Definitions
- the present invention relates to a girdle for use in orthopedics for injury rehabilitation and prevention or in other fields (i.e. in sports) for prevention of lower spine and lumbar and abdominal injuries of a user.
- Girdles have been known for years and are composed of a belt, usually elastic, which is designed to encircle the waist of a user to assist the spine and the lumbar and abdominal muscles in torso support.
- girdles are required to encircle and adequately support the waist of the user.
- WO2006119827 discloses a corset comprising two substantially identical portions, each having a plurality of laces extending therefrom at the back portion (i.e. the one designed to be located near the spine of the user) of the corset.
- the laces that extend from the first portion of the corset cross with those that extend from the second portion (and vice versa) and are gathered into two groups, each connected to a loop engaged by a respective belt for tensioning the second portion of the corset.
- Each pair of belts for tensioning a portion of the corset (an upper portion and a lower portion) can be also released from the other portion of the corset, when the latter encircles the waist of user.
- a plurality of sizes (which may be as many as ten) shall be usually provided for each type of girdle, for the user to select the one that best fits his/her build.
- a girdle of a different size might have be purchased.
- girdle manufacturers shall be able to ensure availability of all sizes, which increases manufacturing and logistics costs.
- Certain girdles such as the one briefly described above, do allow for a certain degree of adaptation, such that they may be properly worn in a range of a couple of sizes (the same girdle may be used by users having two different but successive sizes) , but cannot be properly used in a wide range of sizes.
- the technical purpose of the present invention is to provide a girdle that obviates the above mentioned drawbacks.
- the present invention has the object of providing a girdle that may be properly used in a wide range of sizes.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide a girdle that can easily fit the size of the user and be easily worn.
- FIG. 1 shows a plan view of a girdle of the present invention
- FIG. 2 shows a portion of the girdle of Figure 1, which is not visible in Figure 1, with certain details omitted to better show other details;
- FIG. 3 shows the details of the girdle that are omitted in Figure 2;
- FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the girdle of Figure 1 in a different operating condition
- Figure 5 shows a detail of the girdle of Figure 1
- FIG. 6 shows the girdle of Figure 3 in a different operating condition.
- a girdle according to the present invention has been generally designated by numeral 1.
- the girdle 1 comprises a first portion 2 and a second portion 3, each in band form.
- the two portions 2, 3 are made of a flexible, non-elastic material, for them to conform to the curves of a user, without elastically extending to an appreciable or considerable extent.
- the two portions 2, 3 have free ends 2a, 3a, that are able to be removably fastened together.
- the term removably fastened is intended to indicate a connection between two elements that may be made and effected by a user and may be removed by the user him/herself.
- such type of fastening arrangement is given by a hook fabric area disposed on one of the two elements to be fastened, and designed for connection to a corresponding area of the other element that is made of a hairy fabric (or vice versa) , to form a Velcro® connection.
- a first plurality of strips 4 and a second plurality of strips 5 extend from respective end portions 2b, 3b (as shown in figures 2 and 3) of the first and second bands 2, 3 opposite to the above mentioned free ends 2a, 3a.
- the first plurality of strips 4 extends from first ends 4a toward the second portion 3 and the second plurality of strips 5 extends from first ends 5a toward the first portion 2.
- These strips are also made from a flexible, non- elastic material.
- the second ends 4b, 5b of the strips of the first 4 and second 5 pluralities are joined to respective first 6 and second 7 joining members respectively.
- the joining members 6, 7 include a retaining portion 8a, 9a in which the ends of the respective strips are firmly fastened together.
- the joining members 6, 7 further include respective loops 8, 9, which are designed to slidingly engage a respective strap 10, 11, as better described hereinafter.
- the girdle 1 also comprises tensioning members 12, 13, operating between the first joining members 6 and the second band 3 and between the second joining members 7 and the first band 2 respectively.
- a first tensioning member 12, 13 is permanently fastened to the first band 2 of the girdle, and adapted to be removably fastened to the second band 3, and operates on the first joining members 6 that are subtended by the first band 2 of the girdle.
- a second tensioning member 13 is permanently fastened to the second band 3 of the girdle, and adapted to be removably fastened to the first band 2, and operates on the second joining members 7 that are subtended by the second band 3 of the girdle.
- the tensioning members are also made from a flexible, non-elastic material.
- each tensioning member 12, 13 comprises a belt 14 (see Figure 5) having a first end 14a fastened to its respective girdle band and a second free end 14b designed to be held by a user.
- the second end 14b is adapted to be removably fastened to a corresponding area of a girdle band.
- the tensioning members 12, 13 further comprise the above mentioned straps 10, 11, which are engaged in the respective loops 8, 9 of the joining members.
- each strap 10, 11 comprises a first end 10a, 11a unremovably fastned to the first or second band respectively and a second free end 10b, lib having a loop 10c, 11c, which is slidably engaged by its respective belt 14 (see Figure 5) .
- the area at which the strap 10, 11 and its belt 14 are fastened to the first (or second) band is the same.
- each belt 14 By actuating the belts 14, the user may fasten the girdle (around his/her waist) , as schematically shown in Figure 4.
- the combined action of each belt 14 with its strap 10, 11, allows the joining members 6, 7 to be moved toward and/or away from the free end 2a, 3a of each band, thereby allowing adjustment of the compression degree of the girdle, once the latter has been worn.
