Abstract

Description
실시예는 프론트 라이트 유닛 및 영상 표시 장치에 관한 것이다.
액정(LC: Liquid Crystal) 디스플레이 장치나 유기 EL(Electro Luminescence) 디스플레이 장치 등의 디스플레이 장치로부터 생성되어 공급된 화상을 허상 광학계에 의해 변환하여 관찰자에게 전달하는 영상 표시 장치가 일반적으로 알려져 있다.
이러한 영상 표시 장치는, 최근 보급되고 있는 웨어러블(Wearable) 표시 장치인 헤드 마운트 디스플레이(Head Mounted Display: HMD) 또는 스마트 안경 등에 이용되고 있다.
또한, 영상 표시 장치는 조정사나 운전자의 주시선 위치에 주행에 필요한 다양한 정보를 외부 시야와 함께 중첩시켜 허상으로서 표시하는 전방 시현 장치인 헤드 업 디스플레이(Head-up Display) 장치에도 이용되고 있다.
종래의 영상 표시 장치는 광원에서 방출된 빛을 디스플레이소자로 전달하기 위하여 편광 빔 스플리터(Polarization Beam Splitter)를 사용하고 있다.
이러한 편광 빔 스플리터는 일반적으로 입사된 광을 편광 성분으로 분리하여 P파는 편광 빔 스플리터를 통과하고, S파 성분만 반사되어 디스플레이 소자에 전달되도록 한다. 이때, 편광 빔 스플리터에서 공급되는 편광된 빛을 이용하여 디스플레이 소자는 영상 광을 생성하게 된다.
하지만, 편광 빔 스플리터의 경우 고가의 광학 부품이고, 또한 편광 빔 스플리터가 차지하는 공간으로 인하여 영상 표시 장치의 크기를 소형화하는데 문제가 되고 있다.
실시예는 편광 빔 스플리터를 대체하여 디스플레이부에 광을 공급하기 위하여 홀로그램 광학 소자부를 갖는 프론트 라이트 유닛과 영상을 사용자의 눈 방향으로 효율적으로 가이드할 수 있는 영상 표시 장치를 구현하고자 한다.
실시예는 광원부; 상기 광원부로부터 입사된 광을 가이드하며, 상기 가이드 된 광을 디스플레이부로 출사하는 도광부; 및 상기 디스플레이부와 마주보고, 상기 도광부 상에 배치된 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 포함하는 프론트 라이트 유닛을 제공한다.
상기 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부는 베이스 기판과 상기 베이스 기판 상에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴을 포함할 수 있다.
상기 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 굴절률은 상기 도광부의 굴절률보다 클 수 있다.

실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛은 홀로그램 광학 소자부를 이용하여 디스플레이부에 전달되는 광의 방향을 조절함으로써 광 손실을 최소화하여 광 효율을 개선하고 라이트 유닛 및 이를 포함한 표시 장치의 크기를 소형화할 수 있다. 그리고, 펜타 프리즘을 사용함으로써 대화면 영상을 제공할 수 있다.

본 발명에 따른 실시예의 설명에 있어서, 각 element의 “상(위) 또는 하(아래)(on or under)”에 형성되는 것으로 기재되는 경우에 있어, 상(위) 또는 하(아래)(on or under)는 두 개의 element가 서로 직접(directly) 접촉되거나 하나 이상의 다른 element가 상기 두 element 사이에 배치되어(indirectly) 형성되는 것을 모두 포함한다. 또한 “상(위) 또는 하(아래)(on or under)”로 표현되는 경우 하나의 element를 기준으로 위쪽 방향뿐만 아니라 아래쪽 방향의 의미도 포함할 수 있다.
또한, 이하에서 이용되는 “제1” 및 “제2”, “상/상부/위” 및 “하/하부/아래” 등과 같은 관계적 용어들은 그런 실체 또는 요소들 간의 어떠한 물리적 또는 논리적 관계 또는 순서를 반드시 요구하거나 내포하지는 않으면서, 어느 한 실체 또는 요소를 다른 실체 또는 요소와 구별하기 위해서만 이용될 수도 있다.
도 1은 일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛을 나타낸 도면이다.
일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)은 광원부(105)와 광원부(105)로부터 입사된 광을 가이드하는 도광부(101) 및 도광부 상에 배치되는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 포함할 수 있다.
프론트 라이트 유닛(100)은 디스플레이부(200)와 마주보고 배치될 수 있다.
프론트 라이트 유닛(100)에서 광원부(105)는 도광부(101)의 적어도 하나의 측면에 배치될 수 있다.
도 1을 참조하면, 광원부(105)가 도광부(101)의 일측면에 배치된 것을 도시하고 있으나, 실시예는 이에 한정하지 않으며 광원부(105)는 도광부(101)의 다른 측면에 더 배치될 수도 있다.
광원부(105)는 복수의 광원을 포함할 수 있다.
복수의 광원은 기판 상에 배치될 수 있다. 기판에는 광원과의 전기적 연결을 위한 전극 패턴이 형성될 수 있으며, 폴리에틸렌테레프탈레이트(PET), 유리, 폴리카보네이트(PC), 실리콘(Si)으로부터 선택된 어느 하나의 물질로 이루어진 PCB(Printed Circuit Board) 기판일 수 있다.
또한, 기판은 단층 PCB, 다층 PCB, 세라믹 기판, 메탈 코아 PCB 등을 선택적으로 사용할 수 있다.
