Description

Storage Lift for an Airplane
The invention relates to a storage lift for an airplane, comprising a first raising device, wherein the raising device is designed to releasingiy hold a first container, and wherein the raising device can be lifted with the container by means of a driving device in order to provide storage space for a second container. The invention further relates to an airplane galley with an inventive storage lift.
EP 1 174 340 B2 describes an automated galley cart storage system for a passenger airplane. A galley cart can be inserted into a lifting bracket and be lifted upwards with the bracket by means of a drive screw. This allows for insertion of a second galley cart into the space below the first galley cart.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a storage lift with an enhanced versatility.
This object is achieved by a storage lift for an airplane, comprising a first raising device, wherein the raising device is designed to releasingiy hold a first container, and wherein the raising device can be lifted with the container by means of a driving device in order to provide storage space for a second container, characterized in that at least a second raising device designed to releasingiy hold the second container is provided, wherein the raising devices are arranged as parts of a paternoster type lift. By the design of the storage lift as a paternoster, a yet bigger number of containers can be stored in the lift. Compared to the prior art, a container fetched from the storage lift can be selected deliberately by a respective movement of the paternoster type lift.
A paternoster type lift in the sense of the present invention is any lift which comprises an endless loop of a carrier device, like e.g. a chain, a belt or a cable. The respective raising devices are attached to the carrier device. The driving device of the storage lift can comprise any suitable electric, hydraulic or other motor.
The term raising device is presently understood as one of a plurality of moving stations of the paternoster type device. Hence, the raising device is not just moved upwards, but also downwards and/or sideways, depending on its present position. After being charged with a container, a first movement of the raising device can be upwards, downwards or even horizontal, depending on the actual arrangement of a loading position of the containers. Hence the initial movement of the container provides a free storage space for a second container, wherein a next raising device of the storage lift can be positioned in the storage space. The storage space can accordingly be sited above, under or sideways of the just moved container.
The container is releasingly held by a raising device in a sense that there is an engaged state when the container moves together with the raising device and a disengaged state when the raising device moves freely without the container. The raising device can comprise (or been designed as) any suitable holder for the container, e.g. a platform, a frame, a hook or the like.
In a first preferred embodiment of the invention, the at least one of the containers is a trolley of a galley of the airplane. A trolley in the sense of the present invention is a moveable cart with rolls to be moved around in the airplane. Passengers can be served with drinks and/or food and/or other supplies from the trolley. A trolley with respect to the present invention is basically the same item as the galley carts described in the above mentioned prior art document EP 1 74 340 B2. Such trolleys are preferably dimensioned according to international standards. Preferably, but not necessarily a trolley compatible with the invention meets the specifications of AEA-Standard G5278.
In a second embodiment of the invention, at least one of the containers is a standard unit. A standard unit in the sense of the present invention is a standardized container for multiple storage purposes on board of airplanes. Preferably, but not necessarily a standard unit is built according to the "ATLAS" or "KSSU" standard.
Generally preferred, the raising device comprises a clamp, the container being releasingly clamped to the raising device. This allows for a safe holding of the container even in cases of severe turbulences during a flight or even in crash situations. In particular, the clamp secures the container position within the storage lift against horizontal or other accelerations. If the container is a standard unit or a standardized trolley, the clamp mechanism can be designed to work with respective containers of different manufacturers.
In a generally preferred embodiment, the storage lift is designed as an integral part of a galley of the airplane. A galley in the present sense is the aviation kitchen of the aircraft, in particular a passenger aircraft.
In an advantageous further development, the storage lift is arranged in a recessed position with respect to a face of the galley. This allows for a large number of containers to be stored and distributed without limiting the operation area in front of the galley. In a particular embodiment, one of the containers can be horizontally moved out of the raising device, the container being completely released from the raising device when being at level with the face of the galley. Such arrangement allows for a change of the position of the storage lift whilst a selected / exchanged container keeps positioned in the galley, but does not protrude over the galley face.