- the combined action of the belt 14 and its strap 10, 11 affords very fine adjustment of such compression degree, as the above described coupling arrangement is designed such that any displacement of the belt 14 causes its joining member to be displaced in the same direction but to one third of the distance.
- the end portions 2b, 3b of the bands 2, 3 may be folded back over the first and second bands respectively and comprise fastening members 15 for fastening the end portion in a plurality of positions along its band, to thereby change the length of each band (as shown in Figure 2) .
- each band can be turned up over the band, to decrease or increase the length of the band (according to the length of the turned-up section) .
- the overall length of the girdle may be changed to fit a variety of sizes without affecting the wearability and effectiveness of the girdle.
- An important contribution to girdle effectiveness is given by the plurality of mutually crossed strips 4, 5, which maintain their effect irrespective of the length of the turned-up section of the end portions of the bands.
- the joining members 6, 7 and the tensioning members 12, 13 maintain the two plurality of strips 4, 5 in a tensioned state, thereby ensuring maximized effectiveness thereof.
- the fastening members 15 which allow removable fastening of the end portions of the bands when they are turned up, comprise a main tongue 15a (see Figure 2) at the free edge of each end portion 2b, 3b of the bands.
- This main tongue 15a removably engages portions of the second face B of its respective band 2, 3.
- Further auxiliary tongues 15b may be also provided (as shown in Figures 2 and 5) at the. opposite ends of the free edge of each end portion 2b, 3b of the bands 2, 3.
- the first and second bands 2, 3 comprise respective first A and second B opposite faces.
- the first plurality of strips 4 extend from the first face A of the first band 2 and the second plurality of strips 5 extend from the first face A of the second band 3.
- the first joining members 6 face toward the first face A of the second band 3 and the second joining members 7 face toward the first face A of the first band 2 (see Figure 1) .
- first ends 4a, 5a of both the first plurality of strips 4 and the second plurality of strips 5 lie in the rear portion of the girdle, i.e the portion designed for contact with the user's body.
- the tensioning members 12, 14 and the joining members 6, 7 lie on the side of the girdle that is opposite to the user's body.
- the girdle comprises first 16 and second stiffening members 17, operating at the first ends 4a, 5a of the first and second pluralities of strips 4, 5 respectively, to fasten them in position when the respective end portions 2b, 3b of the first and second bands 2, 3 are in the folded-back position.
- the stiffening members 16, 17 (which are only shown in Figures 3 and 6 for clarity) have the purpose of preventing any undesired movement of the portion of strips 4, 5 that lies over their respective band, thereby preventing (or limiting) any transverse movement between the two bands 2, 3 when they are being worn.
- each stiffening member 16, 17 comprises a rigid element 16a, 17a that extends along the entire transverse length of its respective band 2, 3 (as shown in Figure 3) and a plurality of loops (or eyelets) 16b, 17b, each slidably engaged by a strip of its respective plurality of strips 4, 5.
- the stiffening member also has the purpose to keep the strips in spaced relationship at the portions thereof upon which it acts.
- the rigid elements 16a, 17a are preferably covered with a flexible and inextensible material (substantially the same material as used for the bands 2, 3) and have coupling elements for removable fastening of the first plurality of strips 4 to the first band 2 and the second plurality of strips 5 to the second band 3
- the stiffening members 16, 17 act over their respective plurality of strips, i.e. on the side that faces the user's body. Particularly, in a direction away from the user's body (when the girdle is being worn) , a layered structure appears, with first the stiffening members, then the plurality of strips and finally the turned-up band portion.
- the end portions 2b, 3b of the first and second bands 2, 3 are first folded back such that the girdle may be configured for the selected size.
- the second face B of each band 2, 3 comprises indicia (not shown in the accompanying figures) at which the end portions 2b, 3b are designed to be folded.
- Each indicium is indicative of a predetermined size that the girdle may fit.
- the end portions 2b, 3b of the first and second bands 2, 3 are folded to the same extent, for the two bands 2, 3 to have the same length. Then the stiffening members 16, 17 are actuated to lock in position the strip portions 4, 5 located in the rear portion of the girdle.
- the user seizes the two bands 2, 3 of the girdle and draws them near his/her waist thereby partially encircling the latter.
- the user overlaps the free ends 2a, 3a of the girdle bands and actuates the removable fastening arrangement (of the Velcro® type, as described above) .
- This will cause the girdle to encircle the waist of the user in a closed loop and to remain in position.
- the user seizes the belts 14 and pulls them toward the overlapped ends of the girdle portions.
- the belts act indirectly upon the joining members 6, 7, that will stretch the pluralities of strips 4, 5.
- the belts 14 act upon the straps 10, 11, which act upon the joining members 6, 7 such that the translation of the belts 14 is imparted, in reduced form, to the joining members 6, 7. If the belts 14 are further pulled, the two girdle portions 2, 3 (and particularly the mutually facing folded ends 2b 3b thereof) will be drawn further toward each other and thus allow the girdle to tightly fit on the user's body. Finally, the ends of the belts 14 are removably fastened to each other to maintain the tension so achieved.
- the stiffening members may consist of stays to be inserted in the loops formed upon folding back the end portions 2b, 3b of the bands 2, 3. All of these variants and changes fall within scope of the invention, as defined in the following claims.
