Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for measuring the amount of beryllium present in a radioactive object and, more particularly, in plutonium waste contained in powder form in containers.
- Beryllium is a metal whose traceability is necessary in objects likely to contain it and, more particularly, in radioactive objects.
- radiochemical analysis such as, for example, fluorometry (beryllium then forms a complex with a ligand which has fluorescence properties), laser-induced atomic emission spectrometry (emission of visible or ultraviolet radiation under the action of excitation), infrared spectrometry (beryllium is extracted under a chemical form whose infrared emission is measured by an infrared spectrometer), etc.
- ⁇ gamma photons are bombarded on beryllium ( 9 Be).
- a gamma photon of sufficient energy that interacts with a beryllium nucleus produces a photoneutron n.
- the photoneutrons produced are then counted and the amount of beryllium is deduced from the counting information.
- the document "Determination of Beryllium by Use of Photonuclear Activation Techniques" (A. Moussavi-Zarandi / Applied Radiation and Isotopes 66 (2008) page 158-161) discloses such a technique.
- a sample of beryllium-containing material is irradiated with photons from a 124 Sb source.
- the photoneutrons that result from this irradiation are counted and the neutron count leads to the determination of the amount of beryllium present in the sample.
- a disadvantage of this technique is being intrusive and working on small samples.
- the information on the amount of beryllium present in the object under study is therefore not representative in the case where the beryllium is not homogeneously distributed in a large object, for example an object of volume greater than one liter.
- the object is radioactive, there is a strong neutron noise due to the radioactivity of the object which disturbs the measurement, such as the noise due to the neutron emission of plutonium (Pu).
- the device of the invention does not have the drawbacks mentioned above.
- the invention relates to a device for measuring the amount of beryllium in a radioactive object, the device comprising:
- a hollow cylinder consisting of a part made of a material adapted to heat the neutrons emitted by the radioactive object and a metal part capable of attenuating the dose rate on the radioactive object, the piece of suitable material.
- the metal part comprising a solid part inserted into a space corresponding to the wall fraction amputated of the piece made of a material suitable for thermalizing the neutrons and a recessed portion which extends the solid part and is housed inside the wall of the part made of a material capable of thermalizing the neutrons, in contact with the part made of a material suitable for thermalizing the neutrons,
- a source of gamma radiation housed in a recess in the recessed part of the metal part
- At least one neutron detector placed in the mass of the part made of a material suitable for thermalizing the neutrons.
- the neutron detector is a helium gas counter 3.
- the gamma radiation source is a point source.
- the device further comprises means adapted to move the source along an axis substantially parallel to the axis of the hollow cylinder.
- the gamma radiation source is a linear source fixed in the recess of the recessed part of the metal part and having an axis substantially parallel to the axis of the hollow cylinder.
- the device comprises means capable of rotating the radioactive object.
- the gamma radiation source is a source of 124 Sb.
- the hollow cylinder is a hollow cylinder of revolution.
- a plurality of neutron detectors are uniformly distributed in the piece of material capable of thermalizing the neutrons, at an equal distance from each other. a center of a circle defined by the circular straight section of the hollow cylinder of revolution.
- the material capable of thermalizing neutrons is polyethylene.
- the metal piece is a lead piece.
- a distance separating, in the part made of material suitable for thermalizing neutrons, the metal part of a detector of neutrons is less than or equal to 5 cm and a distance which separates, in the part made of material suitable for thermalizing neutrons, a neutron detector of an outer surface which delimits the part made of material suitable for thermalizing neutrons is superior or equal to 2 cm.
- the distance between the metal part of a neutron detector is less than or equal to 3 cm and the distance between a neutron detector and an outer surface which delimits the piece made of material capable of thermalizing neutrons is substantially between 2cm and 4cm.
- the device of the invention is designed to minimize the disturbance caused by the neutron noise due to the radioactivity of the object.
- the device of the invention is also able to determine and quantify the amount of beryllium present in a bulky object in which the beryllium is not distributed uniformly.
- FIGS. 1A and 1B show a perspective view and a top view of a device for measuring the amount of beryllium in a radioactive object according to the invention
- Figure 2 shows a sectional view of a simplified structure used to model the main components of the device of the invention
- FIGS. 3A and 3B show a view from above and a view in longitudinal section of an improvement of the device for measuring the amount of beryllium in a radioactive object according to the invention.
- Figures 1A and 1B show a perspective view and a top view of a device for measuring the amount of beryllium in a radioactive object, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention.
