Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method for producing glycolide efficiently and economically by depolymerization of polyglycolic acid.
- Glycolide obtained by the production method of the present invention is useful as a monomer for ring-opening polymerization. More specifically, the glycolide obtained by the production method of the present invention is subjected to ring-opening polymerization alone or copolymerized with another comonomer to obtain polyglycolide (that is, polyglycolic acid) or various copolymers. be able to. Polyglycolic acid (copolymer) is useful as a biodegradable polymer material or a medical polymer material.
- glycolide production method of the present invention is not limited to glycolide via low-molecular weight polyglycolic acid such as glycolic acid oligomers, but also high molecular weight polyglycolic acid product wastes and molding wastes as monomers. It is also useful as a method of converting to glycolide and recycling.
- Aliphatic polyesters such as polyglycolic acid and polylactic acid are hydrolyzed in vivo, and are metabolized by microorganisms into natural water and carbon dioxide under natural environment. For this reason, aliphatic polyester attracts attention as a biodegradable polymer material that can be substituted for medical materials and general-purpose resins.
- polyglycolic acid has a large biodegradability, and, for example, in addition to a large hydrolyzability using an alkaline solution, mechanical properties such as heat resistance and tensile strength, and In particular, the gas barrier property when the film or sheet is used is also excellent. For this reason, polyglycolic acid is expected to be used as agricultural materials, various packaging (container) materials and medical polymer materials, and is being developed for use alone or in combination with other resin materials.
- Polyglycolic acid can be obtained by polycondensation of glycolic acid, but it is difficult to obtain high molecular weight polyglycolic acid by this method. Therefore, a high molecular weight polyglycolic acid used as a molding material is often synthesized by ring-opening (co) polymerizing glycolide, which is a cyclic ester.
- polyglycolic acid can be synthesized by dehydrating and condensing monomeric glycolic acid.
- glycolide that is, 1,4-dioxane-2,5-dione
- dimeric cyclic ester a bimolecular cyclic ester of glycolic acid
- glycolide In order to mass-produce polyglycolic acid on an industrial scale using glycolide as a raw material, it is essential to efficiently and economically supply high-purity glycolide. However, it has been difficult to efficiently and economically synthesize glycolide.
- Glycolide is a dimeric cyclic ester having a structure in which two molecules of water are eliminated from two molecules of glycolic acid.
- low molecular weight substances such as oligomers are usually used. Once formed, glycolide, a dimeric cyclic ester, cannot be obtained. Therefore, after synthesizing a glycolic acid oligomer, a method of producing a dimer glycolide by depolymerizing the oligomer is employed.
- U.S. Pat. No. 2,668,162 discloses that a glycolic acid oligomer is pulverized into a powder and a pulverized product is supplied to a reactor at a rate of about 20 g / hour in a small amount.
- a method is disclosed in which a vapor containing glycolide is collected in a trap by depolymerization by heating to 270 to 285 ° C. under an ultra-vacuum (1.6 to 2.0 kPa). Although this method can be implemented on a small scale, it is difficult to scale up and is not suitable for mass production.
- the oligomer becomes heavy during heating and remains in the reaction vessel as a large amount of residue, so that the yield is low and the cleaning operation of the residue is complicated. Furthermore, in this method, glycolide having a high melting point is deposited on the inner wall of the recovery line together with by-products, and the line may be blocked, and it is difficult to recover the precipitate in the line.
- an ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acid oligomer is heated to form a melt, and the surface of the melt is formed.
- a method is disclosed in which an inert gas such as nitrogen gas is blown and a cyclic ester generated from the surface and volatilized is entrained in a gas stream and recovered.
- the production rate of the cyclic ester is low, and a large amount of inert gas is blown, so that the production cost is high, for example, preheating of the inert gas is required.
- heavy materialization progresses in the oligomer melt during heating, and a large amount of heavy material remains in the reaction can as a residue, resulting in a low yield and complicated cleaning of the residue.
- Patent Document 4 there is a method in which an oligomer of ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acid, an ester or a salt thereof is added to a solvent to which a catalyst is added, and the mixture is stirred under heating and catalytically decomposed. It is disclosed. In this method, a solvent suitable for entraining the cyclic ester in the gas phase is used at normal pressure or under pressure, and the gas phase is condensed to recover the cyclic ester and the solvent.
- lactic acid oligomer and dodecane (boiling point: about 214 ° C.) as a solvent is shown.
- Patent Document 5 discloses a method using a high-boiling polar organic solvent in a method for producing an ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acid dimer cyclic ester by depolymerizing an ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acid oligomer. Is disclosed. In this method, a mixture containing 30 to 5,000 parts by weight of a high-boiling polar organic solvent with respect to 100 parts by weight of an ⁇ -hydroxycarboxylic acid oligomer is heated to a temperature at which depolymerization occurs to obtain a substantially uniform solution.
- Patent Document 5 exemplifies a large number of polar organic solvents having a boiling point in the range of 230 to 450 ° C. as the high-boiling polar organic solvent.
- aromatic ester compounds di (2-methoxyethyl) phthalate, diethylene glycol dibenzoate or benzyl butyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate.
- the present inventors further examined the depolymerization reaction using these aromatic ester compounds as a high-boiling polar organic solvent. When heated to a temperature at which depolymerization of glycolic acid oligomer occurs for a long time, the aromatic ester compounds Has been found to be prone to thermal degradation.
- Patent Document 6 proposes a process for producing glycolide in which polyglycolic acid is solid-phase depolymerized in a temperature range of 200 ° C. or higher and lower than 245 ° C.
- this method is not necessarily suitable as a method for efficiently mass-producing glycolide on an industrial scale.
- polyglycolic acid tends to become heavy unless the heating temperature is strictly controlled.
- the cyclic ester phase is separated and recovered by separating both of them in a liquid state, while thermal degradation.
- the polyalkylene glycol ether phase which has not been recycled can be recycled to the depolymerization reaction system.
- the polyalkylene glycol ether is usually used in a proportion of 30 to 500 parts by weight, preferably 50 to 200 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the aliphatic polyester.
- Polyglycolic acid is expected to be produced in large quantities and used in large quantities in the future, and recycling of product waste becomes an important issue. Recycling of molding waste produced as a by-product during the molding of polyglycolic acid is also an issue. If glycolide can be produced by depolymerizing polyglycolic acid efficiently and economically, recycling of polyglycolic acid becomes easy.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing glycolide by depolymerizing polyglycolic acid efficiently and economically, allowing the reaction to continue for a long period of time without lowering the production efficiency. is there.
- the present inventors have produced a large amount of diglycolic acid, which is a dimer of glycolic acid, while researching to solve the above object. As a result, it was found that the production efficiency of glycolide decreased early, and the depolymerization reaction of polyglycolic acid stopped in a short period of time.
- the present inventors have further researched and found that the amount of diglycolic acid produced decreases as the reaction temperature of the polyglycolic acid depolymerization reaction is lowered. Decreasing the reaction temperature of the polyglycolic acid depolymerization reaction reduces the degradation loss of polyglycolic acid such as glycolic acid oligomers, which are the raw materials that produce glycolide, and the dissipation loss of the solvent that performs the depolymerization reaction.
- the inventors of the present invention have made extensive studies to solve the above-mentioned object, and select and use a specific polyethylene glycol ether that is not specifically disclosed as a high-boiling polar organic solvent in Patent Document 5 or 7. Found that the reaction temperature of the polyglycolic acid depolymerization reaction can be lowered without lowering the pressure of the polyglycolic acid depolymerization reaction system, and the polyglycolic acid is depolymerized efficiently and economically. Thus, the inventors completed the invention by conceiving that glycolide can be produced.