복수의 광원은 예를 들어, 발광 다이오드(LED:Light Emitting Device) 또는 레이저(Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)일 수 있으나, 실시예는 광원의 종류에 국한되지 않는다.
복수의 광원은 측면 발광형(side view type) 발광 소자 또는 상면 발광형(top view type) 발광 소자일 수 있다.
또한, 광원부(105)에 포함된 복수의 광원은 발광 소자(Light Emitting Diode, LED) 칩, 발광 소자(LED)를 몸체에 고정한 발광 소자 패키지 또는 발광 소자 패키지에 광학 부재를 더 포함하는 발광 모듈 형태일 수 있다.
한편, 광원부(105)에 포함된 복수의 광원은 서로 다른 파장을 갖는 광을 방출할 수도 있고 서로 동일한 파장 대역을 갖는 광을 방출할 수도 있다.
이때, 복수의 광원의 발광이 제어되도록 하는 제어부가 광원부에 더 포함될 수 있으며, 제어부는 복수의 광원이 배치된 기판을 통해 복수의 광원 중 적어도 하나의 광원의 동작을 제어하여 발광 여부를 제어할 수 있으며, 복수의 광원이 교대로 작동하도록 제어할 수도 있다.
광원부(105)는 백색광을 방출할 수 있다. 이때, 복수의 광원 각각이 백색광을 방출할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 복수의 광원이 청색 파장 영역의 광을 방출하는 청색 발광 소자인 경우, 각 발광 소자 상에 옐로우 형광체(Yellow phosphor)를 결합하거나, 레드 형광체(Red phosphor)와 그린 형광체(Green phosphor)를 동시에 사용하여 구현할 수 있고, 또는 청색 발광 소자 상에 옐로우 형광체(Yellow phosphor), 레드 형광체(Red phosphor) 및 그린 형광체(Green phosphor)를 동시에 사용하여 백색광을 구현할 수도 있다.
한편, 복수의 광원은 서로 다른 파장 영역의 광을 방출하는 발광 소자일 수 있다. 예를 들어, 복수의 광원은 각각 청색(Blue), 녹색(Green) 및 적색(Red) 파장 영역의 광을 발광 하는 것일 수 있으며, 이러한 세 종류의 발광 소자가 정렬되어 배치될 수 있다.
광원부(105)는 도광부(101)에 광을 공급하는 것일 수 있으며, 예를 들어, 광원부(105)에 포함되는 복수의 발광 소자에서 방출되는 광은 점광원으로 도광부(101)에 전달될 수 있다.
도 1을 참조하면, 일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)에서 도광부(101)는 광원부(105)로부터 입사된 광을 가이드하여 디스플레이부(200)로 전달할 수 있다. 이때, 도광부(101)로부터 공급되는 광은 면광원일 수 있다.
도광부(101)는 투명한 고분자 수지로 형성될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 도광부(101)는 PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate) 또는 PC(Polycarbonate)와 같은 물질을 포함하여 제조될 수 있다.
또한, 도광부(101)는 굴절률이 1 이상인 물질로 형성될 수 있다.
한편, 도면에 도시되지는 않았으나 도광부(101)의 제1 면(101a)에는 편향 패턴을 포함할 수 있다. 이러한 편향 패턴은 광원부(105)에서 도광부(101)로 공급되는 광이 도광부(101)의 제2 면(101b)으로 향하도록 하는 것일 수 있다.
이때, 제1 면(101a)과 제2 면(101b)은 서로 대향하여 마주보는 면일 수 있으며, 또한, 제2 면(101b)은 디스플레이부(200)와 마주보는 면일 수 있다.
제2 면(101b)은 도광부(101)의 광출사면일 수 있다. 또한, 제2 면(101b)은 디스플레이부(200)에서 도광부(101)로 다시 입사되는 영상 광에 대한 입사면이 될 수 있다.
홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)는 도광부(101) 상에 배치될 수 있다.
예를 들어, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)는 도광부(101)의 광출사면인 제2 면(101b) 상에 배치될 수 있다.
도 1을 참조하면, 광원부(105)에서 방출되어 도광부(101)에 공급된 복수의 광원에서 방출된 빛(R1)은 도광부(101) 상의 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 거쳐서 디스플레이부(200)로 입사되고, 디스플레이부(200)에서 출사되는 영상 광(R2)은 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)와 도광부(101)를 투과하여 후술하는 허상 광학부로 전달될 수 있다.
도 2a 내지 도 2b는 도광부(101)에서 빛이 출사되는 예시를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 2a는 도광부(101) 상에 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 포함하지 않는 경우이고, 도 2b는 도광부(101) 상에 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 포함하는 실시예의 경우에서의 빛이 출사되는 예시를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 2a를 참조하면, 도광부(101) 내부에 입사된 빛 중 일부만이 출사면(101b)을 통하여 외부로 진행될 수 있다.
즉, 도광부(101) 내부에서 진행되는 빛이 외부로 출사되도록 하기 위해서는 빛은 임계각(θc) 보다 작은 각도로 도광부의 출사면(101b)에 입사되어야 한다.
예를 들어, 도 2a에서 도광부의 출사면(101b)과 이루는 광의 입사각이 θ1인 경우 도광부(101)에서 외부로 광이 출사될 수 있다. 이때, 입사각 θ1은 θc보다 작은 것일 수 있다.
