Abstract

The present invention relates to a drum (1) comprising a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular sheet metal (A), a circular cover (3) mounted to the rear side of the body (2), a circular fold (4) enabling the rear edge of the body (2) to be joined with the cover (3), a drum spider (6) having more than one spider arm (5) that enables the movement of the electric motor and the transmission elements to be transferred to the body (2), and a circular flange (7) that surrounds the rear side of the body (2) and enables the spider arms (5) extending from the body (2) towards the fold (4) to be connected to the body (2).

Description

A DRUM WITH IMPROVED MECHANICAL STRENGTH AND THE PRODUCTION METHOD THEREOF
The present invention relates to a drum that is suitable for using in laundry washing or washing-drying machines, and the production method thereof.
In laundry washing or washing-drying machines, laundry is loaded into a drum, the drum is rotated by means of an electric motor and washing, spin-drying and drying processes are realized. In the state of the art, for the production of the drum, a rectangular sheet metal is bent into a cylinder and the peripheries that face one another are joined and thus, the hollow cylindrical body of the drum is formed. The front and rear sides of the cylindrical body are covered by a circular front cover, whereon the laundry loading opening is located, and a rear cover. Spider arms, that transfer energy generated by the electric motor to the drum and thus enable the drum to rotate, are connected onto the circular line where the sheet metal and the rear cover are joined. Due to the rotational movement of the drum, forces act in the radial and axial directions onto the joint where the spider arms are connected with the sheet metal and the rear cover. Due to the acting forces, the drum is deformed in the course of time, risking the detachment of the spider arms from the drum.
In the state of the art European Patent No. EP1520067, a washing machine drum is explained which comprises a cylindrical body shell and circular front and rear lids, the peripheries of which are connected to the cylindrical shell by means of a seam, and wherein the strength of the said seam is increased against centrifugal forces by being circumferentially stamped.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a drum, the mechanical strength of which is improved, and the production method thereof.
The drum realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof comprises a cylindrical body produced from a sheet metal, a circular cover mounted to the rear side of the body, a circular fold enabling the rear edge of the body to be joined with the cover, a drum spider having more than one spider arm providing the rotation of the drum, and a circular flange that surrounds the rear side of the body and enables the spider arms extending from the body towards the fold to be connected to the body. The drum of the present invention comprises a strengthening strip that is formed by bending the edge of the sheet metal forming the flange towards the front or rear surface of the sheet metal as much as the width of the flange before the seaming process wherein the fold is formed, that is an extension of the sheet metal, that extends backwards from the fold and at least partially covers the flange. Thus, the mechanical strength of the drum is improved around the flange where the thickness of the sheet metal is increased by means of the strengthening strip.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing machines.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum is used in laundry washing-drying machines.
The drum realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:

The drum (1) comprises a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular sheet metal (A), a circular cover (3) mounted to the rear side of the body (2), a circular fold (4) enabling the rear edge of the body (2) to be joined with the cover (3), a drum spider (6) having more than one spider arm (5) that enables the movement of the electric motor and the transmission elements to be transferred to the body (2), and a circular flange (7) that surrounds the rear side of the body (2) and enables the spider arms (5) extending from the body (2) towards the fold (4) to be connected to the body (2).
The drum (1) of the present invention comprises a strengthening strip (8) that is formed by bending the edge (K) of the sheet metal (A) forming the flange (7) towards the front or rear surface of the sheet metal (A) almost as much as the width of the flange (7) before the seaming process wherein the fold (4) is formed, that extends from the fold (4) towards the body (2) and that overlaps with the flange (7). Thus, the flange (7) is prevented from being deformed by the spider arms (5) that are fixed onto the flange (7) and enable the movement received from the motor to the body (2).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the strengthening strip (8) is circular and surrounds the flange (7). Accordingly, the thickness of the body (2) is increased at each point along the flange (7).
In an embodiment of the present invention, more than one strengthening strip (8) extends over the flange (7) at the regions where the spider arms (5) are connected to the flange (7).
The production method of the drum (1) consists of the following steps:
- bending a long edge of a rectangular sheet metal (A) with which the body (2) is produced, as much as the width of the flange (7),
- rendering the body (2) cylindrical,
- joining the body (2) with the cover (3),
- forming the fold (4) so that the strengthening strip (8) extends over the flange (7).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing machines.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the drum (1) is used in laundry washing-drying machines.
By means of the present invention, the strengthening strip (8) and the cover (3), that are disposed in an overlapped manner while forming the flange (7), strengthen the drum (1) along the flange (7) whereto they are connected. By means of the strengthening strip (8) that is positioned almost parallel to the sheet metal (A) with one or more than one layer, the thickness of the flange (7) is increased. Thus, the flange (7) is prevented from being deformed by the spider arms (5) that are fixed onto the flange (7) and enable the movement received from the motor to the body (2).

Claims (6)

  1. A drum (1) comprising a cylindrical body (2) produced from a rectangular sheet metal (A), a circular cover (3) mounted to the rear side of the body (2), a circular fold (4) enabling the rear edge of the body (2) to be joined with the cover (3), a drum spider (6) having more than one spider arm (5) that enables the movement of the electric motor and the transmission elements to be transferred to the body (2), and a circular flange (7) that surrounds the rear side of the body (2) and enables the spider arms (5) extending from the body (2) towards the fold (4) to be connected to the body (2), characterized by a strengthening strip (8) that is formed by bending the edge (K) of the sheet metal (A) forming the flange (7) towards the front or rear surface of the sheet metal (A) almost as much as the width of the flange (7), that extends from the fold (4) towards the body (2) and that overlaps with the flange (7).
  2. A drum (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by the circular strengthening strip (8) that surrounds the flange (7).
  3. A drum (1) as in Claim 1, characterized by more than one strengthening strip (8) that extends over the flange (7) at the regions where the spider arms (5) are connected to the flange (7).
  4. A production method for a drum (1) as in Claim 1, comprising the steps of:
    - bending a long edge of a rectangular sheet metal (A) with which the body (2) is produced, as much as the width of the flange (7),
    - rendering the body (2) cylindrical,
    - joining the body (2) with the cover (3),
    - forming the fold (4) so that the strengthening strip (8) extends over the flange (7).
  5. A laundry washing machine characterized by a drum (1) as in any one of the above claims.
  6. A laundry washing-drying machine characterized by a drum (1) as in any one of Claims 1 to 4.
