle 7 and two arms 8 & 9.
  • the hand held device 6 housing surrounds an electrically-powered motor which is connected by gearing which extends into one or both arms 8 & 9 to permit, in use, rotation of the skin dermabrasion device 1 .
  • the skin dermabrasion device 1 is held between the two arms 8 & 9.
  • the two arms 8 & 9 are provided with grooves (not shown) which guide the ends of the device 1 into its position of use.
  • buttons 10 to permit activation and deactivation of the electrically-powered motor, and control means in the form of button 1 1 for altering the speed at which the electrically-powered motor rotates the gearing and, thus, the speed with which the dermabrasion device 1 rotates.
  • the two speed rotation of the dermabrasion device 1 may be advantageous in enabling the apparatus 5 to be used on both wet and dry skin; the device must rotate at a higher speed when used on wet skin.
  • the electrically-powered motor is preferably electrically connected to a re-chargeable battery which housed within the hand held device 6.
  • a re-chargeable battery is preferred as it will permit the apparatus 5 to be sealed to waterproof standards thus improving the utility of the apparatus 5 on wet skin as it could be used in wet conditions such as whilst the user showers.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un dispositif de dermabrasion de la peau et un appareil de dermabrasion de la peau, à la fois le dispositif et l'appareil comprenant un matériau de dermabrasion de la peau comprenant un matériau abrasif constitué d'au moins une couche adhésive recouverte d'une composition abrasive, le matériau abrasif étant un matériau abrasif de revêtement non-fermé où moins de 90 % de la couche adhésive sont recouverts avec la composition abrasive. L'invention concerne également un procédé d'utilisation correspondant.