- the device of the invention comprises:
- a hollow cylindrical block formed of a piece 1 made of material capable of thermalizing the neutrons emitted by the radioactive object and of a metal part 2 able to attenuate the dose rate on the radioactive object and which is housed in the piece of material adapted to heat the neutrons, the radioactive object 5 being itself placed in the hollow of the hollow cylindrical block,
- a source of gamma radiation 4 placed in a recess in the hollow part of the metal part 2 and which emits gamma radiation in the direction of the object to be studied, and
- At least one neutron detector 3 placed in the body of the part 1 made of material adapted to heat the neutrons.
- the material capable of thermalizing the neutrons is polyethylene, the metal part is a lead part and the neutron detector is a helium 3 gas meter ( 3 He).
- the neutron detector is a helium 3 gas meter ( 3 He).
- the material suitable for thermalizing the neutrons may be paraffin or water or graphite, etc.
- the metal may be a metal other than lead, and - the neutron detector can be other than gaseous helium counter 3 (3 He) such as, for example, a gas meter boron deposit.
- gaseous helium counter 3 (3 He) such as, for example, a gas meter boron deposit.
- the polyethylene part 1 has a hollow cylinder shape amputated a wall fraction.
- the lead part 2 comprises a solid part 2a inserted into the space corresponding to the amputated wall fraction of the piece of polyethylene 1 and a recessed part 2b which extends the solid part and is housed inside the wall of the polyethylene part 1, in contact with the polyethylene part.
- a gamma radiation source 4 is housed in a recess in the recessed part of the lead part 2.
- At least one neutron detector (eleven detectors are shown in FIG. 1B) is placed in the mass of the polyethylene part 1.
- the purpose of the lead part 2 is to limit the dose rate at the level of the neutron detectors.
- the lead piece has a thickness chosen for this purpose.
- the dose rate limit is around 0.1 g / h gamma.
- the lead part 2 also makes it possible to protect the operators from the irradiation of the gamma radiation source. For this protection, screens and / or exclusion zone to prohibit the approach of the device may also be considered.
- the lead part 2 also has the advantage of limiting, if necessary, the rate of production of photoneutron parasites in elements other than beryllium such as, for example, the deuterium that is present in the polyethylene.
- the source of gamma radiation 4 is a point or linear source.
- the device of the invention preferably comprises means capable of ensuring a displacement along the axis of the cylinder.
- the source is linear, it is fixed on the piece of lead, for example using a stainless steel tube placed in a notch of the lead piece.
- the linear source is longer (for example twice as long) as the height of the object under study.
- the device of the invention also comprises means capable of rotating the object studied around the axis of the hollow cylinder.
- the device for the invention makes it possible to homogenise the irradiation of the object, thus minimizing the uncertainty that exists as to the distribution of beryllium in the object.
- detectors 3 are preferably uniformly distributed, on the same circumference, in the polyethylene part 1 around the object 5.
- the source of gamma radiation is preferably a source of 124 Sb.
- the source of 124 Sb has a main radiation of 1691 keV which favors the following nuclear reaction:
- the triggering threshold of this reaction is located at 1666 keV, without there being excitation of other elements likely to exist in the studied object, which have a threshold much higher than this level of energy.
- the photoneutrons emitted in this nuclear reaction therefore have an energy of the order of 25keV (1691keV-1666keV).
- the neutron detector (s) 3 count (s) the n neutrons that result from this nuclear reaction.
- the counting of neutrons makes it possible to determine the quantity of beryllium that is present in the object, via a multiplication coefficient of calibration measured or calculated by numerical simulation.
- the device of the invention advantageously makes it possible to favor the detection of photoneutrons with respect to the detection of neutrons emitted spontaneously by the measured object. This makes it possible to very substantially improve the signal-to-noise ratio and therefore the statistical accuracy on the net noise signal.
- Neutrons that participate in neutron background noise result either from spontaneous fission with an average energy of neutrons emitted in the order of 2 MeV, or from a reaction ( ⁇ , ⁇ ) with an average energy of neutrons emitted greater than MeV, for example 4.2 MeV for the reaction 9 Be (a, n) in the presence of intense alpha emitters such as 238 Pu, 241 Am, etc.
- the best signal-to-noise ratio performance is obtained by the judicious choice of the position of the neutron detectors in the thickness of the polyethylene part.
- Figure 2 shows a sectional view of a simplified structure used to model the main components of the device of the invention.