한편, 임계각과 입사각이 동일한 경우(θ2=θc)와, 임계각보다 큰 입사각을 갖는 경우(θ3>θc)에서는 도광부(101)에서 전달되는 광이 외부로 출사되지 못하게 되어 광 효율이 감소할 수 있다.
이와 달리, 도 2b의 실시예에서는 도광부(101) 상에 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 포함함으로써 임계각 이상(θ2 또는 θ3의 경우)으로 도광부의 광출사면(101b)에 입사된 광에 대해서도 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 통과하여 외부로 출사되도록 할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 도 2b의 실시예에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 굴절률은 도광부(101)의 굴절률보다 큰 것일 수 있다.
구체적으로, 도광부의 굴절률이 n1이고, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 굴절률이 n2 일 때, 1<n1<n2 일 수 있다.
따라서, 도광부(103)에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)로 진행하는 빛은 도광부의 광출사면으로 입사될 때의 광의 입사각보다 도광부와 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 경계면에서 굴절되는 굴절각이 더 작아지도록 변환되어 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 통과하여 출사될 수 있다.
즉, 실시예에서 도광부(101) 상에 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 포함함으로써, 도광부(101)의 광 출사면(101b)에서의 광 출사각을 변환할 수 있고, 또한 도광부로부터 공급되는 광을 디스플레이부로 콜리메이팅하는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
즉, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)는 도광부의 출사면(101b)으로 입사되는 광의 전반사 조건을 변화시켜 도광부로부터 외부로 출사되는 광량을 증가시킬 수 있다.
도 3a 내지 도 3b는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 일 실시예에 대한 도면이다.
도 3a는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 단면도이고, 도 3b는 도 3a에 도시된 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 평면도에 해당한다.
도 3a를 참조하면, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)는 베이스 기판(103-1)과 베이스 기판 상에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)을 포함할 수 있다.
베이스 기판(103-1)은 고분자 수지 재료로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 베이스 기판은 PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate) 또는 PC(Polycarbonate)로 형성될 수 있다.
홀로그램 패턴(103-2)은 베이스 기판(103-1)과 동일한 물질로 형성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 베이스 기판과 홀로그램 패턴은 일체(一體)로 형성될 수 있다.
또한, 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)은 금속선으로 형성될 수 있다.
이때, 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)은 금속선이 일정한 간격으로 배열되어 형성된 스트라이프 패턴 또는 금속선이 서로 교차되어 형성된 격자(wire-grid) 패턴을 형성할 수 있다.
금속선으로 형성된 홀로그램 패턴은 도광부(101)로부터 공급받은 광을 한 방향으로 집중시키거나 또는 일 방향의 편광만 투과하는 편광판(Polarizer)의 기능을 할 수 있으며, 금속선의 패턴은 증착 공정에 의하여 베이스 기판(103-1) 상에 형성될 수 있다.
패턴을 형성하는 금속선은 알루미늄(Al), 금(Au), 은(Ag), 백금(Pt), 구리(Cu), 니켈(Ni), 팔라듐(Pd), 아연(Zn), 철(Fe), 크롬(Cr), 몰리브덴(Mo) 등의 금속 중 적어도 하나를 포함할 수 있으나, 이에 한정하지 않는다.
홀로그래픽 광학 소자부 상에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)은 도광부(101)에서 디스플레이부(200)로 콜리메이팅된 광이 전달될 수 있도록 하는 것일 수 있다.
즉, 홀로그램 패턴은 도광부에서 출사되는 광이 디스플레이부로 수직으로 입사되도록 하는 회절 패턴일 수 있다.
예를 들어, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부는 도광부의 내부에서 진행되는 빛을 디스플레이부 방향으로 출사시키기 위하여 도광부의 출사면 상에 배치되며, 출사면에서 전반사되어 다시 도광부 내로 전달되는 빛에 대하여 전반사 조건을 변경할 수 있다.
또한, 도광부에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부로 출사된 광에 대해서는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에 형성된 회절 패턴을 통하여 디스플레이부로 출사된 광이 전달되도록 할 수 있다.
또한, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부 상에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴은 일 방향으로 편광된 빛만을 투과하도록 일정한 간격으로 형성된 스트라이프 패턴일 수 있다. 즉, 스트라이프 패턴으로 형성된 홀로그램 패턴을 포함하는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 경우 도광부에서 입사된 광 중 P파 또는 S파 등의 일 방향으로 편광된 빛만 투과할 수 있다.
도 3b는 도 3a의 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부 실시예에 대한 평면도일 수 있으며, 예를 들어 주기적으로 반복된 스트라이프 패턴을 포함한 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 평면도일 수 있다.
상술한 바와 같이, 스트라이프 패턴을 갖는 일 실시예의 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 경우 도광부(101)에서 전달되는 빛을 디스플레이부로 전달되도록 모아줄 뿐 아니라, 일 방향의 편광된 빛만을 투과하는 편광판(Polarizer)의 효과를 가질 수도 있다.
또한, 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)을 갖는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)는 도광부(101)에서 전달되는 빛을 필터링 함으로써, 디스플레이부로 공급되는 광에서 노이즈를 제거할 수 있다.
도 4는 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 다른 실시예를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 4의 단면도를 참조하면, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에서 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)의 절단면은 삼각형 형상일 수 있다.