A movement of the container from the raising device to a parking position within or in front of the galley can be performed by a driving mechanism or manually.
In a yet further embodiment of the invention, the raising device is designed to hold at least two, in particular at least three, of the containers arranged horizontally next to each other. This allows for a yet greater number of containers accommodates in the storage lift.
Generally preferred, a manual auxiliary drive is provided with the storage lift. This allows for an auxiliary operation of the storage lift even in case the driving device is out of operation.
The present invention further relates to an airplane galley with a storage lift according to the invention.
Further advantages and features derive from the exemplary embodiment described below and from the depending claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below and is further illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 shows a schematic drawing of a paternoster type storage lift according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a spatial view of an empty raising device of the storage lift from fig.
1.
Fig. 3 shows the raising device of fig. 2, wherein the device is loaded with three trolleys. Fig. 4 shows a schematic top view of a galley of a passenger airplane with an integrated inventive storage lift.
The storage lift shown in fig. 1 has a number of raising devices 1 which are each attached to a closed loop of a carrier device 2 in the form of a belt, chain or cable.
The flexible carrier device 2 is driven by a driving device 3, presently given in the form of a rotating drive. The arrangement of the raising devices 1 , the carrier device 2 and the rotating drive 3 together form a paternoster type storage lift. Hence the carrier devices can move simultaneously on a closed loop track in directions of movement M.
The respective carrier devices 1 , shown schematically in fig. 1 , can be loaded with containers in the form of trolleys 4 of a galley 5 of the passenger airplane.
As fig. 2 and fig. 3 show, each carrier device 1 can presently accommodate up to three trolleys 4 next to each other. Each trolley 4 is set into an independent holding frame 6, such that the carrier device 1 can carry any number of trolleys between zero and three in any position arrangement. The trolleys 4 are standardized and of the same make with respect to the standard.
For each of the three positions to load a trolley in, the carrier device 1 has a clamping device 7. Each clamping device 7 can attach a respective trolley releas- ingly to the carrier device, such that even in case of strong accelerations in horizontal or other directions, the trolleys are safely held in place.
Fig. 4 shows a schematic view of the galley 5 of a passenger airplane. The galley 5 has a face 8. Service personnel stands at the face in an operation area and operates the galley, e.g. warms up food, opens and closes compartment doors etc.. The personnel further stores trolleys 4 into or takes trolleys from the galley 5 before or after serving the passengers.
A paternoster type storage lift as described above is arranged in a recessed position with respect to the face 8. In the shown top view, the displayed carrier devices 1 are moving in directions perpendicular to the drawing plane.
An exchange area 9 is sited in front of the storage lift, wherein selected trolleys can be horizontally moved out of the carrier devices 1 and parked in the exchange area 9. In the drawing, the exchange area 9 is arranged horizontally centered with respect to the storage lift. This means that the carrier devices would be at a bottom (or top) position on their closed loop trajectory when the trolleys are loaded or unloaded. Other arrangements could be constructed in this respect. The storage lift could for example extend above or below a floor or roof level of the galley 5. Such arrangements would be particularly feasible on airplanes with more than one floor.
In the present example, the trolleys 4 are fully disengaged from the carrier devices 1 when parked in the exchange position, but still do not protrude over the face 8 of the galley. A horizontal movement of the trolleys 4 into and out of the carrier devices 1 from the exchange position is displayed by means of arrows. Just for example, unoccupied trolley positions are displayed with dashed lines and occupied spaces with solid lines.
In a further development, a trolley logistic system could be implemented, wherein the trolleys are identified by electronic tags (e.g. NFC tags). The storage lift could be operated in a fully automatic way by means of an electronic control unit. For example, an operator could demand for a specific trolley which is stored somewhere in the storage lift. The system would then automatically drive the storage lift to the respective position and dispense the demanded trolley into the exchange area 9.
