Description

ELECTRIC RESISTANCE WELDING MACHINE
DESCRIPTION
The present patent concerns electric resistance welding machines, and in particular it concerns a new electric resistance welding machine particularly suited to carry out repair works on metal body parts.
The high intensity of the current that passes through the two metal elements to be joined finds considerable resistance in the contact surfaces between the two metal elements, to the point that it overheats and melts the metal of the contact surfaces of said two elements.
Generally, the earth (negative electric pole) is constantly connected, through an apposite copper clamp, to one of the two elements to be welded, while the positive electric pole is applied with a gun or lance to the second element already resting on the element connected to earth.
Said type of welding is adopted also by sheet metal workers when they have to carry out repair works on metal body parts. The electric resistance welding machine in this case is used to apply a holding element to a box- shaped metal sheet of a car, in such a way as to exert the necessary traction force on the metal sheet itself in order to remodel the deformed part.
In particular conditions it is difficult to apply the earth clamp.
For example, when said electric resistance welding machines are used to repair metal body parts, it is often difficult to apply the earth clamp because the entire vehicle is painted and paint does not allow or reduces the passage of current.
In fact, the edges of the metal sheets of the vehicle are usually joined to other metal parts in a continuous manner and without free unpainted edges and, furthermore, the few points of the vehicle that are not painted do not allow a suitable electric connection with the point to be welded, due to the presence of gaskets, joints with anti-vibration paste, lubricants for hinges, anti-vibration or anti-friction supports.
Said elements, in fact, do not allow an adequate passage of current between the clamp and the welding point.
In this case, it is therefore necessary to remove the paint not only from the deformed area to be remodelled but also from at least another area where the earth clamp should be applied.
A further drawback lies in that the connection cable between the earth clamp and the welding machine often hinders the operations to be carried out and limits the operator's mobility.
Another drawback is represented by the risk of the operator inadvertently detaching the earth clamp while moving, which would force him/her to waste time to reconnect it.
In order to overcome the drawbacks mentioned above, a new type of electric resistance welding machine has been designed and constructed, which is particularly suited to carry out repair works on metal body parts when it is necessary to raise and flatten the dents present on the metal sheets.
It is the main object of the present invention to provide an electric resistance welding machine that is easy to handle, being without earth clamp and thus avoiding any hindrance due to the presence of the earth clamp's connection cable.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an electric resistance welding machine that is even easier to handle, since its weight and size are reduced compared to the known resistance welding machines.
These and other direct and complementary objects are achieved by the new type of electric resistance welding machine, which is particularly suited to carry out repair works on metal body parts when it is necessary to raise and flatten the dents present on the metal sheets.
The new electric resistance welding machine comprises a machine body inside which there are all the components necessary for the operation of the welding machine.
The new electric resistance welding machine comprises at least one rod holding the welding electrode and at least one rod holding the earth electrode, said electrode holding rods being fitted in corresponding seats or guides obtained in said machine body and arranged parallel to each other and side by side at a given distance from each other.
Said earth electrode is preferably made of copper, while said welding electrode comprises a steel tip.
Said rods are both connected to the welding machine's transformer contained in said machine body, for example by means of a corresponding copper lead. Said rods are telescopic and/or axially sliding in said seats with respect to said machine body. Said rods, for example, can slide for a total stroke of 20-50 mm.
In particular, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, the earth rod slides in an insulating tube inserted in the seat or guide, thus insulating the rod from the machine body.
The welding rod has a non circular cross section, for example hexagonal, and is inserted in a guide bushing provided with a seat whose shape corresponds to the cross section of said welding rod, with an anti-rotation function so that at the end if the cycle it is possible to detach the tip from the metal sheet on which the operation has been carried out.
Furthermore, a stop element is fixed to said welding rod, wherein said stop element bears all the outward-directed strokes given by the operator to remodel the deformed part of the vehicle's body. Inside each one of said seats of the rods there is at least one compression loaded elastic means or spring, suited to counteract the sliding movement of said rods towards the inside of the machine body. Therefore, said two rods are pushed towards the outside by said springs that guarantee also the correct loading force for the electrical contact during the welding operation. The close position of said two electrode holding rods allows the operator to obtain the double contact with the sheet to be worked without using connection clamps.
The contact takes place in positions that are close to each other and therefore it is sufficient to remove the paint only at the level of the area to be remodelled and only on a surface with limited dimensions.
Furthermore, the arrangement and the sliding stroke of said electrode holding rods allows the operator to move the new welding machine near the metal sheets that make up the vehicle, with an inclination even up to 50 degrees with respect to the perpendicular direction and with any angle of rotation with respect to the longitudinal axis of the welding machine.
The new electric resistance welding machine, which includes also the transformer in the portable machine body, operates with inverter technology, which makes it possible to obtain a device whose weight and size are reduced compared to the electric resistance welding machines of the known type.
The characteristics of the new welding machine are highlighted in greater detail in the following description, with reference to the enclosed drawing that has been attached by way of non-limiting example.
Figure 1 shows a cross section of the new electric resistance welding machine (1).
It is a new electric resistance welding machine (1), particularly suited to carry out repair works on metal body parts in order to raise and flatten any dents present on the metal sheets.

The new electric resistance welding machine comprises at least one rod (3) holding the earth electrode, slidingly constrained to the machine body (11) at one end (35) and comprising, at the opposite free end (36), an earth electrode or tip (31).
The new electric resistance welding machine comprises also at least one rod
(4) holding the welding electrode, slidingly constrained to the machine body (11) at one end (46) and comprising, at the opposite free end (47), a welding electrode or tip (41).
Said earth electrode (31) is preferably made of copper, while said welding electrode (41) comprises a steel tip.
Said earth electrode or tip (31) and said welding electrode or tip (41) are constrained to the corresponding rods (3, 4) in a removable or nonremovable manner.
Said earth rod (3) and said welding rod (4) are both connected to the transformer (2) of the welding machine contained in said machine body (11), for example by means of a corresponding copper lead, said transformer (2) being in turn suited to be connected to a power source through a cable
(5) .
Said earth rod (3) and said welding rod (4) are partially housed in corresponding seats or guides (141, 142) obtained on said machine body (11) and arranged parallel to each other and side by side at a given distance from each other. Said earth rod (3) and said welding rod (4) are telescopic and/or axially sliding, independently of each other, in said seats (141, 142) with respect to said machine body (11). Said rods (3, 4), for example, can slide for a total stroke of 20-50 mm.
In order to insulate said earth rod (3) from the machine body (11), said earth rod (3) is made slide in an insulating tube (32), for example a high heat- resistance tube in plastic reinforced with fiber glass, even up to 200 °C, inserted in the corresponding seat or guide (142), and furthermore said end (35) of the earth rod (3) constrained to the machine body (121) is housed in an insulating flange (34).
The welding rod (4) has a non-circular cross section, for example hexagonal, and is inserted in a guide bushing (43), preferably made of brass, provided with a seat whose shape corresponds to the cross section of said welding rod (4), with an anti-rotation function, in such a way that at the end of the cycle it is possible to detach said tip (41) from the metal sheet on which the operation has been carried out.
Furthermore, a stop element (44) is fixed to said welding rod (4), wherein said stop element bears all the strokes given by the operator to remodel the deformed part of the vehicle's body.
Inside each one of said seats (141, 142) of the rods (3, 4) there is a compression loaded spring (33, 42) suited to counteract the sliding movement of said rods (3, 4) towards the inside of the machine body (11).
