Definitions
- the invention concerns shipbuilding and sea transport, in particular, liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers using transported natural gas in liquefied state as the main fuel and, more specifically, to the gas providing systems of ship consumers through effective utilization of continuously generated gas in cargo tanks by natural evaporation of LNG.
- LNG liquefied natural gas
- LNG is basically methane (CH 4 ) liquefied at temperature -162°C and atmospheric pressure with volume correlation of a liquid phase to gaseous one, approximately, 1 :600 and of specific density of liquid phase from 0,43 to 0,50 t/m 3 .
- the carrier is a vessel for LNG transportation by water from points of production to the ports of consumers.
- main power installations of LNG carriers are equipped with several two-fuel diesel generator sets, which can work both on natural gas and fuel oil: diesel fuel (MDO) and black oils (NFO).
- MDO natural gas and fuel
- NFO black oils
- the configuration of the main power installation including several two-fuel diesel generators, allows to use any of these types of fuel on each of the diesel generators and to switch from one to another, if necessary.
- the rate of gas generation can be shortly increased by 1 ,5 - 2 times.
- LNG carrier of 200 thousand m 3 tonnage up to 300 m 3 of LNG can be converted into gaseous state, that corresponds to 180 thousand m 3 of gas, while inner consumption of gas in a standing mode can approximately amount to 10% of its volume.
- the capacity and speed of an LNG carrier at which gas consumption by power installations of a vessel is equal to the intensity of its generation in cargo tanks are usually considered to be called equivalent.
- Modern supersize LNG carriers with capacity up to 200 thousand m 3 and more are designed for operational loaded speed from 19 to 21 knots while equivalent loaded speed is between 17 - 18 knots, from what follows, that, as a rule, at a normal mode of movement LNG carriers consume gas more than it is generated in cargo tankers in a natural way.
- the missing amount of gas is compensated by regasification of LNG, i.e. by compulsory converting of the necessary amount of LNG, taken from cargo tanks, from a liquid state to the gaseous in the specialized ship regasification system.
- shortage of fuel resources can be compensated by switching one or several diesel engine generators of the main power installation to oil fuel. If it's taken for a basis that operational speed is below the equivalent, then the gas generated in cargo tanks constantly exceeds the gas consumed by power installations of the vessel. This excess is considerably increased at both delay of the vessel and its standing.
- the choice of a suitable way depends substantially on the operating speed of the vessel and prescribed schedules of delays and stops on a route and is a separate technical and economic task.
- a vessel operating speed is below the equivalent, constantly generating gas in cargo tanks will be superfluous during the whole time of a circular trip, with considerable possible increase of generation to 100% at delays and standing.
- the way of reliquefaction of gas generating in tanks and its return in the state of LNG to cargo tanks can be an effective one.
- High cost of ship installations of reliquefaction of gas, their technological complexity and high specific power consumption belong to shortcomings of the specified way.
- the task of the proposed invention is to ensure rational use of gas in a vessel power installation, continuously generated in cargo tanks of a LNG carrier, due to the application of another, than existing way of the arrangement of the system of providing ship consumers with gas fuel and, first of all, due to effective and full use of gas continuously generated in cargo tanks by natural evaporation of LNG. That means, the proposed invention will decrease the consumption of LNG used as the fuel of LNG carriers.
- the technical result stated above is achieved when using a way of gas fuel supply to power installations of LNG carriers.
- the way provides the offtake of BOG from cargo tanks into the feeding gas main with controlling gas consumption and venting a part of its stream from the said gas main.
- natural generation of BOG and gas consumption by ship consumers are controlled at the same time. Proceeding from results of the said control, it is controlled the stream of BOG in the said gas main, including one between the said gas main and high pressure tanks (HP tanks), accumulating BOG.
- HP tanks high pressure tanks
- BOG is taken off from said HP tanks for return supply in the feeding gas main.
- gas passed through a regazification installation is taken into the gas main.
- the term "cargo tank” used in the invention should include all cargo tanks of an LNG carrier, with dome spaces being coupled by a common pipeline system, which is, respectively, connected to the input of the low pressure compressor (LPC).
- LPC low pressure compressor
- HP tanks for example, are coupled among themselves consecutively, as shown in the drawing, however, they can be coupled by any other way.
- HP tanks with opened valve 9 on gas main M7 and then M11 can be emptied from CNG by pumping it out on the shore (if necessary, with reduction of pressure to value, used at the terminal) for further usage.
- control of gas streams of an LNG carrier fuel system is carried out, as a rule, in an automatic mode based on the indications of control and measuring devices, mainly including pressure sensors, measuring the pressure practically in all gas mains and vessels, sensors of temperature, gas consumption and control of gas mixture and others. Results of measuring parameters, constantly coming to a control center are processed by the systems of automatic control, analyzed on a computer system, therefore control signals are given to operating mechanisms and devises: compressors, pumps, valves, reducers, throttles and other operating mechanisms, devices and LNG carrier systems.
