Description
Alice Perico .
Sewing a first fabric piece with a second fabric piece and sewing method. The present invention relates to sewing a first fabric piece with a second fabric piece.
Each fabric comprises an outer face and an inner face .
Therefore the invention relates to seams between fabrics and to methods for sewing fabrics.
In particular the invention relates to sewing trousers of the jeans type or the like.
Currently, both in jeans and in different articles of clothing, two fabric pieces are sewn together by the so called felled seam, that is each piece is folded on itself and the folded parts are placed in contact with each other such that the folded part of the first piece is interposed between the second piece and its folded part, while the folded part of the second piece is interposed between the first piece and its folded part.
Such method allows a strong seam to be obtained, that is a seam that hardly splits if subjected to forces acting on the two fabric pieces.
However the peculiarity of such "felled" seam, that is its strength, is also a negative aspect, since in case of high forces acting on the two fabrics, the felled seam does not split, but it causes at least one of the two fabrics to break or to be torn.
Moreover the seam in articles of clothing known in the prior art is a limitative critical element also as
regards the aesthetical point of view, above all in jeans, since it is as a discontinuity element in the fabric that is not enhanced.
Therefore there is a need not satisfied by seams and articles of clothing known in the prior art of solving both the functional and aesthetical drawbacks mentioned above.
The present invention achieves the above objects by providing a seam such as described above, wherein the edge of the first piece is folded on itself in the direction of the outer face, such to identify a first perimetral strip, while the second piece is sewn by at least one seam line to the first piece at the first perimetral strip, such that the inner face of the first piece is superimposed on the outer face of the second piece .
Therefore the two fabrics are not attached by a felled seam, but they are superimposed one each other and sewn: the folds, that is the folded pieces, do not penetrate into each other, but the folded edges of the two pieces are simply superimposed on each other and then sewn by at least one seam line.
Obviously it is possible to provide any number of seam lines, the higher the number is, the higher the offered strength will be.
The seam according to the present invention increases the weakness of the join between the two fabrics: in case of forces acting on the fabrics, the action of the forces is transferred only on the thread of the seam line or lines, without involving the
abrics .
Such characteristic allows a very advantageous effect to be obtained, since in case of high forces, the two fabrics come unstitched, but they are not torn or broken .
Therefore a weakness point is generated on the join between the two fabrics, such to prevent them from being torn.
Thus it is possible to mend in a simple manner the article of clothing composed of the two fabrics: it is sufficient to sew again the two pieces in the unstitched part, obtaining a "clean" repairing, that is without any additional sewing marks on the article of clothing .
Therefore the felled seam known in the prior art is eliminated such to decrease the strength of an article of clothing, while obtaining technical advantages .
By the seam of the present invention, therefore the strength is reduced such not to compromise the proper confectioning of the article of clothing, but such to obtain a relative weakness point where, in case of excessive stresses, the likelihood of breaking the seam is high.
Both the size and the number of threads of the seam line allow the strength of seam of the present invention to be modified, depending on the user needs.
Moreover as it will be clear from some shown embodiments, a pleasant aesthetical effect is also obtained.
The seam of the present invention allows the reverse side of the fabric to be enhanced, which is hidden in the seams known in the prior art.
Such characteristic has a particularly advantageous aspect in combination with the fact of providing a fabric having two different sides, as regards colour, drawing or texture and/or of using denim, the fabric the jeans trousers are made of.
Jeans trousers, in most cases, have two colours, blue on the outer side and white on the inner side, given by a warp (or chain) of a first colour and a weft of a second colour.
As it will be clear from the embodiments shown below, the seam of the present invention allows the difference between such two colours to be enhanced, using such difference to obtain an aesthetically pleasant effect.
As said above, according to a possible embodiment, at least the outer surface of the first piece has a colour, a drawing or a texture different than the inner surface of the first piece.
Preferably the inner surfaces of the first and second pieces have a first colour, and/or a first drawing and/or a first texture while the outer surfaces of the first and second pieces have a second colour, and/or a second drawing, and/or a second texture different from the first colour, the first drawing, the first texture.
The characteristics just described obviously allow many types of articles of clothing to be made, wherein
the fabrics are folded such to make more aesthetically pleasant seams that have a decorative aspect and that allow also the colours of the two fabrics to be combined.
Moreover unlike seams known in the prior art, the present invention allows an intermediate coloured and perfectly finished seam to be made both on the inside and outside of the fabric and in practice by only one sewing operation two pieces are closed and contemporaneously a decoration is generated that otherwise would be applied by another sewing operation.
The pieces of the first and second fabrics therefore can be folded one or more times such to obtain different aesthetical effects.
In particular according to a further variant embodiment, the edge of the second piece is folded on itself in the direction of the outer face, such to identify a second perimetral strip.
Moreover the second piece is sewn by at least one seam line to the first piece at the first and second perimetral strips, such that the inner face of the first pieces is superimposed on the second perimetral strip .
As an alternative the edge of the second piece is folded on itself in the direction of the inner face, such to identify a third perimetral strip.
