Description
ELONGATED CONSTRUCTION ELEMENT
The present invention relates to an elongate construction element. In practice, known construction elements are usually either too light in weight to provide sufficient structural strength or too heavy for easy transport and use.
The object of the invention is to obviate the drawbacks of the prior art, that is, to provide a strong but lightweight construction element which is easy to produce, transport and use, whilst the construction element is capable of resisting high forces exerted thereon .
In order to achieve that object, a construction element of the kind described in the introduction is according to the invention characterised in that the construction element is made of a panel, wherein the element can be transformed from a flat position to an erected position, wherein the element is at least substantially made of paper/cardboard, wherein the panel has an at least substantially U-shaped cross- section, wherein the panel comprises an elongate base panel and at least two elongate side panels which are each hinged to the base panel along a longitudinal edge thereof, wherein the side panels can hinge from a flat position to an upright position on the base panel, wherein the panel is clad with a water-repellent cladding. The water-repellent cladding in particular comprises a polyethylene layer . Preferably, the water-repellent cladding has a sandwich structure comprising a polyethylene core layer with paper layers provided on either side thereof . In this way, a moisture-protecting construction element having a high flexural and tensile strength is obtained. The internal distance between legs of the U-shaped cross-section is preferably at least
substantially the same as the height of the legs of the U- shaped cross-section. Thus , a 1 ightweight construction element having an optimum structural strength is realised. Important is that the internal distance between legs of the U-shaped cross-section is substantially the same as the height of the legs of the U-shaped cross-section, so that identical construction elements according to the invention can be readily coupled. Thus, a modular system of
construction elements is created.
In a preferred embodiment of a construction element
according to the invention, the side panels form first side panels, wherein the first side panels are each provided along their longitudinal edge with an elongate second side panel hinged thereto, and wherein the second side panels can hinge from a flat position to an upright position on the first side panels. Preferably, the second side panels are each provided along their longitudinal edge with an elongate third side panel hinged thereto, and wherein the third side panels can hinge from a flat posit ion to an upright position on the second side panels .
In another preferred embodiment of a construction element according to the invention, the panel comprises a core of paper/cardboard layers, as well as a paper/cardboard inner layer and a paper/cardboard outer layer, which inner and outer layer are connected to the core on either side thereof by means of an adhesive.
In another preferred embodiment of a construction element according to the invention, at least one groove having an at least substantially V shaped cross-section is provided at
the location of a predetermined bending line , which groove extends through the inner layer and into the core up to the outer layer to form a hinge in the outer layer so as to enable the side panel to hinge relative to the base panel . This achieves that only the outer layer forms a hinge, whilst no core material is locally present . The panel can thus easily bend locally . The outer layer may be weakened at the location of the predetermined bending line. Preferably, at least two grooves are provided for forming a hinge in the outer layer so as to enable at least two side panels to hinge relative to the base panel.
In another preferred embodiment of a construction element according to the invention, the core comprises an even number of paper/cardboard layers. Preferably,, the core comprises a corrugated sublayer and a flat sublayer provided on one side thereof. Use is made in particular of an adhesive, such as glue, that is applied to the crests of the corrugations of the corrugated sublayer so as to bond the flat sublayer thereto . Preferably, the panel , in the flat position thereof, is mirror-symmetrical relative to a central longitudinal plane of the panel. This adds to the shape stability of the panel, so that "warping" of the panel is prevented at all times.
The invention also relates to a system, in particular a construction system for manufacturing walls, comprising at least two construction elements according to the invention, wherein one construction element is clampingly accommodated near its end between legs of the U-shaped cross-section of the other construction element. The base panel of one construction element preferably abuts against one of the
legs of the U-shaped cross-section of the other construction element in that case .
In a preferred embodiment of a system according to the invention, a leg of the U-shaped cross-section of one construction element is clampingly accommodated between legs of the U-shaped cross-section of a third construction element according to the invention. It is noted that in the system according to the invention one construction element is positioned upright on the other construction element and is designed for being provided with a plate-shaped material , whilst the other construction element is designed to be fixed to a floor. The base panel of said one construction element is preferably provided with through holes for passing pipes, cables and the like
therethrough .