또한, 도 4의 실시예에서, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 중심 영역(Z3)과 가장자리 영역(Z1, Z2)에서 홀로그램 패턴은 서로 상이한 형상의 패턴을 가질 수 있다.
예를 들어, 도 4에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)의 중심 영역인 Z3 영역에서의 패턴(103-2) 형상은 도광부에서 디스플레이부로 광을 전달하기 위하여 중심으로 광이 집중되도록 하는 이등변 삼각형의 형상일 수 있다.
또한, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 가장자리 영역(Z1, Z2)에서는 디스플레이부로 광을 전달하기 위하여 삼각형의 빗변 또는 삼각형의 세 개의 변 중 가장 길이가 긴 변이 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 중앙 영역으로 향하도록 형성된 삼각형 패턴을 포함하도록 형성될 수 있다.
이때, 양측 가장 자리의 패턴 형상은 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 중심을 기준으로 서로 대칭될 수 있으며, 디스플레이부에 수직방향으로 광이 집중되어 공급되도록 하기 위하여 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 중앙에서 가장자리 영역으로 갈수록 패턴 단면에서 삼각형의 가장 긴 변이 밑변과 이루는 경사각이 커지도록 형성될 수 있다.
도 3a 내지 도 3b 및 도 4에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)에서의 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)의 일 실시예를 나타내었으나, 패턴 형상은 도면에 도시된 실시예에 한정하지 않으며, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부는 다양한 형상의 홀로그램 패턴을 포함할 수 있다. 예를 들어, 홀로그램 패턴은 곡면으로 형성될 수 있으며 또는 다각형 형상의 단면을 이룰 수도 있다.
도 3a 내지 도 4에 도시된 실시예에서, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴(103-2)은 도광부와 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 경계면에서 진행되는 빛을 회절 시켜서 도광부 내부에서 전반사되어 출사되지 못하는 광을 최소화시키고 디스플레이부로 공급되는 광량을 증가시킴으로써 광원부의 효율을 개선할 수 있다.
도 5는 일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛의 단면도를 나타낸 것이다.
도 5를 참조할 때, 도광부(101)의 측면에 광원부(105)가 배치될 수 있으며, 측면으로부터 도광부(101) 내에 전달된 빛은 도광부(101) 상에 배치된 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부(103)를 투과하여 외부로 출사될 수 있다.
일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛에서 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴은 광원부에서 방출된 광을 디스플레이부로 공급되도록 하고 동시에 디스플레이부에서 생성된 영상 광은 홀로그램 패턴에서 차단되지 않고 다시 도광부를 투과하여 허상 광학부로 전달될 수 있도록 하기 위하여 패턴의 간격이 조정되어 형성될 수 있다.
이때, 광원부에서 공급되는 광은 점광원이고, 도광부는 광원부에서 점광원으로 공급된 광을 면광원으로 변환할 수 있다.
도광부(101)를 통과한 빛은 면광원으로 디스플레이부에 공급될 수 있다.
상술한 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛은 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 도광부 상에 배치함으로써 도광부의 출사면에서 전반사되어 출사되지 못한 광의 진행 방향을 변환하여 도광부의 출사면에서 외부로 출사되는 광량을 증가시킬 수 있다.
또한, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴에 의하여 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에서 출사되는 광을 디스플레이부 방향으로 집중시킬 수 있어 광원부의 광 효율을 증가시키는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
한편, 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부에 스트라이프 패턴을 포함하는 실시예의 경우 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부는 편광판 기능을 할 수 있어, 편광 빔 스플리터 또는 별도의 편광판을 사용하지 않고 일 방향의 편광을 디스플레이부로 전달할 수 있으며, 또한 프론트 라이트 유닛의 크기를 소형화하는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
도 6은 상술한 프론트 라이트 유닛을 포함하는 영상 표시 장치의 일 실시예에 대한 도면이다.
도 6을 참조하면, 일 실시예의 영상 표시 장치는 상술한 일 실시예의 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)과 반사형 디스플레이부(200) 및 반사형 디스플레이부에서 생성된 영상 광을 허상 영상으로 변환하는 허상 광학부(300)를 포함할 수 있다.
허상 광학부(300)는 반사형 디스플레이부(200)에서 출력되는 영상 정보를 수신하여 허상으로 변환된 영상을 생성할 수 있다.
즉, 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)에서 방출된 광을 공급받아 반사형 디스플레이부(200)에서 생성한 영상 광이 허상 광학부(300)로 투사되고, 투사된 영상은 허상 광학부(300)를 거치면서 허상으로 변환되어 가상 이미지로 출력되어 사용자(50)에게 전달될 수 있다.
반사형 디스플레이부(200)는 디스플레이부의 정면에서 도입된 빛을 광원으로 하여 영상 광을 생성하는 디스플레이 장치일 수 있다.
예를 들어 반사형 디스플레이부(200)는 반사형 액정 디스플레이 장치일 수 있다.
또한, 반사형 디스플레이부(200)는 LCoS(Liquid Crystal on Silicone) 디스플레이일 수 있다.
반사형 액정 디스플레이 장치의 일 실시예인 LCoS는 투명 전극이 형성된 유리 기판과 이러한 투명 유리 기판과 대향하여 배치되고 구동 회로를 포함한 Si 반도체 기판 및 두 기판 사이에 주입된 액정을 포함하여 구성될 수 있다. 이때, 반도체 기판 상에는 반사 전극이 형성될 수 있다.