The second piece is sewn by ay least one seam line to the first piece at the first and third perimetral strip, such that the inner face of the first piece is superimposed on the outer face of the second piece.
According to a further embodiment, the end edge of the first perimetral strip is folded on itself.
As an alternative or in combination the end edge of the second perimetral strip is folded on itself.
As an alternative or in combination the end edge of the third perimetral strip is folded on itself.
In one embodiment, wherein the fabrics of the first and second pieces are identical and have a same colour on the outer side and another colour in the inner side that is equal for the two pieces it is possible to make seams wherein the outer exposed piece of the seam is composed of the inner side of one of the two pieces joined together by the seam, therefore the colour of the seam being identical to that of the inner side of the fabric.
Considering the advantageous characteristics mentioned above the present invention relates also to an article of clothing composed at least of a first piece sewn to a second piece.
In particular the seam and/or the first piece and/or the second piece have one or more of the characteristics described above.
As said above, the invention relates particularly to trousers, more specifically to seams in jeans, therefore the article of clothing of the present invention preferably is composed of a pair of trousers.
Moreover the present invention relates to a method for sewing a first fabric piece to a second fabric piece, wherein each fabric comprises an outer face and an inner face.
Particularly the method of the present invention provides the following steps:
a) folding the edge of the first piece on itself in the direction of the outer face, such to identify a first perimetral strip,
b) sewing the second piece sewn by at least one seam line to the first piece at the first perimetral strip, such that the inner face of the first piece is superimposed on the outer face of the second piece.
The advantages obtained by the sewing method of the present invention are both functional and aesthetical ones and they are the same as the advantages mentioned about the seam of the present invention .
Accordingly the sewing as in step b) is carried out such to obtain one or more of the characteristics of the seam of the present invention mentioned above.
Finally the present invention relates to a folding member placed before a sewing station for sewing at least two fabric pieces, which are pushed into the folding member before being sewn together.
Each fabric comprises an outer face and an inner face .
As it will be clear from the shown embodiments, the folding member is such to obtain a seam of two fabrics having one or more of the characteristics described above, or that allows the sewing method of the present invention to be carried out.
In particular the folding member comprises a folding element for at least one of the two pieces,
which folding element has curved stationary walls with a substantially spiral-like shape.
Moreover the folding element provides an inlet border having a helical pattern in the direction of insertion of the fabric, such that the piece entering the folding element is folded on itself in the direction of the outer face.
Advantageously the folding member of the present invention provides a folding element for each fabric piece.
The two folding elements are superimposed on each other, such that the two pieces in the sewn condition are superimposed on each other .
These and other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will be more clear from the following description of some embodiments shown in the annexed drawings wherein:
Figs . la and lb are two views of a conventional seam based on prior art known methods ;
Figs. 2a and 2b are two views of a preferred variant embodiment of the seam of the present invention ;
Fig.3 is the different possible configurations that can be obtained by using the sewing method of the present invention;
Figs.4a and 4b are two variant embodiments of the article of clothing of the present invention;
Figs. 5a to 5d are different views of the folding member of the present invention.
It is specified that the figures show only some of
the several embodiments that can be obtained by using the seam and the sewing method of the present invention .
Therefore the shown embodiments have to be intended merely for illustrative purpose in order to better understand the characteristics and advantages of the present invention and therefore have not to be considered as a limitation of the inventive concept of the present invention that provides to make a seam enhancing the inner fabric of an article of clothing by using the difference between the article inside and the article outside as an aesthetical element.
Figs . la and lb show a seam known in the prior art, particularly they show a perspective view, figure la, and a sectional view, figure lb, thereof.
The seam shown in figure la is about a first fabric piece 1 sewn with a second fabric piece 2.
Each fabric piece comprises an outer face 11,21 and an inner face 12, 22.
It is specified that in the figures la and 2 the outer faces 11, 21 are identified by a thicker line, while the inner faces 12, 22 are identified by a thin line .
It is further specified that figures lb and 3 use a different representation and the outer faces and inner faces are easy to be identified on the basis of the positioning of the fabric pieces 1 and 2 that are denoted in such figures.
As it is clearly shown in figure la, the two fabric pieces 1 and 2, penetrate with each other,
namely the two end edges 13 and 23 are folded on themselves such that the first piece 1 is inserted into the second piece 2 and then such pieces are sewn by at least one preferably two seam lines 3, denoted by the broken line.
It is clear how such a seam allows the outer faces
11, 21 to be shown on the outside and the inner faces
12, 22 to be shown on the inside.
Unlike seams known in the prior art and described above, the seam of the present invention provides the edge of the first piece 1 to be folded on itself in the direction of the outer face 11, such to identify a first perimetral strip 121.
The second piece 2 is sewn by at least one seam line 3 with the first piece 1 at the first perimetral strip 121, such that the inner face 12 of the first piece 1 is superimposed on the outer face 22 of the second piece 2, for example see the fifth seam belonging to the second row and the fifth seam belonging to the first row of figure 3, denoted by number 6.
