Abstract
A lighting control module (1) comprises a housing (5), input ports for electrical connection to an electrical supply and output ports (2) for connection to a luminaire or other controlled device. The lighting control module (1) comprises control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the input ports and the output ports (2). The lighting control module (1) further comprises an expansion port (8) for an expansion module (10) comprising at least one further output port (9). The expansion port (8) comprises at least one electrical connector (13) for connection to the expansion module (10). The housing (5) comprises a removable cover (11) for the expansion port (8). In the absence of an expansion module (10), the housing (5) and the removable cover (11) completely enclose the electrical connectors (13) and the removable cover (11) is mounted to the housing (5) by fixings (12) which can only be released with a tool. The lighting control module has (1) the advantage that the expansion module (10) can be connected by simple electrical connections which saves both space and cost.
Description
LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE
[0001] This invention relates to a lighting control module and, in particular, a lighting control module for use with an expansion module.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Lighting control modules are used to control the operation of luminaires.
Typically, the luminaires are connected electrically to respective output ports of the lighting control module. A typical lighting control module will have ten output ports.
[0003] It is known to provide an expansion module which can be connected to the lighting control module to increase the number of available output ports. However, providing the necessary connector for an expansion module increases the cost and complexity of the lighting control module, which may never be used with an expansion module.
[0004] The present invention seeks to address this situation.
BRIEF SUM MARY OF THE DISCLOSURE
[0005] In accordance with the present invention there is provided a lighting control module comprising a housing, at least one input port for electrical connection to an electrical supply, at least one output port for connection to a luminaire or other controlled device and control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the input port(s) and the output port(s). The lighting control module comprises an expansion port for an expansion module comprising at least one further output port, the expansion port comprising at least one electrical connector for connection to the expansion module. The housing comprises a removable cover for the expansion port, whereby, in the absence of an expansion module, the housing and the removable cover completely enclose the electrical connectors. The removable cover is mounted to the housing by fixings which can only be released with a tool.
[0006] Thus, in accordance with the invention the lighting control module can be provided with an expansion module to increase the number (or configuration) of the available output ports. However, the provision of a removable cover which can only be released with a tool means that the electrical connector(s) to the expansion module can be very simple and low cost, because they are not accessible by the user in normal use of the lighting controller. This has the advantage of saving both space and cost in the design of the lighting control module.
[0007] In the presently preferred embodiment the electrical connectors are exposed male connectors, for example simple metal pins. Such connectors provide the simplest and
smallest possible connection between the lighting control module and the expansion module. However, other connectors could be used, such as simple sockets.
[0008] The lighting control module may comprise a wiring compartment enclosing the input port(s). The wiring compartment may have a further removable cover which is mounted by fixings which can only be released with a tool. Thus, the lighting control module may comprise a removable cover for the wiring compartment in addition to a removable cover for the expansion port.
[0009] Typically, the fixings are screws. The tool is therefore typically a screwdriver. Other fixings, such as specialist clips may be used.
[0010] In a presently preferred embodiment, the expansion module comprises control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the electrical connectors and the further output ports. In this way, the functionality of the expansion module can be independently selected relative to the functionality of the lighting control module. Thus, the expansion module may provide additional functionality not provided by the unexpanded lighting control module. For example, the expansion module may provide digital dimming outputs, analogue dimming outputs or control for window blinds or other peripheral devices.
[0011] Typically the lighting control module provides fewer than ten output ports, for example eight output ports. This has been found to be a convenient number for most applications. The expansion module may comprises more than two further output ports, for example four further output ports.
[0012] The invention extends to a lighting control module in combination with an expansion module. The invention further extends to a lighting control system comprising the lighting control module and a plurality of expansion modules, each expansion module having different control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the electrical connectors and the further output ports. Thus, in accordance with this aspect of the invention, the same basic lighting control module may be used with an expansion module selected from a range of available expansion modules to meet the requirements of a particular user or application. This simplifies both manufacturing and inventory control.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0014] Figures 1 to 5 show a lighting control module 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment, the lighting control module 1 is provided with eight output ports 2, each of which can be connected to a luminaire or other device using a standard GST 18/6 luminaire connector (not shown). Each output port 2 has six terminals providing, respectively, switched live, earth, neutral, permanent live and two dimming outputs. The lighting control module 1 is connected to the live, earth, neutral and permanent live connections of a power supply (not shown) via a plurality of input ports in a wiring compartment 3. The wiring compartment 3 also has four extra-low voltage (ELV) inputs and two controller area network (CAN) bus ports so that multiple lighting control modules 1 can be connected together in a network. The output to the terminals of each output port 2 of the lighting control module 1 is controlled by control circuitry of the lighting control module 1. The dimming outputs may operate according to Digital Serial Interface (DSI), Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) or 1-10V analogue protocols, as required. The lighting control module 1 is also provided at one end with six RJ45 ports 4. The RJ45 ports provide controller area network (CAN) bus connections so that multiple lighting control modules 1 can be connected together in a network. There are two powered CAN ports and two unpowered CAN ports, plus an extra-low voltage (ELV) switch input port, each of which is connected to the control circuitry of the lighting control module 1.
