Description
A MUSCLE STIMULATING DEVICE
The present invention relates to a device which prevents injuries and damages that can occur in individual's extremities especially in car accidents.
In the state of the art, it is known that muscles of the extremities are stimulated according to the information received from the sensors in order to enable movements in people with movement impairments in some extremities.
Japanese Patent application document no 20023SS236, which is known in the state of the art, discloses a two dimensional acceleration sensor which is attached to the body, and electrical stimulation of muscles are related with the disabled extremity in certain time intervals according to the data received from the sensor.
Korean Patent document no 20130043407, which is another application known in the state of the art, discloses the stimulation of the ankle joint muscles of people in rehabilitation process in certain time intervals considering walking pattern.
The inventive muscle stimulating device comprises a band which can be attached to one or more than one extremity of a person, at least one power supply located on the band, a control unit, at least one sensor which detects the involuntary movement of the extremity on which the band is attached as a result of the forces it is subjected to, at least one stimulator which stimulates the muscle of the extremity on which the band is attached for a certain time by being activated according to the data received from the sensor.
With the present invention, the involuntary movement of the extremity on which the device is attached is detected with a single device, and the stimulation of the muscles of the extremity on which the device is attached is enabled. Therefore, injuries and the damages that can occur due to the forces caused by the accident with which the person has experienced or the activity which they have made.
In the research which has been performed within the scope of the present invention, it is determined that most of the injuries and the damages in the neck area especially in rear end collisions occur within first 100ms until the head of the individual hits the backrest from the moment of the collision. With this invention, the abnormal movement of the extremity is detected by the muscle stimulating device within the said time period, and the muscles of the extremity to which the muscle stimulating device is attached is enabled to be hardened by being stimulated electrically for a certain time. Therefore, possible injuries and damages that can occur in the extremity due to abnormal movement are minimized.
In one embodiment of the invention, the muscle stimulating device is attached to the neck of the individual. As soon as an abnormal movement is detected in the neck area by the sensors provided on the muscle stimulating device, the stimulators are triggered by the control unit, and the stimulators are activated, and the muscles of the extremity, especially sternocleidomastoideus, scalenus and trapezius muscles in the neck are enabled to be stimulated from at least one point. The stimulated muscles are hardened, and the possible injuries and damages that can occur especially in the soft tissue of the neck as a result of the involuntary movement caused by the force applied on the extremity are prevented.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, electrode is used as stimulator. The electrodes can be in strip or diaresis form. The electrodes are placed on the band by surrounding it such that they will contact the extremity on which the muscle stimulating device is attached. Therefore all muscles of the extremity on which the muscle stimulating device is attached are enabled to be stimulated.
The figures of the muscle stimulating device developed in order to achieve the objective of the present invention are as follows:

The elements given in the figures are numbered as follows:
1. Muscle stimulating device
2. Band
3. Stimulator
4. Internal sensor
5. Control unit
6. Fixing member
7. Power supply
8. Communication unit
9. External sensor
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the muscle stimulating device (1) comprises at least one band (2) which can be attached to one or more than one extremity of an individual, at least one power supply (7), at least one internal
sensor (4) which is located on the band (2) and detects the movement of the extremity on which the band (2) is attached, at least one external sensor (9) which is located on the individual or around them, a communication unit (8) which receives data from the internal and external sensors (4 and 9), and at least one stimulator (3) which is provided on the band (2) and stimulates the muscle of the extremity on which the band (2) is attached. The muscle stimulating device (1) has a control unit (S) which processes the data received from the communication unit (8) with the program embedded therein, detects the movement of the extremity according to the processed data, and enables to compare with the values determined by the manufacturer and create a signal in case these values are exceeded, and stimulate the muscle of the extremity for a certain time by activating the stimulator (3) with the said signal (Figure 1).
Actually, the abnormal movement of the extremity is detected with this invention, and the stimulators (3) are activated according to this movement. Abnormal movement is the involuntary movement of the individual's extremities as a result of the forces they are subjected to. The extremities of the individual can get damaged or injured as a result of the abnormal movements. Especially moving extremities of an individual such as hand, foot, leg, neck, shoulder, etc. are subjected to various forces in cases such as traffic accidents, sports activities etc., and they can perform involuntary movements. Since the suitable muscles of the individuals cannot be activated as a result of these involuntary movements, injuries and damages occur in these related extremities. With this invention, the involuntary movements due to the forces which the person is subjected to are detected with the help of internal and external sensors (4 and 9), the muscles of the extremity are stimulated with the muscle stimulating device (1) attached to the extremity at the movement when the involuntary movement occurs, and the related muscle or muscles are enabled to be hardened and a certain amount of stability is provided to the extremity, and possible injuries and damages are avoided.