도 6을 참조하면, 허상 광학부(300)는 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)을 기준으로 반사형 디스플레이부(200)와 대향하여 배치될 수 있다.
허상 광학부(300)는 영상 광을 투과하는 렌즈부(310), 렌즈부에서 공급된 영상 광을 허상으로 변환하는 적어도 하나의 허상 변환미러(350) 및 렌즈부(310)와 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러(350) 사이에 배치되는 빔 스플리터(330)를 포함할 수 있다.
렌즈부(310)는 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)을 투과한 영상 광을 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러(350)로 전달하는 것일 수 있다.
예를 들어, 렌즈부(310)는 프론트 라이트 유닛(100)에서 공급되는 영상 광을 평행광으로 변환하는 콜리메이팅 렌즈일 수 있다.
렌즈부(310)는 허상 변환 미러(350)로 영상 광을 유도하기 위하여 광을 집중시키거나 또는 확산하는 역할을 할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 렌즈부(310)는 PMMA(Polymethylmethacrylate)와 같은 아크릴 수지 계열, PET(polyethylene terephthlate), COC(Cyclic Olefin Copolymers), PEN(polyethylene naphthalate), PC(Polycarbonate), PS(Polystyrene), 또는 MS(Methacylate styrene) 수지 중 어느 하나를 포함하여 투명하게 형성될 수 있으나, 렌즈부(310)를 구성하는 물질은 예시된 물질에 국한되지 않는다.
렌즈부(310)를 투과한 영상 광은 빔 스플리터(330)로 전달될 수 있다.
빔 스플리터(330)는 공급되는 영상 광을 투과하거나 또는 반사할 수 있다.
빔 스플리터(330)는 반투과형 미러일 수 있다.
예를 들어, 반사형 디스플레이부(200)에서 생성되어 공급된 영상 광은 렌즈부(310)를 투과하여 빔 스플리터(330)에 전달되며, 빔 스플리터(330)는 공급된 영상 광을 투과하여 허상 변환 미러(350)로 전달할 수 있다.
또한, 허상 변환 미러(350)에서 전환되어 공급된 허상 영상 광은 빔 스플리터(330)에서 반사되어 사용자(50)에게 전달되도록 할 수 있다.
허상 광학부(300)는 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러(350)를 포함할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러(350)는 평탄형, 오목형, 볼록형 또는 맞춤형 프리 폼 형태의 미러 중 어느 하나를 포함하는 것일 수 있다.
또한, 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러는 Al(Aluminum), Ag(Silver), Au(Gold) 중 적어도 어느 하나로 이루어지는 반사층을 표면에 포함하여 형성될 수 있다.
적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러는 실상 영상을 허상으로 변환하여 사용자에게 공급할 수 있으며, 또한 실상 영상 또는 변환된 허상 영상의 진행 방향을 변환하는 방향 전환 기능을 할 수 있다.
적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러는 복수의 미러가 다양한 형태로 배치된 구조를 가질 수 있다.
허상 변환 미러는 곡률을 갖는 것일 수 있다.
허상 변환 미러는 반사형 디스플레이부에서 생성되어 프론트 라이트 유닛을 통과하여 투사된 영상 정보를 반사시키거나 또는 회절 시켜 허상을 생성할 수 있다.
예를 들어, 허상 변환 미러는 오목 미러일 수 있다.
또한, 적어도 하나의 허상 변환 미러는 방향 전환 미러를 포함할 수 있다. 방향 전환 미러는 반사형 디스플레이부에서 출력되어 공급되는 영상 정보의 투사 방향을 전환하는 역할을 할 수 있다.
방향 전환 미러는 투사된 영상의 방향을 전환하여 반사시키는 것으로 전반사 미러일 수 있다.
일 실시예의 영상 표시 장치의 경우 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 갖는 프론트 라이트 유닛을 포함함으로써 영상 표시 장치에서 실상 영상을 생성하는 조명계에 해당하는 부분의 부피를 최소화할 수 있다.
또한, 홀로그램 패턴에 의하여 반사형 디스플레이부로 공급되는 광량을 증가시켜 디스플레이부에서 생성되는 영상의 휘도를 증가시킬 수 있어 최종적으로 사용자에게 전달되는 허상의 휘도를 개선하는 효과를 가질 수 있다.
한편, 일 실시예의 영상 표시 장치는 소형화된 크기로 인하여 웨어러블 디스플레이인 스마트 글래스(Smart glass) 등에 용이하게 사용될 수 있으며, 자동차의 헤드 업 디스플레이 장치에 적용됨에 있어서도 소형화된 크기로 인하여 디자인의 다양성을 증가시킬 수 있다.
도 7은 다른 실시예의 영상 표시 장치의 구성을 도시한 것이고, 도 8은 도 7에 사용된 펜타 프리즘(420)의 사시도를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 7을 참조하면, 영상 표시 장치(400)는 디스플레이부(410), 펜타 프리즘(420), 및 허상 광학부(430)를 포함하여 구성된다.