[0015] The control circuitry of the lighting control module is provided within a housing 5, which protects the circuitry from the environment and also prevents access by the user to the circuitry during use. The wiring compartment 3 is provided with a cover 6 which is mounted to the housing 5 by screws 7. The wiring compartment cover 6 can be removed from the housing 5 by unscrewing the screws 7 when the power supply (and other) connections are to be connected within the wiring compartment. The wiring compartment
cover 6 and the screws 7 are then replaced to prevent access to the wiring compartment during normal use.
[0016] In accordance with the invention, the lighting control module 1 is provided with an expansion port 8 which allows the addition of up to four further output ports 9 on an expansion module 10, as shown in Figures 4 and 5. The expansion port 8 is provided as an opening in the housing 5 into which the expansion module 10 is received. The expansion module 10 is an optional addition to the lighting control module 1. When the expansion module 10 is not used, the expansion port 8 is covered by an expansion port cover 1 1. Importantly, the expansion port cover 1 1 is mounted to the housing 5 by screws 12. This means that the expansion port cover 11 can only be removed with the use of an additional tool, i.e. a screwdriver. Because the expansion port cover 11 can only be removed with a tool, there is no access by the user to the expansion port 8 during normal use of the lighting control module 1.
[0017] Within the expansion port 8, electrical connectors 13 are provided for connection to the expansion module 10. As shown in Figures 2 to 4, the electrical connectors are in the form of two rows of six projecting metal pins. Were the expansion port 8 to be accessible in normal use of the lighting control module 1 , such connectors 13 would not meet the required electrical safety standard as they would potentially expose the user to line voltage. However, the provision of the expansion port cover 11 that can only be removed using a tool means that there is no user access to the expansion port connectors 13 in normal use of the lighting control module 1 and the required electrical safety standard is met. The provision of the expansion port connectors 13 in the form of projecting metal pins, i.e. "male" connectors, also means that the expansion port 8 is not required to accommodate the insulation that would surround an insulated socket, i.e. "female" connection.
[0018] The electrical connectors 13 provide connections to the expansion module 10 for the live, earth, neutral and permanent live connections from the lighting control module 1 , as well as extra-low voltage (ELV) connections and controller area network (CAN) bus connections.
[0019] As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the expansion module 10 is received within the expansion port 8 and fixed in position by the screws 12. The male expansion port connectors 13 mate with corresponding female connectors in the expansion module 10 to make the necessary electrical connections to the expansion module 10. The expansion module 10 is provided with its own control circuitry 14, which cooperates with the control circuitry of the lighting control module 1 to provide the required functionality of the further output ports 9. When fitted to the lighting control module 1 , the expansion module 10
projects above the upper surface of the housing 5, which allows space below the expansion module 10 for the control circuitry of the lighting control module 1.
[0020] A variety of available expansion modules 10 may be provided that can be selected by the user to meet the requirements of a particular application. For example, the further output ports 9 may provide any combination of digital dimming, analogue dimming, switching only or control for window blinds. One or more of the further output ports 9 may provide a volt free output port for the switching of a peripheral device. Consequently, the same basic lighting control module 1 may be sold with different expansion modules 10 to meet the requirements of a range of users, in a "mix and match" configuration.
[0021] In summary, a lighting control module 1 comprises a housing 5, input ports for electrical connection to an electrical supply and output ports 2 for connection to a luminaire or other controlled device. The lighting control module 1 comprises control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the input ports and the output ports 2. The lighting control module 1 further comprises an expansion port 8 for an expansion module 10 comprising at least one further output port 9. The expansion port 8 comprises at least one electrical connector 13 for connection to the expansion module 10. The housing 5 comprises a removable cover 11 for the expansion port 8. In the absence of an expansion module 10, the housing 5 and the removable cover 1 1 completely enclose the electrical connectors 13 and the removable cover 11 is mounted to the housing 5 by fixings 12 which can only be released with a tool. The lighting control module has 1 the advantage that the expansion module 10 can be connected by simple electrical connections which saves both space and cost.

Claims
1. A lighting control module comprising:
a housing;
at least one input port for electrical connection to an electrical supply;
at least one output port for connection to a luminaire or other controlled device; control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the input port(s) and the output port(s);
an expansion port for an expansion module comprising at least one further output port, the expansion port comprising at least one electrical connector for connection to the expansion module,
wherein the housing comprises a removable cover for the expansion port, whereby, in the absence of an expansion module, the housing and the removable cover completely enclose the electrical connectors and wherein the removable cover is mounted to the housing by fixings which can only be released with a tool.
2. A lighting control module as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the electrical connectors are exposed male connectors.
3. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim further comprising a wiring compartment enclosing the input port(s), wherein the wiring compartment has a further removable cover which is mounted by fixings which can only be released with a tool.
4. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the fixings are screws.
5. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the expansion module comprises control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the electrical connectors and the further output ports.
6. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim comprising fewer than ten output ports.
7. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the expansion module comprises more than two further output ports.
8. A lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim in combination with an expansion module.
9. A lighting control system comprising a lighting control module as claimed in any preceding claim and a plurality of expansion modules, each expansion module having different control circuitry for controlling the electrical supply between the electrical connectors and the further output ports.