In this embodiment, the control unit (5) processes the data collected by the communication unit (8) from the internal and external sensors (4 and 9) via a program. The said processed data are compared with the data predetermined by the manufacturer and provided by calculating the abnormal movements of the extremity, if this value is outside the values determined by the manufacturer; a signal is generated by the control unit (5). The stimulator (3) is activated with this signal, and the extremity to which the band (2) is attached and the muscle connected to this are enabled to be stimulated for a determined time and intensity determined by the manufacturer by the stimulator (3).
The communication unit gathers data from one or more than one internal and external sensor (4 and 9) placed on a vehicle or body.
The control unit (5) activates the stimulator 3) if the values obtained from the internal and external sensors (4 and 9) by the communication unit (8) are higher than a value determined by the manufacturer.

In this embodiment, the acceleration of the vehicle is detected when it exceeds an acceleration value determined by the manufacturer, especially rear end collisions, sudden brake, and similar cases are detected, and thus the stimulator (3) is enabled to be activated.
In one embodiment of the invention, the external sensor (9) is mounted on the safety belt mechanism, and detects the movement of the safety belt. When the
safety belt moves at a value higher than the value determined by the manufacturer, the stimulator (3) is activated.
In another embodiment of the invention, the external sensor (9) is mounted on the airbag mechanism. The stimulator (3) is also activated as soon as the airbag becomes active.
In one embodiment of the invention, the muscle stimulating device (1) is attached to any one of the moving extremities of an individual. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the band (2) is attached to the neck of the individual; therefore the internal sensor (4) detects the neck movement of the individual. In this embodiment, the external sensor (9) is attached to the back of the individual's body. Therefore, the control unit processes the data received from both internal and external sensors (4 and 9) by the communication unit (8), the movement of the neck relative to the body is evaluated, and if it is outside of the values determined by the manufacturer, the abnormal movement of the neck is detected, and the stimulator is activated by the control unit (5); preferably the sternocleidomastoideus, scalenus and trapezius muscles in the neck are enabled to be stimulated from at least one point.
In this embodiment of the invention, the muscle stimulating device (1) is used by wrapping the band (2) around the person's neck. In this embodiment, the band (2) is wrapped around the neck of the individual such that the stimulators (3) will contact the neck of the individual. In this embodiment of the invention, the stimulators (3) are placed such that they will stimulate sternocleidomastoideus, scalenus and trapezius muscles in the neck from at least one point.
Especially when there is a rear end collision, the data received from the internal sensors (4) attached on the people inside the vehicle and the external sensors (9) attached on the vehicle are gathered by the communication unit (8), and these data are processed, and the abnormal movement of the extremity to which the muscle stimulating device is attached, and a signal is generated. Especially when the muscle stimulating device is attached to the neck, before the head of the individuals hit the headrest, i.e. until the head hits the headrest or within 100 ms maximum, the stimulator (3) is activated by the control unit (5), and the muscle stimulating device (1) attached to the neck enables the muscles in the neck to be hardened by stimulation. Therefore, neck injuries and damages that can occur due to accident are avoided.
With this invention, within the period until the related muscles of the individual is stimulated by itself in rear end collisions- this period is almost 50- 100ms- the neck muscles are enabled to be stimulated by the stimulator (3) by activating it and injuries and damages are avoided by enabling the related muscles to be hardened.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the stimulator (3) comprises at least one electrode. The electrodes are placed such that they will contact the skin. The electrode transfers the electric energy which is generated by the power supply (7) and the amount of which is determined by the manufacturer to the extremity to which the muscle stimulating device (1) is attached for a certain time which is also determined by the manufacturer. In the inventive embodiment, the amount and time of electric energy applied on the extremity by the electrodes is the time and amount which will enable the muscles of the extremity to which the band (2) is attached to be hardened. The energy is cut off by the control unit (5) when this time is up. The electrodes can be in form of points as well as they can be as strips.
