Definitions

  • This invention relates generally to teeth-whitening appliances using an air- dried varnish or gel, and more specifically concerns a varnish/gel cartridge in combination with a brush or a reusable applicator or brush.
  • Teeth whitening has become an increasingly popular dental treatment and various specific treatment appliances and/or methods are known. Many of these treatments, which use peroxide for teeth whitening, are used only by a dental professional. Appliances which use a peroxide formulation and are designed for safe home use typically are not as effective for teeth whitening, due to a decreased level of peroxide in the formulation.
  • Teeth-whitening gels and varnishes which are air-dryable, are currently typically applied by syringes or pen-like devices.
  • the applicator tip becomes hard after a single use and is hence inefficient and usually too expensive for successive treatments.
  • the varnish container is also often too large for convenient hand use.
  • a tooth-whitening varnish or gel cartridge and an applicator brush comprising: a single-use cartridge reservoir containing a tooth-whitening formulation which dries in exposed air; and a brush adapted for fluid contact with the reservoir in the cartridge to receive the formulation from the reservoir and to apply the formulation to the teeth of a user.
  • a teeth-whitening appliance comprising: a reservoir adapted to contain multiple uses of an air-dryable teeth-whitening formulation; and a brush applicator removable from the reservoir, wherein the reservoir includes an end which is adapted to receive replacement brush applicators.

  • the seal can be peeled off, as shown in Figures 4 A and 4B. Additional ways of breaking the seal include the application of force when the reservoir is pressurized. By using pressure against the reservoir, a peak force will be presented and the seal will open at that position.
  • Another example uses a "kiss" cutting technology involving a multi-layered seal which is cut partly through. With the application of pressure inside the reservoir, the seal will burst along the partially cut (weak) lines.
  • the reservoir is broken by a needle on the brush which pierces the seal when the brush/cartridge combination is positioned in an applicator device.

  • the applicator includes the capability of applying pressure to move the varnish out the end of the reservoir into the brush.
  • the assembly of Figure 5 also includes a cap 40 which maintains the shelf life of the assembly. In use of the applicator, cap 40 is removed and a new brush positioned on the reservoir. After use, the brush becomes hard due to air-drying of the varnish, but acts as an airtight seal for the varnish in the main reservoir. At the next use, the old dried brush is removed and a new one inserted.
  • Figure 6 shows a variation of a portion of the arrangement of Figure 5, which includes a Luer lock-type interface 46 which provides a fluid-tight connection between the reservoir and the brush 48.
  • the brush 48 includes a small tube element 48 which acts as a flow restrictor for accurate dosing. Tube 48 also prevents the reservoir varnish from becoming hardened within the reservoir. The brush itself will become hard due to the drying varnish, but as indicated above is replaceable upon each new use. The reservoir is available for subsequent uses.
  • Figure 7 shows a closing system which includes a brush holder 60, a brush 62, a brush cap 64 and a female Luer lock with flow restrictor 66.
  • a reservoir 68 is included, with a dosing pen assembly 70.
  • a male Luer lock 72 is provided at the forward end of the reservoir, and a cap 74 for covering the forward end of the male Luer lock.