The invention will now be explained in more detail with reference to figures illustrated in a drawing, in which
- Figure 1 shows a panel in a flat position for forming a construction element in a preferred variant according to the invention;
- Figures 2 and 3 schematically show the steps of
transforming the construction element from the flat position to an erected position;
- Figure 4 shows three construction elements of the type shown in figures 1, 2 and 3 in assembled condition;
- Figure 5 shows the construction elements of figure 4 in disassembled condition; and
- Figure 6 shows a wail system according to the
invention .
In figures 1, 2 and 3 there is shown a construction element 1 in a fiat position (figure 1 ) and in an erected position
(figure 3) , which construction element consists of one elongated ace panel 2 and six elongate side panels 3, 4, 5. The side panels 3 form first side panels , as it were, which are each hinged to the base panel 2 along longitudinal edges 6 thereof . The side panels 4 form second side panels and are hinged to the first side panels 3 along longitudinal edges 7 thereof. The side panels 5, to conclude, form third side panels which are hinged to the second side panels 4 along longitudinal edges 8 thereof. The construction element 1 is entirely made of paper/cardboard, as will be explained in more detail yet hereinafter. From the flat position, the first side panels 3 are hinged to a position perpendicular to the base panel 2 , the second side panels 4 are hinged inward to a position perpendicular to the first side panels 3 (parallel to the base panel 2, therefore), and the third side panels 5 are hinged inward to a position perpendicular to the second side panels 4 (parallel to the first side panels 3, therefore) . Following that, adjacent side panels 3 , 4, 5 are joined, in particular glued, together. In this way a construction element 1 having a U-shaped cross-section (figure 3) is obtained. In figure 2 there is shown an intermediate position of the construction element 1, i.e. between the flat position of figure 1 and the erected position of figure 3, with like parts being indicated by the same numerals .
The construction element 1 of figure 3 , i.e. all the panels
2, 3, 4, 5, consists of a core of three paper/cardboard
layers , as well as a paper/cardboard inner layer and a paper/cardboard outer layer, which inner and outer layer are glued to the core on either side thereof. The core comprises a flat sublayer with a corrugated sublayer on either side thereof. The sublayers are glued together, with the glue being applied to crests of the corrugated sublayers .
With reference to figures 1, 2 and 3 it is noted that the outer layer is flexible, with six grooves 9 having an at least substantially V-shaped cross-section being provided at the location of predetermined bending lines . Each groove 9 extends through the inner layer and into the core up to the outer layer to form a hinge in the outer layer so as to enable the side panels 3, 4 , 5 to hinge with respect to the base panel 2.
The construction element 1 shown in figure 3 has a U-shaped cross-section, with the base panel 2 forming the base 10 of said U-shaped cross-section and the folded-together side panels 3, 4 , 5 forming the legs 11 , 12 of said U-shaped cross-section . The internal distance d between the legs 11, 12 equals the height h of the legs 11, 12.
Figures 4 and 5 show a system comprising at least two construction elements 1 , 1' of the type shown in figures 1, 2 and 3. One construction element 1 is clampingly
accommodated near its end between legs 11', 12' of the U- shaped cross-section of the other construction element 1'. As shown, the base panel 2 of said one construction element 1 abuts against a leg 11 of the U-shaped cross-section of said other construction element 1'. One leg 11 of the U- shaped cross-section of one construction element 1 is clampingly accommodated between legs 11'', 121 ' of the U-
shaped cross-section of a third construction element 1 ' ' of the type shown in figures 1, 2 and 3.
Said one construction element 1 is positioned upright on said other construction element 1 ' and is designed for being provided with a plate-shaped material, with the other construction element 1' being designed for being fixed to a floor. It is also possible to fix a plate-shaped material to the third construction element 1''. The third construction element 1 ' ' is provided with through holes 13 for passing pipes, cables 14 and the like therethrough.
Figure 6 shows a wall system built up of the construction elements 1, 1', 1 ' ' , with clamping plates or plasterboards 15, for example, being fixed thereto on either side thereof.
The construction element 1 is clad with a cladding
comprising a sandwich structure consisting of a polyethylene core layer functioning as an adhesive layer with paper layers provided on either side thereof .
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown herein but it also extends to other preferred variants that fall within the scope of the appended claims .