디스플레이부(410)는 영상(Image)을 표시하는 소자로 LCD 패널이나 다른 다양한 디스플레이 기기가 사용될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 디스플레이부(410)는 반사형인 실리콘 액정 표시소자(Liquid Crystal on Silicon : LCoS), 디지털 광원 표시소자(Digital Light Processing :DLP), 광원이 결합된 마이크로 LCD 소자 또는 자체발광하는 마이크로 OLED 소자 등이 사용될 수 있고 크기는 1인치 이하일 수 있다. 한편, 마이크로 반사형인 실리콘 액정 표시소자, 디지털 광원 표시소자, 마이크로 LCD 소자는 자체 발광이 아니므로 외부에서 광원이 결합되어야 한다. 즉, 백라이트를 사용한 투과형 마이크로 LCD 패널 또는 프론트 라이트(Front light)를 사용한 반사형 마이크로 LCD 패널이 가능하다. 마이크로 OLED 패널은 자체 발광이 가능하기 때문에 별도의 광원이 필요 없으므로 헤드 마운트 디스플레이 장치를 보다 소형으로 구성할 수 있다. 이때 광원에서 출사되는 빛을 디스플레이부(410)로 입사되도록 광경로를 조절하는 광학계가 사용될 수 있다.
펜타 프리즘(420)은 도 8에 도시된 바와 같이 다섯 면을 갖는 반사 프리즘이며, 입사된 빛을 90°로 굴절시켜 출사시킬 수 있다.
펜타 프리즘(420)의 입사면과 출사면에는 각각 렌즈(426, 428)가 형성될 수 있다. 렌즈(426, 428)가 없어도 본 실시예의 목적을 달성하는데는 지장이 없으나 렌즈(426, 428)을 부착함으로서 해상력을 향상시킬 수 있다.
펜타 프리즘(420)은 다섯 면을 가진 펜타 프리즘으로서, "제1면"(421)은 펜타 프리즘(420)에서 90°로 굴절시켜 출사하기 위해 입사되는 빛의 투과면을 말하고, "제2면"(422)은 제1면(421)에서 입사된 빛이 반사되는 첫 번째 면을 말하며, "제3면"(423)은 제2면(422)에서 반사된 빛을 다시 반사하는 두 번째 면을 말하며, "제4면"(424)은 제3면(423)에서 반사된 빛이 펜타 프리즘(420) 밖으로 출사하기 위해 투과하는 면을 말하며, "제5면"(425)은 펜타 프리즘(420)에 입하되는 빛을 90°로 굴절시키기 위해 광학적으로 사용되지 않는 면으로서, 제2면(422)과 제3면(423) 사이에 구비된 면을 말한다.
제1면(421)부터 제5면(425)까지 구비된 펜타 프리즘(420)은 피사체로부터 출사된 빛이 제1면(421)을 투과하고, 제2면(422) 및 제3면(423)에 순차적으로 반사되며, 마지막으로 제4면(424)을 투과함으로써, 90°로 굴절된 상을 맺히게 해 줄 수 있다.
도 8에서 살펴본 펜타 프리즘의 구성은 도 7의 실시예로 설명하였지만 도 9 및 도 10의 실시예에도 동일하게 적용가능하다.
허상 광학부(430)는 펜타 프리즘(420)에서 출사되는 빛을 관찰자의 눈으로 반사시켜 관찰자가 허상을 볼 수 있도록 한다. 허상 광학부(430)는 집광 렌즈(432)와 반사 미러(434)를 포함할 수 있다. 집광 렌즈(432)는 펜타 프리즘(420)로부터 출사된 빛의 진행방향 전방에 위치하여 상기 출사된 빛을 모으는 역할을 한다. 집광 렌즈(432)란 광원으로부터 어떤 입체각 내에 발산하는 광선속(빛다발)을 이보다 작은 입체각 내에 모아서 높은 조도를 얻기 위한 렌즈로서 결상 렌즈만큼 정밀도를 요하지 않고 집광하는 입체각은 가급적 클 수 있다. 따라서 초점 거리에 비해서 구경이 크다. 집광 렌즈(432)는 적어도 하나의 구면렌즈 또는 적어도 하나의 비구면렌즈 중 선택된 렌즈의 조합으로 구성될 수 있다. 반사 미러(434)는 집광 렌즈(432)를 통과한 빛을 반사시켜 출사시키는 역할을 한다. 이때 반사 미러(434)는 도시된 바와 같이 입사된 빛이 관찰자의 눈으로 반사될 수 있도록 빛의 진행 방향에 대해 소정 각도(대략 45°)로 경사지게 형성될 수 있다..
상기와 같은 구성에 의해 디스플레이부(410)에서 출사된 빛은 펜타 프리즘(420)을 거쳐 90° 굴절되어 광학부로 입사된 후 반사 미러(434)에서 최종적으로 반사되어 출사된다. 이러한 광경로를 통해 관찰자는 디스플레이부에서 표시되는 영상의 확대 허상 영상을 관찰할 수 있다.
도 9는 또 다른 일실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치의 구성을 도시한 것이다.
본 실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치(500) 역시 디스플레이부(510), 펜타 프리즘(520), 반사미러(534) 및 허상 광학부(530)를 포함하고 있어 도 7에서 살펴본 영상 표시 장치(400)와 거의 유사한 구성을 하고 있다. 다만 본 실시예에서는 집광렌즈(532)가 허상 광학부(530)의 출사면에 형성되었다는 점만 상이하고 동일한 광경로를 형성하므로 자세한 설명은 생략하기로 한다.
도 10은 또 다른 일실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치의 구성을 도시한 것이다.
