Description

Device for Selective Shading of Dazzling Sources of Light. Technology Area
This invention concerns a device for selective shading of dazzling sources of light, which is applicable in road traffic, railway transport, aviation and in different other industrial branches, where dazzling is often a problem jeopardizing safety and reducing comfort of drivers, pilots as well as operators handling technology and working machines in industrial operations.
Current Technology Status
Dazzling by a high-intensity light is, in many cases, an unwelcome and frequently dangerous phenomenon, occurring primarily in road or railway traffic, in aviation and also, for example, in various industrial operations. Dazzling involves the impact of high-intensity light on the human eye, which can cope with such an effect only with great difficulty. Dazzling results in physiological discomfort and loss of capacity to distinguish details in one's field of view, which, in turn, may cause a collision situation in traffic or even lead to an accident The danger of dazzling is typically reduced by sunshades, screens and sun-visors, eventually dark sunglasses or various protective shields. However, the dazzling source of light need not be necessarily situated in the sector of one's field of vision that can be covered by a sunshade. For their part, dark sunglasses do darken the source of light but they may frequently cover up the remaining part of the watched scene in an undesirable fashion. That is why neither of the above devices is suitable for example in nighttime driving of a car or a train; the purpose of this invention is to eliminate those shortcomings in the most acceptable manner.
Substance of the Invention
The above shortcomings are eliminated to a great extent, and the purpose of this invention is met by the device for selective shading of dazzling sources of light; the device consists of a transparent imaging panel, a camera system and an image processor pursuant to the invention, whose substance is as follows: a transparent imaging panel is placed between the user and the source of light in the user's field of vision when the user is dazzled; the transparent imaging panel depicts a shading zone of the right eye and a shading zone of the left eye for each source of light, while the transparent imaging panel is connected to an image processor, which is connected to a head-held digital camera. The image processor is connected to at least one inner digital camera, which is turned towards the user's face. The transparent imaging panel is made by means of the LCD and/or another technology allowing for its transparency and constitutes an integral part of the windshield of a car, aircraft or a user cabin in case of a working machine and/or as a supplementary accessory thereto.
The advantages of this device pursuant to the invention lies primarily in that it may be integrated into the windshield of the vehicle or aircraft, and may become their standard or optional equipment designed to enhance traffic or operation safety. At the same time, the device may also be constructed as a mobile unit, which may be mounted in transport vehicles, eventually used in industrial operations where machine operators are threatened with dangerous dazzling, such as control rooms, crane cabins or similar workplaces.
Overview of Pictures on Drawings
For a more detailed clarification of the invention, the attached drawings portray the basic structural elements of the device, where Fig. 1 represents in a blueprint the standard design and the principle of the function of this device. Fig. 2 shows the device extended with an inner camera system recording the position of the user's eyes. Fig. 3 depicts a specific model design of the device installed in transport vehicles, as seen by the user, and Fig, 4 shows the device in front view, seen from the outside.
Example of the Execution of the Invention
Fig. 1 gives a schematic picture of the model design pursuant to the invention, highlighting the source of light I and the position of the user 7, between whom and the source of light I transparent imaging panel 4 is placed; that is made, for instance, with the advantage of the LCD technology. Transparent imaging panel 4 depicts on its surface shading zone 5 of the right eye and shading zone 6 of the left eye, while their position lies in the direction of the user's look 7 towards the source of light L Connected to transparent imaging panel 4 is image processor 3, which is connected to head-held digital camera 2.
Fig. 2 shows the source of light 1 and the position of the user 7, between whom and the source of light 1 transparent imaging panel 4 is placed, depicting on its surface shading zone 5 of the right eye and shading zone 6 of the left eye, while their position lies in the direction of the user's look 7 towards the source of light I, just as depicted in Fig. 1; connected to transparent imaging panel 4 is image processor 3^ which is connected to head-held digital camera 2; also connected to image processor is at least one inner digital camera 8, turned towards the face of the user 7. Fig. 3 shows the specific model design as seen by the user; destined for transport vehicles, this particular design is attached to sunshade 9; connected to its lower edge is module 10, equipped with control elements ii, in which inner digital cameras 8 and image processor 3 are integrated; attached to the lower edge of module JO is transparent imaging panel 4.
Fig. 4 shows an outside view of sunshade 9 to whose lower edge is attached module 10 and transparent imaging panel 4, and in which head-held digital camera 2 is evident in module 10.
The function of the device pursuant to the invention consists in utilizing the properties of the transparent imaging panel 4 made by means of the LCD technology or another imaging technology, allowing for transparency, while the user 7 is looking at the scene ahead of the vehicle through this transparent imaging panel 4. In this way, transparent imaging panel 4 at the same time becomes a screen for modified, monochromatic, negative video image of the scene being watched, recorded through a forward-directed head-held digital camera 2. The substance of image adjustment lies in the fact that only heavily dazzling sources of light 1 are depicted, while being represented negatively as shading zone 5 of the right eye and shading zone 6 of the left eye, appearing as dark targets and being in such a position as to cover up those dazzling sources of light 1 towards each eye separately. For this purpose, also the image has to be doubled so that both eyes could be shaded. The number of concurrently depicted shading zones is, therefore, typically double the number of the actual sources of dazzling.
The device can alternately contain at least one inner digital camera 8, recording the user's face 7 with the detection of his eyes, while image processor 3 evaluates their position. Proceeding from the determination of the position of the eyes, the scale and position of the shading image is adjusted in a way to cover, as seen from the direction of the user 7, only the sources of light 1 as the sources of dazzling, albeit with a minor overlap, and not the remnant of the scene being watched in the field of vision of the user 7.
The device may also be fully integrated into the windshield, for instance of a car or an aircraft. The device can also be an optional component of a series-manufactured transport vehicle or a working machine as its accessory.
Image processor 3 discharges the function of the calculating section of the device, processing as it does the detection of the position of the eyes of the user 7, based on the pictures from inner digital camera 8, and processing the visual signal, inversion into the negative, analysis of the limit of luminances, location and transformation of the scale; it is advantageously situated in module 10. Transparent imaging panel 4 is in a position which, seen in the line of vision of the user 7, covers the entire space in front of the vehicle in his field of view, thus making it possible, for instance, to shade selectively lights of oncoming vehicles. Shading zones 5 of the right eye and shading zones 6 of the left eye adjust their positions on transparent imaging panel 4 according to the position of the head and, therefore, of the eyes of the user 7 in a way that they are always situated in the direct line of vision between each eye of the user and the source of light 1, which is highly likely to cause dazzling. The device is fed from the vehicle's onboard electrical network.