In particular in figure 2a a preferred embodiment of the seam of the present invention is shown, according to which the edge 23 of the second piece 2 is folded on itself in the direction of the outer face 21, such to identify a second perimetral strip 221.
The second piece 2 is sewn by two seam lines 3 with the first piece 1 at the first and said second perimetral strips 121 and 221, such that the inner face
perimetral strip 221.
The arrangement shown in figure 2a allows the two pieces 1 and 2 to be sewn such that the first perimetral strip 121 is on the outside, while the inner faces 12 and 22 of the pieces 1 and 2 are on the inside. Figure 2b shows a section of the seam of the present invention according to the embodiment of figure 2a.
Advantageously moreover the end edge 13 of the first perimetral strip 121 is folded on itself.
This allows aesthetically pleasant effects to be obtained above all in case the inner surfaces 12 and 22 of the first piece 1 and of the second piece 2 have a first colour, while the outer surfaces 11 and 21 of the first piece 1 and of the second piece 2 provide a second colour different from the first colour.
Figures 4a and 4b show such effect.
With a particular reference to figures 4a and 4b, the two fabric pieces 1 and 2 are used for making an article of clothing composed of a pair of trousers 4.
In particular the figures are about jeans trousers .
Figure 4a shows how the seam of the present invention can be used for any seam present in trousers 4, enhancing the first perimetral strip 121.
In order to enhance the first perimetral strip there are different folds that can be made on the pieces 1 and 2, in addition to those already described.
For example according to a possible embodiment, the edge of the second piece 2 is folded on itself in
the direction of the inner face 22, such to identify a third perimetral strip.
In this case the second piece 2 is sewn by at least one seam line 3 to the first piece 1 at the first and third perimetral strips, such that the inner face 12 of the first piece 1 is superimposed on the outer face 21 of the second piece 2.
As an alternative or in combination it is possible to provide the end edge of the first and/or second and/or third perimetral strip to be folded on itself.
The described characteristics can be obtained by the sewing method of the present invention that, in a first embodiment, provides the following steps:
a) folding the edge of the first piece 1 on itself in the direction of the outer face 11, such to identify a first perimetral strip 121,
b) sewing the second piece 2 sewn by at least one seam line 3 with the first piece 1 at the first perimetral strip 121, such that the inner face 12 of the first piece 1 is superimposed on the outer face 21 of the second piece 2.
Advantageously the sewing of step b) is carried out according to one or more of the characteristics described above.
By using in combination or as an alternative all the described characteristics it is possible to obtain several arrangements, some of which being shown in figure 3, each one providing a particular aesthetical effect .
The variant embodiment shown in figures 2a and 2b
can be obtained by the aid of a folding member, to which the present invention relates too.
Figures 5a to 5d show different views of a variant embodiment of the folding member, particularly a folding member for obtaining the seam of figure 2.
Such folding member is a folding station placed before a sewing station, such that the fabrics pass through such folding station, are folded in the desired manner , then are sewn together .
The sewing station has a working surface with a pressing element that provides an aperture penetrated by the needle, the two fabric pieces travel between the working surface and the pressing element such to be sewn by the needle.
With a particular reference to figures 5a to 5d the folding member of the present invention comprises a folding element 51 for at least one of the two pieces, which folding element has stationary curved walls with a substantially spiral-like shape.
The folding element has an inlet border, denoted by letter A in figure 5b, having a helical pattern in the direction of insertion of the fabric, such that the piece entering the folding element is folded on itself in the direction of the outer face.
Advantageously according to the variant embodiment shown in the figure, there is provided a folding element 51, 52 for each fabric piece.
The two folding elements 51 and 52 are superimposed on each other, such that the two pieces are superimposed on each other in the sewn condition.
The first piece 1 therefore is laid on the flat part 511 of the folding element 51, while the second piece 2 is laid on the flat part 521 of the folding element 52.
The two fabrics are fed in the direction denoted by the arrow A and the provision of the curved walls folds the two fabric pieces such to obtain the seam shown in figures 2a and 2b.
It is clear how the walls of the folding elements 51 and 52 have to exhibit a number of spirals equal to the number of folds that have to be carried out.
By the passage of the edges of the first piece 1 and of the second piece 2 into the curved walls of the folding elements 51 and 52, the perimetral strips 121 and 221 described above are obtained.
Moreover the two folding elements 51 and 52 in a position opposite to the inlet border have each one an outlet border, such that the two outlet borders are truncated and aligned on the same vertical plane such to allow the two pieces to be sewn once passing by the folding station.
Finally it is clear how by changing the mutual position of the folding elements 51 and 52, as well as by changing the shape of the curved walls, it is possible to obtain all the seams shown in figure 3.
It has to be noted how the seam according to the present invention and also the method can be applied also to other types of material for obtaining other types of products, such as for example, but not as a limitation, leather articles such as bags, shoes, belts
and other products and particularly but not as a limitation clothing accessories and/or home linen.
Other application fields can be covers for armchairs, seats, sofas both in houses and in vehicles, such as cars, trains and other types of vehicles.