도 7 및 도 9의 실시예는 차단형(see-closed) 광학 장치의 예시를 도시한 것이고, 도 10은 투과형(see-through) 광학 장치의 예시를 나타낸 것이다.
본 실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치(600) 역시 앞서 살펴본 바와 같이 디스플레이부(610), 펜타 프리즘(620), 및 허상 광학부(630)를 포함한다.
다만 허상 광학부(630)는 편광 미러(632)와 반사 미러(634)를 포함하여 구성된다.
편광 미러(632)는 입사되는 빛을 선평광된 빛으로 선택적으로 투과시키고, 반사 미러(634)는 입사되는 빛을 모두 반사시킨다. 즉, 펜타 프리즘(620)에서 출사된 빛은 편광 미러(632)에서 일부는 반사되고 일부는 통과하게 되는데, 통과된 빛은 반사 미러(634)에서 다시 반사되어 관찰자 방향으로 출사된다.
이때 편광 미러는 빛의 진행 방향으로 소정 방향(대략 45°)으로 경사지게 설치된다. 편광 미러(632)는 빛을 편광 성분에 따라 분리하기 때문에 편광 빔 스플리터(Polarization Beam Splitter, PBS)로 불려지기도 한다.
본 실시예에서는 펜타 프리즘(620)의 입사면 및 출사면에 렌즈를 도시 하지 않았으나 필요에 따라 선택적으로 추가 설치하여 사용할 수 있다.
도 11은 다른 실시예의 영상 표시 장치를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 11을 참조하면, 본 실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치(730)는 디스플레이부(731), 렌즈(732), 및 도광부(733)를 포함하여 이루어진다.
디스플레이부(731)는 사용자에게 제공할 영상을 디스플레이하는 구성요소로서, 특히 백 라이트를 필요로 하지 않고 영상을 표시한다.
디스플레이부(731)의 구체적인 예로는 백 라이트가 필요없이 영상을 출력할 수 있는 투명 디스플레이 또는 유기 발광 다이오드(OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diodes)로 구성되는 디스플레이를 들 수 있다.
유기 발광 다이오드는 전압이 가해지면 스스로 빛을 발하는 유기발광재료를 이용하여 영상을 표시한다.
도 12a 내지 도13은 유기 발광 다이오드의 발광 구조를 도시한 것이다.
유기 발광 다이오드의 발광 구조를 살펴보자면, 도 12a에 도시된 예와 같이 유리기판(Glass)의 방향으로 빛을 방출하는 배면 발광(Bottom Emission)과, 도 12b에 도시된 예와 같이 유리기판(Glass)의 반대 방향으로 빛을 방출하는 전면 발광(Top Emission)으로 구분된다.
도 13을 참조하면, 유기 발광 다이오드는 기본적으로 유리나 플라스틱으로 구성된 투명한 기판 위에 두 개의 전극(ITO 전극, 금속전극)을 형성하고, 두 전극 사이에 정공주입층, 정공수송층, 발광층, 전자수송층, 전자주입층으로 이루어진 유기발광재료를 삽입한 형태로 이루어진다.
각 전극에 전압을 인가하면, 양극 쪽에서는 +전하를 가지고 있는 정공(Hole)이 발생되고, 음극 쪽에서는 -전하를 가지고 있는 전자(Electron)가 발생된다.
정공과 전자를 각각 정공주입층과 전자주입층을 통해 유기발광재료 내부로 주입시키면, 정공수송층과 전자수송층을 거쳐 발광층에서 결합하게 된다.
이때 전자가 가지고 있던 에너지가 방출되면서 유기발광재료를 자극함으로써 빛을 발생시키게 된다. 그리고, 발생된 에너지의 양과 발광층을 구성하고 있는 유기 물질의 종류에 따라 빛의 색상이 결정된다.
한편, 렌즈(732)는 디스플레이부(731)로부터 방출되어 입사된 빛을 모으는 역할을 수행한다.
이때 디스플레이부(731)와 렌즈(732)의 배치는 디스플레이부(731)로부터 방출된 빛이 바로 렌즈(732)를 향하도록 구성된다.
즉, 유기 발광 다이오드는 스스로 빛을 발생하므로, 백 라이트 유닛을 이용하여 빛을 제공할 필요가 없고, P파와 S파의 분리나 광 빔의 경로 변환 등을 위해 편광 빔 분리기를 사용하지 않아도 되므로, 디스플레이부(731)에서 방출된 빛이 직접 렌즈(732)로 입사되도록 구성된다.
그리고, 도광부(733)는 렌즈(732)를 통해 모인 빛을 사용자의 눈(721)을 향하는 경로로 가이드 한다.
도광부(733)의 형상이나 구조는 필요에 따라 얼마든지 다양하게 구성될 수 있는 것이며, 광학 소자의 구경이나 상이 맺히는 초점거리 등을 결정하기 위해 확대 광학계의 기본 원리가 적용될 수 있다.
도 14는 실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치의 구체적인 예를 나타낸 도면이다.
도 14는 영상 표시 장치(730)의 구체적인 예를 보인 것으로서, 디스플레이부(731), 렌즈(732), 및 도광부(733)가 구비되며, 디스플레이부(731)로부터 방출된 빛이 사용자의 눈(721)까지 이르는 광 경로가 표시되어 있다.