- the structure chosen for the modeling is a sphere of metal powder S of radius r surrounded by a succession of spherical layers, namely: a lead layer Ci of thickness e 0 , a first layer of polyethylene Ci of thickness ei, a layer of helium gas 3 C3 of thickness and a second layer of polyethylene C 4 of thickness e2.
- the structure shown in FIG. 2 makes it possible to optimize the thicknesses of the polyethylene layers which are placed, in the device of the invention, in front of and behind the gaseous helium counters 3.
- the radius r of the sphere S is equal to 4.3 cm and the thickness in the helium gas layer 3 is equal to 2.54 cm.
- the lead layer Ci has a thickness e o chosen to limit the dose rate at the detectors, for example LCM. It is considered that the neutrons are emitted homogeneously in the sphere of metal powder. Two energy spectra are used for modeling, ie representative 25 keV neutron photoneutrons from the reactions ( ⁇ , n) Beryllium and a spectrum that corresponds to the spontaneous fission neutron 2 0 Pu which are a significant source of noise passive background.
- Table 1 gives the values of the detection efficiency of the neutrons emitted by reaction (y, n) on beryllium as a function of the thicknesses ei and e2.
- the neutron detection efficiency having a given energy spectrum is, by definition, the ratio between the number of detected shots and the number of neutrons emitted which present the energy spectrum.
- the first row of Table 1 consists of different values of the thickness ei and the first column consists of different values of the thickness e2.
- the detection efficiency is greater than 15%, which is very satisfactory.
- the detection efficiency goes through a maximum when ei increases. This is due to two antagonistic effects: the slowing down (or thermalization) of the neutrons in the polyethylene which favors their detection by helium 3 and the absorption of the neutrons thermalised in this same polyethylene.
- Table 2 shows the detection efficiency of spontaneous fission neutrons of 240 Pu as a function of the thicknesses ei and e2.
- the thickness ei is also carried in the first row of the table and the thickness e2 in the first column, each intersection (ei, e2) giving the associated value of the detection efficiency.
- Table 3 illustrates the ratio of the detection efficiencies given in Tables 1 and 2.
- the thickness ei is carried on the first row of the table and the thickness e 2 is carried on the first column.
- the ratio R of the detection efficiencies takes the highest values for the lowest thicknesses ei and e 2 .
- the detection efficiency of the photoneutrons also takes, in these cases (small thicknesses ei and e 2 ), the lowest values (see Table 1).
- the choice of the optimal thicknesses e 1 and e 2 is thus effected by a compromise between the value of the ratio R and the value of the detection efficiency of the photoneutrons.
- a thickness ei equal to 1.5 cm and a thickness e 2 equal to 3 cm have been retained for the device shown in FIG. 1A and 1B.
- the other dimensions of the device are:
- Inner diameter dl of the hollow cylinder 10.6 cm
- Thickness of the wall of the hollowed out piece of lead which is housed in contact with the polyethylene part 1 cm
- Length of the linear source 25cm (the source being centered inside the hollow cylinder).
- Diameter D of a neutron detector 2.54 cm
- the structure of the invention makes it possible to implement an advantageously simple method of measuring the amount of beryllium which minimizes the noise due to the intrinsic neutron emission of the objects measured and leads to reliable and accurate results.
- the beryllium quantity measurement method implemented with the device of the invention comprises a step of measuring the intrinsic neutron noise emitted by the radioactive object. This measurement is performed in the absence of a radiation source. The intrinsic noise is then subtracted from the measured signal in the presence of the radiation source. As is known to those skilled in the art, this subtraction of the intrinsic noise introduces a statistical uncertainty on the measured useful signal. Advantageously, this uncertainty is greatly reduced thanks to the device of the invention.
- the device of the invention makes it possible to carry out passive neutron counting. It is then possible to measure the amount of plutonium that is present in the object.
- a neutron coincidence measurement is generally necessary, in this case, to discriminate, in a manner known per se, the useful signal emitted by the plutonium during spontaneous fission reactions, the background noise due to the presence of alpha emitters, in particular. because of reactions (a, n) on light nuclei such as those of beryllium or oxygen.
- This coincidence measurement requires, in a manner known per se, the presence of at least two neutron detectors and an electronics of treatment capable of managing coincidences.
- the quasi-polyethylene cylinder 1 is then completely covered with cadmium plates 6 to limit, in a manner known per se, the lifetime of the neutrons in the detection device and thus promote the analysis of neutron coincidences (see FIGS. and 3B).
- the detection efficiency of the latter remains advantageously sufficient (typically greater than 20% for the device shown in Figure 1) to allow for coincidence analysis.