- the respective substituents may be the same or different.
- the boiling point and polarity of the polyethylene glycol ether (B) can be adjusted by the type and number of substituents.
- the properties of the polyethylene glycol ether (B) also change depending on the number of repetitions p of the ethyleneoxy unit (—CH 2 CH 2 —O—) in the formula (1).
- polyethylene glycol ether (B) having a repeating number p of an integer of 1 to 5, preferably 1 to 3, more preferably 1 or 2, is used.

- the solubility of glycolide at a temperature of 85 ° C. is more preferably 0.3 to 4.5% by mass, and still more preferably 0.6 to 4% by mass.
- glycolide at a temperature of 85 ° C. If the solubility of glycolide at a temperature of 85 ° C. is too low, glycolide distilled together with the polyethylene glycol ether (B) is precipitated, which is liable to cause clogging of the recovery line. - Cooling to a low temperature requires a large amount of energy on an industrial scale, thus impairing efficiency and economy.
- the addition of a non-solvent is disadvantageous for industrial implementation because it requires separation of the non-solvent when the polyethylene glycol ether (B) is recovered and reused, increasing the number of processes and equipment.
- the polyethylene glycol ether (B) used in the present invention preferably has a glycolide solubility of 0.1% by mass or more at a temperature of 25 ° C. (normal temperature).
- polyethylene glycol ether (B) having a glycolide solubility in the range of 0.1 to 1.5% by mass, more preferably 0.15 to 1.3% by mass is more preferable.

- the polyethylene glycol ether (B) is usually 10 to 100 parts by mass, preferably 12 to 85 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the PGA (A). More preferably 13 to 70 parts by mass, still more preferably 14 to 60 parts by mass, and particularly preferably 15 to 50 parts by mass are used. If the proportion of polyethylene glycol ether (B) used is too small, it will be difficult to form a substantially uniform phase between the melt phase of PGA (A) and the liquid phase composed of polyethylene glycol ether (B). Or glycolide produced by the depolymerization reaction of PGA (A) may be difficult to distill together with polyethylene glycol ether (B). If the proportion of the polyethylene glycol ether (B) used is too large, the recovery cost of the polyethylene glycol ether (B) increases, which is not economical.
- polyethylene glycol ether (B) The polyethylene glycol ether (B) can be obtained by applying a method for producing polyethylene glycol ether widely known to those skilled in the art before the present application is filed.