디스플레이부(731)와 렌즈(732)가 직접 대면하도록 배치되어 있으므로, 디스플레이부(731)가 방출하는 빛(영상)이 경로 변환의 필요없이 렌즈(732)에 직접 입사되고, 렌즈(732)에 입사되어 모인 빛은 도광부(733)를 통해 가이드되어 사용자의 눈(721)에 보이게 된다.
이때 사용자의 눈(721)에 보이는 영상은 필요에 따라 실상 또는 허상이 되도록 처리할 수 있으며, 공간에 영상이 표시되도록 처리할 수도 있다.
이상에서 실시예를 중심으로 설명하였으나 이는 단지 예시일 뿐 본 발명을 한정하는 것이 아니며, 본 발명이 속하는 분야의 통상의 지식을 가진 자라면 본 실시예의 본질적인 특성을 벗어나지 않는 범위에서 이상에 예시되지 않은 여러 가지의 변형과 응용이 가능함을 알 수 있을 것이다. 예를 들어, 실시예에 구체적으로 나타난 각 구성 요소는 변형하여 실시할 수 있는 것이다. 그리고 이러한 변형과 응용에 관계된 차이점들은 첨부된 청구 범위에서 규정하는 본 발명의 범위에 포함되는 것으로 해석되어야 할 것이다.
발명의 실시를 위한 형태는 전술한 "발명의 실시를 위한 최선의 형태"에서 충분히 설명되었다.
실시예에 따른 영상 표시 장치는 디스플레이부에 전달되는 광의 방향을 조절함으로써 광 손실을 최소화하여 광 효율을 개선하고 영상 표시 장치의 크기를 소형화할 수 있다.
Claims (20)
- 광원부;상기 광원부로부터 입사된 광을 가이드 하며, 상기 가이드 된 광을 디스플레이부로 출사하는 도광부; 및상기 디스플레이부와 마주보고, 상기 도광부 상에 배치된 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부를 포함하는 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제1 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부는 베이스 기판과 상기 베이스 기판 상에 형성된 홀로그램 패턴을 포함하는 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제2 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 굴절률은 상기 도광부의 굴절률보다 큰 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제2 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그램 패턴은 상기 도광부에서 출사되는 광을 콜리메이팅하는 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제2 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그램 패턴은 주기적으로 반복된 스트라이프 패턴인 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제5 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그램 패턴은 일 방향의 편광만 투과하는 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제2 항에 있어서, 상기 홀로그래픽 광학 소자부의 중심 영역과 상기 중심 영역을 둘러싼 가장 자리 영역에서의 상기 홀로그램 패턴은 서로 상이한 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제1 항에 있어서, 상기 도광부는 상기 광원부로부터 입사된 광을 면광원으로 변환하는 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 제1 항에 있어서, 상기 광원부는 상기 도광부의 적어도 하나의 측면에 배치된 프론트 라이트 유닛.
- 영상을 표시하는 디스플레이부;상기 디스플레이부의 전방에 배치되어 디스플레이부에서 출사된 빛의 경로를 변경하여 출사하는 펜타 프리즘; 및상기 펜타 프리즘에서 출사된 빛의 경로를 변경하여 관찰자에게 상기 디스플레이부에서 표시되는 영상의 확대 허상을 제공하는 허상 광학부를 포함하는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제10 항에 있어서, 상기 펜타 프리즘의 입사면과 출사면에는 렌즈가 일체로 더 형성되는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제10 항에 있어서,상기 허상 광학부는 상기 펜타 프리즘에서 출사되는 빛을 모으는 집광 렌즈;상기 집광 렌즈의 전방에 경사지게 형성되어 상기 집광 렌즈를 투과한 빛을 반사시키는 반사 미러를 포함하는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제12 항에 있어서, 상기 반사 미러는 반사되는 빛이 상기 관찰자 방향으로 출사되도록 반사면이 관찰자 방향에 형성되는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제10 항에 있어서,상기 허상 광학부는 상기 펜타 프리즘에서 출사되는 빛을 반사시키는 반사 미러; 및상기 하프 미러에서 출사되는 빛을 모으는 집광 렌즈를 포함하는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제14 항에 있어서, 상기 반사 미러는 반사되는 빛이 관찰자 방향으로 출사되도록 반사면이 관찰자 방향으로 형성되는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제10 항에 있어서,상기 허상 광학부는 상기 펜타 프리즘에서 출사되는 빛을 편광 성분에 따라 선택적으로 투과하는 편광 미러; 및상기 편광 미러에서 투과된 빛을 다시 편광 미러로 반사시키는 반사 미러를 포함하는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제16 항에 있어서, 상기 편광 미러는 상기 반사미러에 의해 반사된 빛이 상기 관찰자 방향으로 출사되도록 경사지게 형성되는 영상 표시 장치.
- 영상을 디스플레이하는 디스플레이부;상기 디스플레이부로부터 방출된 빛을 모으는 렌즈; 및상기 렌즈를 통해 모인 빛을 사람의 눈을 향하는 경로로 가이드 하는 도광부를 포함하고,상기 디스플레이부와 상기 렌즈는 상기 디스플레이부로부터 방출된 빛이 직접 상기 렌즈를 향하도록 배치되는 영상 표시 장치.
- 제18 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이부는 투명 디스플레이인 영상 표시 장치.
- 제18 항에 있어서, 상기 디스플레이부는 유기 발광 다이오드(OLED)로 구성되는 영상 표시 장치.
