Description
The present invention relates to a laundry dryer with improved ventilating and odor removal effectiveness.
In laundry dryers wherein the drying air is circulated within a closed cycle, the drying air activated by a fan dehumidifies the laundry by being passed over the laundry. The water vapor in the humid air is moved away from the air by means of the heat exchanger. The dehumidified drying air is then heated by being passed over the heater, thus hot and dry air is delivered onto the laundry again. Besides the drying function, ventilating and/or odor removal function of laundry dryers are also widely used. The microbiological load of the processing air should be decreased and the processing air the microbiological load of which is decreased should be changed with clean air in order that the ventilating and odor removal processes are effectively performed.
In the state of the art United States Patent No. US5664340, a laundry dryer is explained wherein the laundry is cleansed from the microorganisms forming thereon by means of the ultraviolet lamp provided on the lid of the dryer.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a laundry dryer with improved ventilating and odor removal effectiveness.
The laundry dryer realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof comprises a drum wherein the laundry is dried, a circulation channel carrying the air that leaves the drum and enters the drum, a heat exchanger provided on the circulation channel, a heater and a fan. The air dehumidified in the heat exchanger and heated by means of the heater is delivered onto the laundry in the drum through the circulation channel by means of the fan. Thus, the laundry in the drum is enabled to be dried. The laundry dryer furthermore comprises a valve that closes an opening provided on the circulation channel. The valve opens/closes on the opening by being actuated by a driving mechanism with a thermo-actuator, solenoid valve, electric motor, etc. and thus air transfer is realized between the circulation channel and the outer environment.
The laundry dryer of the present invention comprises a control unit that keeps the valve in the closed position during the drying process and opens the valve, activates the ultraviolet lamp and thus increases the ventilation effectiveness when the user selects the ventilation or odor removal function. Thus, while the odor particles on the laundry are removed from the laundry by being carried by air, the air passed over the laundry is discharged to the outer environment after being sterilized.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the valve is provided before the fan on the circulation channel and the suction effect of the drying fan is utilized for sucking air into the circulation channel from the outer environment. In this embodiment, the ultraviolet lamp disposed before the valve eliminates the microorganisms in the dirty air.
In an embodiment of the present invention, one of the two valves is located at the inlet of the heat exchanger and the other is located at the outlet of the heat exchanger. In this embodiment, the ultraviolet lamp is positioned between the drum and the valve disposed close to the heat exchanger inlet. Thus, when the laundry dryer is desired to be ventilated after long time usage, the ventilation and odor removal processes are realized without using the heat exchanger.
By means of the present invention, the processing air inside the circulation channel is enabled to be changed without increasing energy consumption. Furthermore, by means of the ultraviolet lamp disposed on the circulation channel, the microorganisms carried by air and that release bad odor are prevented from growing.
A laundry drying machine realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
Figure 1 – is the schematic view of a laundry dryer in an embodiment of the present invention.
Figure 2 – is the schematic view of a laundry dryer in another embodiment of the present invention.
The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
- Laundry dryer
- Drum
- Circulation channel
- Heat exchanger
- Heater
- Fan
- Valve
- Ultraviolet lamp
- Control unit
The laundry dryer (1) comprises a drum (2) wherein the laundry desired to be dried is placed, a circulation channel (3) that enables the processing air to be delivered onto the laundry in the drum (2), a heat exchanger (4), for example a condenser, provided on the circulation channel (3) and that enables the processing air exiting the drum (2) to be dehumidified, a heater (5) that enables to heat the dehumidified processing air exiting the heat exchanger (4), a fan (6) that enables the processing air to be circulated inside the circulation channel (3) and at least one valve (7) that realizes the air transfer between the outer environment and the circulation channel (3).
The laundry dryer (1) of the present invention comprises an ultraviolet lamp (8) provided on the circulation channel (3) and that decreases the microbiological load of the processing air and a control unit (9) that activates the ultraviolet lamp (8) by opening the valve (7) when the user selects the ventilation program. When the valve (7) is closed, the laundry dryer (1) operates with a closed air cycle. In situations wherein the laundry is desired only to be ventilated and drying is not required, the control unit (9) enables the valve (7) to be opened and thus enables the processing air cleansed from the microorganisms it carries to be discharged to the outer environment by means of the ultraviolet lamp (8). Thus, the processing air delivered to the outer environment with a decreased microbiological load is prevented from releasing bad odor and the laundry is ventilated with the clean air received into the circulation channel (3).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the ultraviolet lamp (8) is disposed at the heat exchanger (4) outlet so as to remain between the heat exchanger (4) and the fan (6) and the valve (7) is disposed between the ultraviolet lamp (8) and the fan (6). By means of the valve (7) disposed closed to the fan (6), the air received from the outer environment is directed to the drum (2) by being sucked into the circulation channel (3). The fresh air that fills into the drum (2) is sterilized by being passed over the ultraviolet lamp (8) after it sweeps the volatile odor molecules on the laundry and is cleansed from microorganisms that release bad odor. The cleaned air is again directed to the outer environment by means of the valve (7) disposed at the outlet of the ultraviolet lamp (8).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the ultraviolet lamp (8) is located at the heat exchanger (4) inlet so as to remain between the drum (2) and the heat exchanger (4) and one of the two valves (7) is located at the inlet of the heat exchanger (4) so as to remain between the ultraviolet lamp (8) and the heat exchanger (4) and the other is located at the outlet of the heat exchanger (4) so as to remain between the fan (6) and the heat exchanger (4). The valve (7) at the outlet of the heat exchanger (4) enables the air in the outer environment to be sucked directly into the circulation channel (3) by the fan (6) and the valve (7) at the inlet of the heat exchanger (4) enables the air inside the circulation channel (3) to be discharged to the outer environment. In this embodiment, the heat exchanger (4) is by-passed by the valves (7) being opened in the ventilation program, in other words air is not passed through the heat exchanger (4) and pressure losses are reduced. Thus, the flow rate of the air carried in the circulation channel (3) is increased and thus the odor removal step is enabled to be completed more quickly.
By means of the present invention, a ventilation program is realized wherein the unpleasant odors on the laundry are removed in a quick and efficient manner. Thus, textile products without heavy stains are enabled to be cleaned without being exposed to water, detergent and mechanical movement and the laundry is prevented from wearing out in the course of time. Since ultraviolet light is applied to the air inside the circulation channel (3), laundry is not directly exposed to ultraviolet ray and the lints, dye and prints on the laundry are prevented from being damaged due to ultraviolet ray.