The recovery rate is also high. However, even if the pressure of the depolymerization reaction system is less than 0.3 kPa, the effect of improving the distillation efficiency of glycolide and polyethylene glycol ether (B) does not increase, while the design and maintenance costs of the apparatus tend to increase rapidly. - the polyethylene glycol ether (B) phase can be separated from the distillate obtained by phase separation and returned to the depolymerization reaction system for circulation. According to this method, it is not necessary to recover a large amount of solvent [polyethylene glycol ether (B)], and it is not necessary to prepare a solvent exceeding the amount determined by the volume of the reaction vessel. Therefore, this method can minimize the loss of the solvent.

- the depolymerization reaction of PGA since the depolymerization reaction of PGA can be started at a temperature lower than the temperature condition conventionally employed, the production rate of glycolide in the PGA depolymerization reaction system is rapidly increased. It is possible to suppress the production of diglycolic acid in the reaction solution, which causes a decrease and a short-term termination of the PGA depolymerization reaction and glycolide production reaction. As a result, since the depolymerization reaction of PGA can be continued for a long period of time, glycolide can be produced efficiently and economically.
- the production rate of glycolide in the PGA depolymerization reaction system (hereinafter sometimes referred to as “GL production rate”) is measured by the following method. That is, the distillate (glycolide and solvent) distilled for 1 hour immediately after the start of the depolymerization reaction (initial stage) or for the first hour after the lapse of a predetermined time is cooled with warm water at a temperature of 85 ° C. And are separated. Usually, a glycolide phase is formed in the lower layer, and the upper layer is a solvent phase. - the concentration of diglycolic acid in the depolymerization reaction solution of PGA is measured by the following method. That is, immediately after the start of the depolymerization reaction (initial stage) or when a predetermined time has elapsed, the reaction solution in the reaction vessel is collected, and the diglycolic acid concentration in the reaction solution is measured by liquid chromatography. For example, when a predetermined time elapses from the start of the depolymerization reaction, the diglycolic acid concentration (hereinafter referred to as “DGA concentration”) after 10 days, 20 days, and 30 days from the start of the depolymerization reaction.

- the lower limit of the DGA concentration after 30 days is 0%.
- the PGA (A) heavy product is hardly produced during heating and depolymerization (heating step, glycolide production step and distillation step), the inside of the reaction vessel is cleaned. Can be saved.
- polyethylene glycol ether (B) and solubilizer (C) [preferably solubilizer (C1) or solubilizer (C2)] Can be easily cleaned by placing them in a reaction vessel and heating.
- the mother liquor from which glycolide has been separated contains polyethylene glycol ether (B) or solubilizing agent (C) as a solvent
- the separated mother liquor can be recycled as it is without purification, activated carbon, etc. It is possible to recycle by adsorbing and purifying with a polyethylene glycol ether (B) and / or solubilizer (C) after simple distillation or fractional distillation. Since the solubilizer (C) is effective in dissolving the heavy product, cleaning in the reaction vessel may be omitted or reduced in the case of depolymerization using the solubilizer (C).
- the polyglycolic acid loss rate after 10 days (hereinafter, sometimes referred to as “PGA loss rate after 10 days”) is small.
- the PGA loss rate after the lapse of 10 days is based on the total amount of polyglycolic acid (unit: g, hereinafter the same) supplied during the depolymerization reaction of polyglycolic acid for 10 days.
- PGA loss rate (% by mass) 100-[(total amount of glycolide distilled + amount of polyglycolic acid in the reaction solution) / amount of total polyglycolic acid charged] ⁇ 100

- Glycolide is produced at the distillation temperature of polyethylene glycol ether (B), which is a solvent, and is distilled together with the solvent. Therefore, glycolide hardly accumulates in the distillation line, thus preventing the distillation line from being blocked. In addition, it is possible to save the labor of collecting the accumulation in the distilling line.

- PGA (A) can be depolymerized to PGA (A) with a relatively small amount of solvent used. Therefore, solvent loss can be reduced and it can contribute to resource saving.

ジエチレングリコールブチルフェニルエーテル、ジエチレングリコールヘキシルフェニルエーテル、またはこれらの化合物のフェニル基の少なくとも1つの水素原子がアルキル基、アルコキシ基、ハロゲン原子等で置換されたポリエチレングリコールアルキルアリールエーテル;
ジエチレングリコールジフェニルエーテル、またはこれらの化合物のフェニル基の少なくとも1つの水素原子がアルキル基、アルコキシ基、ハロゲン原子等で置換された化合物等のポリエチレングリコールジアリールエーテル;
Oct:
Dodec:
